During last night’s win over the Phillies, Mike Pelfrey (1–0) allowed two runs and five hits while walking two and striking out three through five innings.
Willie Randolph on Pelfrey, following the game:
“Nice job out of Mike tonight. Nice job. Good for him, and good for his confidence to get him going. He threw the ball well, got a little scattery at times but it’s good to get that win under his belt. I look forward to his next start…
The name of the game in this league is to be consistent. We know what he’s capable of doing and the thing is for him to believe he can do it consistently…This is just one start, but for him it’s nice to get off on the right foot.”
Pelfrey was 0–7 in 10 starts before getting his first win last season.
Brian Schneider on Pelfrey, following the game:
“I’m proud of him…He worked around the plate all night, he pounded the strike zone. They fouled off a lot of pitches, but I think he could have gone a lot deeper in the game. But, you’ve got to hand it to him and like I said, I’m proud of him…We watched a lot of tape, and we established what we wanted to do and he stuck to the game plan really well. He stayed with me and did a great job. I just wish he could have gone deeper.”
Pelfrey, on Pelfrey, following the game:
“One thing I’ve quit doing is I’ve quit reading everything. I quit paying attention to all that stuff…If I come out here and I perform, I think they’ll find a way to keep me around…You never want anybody to go down. But when Pedro went down I thought, ‘Hey, I’ve got to step up.’ I want to be one of those guys they can hand the ball to every fifth day and not have to worry about it.”
…the thing i keep taking away from the game is how confident and comfortable he looked, which is something that always seemed to be missing from his previous starts…hopefully, this is the start of something real…

I really thought he was going to lose it in the 5th inning, when he kept going 3-2 on guys, with tons of foul balls. That double play to end the inning was a god sent.
The best part of his game yesterday is his groundball to fly-out ratio which is 11-2 …. He even had 3Ks…. I’ll take that every start…
Pelfrey will be very interesting to watch this year. Last year, he would have imploded after that double play. Maybe Schneider could have a better influence on him than Lo Duca. it’s only one game, but I think it is safe to say, it has been the Mets biggest game thus far in the young season. good for him. now let’s hope Maine is more relaxed and benefits from being on his normal schedule tonight.
Schneider has a reputation of being a great handler of pitchers getting a lot of credit for what the Nats were able to do with their pitching staff as down as it has been. Hopefully he can have a good influence on Pelf. I know one thing is I do not believe we would have heard LoDuca say we watched a lot of film together and worked on the gameplan. Schneider seems to have a great work ethic and to be the kind of player that will breakdown his opponents to gain an edge.
I was initially against the Lastings Milledge trade, however hearing quotes like this from Schneider have made me believe that it was the right move. He offers praise, but also references the biggest problem with Pelfrey’s start last night: high pitch count. If Mike’s going to be successful at the big league level (and thus useful to the Mets), he’s going to have to go deeper into games. But all in all, a good first start.
I look at Milledge in Washington and I think that maybe the “attitude problems” that got him traded may be exactly what this team lacks.
agree 100%, I was at opening day and would love to have LMillz batting with bases over Ryan Chuch but good thing Schneider’s defense was so good, 2 past balls if good right? Thanks to Willy for running LMillz out of town.
If anyone ran Milledge out of town, it was himself. I think it still remains to be seen if he’ll be missed or not….i don’t care how urgent people think every game is, it’s still April 10 (god forbid we throw reality into the equation)
The 2nd inning hurt Pelfrey’s chance of going deep, through no fault of his own. If Reyes makes the DP, Pelfrey pitches the 6th. Or if Delgado doesn’t hold Burrell on with Jenkins batting.
It was also that 4th inning when he threw at least 10 pitches to Jenkins, and about 27 total in the inning.
That being said, this was a Brian Bannister like performance … so fans should be happy about that.
In total agreement with you there Mikey. A little rough 2nd inning, but that 4th did him in, or should I say the bottom of the third did him in,lol. Sitting on the bench for that long third inning cooled him down, lost him his sharpness. 27 pitches for 3 batters kind of shows that, especially when he was pretty much cruising before that.
Reading schneider’s comments, it sounds like he is also taking a small shot at willy yanking him after 5, saying he could have gone deeper (he says it 2x in the quote!)
Seems like schneider will be a good barometer for willie’s handling of the pitching staff …
Hmm… I don’t think you can really criticize Willie for yanking a guy with a 100 pitch count.
I agree that Willie had to take him out… but this is the second straight game that schneider has said “he could have gone deeper.”
I’ve was against the Lastings trade, but now I’ve learned to move on.
I like Schneider, he seems to always have good quotes at the end of the game. Even though its just talk, hes showing that he cares about the pitching staff.
Could be that Schneider’s used to a pitching staff that had every last drop squeezed out of them through the sheer necessity that they weren’t very good.
At what point does Willie consult the man catching the pitcher? Schneider was brought here in part because of his ability to manage the game. If he is saying that the pitcher has more to give, why not trust his instincts? He is catching so he can gauge velocity, movement, etc. Peterson is all about stats and barometrics (sp?) Willis is all about his “gut” Schneider is in a much better position to make his point.
Especially on matters of when to pull pitchers, I think Willie consults very closely with Peterson a lot. He’s the one who keeps the pitch counts.
This early in the season, when Pelfrey is not stretched out and has just come off 11-days of not starting, they did the right thing by pulling him at about 100 pitches.
Agreed, once he got that 5th inning completed, I knew he was done. I was praying for him that he could finish that inning so he could qualify for the win. There was no way he could have gone further. Scnieder’s comment had more to do with Pelf being efficient than it did about pushing him further.
Not only that, but the team did have a considerable lead. No reason not to pull him.
That’s how it came out but I can assure you he was not bashin Willie there, you have to look at the context. He is clearly saying that Pelfery could have gone deeper if he didn’t get so many foul balls against him.
BMF is in for some traffic, I bought my GO BIG PELF shirt per the deal on the earlier thread!
So that’s where you can get them. Thanks!
Great attitude backed-up by a nice, solid performance… I likey!
If anyone thinks we would not have been better off with L.MillZ rather than Church in RF and signing another “defensive” catcher you are fooling yourself. Willy needs to head back over to the AL his care free attitude makes me sick!
I love these things: If you believe this, you’re a fool! If you thought this, you’re kidding yourself!
Posts on Metsblog are a lot funnier after a win
the thing i like about Big Pelf is that he worked quick which i think is something maybe santana has something to do with that and didnt let the reyes error bother him he bounced right back…im glad to see that from him because like he said he needs to step up and take the ball every fifth day because of the injurys.
Speaking of the Reyes error… what the f is wrong with that guy?
I get that ppl are sick of Willie already but i really think ppl just need to relax its APRIL not Sept. ppl this team is not built to go on long losing streaks and when they find their rhythm which i know they will LOOK OUT because thats whats gonna happen.
if you got in on the pact/deal, go get your go big pelf shirt! Per the El Duque thread about if he took the W , we support and get the shirt!
GO BIG PELF
I have been loudly asserting that Pelfrey is no good. That he is a one pitch pitcher with no business in the big leagues. Last night he looked good. I hope he is proving me wrong.
I post this because I think it is important to be accountable.
Okay Pelf, do it again, and make me look foolish.
trust me dude, going into last night’s game i just shook my head and said i’ll be thrilled if he gives up 3 runs in 5 innings and i’m one of his biggest supporters!
however, he looked great last night. he should have gone one extra inning and given up one less run. also, I’m not sure how much this matters but he did get 12 days between starts so couldn’t he have pitched one extra inning even at being at 100 pitches?
The difference that I noticed was his confidence which in turn reflected in his aggresiveness. Pelf’s case is in the head cause he was blessed with everything else.
Nice Job Pelfrey! Keep it up!
