The Mets (4–4) defeated the Phillies (4–6) by the score of 4 to 3 in 12 innings tonight at Shea Stadium.
For a recap and boxscore, go to SNY.
…now that felt good, didn’t it…that’s what this team has been missing…a bit of drama, some good luck, and fun…
…with the game tied in the 12th inning, and two outs, Jose Reyes ripped a ball to the wall in the gap…reyes pulled in to second with a big clap and an even bigger smile…he looked alive for the first time in months…Angel Pagan then hit a ground ball up the middle and reyes rounded third…a strong throw from Jayson Werth, who was strategically playing shallow in center, reached home at the exact time as reyes, who slide in to home, right in to the shin guard of the catcher, who did his best to block the plate, but the umpire ruled reyes safe and the Mets won…
…the team rushed from the dugout, smiling, hi-fiving and mobbing pagan and reyes, while Taking Care of Business blared from the stadium’s speakers…
…for the first time in a long, long while, i had fun watching this team…and i miss that…and from the looks on the player’s faces, so did they…
…on the final play of the game, reyes may actually have been out, but, wow, it was close…it was a bang-bang play…the umpire was between reyes and the backstop, with the catcher on the other side, so if he did tag reyes on the back – before touching home – then the ump would not have known anyway…nevertheless, he was called safe, so he was safe…
…in the 10th inning, Carlos Beltran struck out to end the inning with the winning run on base…before walking off the field, beltran swung his bat over his head and slammed it in to the ground…don’t tell me this team is not interested in winning, which has always been a silly premise…
…welcome back, John Maine, who allowed just one run and five hits while walking five and striking out one in six innings…
…pagan gets a game ball, but so does Pedro Feliciano, Billy Wagner, Joe Smith, Scott Schoeneweis and Jorge Sosa, who threw five innings of no-run relief…
…more or less all of them faced a tough spot, with runners on base, but they battled through it and won out, particularly schoeneweis, who actually got booed while entering the game to face Chase Utley with two runners on and two outs…but, he got the double play, just like he did during the home opener, but this time his defense turned it to get out of the inning…in fact, scott’s fist pump was quite telling…
…i have no idea if it’ll continue, but pagan is playing with a ton of confidence and he looks great so far…keep it going, man…we’re all behind you…
…speaking of the bullpen, today is not the day to discuss Aaron Heilman, who is totally out of sorts right now…suffice to say, drinks better have been on heilman’s tab last night…
…so, the Mets had fight tonight, stamina and toughness, and it was rewarded with a smile and win…

I’m not sure why “today is not the day to discuss Aaron Heilman”. It was an exciting and (hopefully) momentum-building win. It is definitely not too early in the season to be worried about Heilman, who just can’t seem to get through an inning without hurting the team.
Don’t give up on the guy for two bad outings in a row. Give up on him for three bad outings in a row.
I’m curious why it’s not the day as well. Let me know when we can discuss and over-under on how many homeruns Ryan Howard will hit off of Aaron Heilman to win / tie a game in his career.
I’m going with the over 50 bet.
Why was Heilman facing Howard in the first place. ?
When Willie brought Jose Feliciano into the game he could have double switched with Marlon Anderson replacing Delgado (who made the last out in the previous inning) That way Feliciano could have stayed in the game to face Howard .Willie knew that Utley and Howard were around the corner. Why have Jose face Utley but not Howard?
If not the double switch then why not use SCSCH to face Howard?
It’s actually PEDRO Feliciano. …and there is nothing wrong with how Willie used Heilman there. That is his inning. Heilman is the only one to blame last night.
My bad on the Jose instead of Pedro. The Alzheimers is kicking in today.
LOL … its early. Understood.
I don’t think this is the way it happen if I recall correctly. Church made the last out not Delgado. But you are saying that he should have double switched when he brought in Feliciano? That would have meant that the pitchers spot came up in the next inning either way? Maybe I am missing something. If you are saying that they should have left Feliciano in then he would have had to hit.
Not that it justifies his performance out of the gate, but Heilman tends to be a much better 2nd half pitcher..Below is Heilman’s 3 year performance:
Pre All-Star: 4.33ERA, 8H/9IP, 7k/9IP, 2.5BB/9IP, .247 BAA
15HR’s allowed (160 IP)
Post All-Star: 1.86ERA, 6H/9IP, 8k/9IP, 3BB/9IP, .195 BAA
4HR’s allowed (121 IP)
Totally agree that Scott Schoeneweis was big in his spot. We Mets fans have this thing for getting on him when he screws up. We need to give him his props when he comes through. The hand he got as he left the field was a good move, and well-deserved. Hopefully, he’ll deserve a few more over the course of the season . . .
i don’t think it was audible at all but me and my buddy immediately started cheering for show as loudly and ridiculously as we could when he came in…by his second inning of work it actually was catching on.
(i am actually more positive at games than i am in my comments…go figure)
I heard you man!!! haha, Nah, I’m just kidding. I didn’t. But that’s pretty funny though.
I did the same thing….I can’t stand people that boo the team. Go home if you want to boo the second week in April.
Yo Since, He did so well last night because he was used the right way. Brought in to face LEFTIES!!!! That’s got to be his role. The guy will be good if Willie sticks to that plan.
So far this season Willie has stuck to his plan with Show. There have only been a few times he has faced a RH hitter and that is when a manager took out their LH hitter because Show came in and Willie did not want to have Show come out and not even throw a pitch. Relievers are more valuable than wasting a PH. Or when Show did not get the LH hitter out and there were RH hitters inbetween other good LH hitters like in the opener. Did not help that Feliciano was not even there.
You are right in everything you just said. I don’t put it past Willie to try to use him for a whole inning again, with right handed bats though. We’ll just have to monitor the situation. ;)
Agreed, Show is very effective in the right situation, he needs to come in and get ground balls against lefties. Hes not the kind of guy who can come in and face the heart of the order L,R, L,R and be effective.
However for how much he is getting paid he should be able to, I think thats why fans get on him so much
Yes, it’s too bad Willie feels he has to justify that bad contract given to Show.
I have to admit I held my breath when Jose scored the winning run.. For a split second I thought he had hurt himself, the way he bounced off of Coste. Whew! Big win.
What’s up with Coste bouncing behind the plate right before every pitch? It would bother me as a hitter, and I wonder if it’s just his way of trying to distract the hitter as the pitcher goes into his windup. As a viewer it’s really annoying, never saw a catcher do that before. If you didn’t notice it, watch next time. He bounces with a lot of exaggerated movement right before the pitch is delivered. Maybe the hitters don’t notice but I can also imagine that that kind of exaggerated movement right at that moment is distracting enough.
Must be distracting to the pitchers too.
In fact, Ruiz really, really didn’t help Kendrick out Wednesday either. He set up so, so, soooooo late even after Kendrick was walking everyone and behind in the count. If the guy can’t throw a strike, at least give him something to aim for. Watching the Phils’ catching really makes me glad we have Schneider :)
YES!! It was like 2006 all over again and thats what we want to see. The players running on the field all smiles and high-fives tackiling each other and showing the kind of cheer that we as fans feel after every game and BTO in the background was a flashback to 2006!! I LOVE IT !! keep it up a and LETS GO METS !!!!!!!
Win series against good teams, sweep the bad ones, Let’s Go!
This was an awesome game, shades of 2006 if you ask me. I only hope they can keep it up.
Amen!
Being at last night’s game… staying till the last play…was great, i’m dead tired today but I have to say, the atmosphere, the lets go mets chants when leaving….it was like 2006…. Jose did look happy, I want that to turn around, that INNING right there, is an example of why we need him hitting..
Great job by both bullpens, great game to watch..I hope Heilman can get it together, maybe if/when Duaner comes back, he can relegate to the 6th or 7th inning to gain confidence
I watched the play at the plate over and over and I didn’t see Reyes getting out. He got his hand down right before the tag was laid upon him.
Despite Heilmann the bullpen looked great.
What was even better was our defense. The only lapse was the decision by Maine to go to first instead of third. The hitting is still off but it was a good win.
The winning play would have been the perfect time to barrel over the catcher, though I can understand Reyes not having that mentality… Would have been great to get a W like that though against the Phils, don’t recall a Met doing it since Wiggy a few years back… Good win nonetheless.
This was a great game to watch. Living in Pa, I have to listen to the boring Phily commentators. Nevertheless, was a game by Pagan. This guy along with “taking them to Church” are growing into players I want to see play everyday. I will also give credit to Willie. I am not the biggest fan of his, but he is sticking with what he said, having roles in the bullpen. He put Heilman in the 8th despite Howard being up. Wagner complained last season about the bullpen not having roles. Now they have them, and Heilman needs to prove he belongs there. Overall, great win now lets win the series against the brewers.
I agree 100% that it was fun to watch the Mets for the first time this year. I think it is pretty simple. When Reyes gets on base, it is a fun team to watch and it changes the game.
Let Jose be Jose!!
Great game! I also think Reyes was bareeellyyyyy safe but hey a win is a win. I loved to see S.S. come in and throw a HUGE double play ball for us and hopefully now he’ll build on this. Heilman is KILLING me but I think he’ll be fine be years end. It was also good to see Beltran react like that..shows that he wants it just as bad as us.
Angel Pagan..too early for MVP thoughts (JK..well sorta haha)
Lets Go Mets!
I loved seeing Beltran throw the bat down. I mean, it sucked that he struck out, but it was like, oh my god, there is some fight and life in this team??? They can show emotion!!!!!! :-)
I loved last nights game. All around just a battle and the Mets looked like they wanted it and played with some spunk, especially in the later innings. Definitely looked more like the 2006 team.
Keep it up boys.
Let’s Go Mets!!!
Whaddya mean, “bareeellyyyyy safe?” He was safe by almost two inches! ;)
Plus, and this can’t be discounted, he beat the throw to the plate. That right there sets up the “safe” call in the umpire’s mind.
I’m getting awfully frustrated with Heilman, is it time yet to start booing him and stop booing Show yet? Show manned up last night in a big way, as well as several other people, and it all had to happen because of Heilman. When are we gonna start booing him? I’m sick of this crap.
How about not booing anyone, unless they are wearing an opposing teams uniform.
seriously…jesus man
yes cause booing helps a players confidence…
ugh
well said! I never like it when fans boo the players from the team they are rooting for.
I agree with those who are ready to discuss Heilman.
I’ve been hoping he would be traded for about a year, when I had the sense that he might be overvalued. Though I expect he will return to form, that form is something less than a reliable setup guy. Feliciano should have the eighth inning now, at least until Heilman proves himself again. And this is not about the last two games either. Heilman has been quite inconsistent for the last year.
Nor do I see any reason to believe he would be more effective as a starter.
Feliciano like show is more of a situational guy. Heilman will be fine we are only 10 games in.
Besides we won the game, every bullpen pitcher is going to go through a rough patch at some point during the season. If we can continue to win games Heilman is shaky in, then we will be in great shape when he gets his act together.
I love the win. LOVE THE WIN! But I’m SICK of this crap.
I whole heartily agree on the trading of Heilman. If we could find someone that wants to start him and wants to trade us for him valued as a starter because they are nuts to do so, suckers! If we can find the right deal to sell high, so be it, but he sure isn’t helping the cause right now, and he’s doing his best to lose the 8th inning which he apparently doesn’t deserve. Smith is looking really nice though. He’s burning through his first innings like they are nothing!
Now THAT was a game! That was a legit, fun to watch game. Too bad Maine couldn’t get the W … Heilman is frustrating to watch right now, but I think he’ll get it together. You’d still like to see the Mets offense do more, but Church with the nice, clutch, 2 out hit to drive in two runners in scoring position … Pagan continuing to impress … it’s good to see. On Pagan, I have 6 words:
Angel Pagan In The Two Hole!! …. very nice.
I love how the pen came through last night (Heilman aside). I love how Show was used last night (correctly). THAT is how you use Show! That should be his defined role. He’ll be an effective pitcher if he’s used the right way. He got some BIG outs last night. Good job Willie … Now stick to the plan, man.
Nice win boys, tell the Phils to go stick it. … for now. :)
Heilman always struggles against the Phillies. I think he has an ERA around 7 or 8 against them.
Hopefully the win will get him off the hook a little bit, mentally.
Baseball’s a game of failure. Every player goes through rough streaks. Remember Rivera blowing three saves in a row last year?
Heilman’s always been a little streaky, and he’s currently on a bad one. But his bad streaks have always been shorter than his good ones.
That’s why it’s not time to discuss him.
That and the fact that we won a tough, close game against the Phillies last night. Let’s talk about the win. Let’s talk about the two-out hitting to get the win. Let’s talk about Jose flashing his million-dollar smile. Let’s talk about being 1 game up on the Phillies and 1.5 up on the Braves despite not really having everything together yet. Let’s talk about a good bounceback performance from Maine after his less-than-stellar first outing. Why talk about the negative when there’s so much positive?
P.S. good luck Philly against the Cubs with that worn-out bullpen muahaha I hope Myers gets lit up again.
Well said. Couldn’t agree more. The guy is off to a rough start. He will be fine. The point is, that was a close, hard-fought game that we beat against the Phillies. Rather than focus on the bad of last night, Hielman, let’s focus on the fact that we just took 2 out of 3 from the Phillies. SUCK ON THAT PHILLY
Let’s Go Mets
Can we stop talking about Heilman as a starter now? He’s got 2 pitches, a fastball and changeup, absolutely no solid breaking pitch. That’s not gonna get it done when your going through a lineup 2-3 times. He should work on getting 3 guys out before he thinks about trying to get 18-21 guys out.
I want to keep talking about it in hopes that it convinces another team that he can be and will take him for a reliable reliever.
If another team wants him as a starter, then fine. I just dont understand this constant rumbling that all around the league people see him as a valuable starter. If that were true, the Mets would be getting offers for him constantly and you’d think they’d jump on one.
I just dont see it. I’m not a pro scout, but I know baseball well. I know you need more than an average fastball and an above average change to become a starter. Heilman has no breaking ball. None.
But I’ll agree, if teams want him as a starter, see value in him. Stretch him out, get his innings up (in AAA) then ship him out for some valuable relievers.
He has thrown a nasty slider in the past. If he threw it more, maybe he’d be able to be considered for a starter’s slot somewhere.
Where’s C Dubb now? The guy responds to my comment yesterday about just how unimpressive Heilman is by quoting his ERA and WHIP from last season. Stats don’t tell the whole story. Heilman blows leads. He gives up bombs with that pathetic changeup.
He needs some serious help, and the guy is flat out nuts if he thinks he’s got starter stuff.
If Heilman can’t get out Howard, he has no business in the 8th inning. Phillies fans are so quiet…
wow .. what a game .. cerrone hit it right on the spot about this team finally looking like getting some life back in them … i also miss seeing this team win and have fun doin it …
my only problem is .. i wonder what the hell are they gona do when alou comes back … i really dont think its right if they sit angel when he has been the biggest offensive contributer this season.. and if pedro comes back and avoids getting injured and wins at least 13 games this team will be in realllllllllly good shape and will have a really good chance in the playoffs
