…in case you missed it…
According to Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com, the Mets are close to signing free-agent RHP Claudio Vargas.
The New York Post wrote last night that a deal could be done as soon as today, with the two sides on the ‘verge’ of such a deal, according to Newsday.
Last season, Vargas went 11-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 29 games for the Brewers, who released him during spring training.
…now that el duque is in a boot, and sidelined for at least two more weeks, though likely more, and with Pedro Martinez out with a hamstring injury, signing vargas to a minor-league is an absolute no brainer…
Luis Castillo sat out last night’s game with a sore right knee.
He told reporters prior to the game that, although his knee is a bit swollen, he does not think he’ll need to go to the disabled list.
The thing is, as John Delcos writes at his blog for the Journal News, “It seems that every time a Met says he doesn’t worry about the DL, we don’t see him for two weeks.”
…exactly, it’s getting to the point that, until i see them back in the lineup, i assume the worst…i just can’t help it…
Damion Easley took Castillo’s spot in the field, while Angel Pagan took his spot in the batting order.
The following e-mail was sent to me late last night, clearly from a Phillies fan, which reads:
“So, the only way you can beat us is if Jimmy Rollins is out of the lineup and we make four errors.”
…what hurts here, is that i have no response…until the Mets win a few from the Phillies, i need to keep my trap shut…and i hate that…one at a time, though, buddy…and, yes, i’ll take them any way i can…

Tagged SNY |Following last night’s game, Willie Randolph was asked by a
reporter if he was relieved to finally get a bounce or two in his favor against the Phillies, who always seem to get the bounce in their favor instead, to which he responded…
Tagged Willie Randolph |“They’ve been very fortunate, and we’ve given them opportunities – and that’s the way the game goes…You know, the games that we lost, the ones you guys are talking about, the eight or nine in a row, those games could have gone either way and at least four or five them we could have won. Fortunate bloops, little bouncers, rollers, an umpires call, all those things come in to play. So, you know, we’ve never felt there is any dominance against us. They won some games and that happens in baseball – where you’re gonna lose some games they should win and vice-a-versa…
“There’s nothing in our heads that they’re better than we are, that they’re in our heads or that kind of crap – that’s baseball…
“Tonight, they gave us some opportunities and when we played them last year we gave them a lot of opportunities and they took advantage of them. That’s the name of the game. Both teams are very evenly matched, and we respect each other, and you go out and play…
“But, the part about people thinking there’s some hex or jinx or some type of advantage is ridiculous.”
During last night’s win over the Phillies, Mike Pelfrey (1–0) allowed two runs and five hits while walking two and striking out three through five innings.
Willie Randolph on Pelfrey, following the game:
“Nice job out of Mike tonight. Nice job. Good for him, and good for his confidence to get him going. He threw the ball well, got a little scattery at times but it’s good to get that win under his belt. I look forward to his next start…
The name of the game in this league is to be consistent. We know what he’s capable of doing and the thing is for him to believe he can do it consistently…This is just one start, but for him it’s nice to get off on the right foot.”
Pelfrey was 0–7 in 10 starts before getting his first win last season.
Brian Schneider on Pelfrey, following the game:
“I’m proud of him…He worked around the plate all night, he pounded the strike zone. They fouled off a lot of pitches, but I think he could have gone a lot deeper in the game. But, you’ve got to hand it to him and like I said, I’m proud of him…We watched a lot of tape, and we established what we wanted to do and he stuck to the game plan really well. He stayed with me and did a great job. I just wish he could have gone deeper.”
Pelfrey, on Pelfrey, following the game:
“One thing I’ve quit doing is I’ve quit reading everything. I quit paying attention to all that stuff…If I come out here and I perform, I think they’ll find a way to keep me around…You never want anybody to go down. But when Pedro went down I thought, ‘Hey, I’ve got to step up.’ I want to be one of those guys they can hand the ball to every fifth day and not have to worry about it.”
…the thing i keep taking away from the game is how confident and comfortable he looked, which is something that always seemed to be missing from his previous starts…hopefully, this is the start of something real…

In a post to Always Amazin, Matt Artus writes what most fans are likely feeling today, which is, “Good win, now do it again.”
The Brooklyn Met Fan recalls a moment, which was captured during last night’s broadcast on SNY, in which Johan Santana walked across the dugout to give Mike Pelfrey a hug.
Speaking of SNY, It’s Mets for Me wonders what is going on with Keith Henandez’s recent wardrobe choices, comparing him to the Joker from Batman.
Lastly, in the New York Sun, Tim Marchman explains why the San Francisco Giants are baseball’s version of the Knicks.
…honestly, i tried reading tim’s column, but was quickly distracted by the girl who looks like Holly Valance in the ad on the page’s right…sorry, tim…
