Jordan, can you tell us a bit more about Argenis Reyes? I liked what I saw out of him during Spring Training. Is he an older player in AAA, or a legit prospect? Considering the team’s lack of depth in the 2nd base dept. is he a viable call-up candidate if Castillo is out longer?

Also, I’ve heard Dylan Owen being tabbed as an organizational player, given the lack of stuff, but he was excellent in Brooklyn last year, and it appears that he is off the a nice start this year at high A….What is the team’s opinion on him?

    Thanks, and great work!

with Owen, I think its going to be all about being effective with his less than stellar stuff. Nice to see him handling the FSL so far.

      • FBones24 says:

I have never seen Owen pitch but his numbers last year were amazing. He obviously has to have something….he had a high strikeout to walk ratio last year didn’t he?

        • Nate W. says:

He was way too advanced for the NYPL last year. About all we can take from his dominance is that the Mets were trying to win a title with the Cyclones and declined chances to move him up to the awful Savannah team who was dead in the water by the time of the draft.

        • Nate W. says:

that said, I would like to hear the ‘professionals’ opinions of him as well.

    • Danny1986 says:

I agree on Reyes. The kid looked really good in Spring Training. Good plate discipline and drove the ball well. Quite a surprise considering his 4-year minor league stats in the CLEV organization aren’t incredibly impressive.

Great to see Kunz, Carp and Evans off to great starts. I would not be shocked if next year we have Evans and Carp battling out for a first base position. Kunz might be for the Mets what Chamberlin was for the Yankees last year, hard-throwing righty who dominates the 8th, just in case Heilman or Sanchez don’t solidify it.

    • backinbusiness says:

0 hits through 3.1 is fantastic. the BP can sure use the help. will be fun to see him progress.

    • altru426 says:

If Carp and Evans can both have solid years and stay healthy, and Evans can adapt well to playing LF, would be nice to see 2 more home grown guys join the big league club next year.

      • altru426 says:

can’t forget Murphy either…maybe move him to 2B? I know corner infielder is way different than middle infielder..but the guy is a natural hitter…Murphy, Carp, and Evans is a nice 3,4,5 for the B-Mets

  3. rogasm says:

I really like this Minor League feature. Last year it was somewhat sporadic. Like that it is more consistent now.

  4. altru426 says:

Matt, please keep these minor league reports coming. They are great! I love to hear how they are doing.

  5. GravediggerHebner says:

I agree with rogasm and altru426, I love these reports. Thank you and please keep it up!

  6. DerekBellsMustache says:

    what is a zephyr?

  7. Nate W. says:

keep in mind that Carp is repeating AA, so he should be in for a good year there. If he was slightly above average in AA it would be a another step backwards for him.

    • Benny Blanco from da Bronx says:

He may be repeating AA but to put it in perspective he was injured most of last season with a wrist injury he got during spring training I think. Also he played it as a 20 year old, and now he’s playing it as a 21 year old, he’s right on track.
He’d be a college senior right about now, his prrogress isn’t bad.
I’m just excited about him becoming trade bait.

  8. backinbusiness says:

    Ugh–Rotoworld says:

Castillo’s knee is swollen, but the team didn’t think an MRI was necessary, and Castillo thinks the stiffness could be related to the cold weather. He doesn’t think he’ll wind up on the DL, but the Mets had Fernando Tatis play second base for the third time in his career at Triple-A on Wednesday.

    Greatly prefer cultivating A. Reyes…

  9. murdertron3000 says:

I would also appreciate frequent minor league reports, as minorleaguebaseball.com is blocked by my work filter as a gambling site(?).

Seems strange at first, but then again if you ARE gambling on minor league baseball you have a very serious problem and must be stopped.

  10. Benny Blanco from da Bronx says:

Anytime Ruben Tejada gets on base whether its a hit or a walk, its a cause for celebration because he was born in 1989, my goodness.

  11. the_other_matt says:

2B Argenis Reyes, batting lead off and playing shortstop, went 2-for-3 with a walk at the plate

Are they trying him at SS to have him as a backup SS for Jose and 2B Castillo?

  12. the_other_matt says:

He must have discriminating pictures of Minaya.

  13. the_other_matt says:

    duh – meant incriminating.
