Jose Reyes left tonight’s night’s game in the sixth inning with a tight left hamstring.
…Update…10:01 pm…
Following the game, Willie Randolph told reporters that Reyes’s hamstring had been feeling tight of late, he doesn’t think this is any thing series, and it was probably brought on more by the damp whether, saying, “Any time your catalyst gets a little sore, you want to be cautious with it, so I thought I’d get him out of there.”
“He did not seem concerned by it,” Randolph said, adding that most players feel tight this time of year.
…i don’t know, man…if you watched SNY’s Post Game Show, he looked pretty concerned to me…
Reyes told reporters that he does not expect to play tomorrow.
…frankly, it’s a good excuse to get the kid some rest…sit down…take a breather…and be safe…

Where’s the red cross??
Hahah.
I think the hope is that it’s not serious enough to warrant a red cross.
i think its time to demote brady clark who hasnt done sheit and call up anderson hernandez since Easley, and marlon anderson both can handle the outfield pretty well and easley looked pretty shaky at short which goes to say the mets dont have a real backup shortstop unless castillo is moved over for tomorrows game. I say bring up anderson hernandez who has a hot bat right this moment and hope he can eventually translate that into the bigs and even though reyes might be out a day or two you never know.
Bringing up Anderson Hernandez because the Mets don’t have a true backup shortstop is a pretty good idea–I don’t know that I would do it, but it certinly makes sense. That being said, his offense should not be a factor in the decision. You are right about him being hot at the moment, but he has never shown the ability to hit in the majors–and there is no reason to expect him to do so now.
Give Jose the day off tomorrow. He’s hitting .111 in 9 abs vs Sheets. We need Jose Jose Jose Jose all season long.
Said he won’t play tomorrow in the postgame. Reyes looks like he’s about to cry.
Reyes looked a bit worried during the interview. Yikes! Rest!
I think you guys might be reading a little much into Reyes’ post-game interview. He came out of the game early with a tight hamstring, will not be playing tomorrow, and makes a living with his legs, so he’s not going to be happy. I didn’t see anything along the lines of him looking like he was about to cry, or looking worried. He just seemed upset because he cannot be certain when he will play next.
Obviously, we cannot be happy about this. Maybe it will be worse than we can even imagine now. But there was nothing in that interview to suggest that we should be freaking out now–or that Reyes is.
i think he is just really down… Willie said he ahs been feeling sore… let him rest
tomorrow lineup w/o Jose
Pagan LF
anderson 2B
Wright 3B
Beltran CF
Delgado1B
Church RF
Easley SS
Schneider C
Santana P
What do u think?
The way Pagan’s hitting, Reyes getting some rest tomorrow and coming out of the lineup might be a blessing in disguise. I’d like to see Castillo back tomorrow, too.
That looks pretty good to me. I’d run with it. Marlon and Damion both have pretty good numbers versus Sheets.
Seems logical. I would consider hitting Church second, except it makes the lower part of the order a bit suspect. I mean, I’m not sure I want Marlon hitting sixth, but if you switch him with Easley, then you have lefties back-to-back at 7 and 8 (and three in a row, if you count Johan).
So, to make a short story long, and then summarize it, I agree with your lineup suggestion for tomorrow. :)
I think Castillo plays tomorrow…
Castillo
Pagan
Wright
Beltran
Delgado
Church
Easley
Schneider
Santana
If Castillo is back I agree with this lineup fo sho.
I think I would switch Castillo and Pagan. Castillo hasn’t exactly been tearing the cover off the ball, and now he’s been off for a couple of days. I’d rather have him in the position of having to give himself up to advance the runner, than to put Pagan in that position, when he’s been hot.
Amazing how much of an impact one player has. This looks real decent.
Second time in the last two years. I wouldn’t be too worried. Let him rest it now, early in the season. He should be fine.
Bad Weather all weekend . Let him watch some baseball from the bench.
No comment on your comment….just on your name…”leavethecowebell”? What in the world can anybody have against Cowbell Man?
He sucks.
All he wants to do is be on T.V.
Plus he is the biggest rally killer since Jeremy Burnitz. I have never seen the Mets get a big hit when that weirdo is banging that bell anywhere near my section.
I don’t know how concerned he is with being on TV (especially since I am not sure I have ever seen him shown on TV–maybe once or twice), but every game there are thousands of people that do things just to be on TV–the “K-dros” with their funny wigs, any number of people with signs, the people with funny hats and make-up, the people who do silly dances or the like. And I’ll assume the comment about him being a rally-killer was a joke, since it would be silly to suggest that he has any impact on how well the players play.
That being said, the man walks around the stadium the whole game, which cannot be easy. He bangs his cowbell in an effort to rally the fans, and it works–everybody cheers when he walks by, and everyone claps along with his beat. And he always has a smile on his face and keeps going throughout the game, no matter what–he deserves a lot of credit.
No , Really Are YOU the cowbell man ?
We’ve got a wiseguy here….
We need more cowbell!
i gotta fever, and the only prescription – is more cowbell.
I have to second leavethecowbell here. I’ve only met the guy briefly, but he really grandstands alot; he’s sort a supersized version of the drunk guy that turns around and doesn’t watch the game to stand up and berate everyone else for not joining him in a let’s go Mets chant at a dull moment.
My feeling is that he’s 100% about himself, and he’s stolen a gimmick that many others have had before him.
Plus, and again I’m echoing leavethecowbell here, every time I hear the damn thing I sense a pop-out coming.
Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken would be saddened by these anti-cowbell comments. But then their answer to raise their spirits would surely be more clanging of the cowbell!! Clank-clank-clank!!!
I’ve gotten to know Eddie (CowBellMan’s name) through many years of interacting with him at Shea. My kids love him, and I even ran into him at a Mets game in Philly last summer. He lives in the Bronx and goes to every single home game (for something like 25 years running) even though it means he gets home at a terrible hour. I’ve also run into him many times on the 7 train going out to the game. He’s knowledgeable and a huge fan. What’s not to like?
You refferring to SNL right? Oh my god that episode was hilarious. First time I ever saw SNL and my god I laughed for about an hour straight during the cowbell scene.
WE NEED MORE COWBELL!
Duaner just threw a shutout inning. Hopefully we’ll get him back next week.
They said that he could be with the team on Tuesday. We’ll see if he pitches again tomorrow.
I don’t know, Matt…like I said to the commenters, I didn’t see the concern in Reyes’ interview that you saw. Of course, you still can’t go by what Willie said, since he said Reyes had been sore for a couple of days, and Reyes said it first started today. If anything, *that* concerns me, since Willie shouldn’t feel the need to lie or make things up if Jose is definitely OK.
Really? The body language was there. He looked pretty upset. I’ve seen a fair share of Reyes interviews, and this was a complete 180. Obviously that’s expected, since he’s hurt, but he looked real down about it.
I have to think that the awkward contact at home plate night before last has something to do with this. Awkward contortions like that can create problems, especially early in the season. Jose has a problem with close plays at the plate anyway; remember the collision in Boston a few years ago? SOmeone needs to help him come up with a plan of attack for those situations since he doesn’t seem to know how to handle them. Not big enough to bowl over the catcher (and he’s prone to getting hurt that way) so some other kind of outside slide. But he needs to work on that.
If Reyes needs to sit out, Castillo better come back tomorrow.
If he still can’t go, put him on the DL and get someone else up here.
Let’s see, if Easley goes down, do you put Wright at SS and Casanova at 3B?
Yes, the def need to make a roster move if Castillo is still on the pine. I’d rather have Figgys Dad play 3B than Casanova.
if easley goes down… castillo gets out there at less then 100%.
call up anderson hernandez!!!!!!!!
How about Argenis Reyes….He’s having a decent start in AAA. If not now, than maybe later in the season. Numero uno would hurt our lineup.
you dont put castillo on the dl until you know how bad reyes is. worst thing they could do isdl him, and then also have reyes out for 2 weeks and have to depend on the backups when castillo could have been back in a few days. a couple of days of easley/m.anderson is a hell of a lot better than a week or more of a.anderson/m.anderson. of course this is a mute point if either is going to be sidelined for any length of time.
Mike Dougherty of Westchester Journal News says Castillo won’t play tomorrow. Still feels pain in his knee.
i say they should shoot Castillo and put him out of his misery and ours. lol
does that mean pagan hits leadoff tomorrow?
Anyone going to the game tomorrow and want to pick up my 2 Mezz Reserved for Sunday or for Next Week (any games) for buy one get one free! Section 23 Mezz reserved aisle seats. I can get you next weeks seats in the city on Monday also, or bring em tomorrow. Tix can also be emailed from my Mets account. Email me at john.bluemke@gmail DOT com
Remember, what Willie says to the media and what is actual reality are two different things. Reyes could have huddled up into a ball in the corner of the clubhouse and screamed at the top of his lungs of excruciating pain, and Willie would have still downplayed it and said it was nothing serious.
you dont cry wolf until you know its a wolf. thats the fans job.
I was left wondering after that interview if Reyes would be in such dire straits if he were hitting .450 with 2 triples and a HR.
He needs time off for soul-searching as much as anything else.
Yet, he did rip a double in the 12th inning and scored the winning run.
He’s the key to our team offensively.
I wonder if that slide into home plate and Chris Coste caused or aggravated this hamstring “tightness’?
Shocker…ANOTHER hamstring injury.
Say what you want….but I thought Spring Training was for players to CONDITION themselves….you know being that they are millionaire professional athletes, who are supposed to be in tip top shape.
The Mets continue to drop like flies. Soon this roster will be a AAA lineup. You’ve already lost your up the middle combo within a week. Unreal. We aren’t 2 weeks through the season.
I play softball 3 times a week in the cold, in the mud, in damp chilly weather, and thats usually after a hangover….but somehow all these little wussy excuses of being tight, or sore, etc. never stops me from takin the field and bustin my but. And I don’t get a single dollar.
These guys are so coddled its almost laughable. $$$$ is all they see. Money, a future, and more money.
Hmmm……a very suspect view. Having millions does not make people invinsible. Enjoy your beer league.
Your not being serious, are you?
As a heart attack. Certain injuries that are obvious, I have sympathy for but others I don’t. And the Mets seem to have tons of phantom injuries.
I’ve watched plenty of video from baseball 30-40 years ago. The Mantles, Frank Robinsons, etc. these guys played every day, and went all out. They were never hurt.
Castillo has a sore knee. Reyes has a tight hammy. Alou had surgery a month ago that required 2 stitches and still hasn’t swung a bat. It gets tiring. If Reyes tore his hammy, its one thing….this is another. If its “tight” have the trainer work on it in the morning, slap some icy hot on there and play baseball.
I see what you’re saying, but the idea is that you sit these guys so the injuries don’t worsen. A tight hammy becomes a strained hammy, becomes a pulled hammy, and that means months of no-Reyes baseball. We can’t afford that, and I have no problem whatsoever with him sitting.
Castillo and El Duque, on the other hand, are another story. With these guys, give me a freakin’ break.
I understand your point. I don’t think players back in the day like Ty Cobb, etc ever missed a game for all these little twinges of pain, tightness, soreness….
Having said that, if a hamstring goes, and goes all the way it can be a long injury to recover from as shown by Endy last year.
Maybe thats cus softball if for old men who are soft with bum knees. Get overyourself loser
Good thing Ruben Gotay isn’t around anymore.
Of course not. Really…a move that will be questioned for the next 4 years.
Subject A) A hobbled 2nd baseman, well past his prime. Slightly above average fielding, not very quick, and can drive the ball about 100 feet. Signed to a 4 year deal.
Subject B) A Young, hungry athlete who really wanted to be a Met. Subpar fielding that could have been improved upon, healthy, and has a solid bat, with power. Wouldn’t cost much.
Thank you Willie Randolph. I hope you enjoy Luis Castillo for the next 4 years. He will be playing in a wheelchair starting in 2009.
Agreed. Agreed agreed agreed agreed.
And not for anything, but the Easley contract was a little ridiculous as well. The guy was coming back from a pretty gruesome ankle injury. I don’t know how you can offer him another contract without having seen how he’d recover. Especially with him getting up there in age.
I went down to ATL for both games (originally all 3, damn rain…) last weekend, and seeing Gotay pinch-hit twice really got to me. Brady Clark. Wonderful.
after gotay struck out on sunday, the kids behind me (elementary school age) yelled “AND THAT”S WHY WE GOT RID OF YOU” lol. I’d rather have anderson hernandez’s glove as a backup myself. Maybe we could have grafted Gotay’s bat onto Hernandez’s glove?
Finally, somebody with a clue. Anderson hernandez is a much better option then Gotay on the bench. People, tell me exactly what Gotay can do that Endy Chavez or Marlon Anderson cant do, and why we needed him so bad. This guy isnt even the backup 2B over Martin Prado. That should ell you all you need to know. I love Gotay, but he is a decent bat, and absolutely positively nothing else more.
Darkhorse,
You my friend, are crazy. I agree that the Mets shouldn’t have given Castillo 4 years. But he is still a good hitter and his defense is better than slightly above average. Let him rest his knees that were just recently surgically repaired. I want him to be 100% late in the season and if that means he gets a few days off here and there, so be it.
As for “subject b”:
I would have loved to have kept Gotay, but he did not fit the needs of what the Mets needed. They needed a right handed hitter. He is a better left hand hitter and as you said yourself, is a sub-par fielder. He wouldn’t have been starting even if we still had him. He would probably be in AAA right now if he cleared waivers.
And, one more thing.
You say this is Willie Randolph’s fault for signing Castillo to a 4-year deal?
That is Omar Minaya’s choice not Willie’s. Let him manage how he wants to manage and just let the season play out.
If you don’t like what is going on, don’t be a Mets fan. I know I am happy with this team and I am confident they can win.
Castillo is great defensively and thats it. He cant drive the ball and is a liability offensively period.
He is the perfect 2-hole hitter on this team. He is a beautiful bunter and knows where to put the ball when Jose is on base.
Ruben Gotay is not a starting baseball player in the major leagues. People just dont get it. This moron writes out a worst case cneario of Castillo, and then doesnt even mention the fact that there is not a worse RHP in the world then Gotay. The same thing is happening with Angel Pagan, a 4th outfielder, and absolutely nothing more has a hot start and we are ready to give him Alou’s job and make him the LF of the future. Craziness.
RHH*
Are you talking about me?
Where’s Frank Tavaras when you need him? Or Sergio Ferrer? Hey I’d even take Pepe Frias! (1970’s references)
Forget those guys, what we need is for Wilbur Huckle to finally get his chance (’60’s reference)
Umm, why isn’t anyone asking why Reyes is even playing if Willie Randolph knew about this tightness beforehand. Especially in this weather. Reyes is one of, if not, the most important player on this team. Why mess around with his health, when you know he has a history of leg problems? If this injury turns out to be serious, Randolph has to be held accountable. You can’t expect the player to ask out of the lineup – that’s why we have managers, to make those decisions for them! Ugh! Could you imagine the Yankees treating Jeter this way?
This does explain though why Reyes has seemed slower than in the past (although his slower is still faster than 99% of everyone else).
I’d sit him tomorrow and Sunday, with the off day on Monday, and have him come back Tuesday. Better safe than sorry. I think Reyes gets a bit worn down sometimes.
Anyone else get the sneaking suspicion that Willie pulled Reyes—after not running out the double play ball, and messing up the cut-off play—just to give him a kick in the ass. Willie has done it before, and the way Jose is looking at the plate it certainly looks like he needs one. Reyes seems not to be concentrating on putting the ball on the ground, and is swinging at pitches all over the strike zone.
If you ask me, the look on Jose’s face during his post-game interview reminded me of that of a child who had just been yelled at by his dad. As did his “I don’t think I’ll play tomorrow” declaration.
I got the same exact feeling out of this. Jose’s approach has been awful, and looked none the better today despite his game-ending double–>slide at home. Maybe Willie’s just confident with the way some of the other guys, Pagan, Church, etc. are hitting and confident in Santana’s ability to deal tomorrow and is taking this opportunity to tell him to calm the hell down and play baseball well, which is what everyone’s been screaming for someone to do since last summer.
he messed up a cut off play? because i’m pretty sure ron darling explained why he let that ball go.
if his hamstring was anything serious he would have come out right away, sny said the injury was from running out the dp ball in the 4th, i dont think it’ll be anything serious, but for real, these guys are too fragile nowadays .. youd have to stab me in the knee cap to take me out of a baseball game.
How many baseball games do you play a year? 20? 30? Let’s see you play 162, tough guy.
If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s people who make it seem like anybody can do what professional baseball players do. You can’t. Repetitively doing just about anything is going to wear you out and hurt you after awhile. Even something as easy and trivial as writing or walking. Wake up.
Is Rey Ordonez is still available? j/k
For sure, take it easy
no pt to risk a Reyes injury……..Castillo went down but they won 3 in a row with Easley filling in
I guess Easley plays SS now……………how about seeing the middle IF with Damian at SS and Marlon at 2B,haha……….oh wells they won!
just coincidence that the mets win three in a row once castillo goes out and pagan moves to the two hole?
“just coincidence that the mets win three in a row once castillo goes out and pagan moves to the two hole?”
Absolutely, and nothing more. I feel so horrible for Angel Pagan, he will be getting mercilessly booed by June (if he is still in the lineup then), because everybody thinks this guy is the second coming and when his average inevitably falls to 270ish like he normally hits, people will boo him, spoiled by his hot start. What is it with NY fans and prematurely falling in love with glorified bench guys after a week of playing. Remember shane Spencer? Pagain is good, a nice 4th or 5th OF, but this is Alou’s job when he gets bac and people have to realize that Pagan is just a nice replacement guy, he is not Carl Crawford
i think you miscontsrued my comment. i was making a statement about castillo, not pagan. addition by subtration.
he’s my favorite player on the team but reyes looks lost, hamstring or no hamstring
all this panic is getting to me.
let me point one thing out to everyone.
JOHAN SANTANA is making his Shea Stadium debut today. Give Reyes the weekend off. send down Clark and bring up Hernandez. but most importantly, sit back and enjoy watching Johan pitch at Shea.
Does Clark have options? I don’t know… anyone? Not that I would be against DFA’ing him, I’m just curious if this move can be made without putting Clark through waivers.
I don’t know the answer but the point is that when Alou comes back, I think it will eb Clark sent down anyway. right now, they need some infield help so sending Clark down now to get another infielder up makes sense to me.
I guess if Castillo is ready to go and the Mets are confident this won’t nag, a move will not be necessary as long as Reyes only needs a game or two to rest the hammy.
Yeah, I am pumped for today’s game. The sun is out, and we have our first real ACE in years going! Since Gooden, have we ever really had an Ace in his prime?
Cone? – I think he really took off after he left the Mets
Saberhagen? – His best years were behind him and he was often injured
Leiter? – Never a true ace to begin with
Pedro? – Past his prime when he arrived
I know exactly where you’re coming from. I don’t remember have this confidence in a #1 starter since gooden and coney. There’s an excitement that is felt when these guys take the mound. You almost can’t miss a pitch.
unfortunately, those out of market will NOT be able to see johan’s shea debut. bummer. it’s blacked out due to fox and its coverage of the sox/yanks.
I think it will still be broadcast. it’s a 1pm game and not on FOX’s national broadcast.
I guess we’ll see but I am pretty sure it will be on mlb.tv
Met game’s at 1. Sox Yanks is at 4.
Out of market games are supposed to be blacked out from 1 to 7 pm on Saturdays to protect the FOX game of the week. This is supposed to be true for both the Extra Innings package and the MBLTV internet package. However last Saturday afternoon, the games were not blacked out on MLBTV. They were blacked out on Extra Innings. Hopefully the games will be available on MLBTV this Saturday as well, but I’m thinking last week was a fluke.
By the way…. I’m only talking about fans who live outside of the Mets’ home market. Obviously fans inside the Mets’ market (NYC and surrounding areas) are not impacted by the blackouts.
I don’t think it is blacked out for me.
I don’t know the rules. I just know games were working last week and it looks to be working this week.
not on for me…not even on the schedule for mlb ei.
Pedro was most definitely ace quality in 2005, nitpicking though
I saw metsblog.com add after a commerical for last nights game!
Why are the Extra Innings games blacked out in the day time?? anyone know?? this sucks!!
FOX negotiated it in their last contract so the only afternoon baseball on TV during Saturday afternoons would be their game of the week and any games local to your local market.
This has had a bigger impact recently because FOX now has a game of the week every Saturday of the year where previously they would not start broadcasting baseball until around Memorial day.
Keith Hernandez in particular is always going crazy about the difficulty of recovering from hamstring tweaks and what not. I’m just hoping it’s not a 15 day DL trip or more.
Checking the minor league box scores I saw that Fernando Tatis has been playing SS the last two nights. Is it possible he is getting his feet wet at SS to prepare for a potential trip to the DL for Reyes?
