postGame: Mets 4 Brewers 2
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 11, 2008 9:47 pm

The Mets (5–4) beat the Brewers (6–4) by the score of 4 to 2 in a Shea Stadium tonight.

For a recap and boxscore, go to SNY.

how happy is Nelson Figueroa right now…i can’t even imagine…in his long-awaited, first start for the Mets, he allowed two runs and two hits while striking out six in six innings…he even beat out a bunt for a base hit…when the game ended, the smile on his face said it all…be proud, he’s one of us…

…by the way, i love that he always pitches from the stretch…

Rual Casanova drove in a run, and Shea Stadium did not blast Oh Casanova by Klymaxx…i’m so disappointed…

…in five appearances so far this season, Joe Smith has allowed just one run to score…

…phew, Aaron Heilman, who, one night after blowing a lead to the Phillies, rebounded to set all three batters down in the eighth inning…again, phew…

…i would like to have seen the Mets tack on a few more runs in the fourth, despite scoring the three that they did…with the bases loaded, and the chance to put the game away, Jose Reyes grounded out to end the inning…

…in the seventh, once again, Angel Pagan delivered with an RBI single extending the team’s lead by two runs…the guy just keeps on ticking…he plays alert and aggressive, and i like it…

Carlos Beltran ran down a deep, deep pop up in the right-center field gap, softly catching the ball with a basket catch, to end a small rally in the sixth…nice grab

sounds like a good game (didn’t get to see any, and only saw the score ticker).

As long as Reyes isn’t really hurt bad, a good day all around.

ANd man, if Figgy can keep pitching well for a while, what a lift that would be.

Lets get 7 strong from Johan tomorrow and score a bunch of runs to make it a laugher.

And keep the ground balls up the middle to a minimum!

I will say though that if Reyes is out, Cstillo needs to be back. Can’t have 40% of your bench active but unavailable.

    FIGERO FIGERO FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGEEEEEEEEEEEEERO!

They are banging pots and pans in the streets all over Brooklyn tonight !!

  3. metsforever says:

If Reyes is out for even a day or so, Castillo, or somebody has to go DL for AHern. You can’t live with no bench and no defense. Probably Castillo since they can back date.

    • gbaked says:

or you just run with marlon and damion for a game, and let the other guys have their day behind santana.

no way those guys dont go all out tomorrow. I am looking forward to it.

  4. metsmets17 says:

The Brewer team looks asleep. Santana should dominate tomorrow. Sheets will give us some fits. In the end, I feel good about our chances.

    now the comments start.
omar is a genius for figgy.
    omar got lucky.
figgy is untouchable and the #2 on the team.
willie is a moron for pulling him after 6, even though he hasnt been stretched out.
omar screwed the pooch by not havin an allstar ss in the wings.
trade alou and pedro now, we have the future with pagan and figgy.
    now thats metsblog

  6. metzelaar says:

Hey, when Alou comes back we’ll finally have that right-handed power bat off the bench! Thanks for getting a hernia, buddy. Looks like we found a real starting left fielder.

stumped…best post i ever read, god bless sarcasm…and the ability to not get just flat out mad when you read what some people have to write sometimes…great game figgy, all the best and hope you can help the mets while u are needed, congrats

  8. jstrong says:

omg the sky is falling the mets are terrible fire willie fire omar…

  9. loopenark says:

Matt — a fly ball to the outfield is NOT a pop up.

  10. nrmax88 says:

comments section seems a little empty. Not exactly the 45,000 posts that were here after a loss. Like I have said before, business is probably better for Matt during the days we lose.

On a related note, nice outing from Figgy. He may be able to be a useful swingman for us this year. Very happy to see Heilman bounce back. Tomorrow should be absolutely fantastic if the weather holds up.

Just got back from the game. One of my favorite moments of the night was Figgy warming up to “Lose Yourself” by Eminem. Given his baseball history, could there be a more appropriate song? Then when he has a no-no through 4, you start thinking, “nothing is this storybook is it?”

  13. Broadway Joe says:

    lets go mets good game…

  14. metzelaar says:

Anybody surprised to hear how perfect Figgy’s english is? After hearing his dad, I figured he’d have the Oliver Perez thing going for him, but man. The guy speaks better english than me, and I don’t know any other languages.

    • hyperion4 says:

The guy grew up in New York, went to Brandeis University, and his mother speaks unaccented English. No, I’m not surprised.

  15. killerkill says:

Angel Pagan is the truth. I anticipated that he would be overmatched when the regular season rolled around but he has proven me wrong. It looks like he has a good idea at the plate and he plays hard. Keep it up Angel.

  16. rogasm says:

What a great story…What part of Brooklyn is he from? The only thing that could make the story better is if he went to St. Francis.

  17. hsimms says:

What can I say about Figueroa that hasn’t already been said. His lifelong dream came true. He started for the Mets at Shea. Brooklyn born and as articulate a player as you will find. I hope he sticks.

Angel Pagan as everyone knows by now was a fan favorite with the 2001 Cyclones. IIRC, opening day centerfielder at Jamestown - they opened on the road - and the home opener broadcast on channel 13. A gangly 19 year old with a ton of talent and an ounce of discipline. I know who my choice is to replace Alou as the starting leftfielder in 2009. Mets can use the money on first base and pitching.

  18. johnstearns says:

Figueroa was terrific. I hope this is more than the scouts can crack watching tapes. Pagan is hitting, and he has a brain on the basepaths, Heilman cleaned up, Wags got Fielder, Braun, and Hall. I don’t want to say I could get comfortable, but that was a nice game.

I like our third baseman but damn Hall can catch a ball.

Hope they’ve got the tarp on the field now. Santana vs Sheets…. do not ppd…

  19. lucasbry says:

Was his start really long-awaited? I can guarantee you I was not on the edge of my seat waiting for his start. However, he did a great job all around. Can we just let him pitch a little more, please, before we get ridiculous with this whole thing. I mean, if Aaron Heilman can get the Brewers out, anyone can.

    • darkstar73 says:

you’re right, Heilman’s never got an out before, but as for an above comment, Wright still has problems throwing to 1st, he double clutches way too much, as he did on that dribbler to 3rd that he totally messed the throw on. Obviously I’m nitpicking, but just something I noticed while at the game. BTW, I was the guy in section B, field level, actually cheering for Heilman, instead of all the boos I heard. He looked good though, not sure the boos are a good idea.

      • Constnza81V2.0 says:

Dude, we were probably 50 feet from each other all night. Great game. No boos from me from Heilman though I was chanting for Mota all night to come out of the Mil. bullpen.

      • m00kie says:

Heilman looked pissed on camera. Nice to see him come in and struck out the first two he saw. Good bounce back effort, but still not against the phillies or braves! He does just fine against the rest of the league. Agreed the boos are a bad idea. If you have to boo, hold it until after the gopher ball home run. If you boo, then he strikes out the next two guys, you just look foolish.

    • nrmax88 says:

Yeah, its not like the guy has pitched all over the world for 5 years trying to get back to the majors, or its not like hje finally made the first start for the franchise that drafted him in 1995, or its not like he has battled injury and overcome every odd there has been in the last 5 years. So yeah, I am pretty sure that there is not one person that actually cares one ounce about whether his start was long awaited for you. It was obviously long awaited for him, and that is what matters. Good for him. And besides, you talk about the BRewers as if they have a weak offense, when in reality it is a top 3 in the NL. You talk about Heilman as if he is bad, but in reality he has been a top 3 reliever non closer in the NL over the last 3 seasons. Get over yourself, study the game more, and then maybe come back and leave your thoughts. Maybe they will actually make sense next time.

  20. darkstar73 says:

I was at the game, good all around, loved the pitching performances from everyone, especially of course Nelson, and Heilman looked great, there was no “phew” to it, he looked dominant, so not sure what the phew is for. I know he gave up runs yesterday, but that was yesterday, time to move on, no? As for Pagan, he’s a joy to watch play, however, his arm sucks, I mean, its bad. He’s athletic and all, but his arm is just bad. Overall though, great game, probably would have been a higher scoring game with better weather, but whatever, METS WIN!!!. Also, Delgado didn’t look good this game, good thing there’s more righty pitchers then lefties.

  21. sincekindergarten says:

For all of the crap we give Willie for making boneheaded managerial decisions, going with Heilman the game after he had a meltdown is exactly what he should have done. You get right back up after you’ve been knocked down, and the manager has to have the guts to put you right back in. Kudos for that.

But, the night belonged to Figgy.

And darkstar, Delgado did drive in the first run . . .

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

I was thinking the same thing. Willie got killed last year for not defining roles in the bullpean early on. It’s clear that Heilman is his set-up man this year. Heilman has the ability to do it, let’s get off his back.

    • Danny1986 says:

agreed on Willie move with Heilman.

Fact is…w/o an effective Heilman, this season does not look good. So throwing him back out there was the best move. Because he needs to solve this before next weekend.

  22. christian warrior says:

Even though the crowd was happy that we won the game, the fans were obviously disappointed with the way the fourth inning ended,

It’s not that Reyes grounded out, he grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. That sucked.

  23. Danny1986 says:

Seeing Figuerora last night brought back some memories. I remember when I was a pitcher in Bayside LIttle League and I caught a case of wildness. Seriously nearly maming kids. My dad made me pitch from the stretch the rest of the year. Cured.

  24. maacmets says:

why no meet the mets at all last night. I understand trying to find an 8th inning song, but the meet the mets sing-a-long is something that should never go away
