The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

LHP Johan Santana (1-1, 1.93 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets in his Shea Stadium debut. The Notes:

The Mets are batting .227 (46-for-203) vs. right-handed pitchers this season.

  1. I have mlb extra inning , but i dont hink it will be on ..and i am not gettin an Mlb online acct to watch..anyone know what i can do?? I really wanna watch the game!! Or listen …..someone have an idea??? ohhh and LETS GO METS!!

    • dcmetsfan says:

anyone know what i can do?? I really wanna watch the game!!

      Move to New York?

Just kidding. I am in the same boat as you. I am so happy that I get to spend $160 for the Extra Innings package only to essentially have 1/7 of the games blacked out. (BTW, they’re blacked out on the MLB.tv package as well, you can only listen over the internet).

      • MetsFanInVegas says:

Yup I’m just like you guys, not getting to watch the game because the MLB Extra Innings package doesn’t have this game or any game for that matter, first game they start showing are the ones that start at 4ET/1PT, it’s like this every Saturday for me. So disappointed I can’t watch Johan’s first start at Shea!

        • MetsFanInVegas says:

          *I mean 7ET/4PT

        • metsdude13 says:

Actually, for some reason this year the MLB.TV games are not blacked out. Even last weeks game on FOX was available on MLB.TV (I’m in the Detroit area so I got that game on TV)

        • gipper91375 says:

Yes, for some reason, the online feed is not blacked out – odd. I just bite the bullet every year and subscribe to both Extra Innings and the MLB.tv services. If all video is blacked out, I listen via the mlb.audio.

        • itsmetsforme says:

guys when will it be time for us to band together and let the MLB know how we feel about this ripoff??? People sound pretty angry.

i got the last saturday game on wfan somehow, but its random. now i’ve got a couple a monkeys talking about Marriah Carrey.

        • D.J. Short says:

Saturday afternoon games (1pm-7pm) on MLB.tv will be blacked out beginning next Saturday, the 19th. But for now, enjoy.

        • Mets Fan in Logan Circle says:

I’d love to band together and do something about this. This is utterly freaking ridiculous. $160 for this jazz?

        • m00kie says:

if you’re blacked out, you can use a proxy server from another country, and you’ll get the game. Today, however mine wasn’t blacked out, though it has been in years prior on the saturday 1pm games.

        • christian warrior says:

You could just get XM. You never have to worry about missing anything.

Personally, I like listening to radio broadcasts better anyway.

        • itsmetsforme says:

i know you’re just trying to help CW and others, but my anger is at this $159 extra innings cable package i ponied up for that is anything but extra innings. I am not paying for mlbtv this year (in addition) because my heart cant take the stress when I cant get key games on there either.
So I could listen to the radio, and I could hitch up the buggie for a ride to the store too, but…I’d prefer to see the MLB treat their hardcore customers with some respect for once. How many times should we have to pay for the same content?

    • A7Xrhcp57 says:

if you go on wfan.com you can listen to the game

  2. jws366 says:

All I know is that this umpire calls a lot of low strikes so Johan should have a monster day today. Lets go Mets!

  3. TheKidFromJersey says:

According to MLB.com lineups, the Brew Crew have sheets batting 8th and Kendall 9th. The Larussa lineup.

    • christian warrior says:

They did the same thing in the game last night.

    • metsmets17 says:

I am NOT a fan of this strategy. Overmanaging, micromanaging and anything else you want to call it. It could mean waiting until the third inning for the 9th (league leading) hitter to come to bat.

      • dcmetsfan says:

I agreed with Cohen and Darling when they noted that at least Yost has a better argument for doing it than LaRussa. essentially, they figure Kendall is a slow running, high OBP guy who will rarely come up with a runner on first if he bats 9th. It sort of makes sense. I don’t know if I’d do it, but it sure makes more sense than LaRussa’s argument for doing it.

        • christian warrior says:

With Kendall hitting the way he has been, it puts an extra hitter in between the pitcher and Prince Fielder, who is hitting in the #3 hole.

  4. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Let’s go Mets to you and yours…

One thing, though… everyone has been offering reflections on the Heilman 8th from Thursday night.

Has anyone– admittedly, haven’t slogged through all comments– brought up the fact that– with Howard and Jenkins due up– Willie could have used Wagner there? (With Heilman or Smith coming out for the save?)

Heilman has JUST been banged up against the same segment of the lineup two days earlier… and he’s tended to get torn up by said segment for the last 2-3 years.

(Mind you, I don’t think Randolph would ever do this, but still…)

    • irish_eagle says:

I didn’t mention it because people don’t think that way any more, but I had the same thought. The “closer” mentality doesn’t allow that kind of thinking nowadays, but in the old days you’d have brought in your best (Orosco) or leftie (Orosco) in that situation. You’d have your second best (McDowell) finish up, if necessary or your best would have pitched the 9th if he felt strong enough.

      • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

‘86 Mets pen-as-analogue works well (hell, I think I remember Sisk finishing a few that year).

Even better… think “Nasty Boys.” Myers was the nominal closer, but Charlton and Dibble were in something like a combined 40 percent of the time to close out.

  5. A7Xrhcp57 says:

thank god luis castillo is back in there.
Hey Matt, how do you know the lineups prior to the game? Just curious

  6. metsmets17 says:

It’s good to see Castillo back in the lineup. He’s been getting a lot of flack; however, he’s an intelligent player who gives our infield a great advantage. He will miss an occasional game or games. That just keeps our bench guys fresh with occasional playing time. A glass half-full perspective.

    Can’t wait until first pitch.

  7. metsmets17 says:

No Keith again today. Maybe he’s shopping for some more tootsie pops. Get ready for some Kiner on today’s broadcast.

  8. metsmets17 says:

Mets are back in pinstripes. Can you say FINALLY!?

  9. cohen1333 says:

Let’s go mets!!! Pray for negative results on Jose’s MRI.

  10. jws366 says:

Does anyone else find it kind of depressing that they have a countdown until they tear down Shea?

    • metsmets17 says:

I agree…..Im not sold on Citi Field yet. It’s like your wife selling your old recliner.

    • MudvilleNine says:

Well they were talking about who should take down number 12. Darling, or Stearn, or another Met # 12 they didnt remember. I wrote in on ask the booth that it should be the Hall of Famer who wore # 12 playing in Shea. Broadway Joe Namath. What do you guys think?

      • irish_eagle says:

I think it has to be a Met. I’m not a Jet fan, but I guess there should be some acknowledgment that they did play there once.

        • MudvilleNine says:

Well I kind of think that it’s about Shea and not so much about the Mets though they have been the chief tenant. The one famous Jet should be included. Especially if they end up using celebrities to take down numbers that didnt match to famous players.

  11. HOFMets57 says:

Man. I haven’t seen Santana hit 92 mph YET. Is it the cold weather? Or maybe that his arm hasn’t stretched out completely?

I saw him pitch a couple times last year at, or above 94 mph.

    Anyone else concerned?

    • metsmets17 says:

Perfectly normal. Dont forget Willie has been easy on Johan’s pitch count and has given him extra days off. He’ll get there.

    • darkstar73 says:

i’d be concerned if he couldn’t get hitters out, but he’s been able to do that.

      • HOFMets57 says:

That’s what happens to 91 mph fastballs. They get HIT (Weeks, Kapler).

Johan needs to dial it up back to mid 90s…

  12. jznole says:

FYI – I’m watching on MLB.tv using a friends login info. See! Not all Braves fans are bad! sucks that its not on Xtra Innings though! Doesn’t make a lot of sense.

  13. metsmets17 says:

Schneider has a new catchers mask. It must make for a better target for the pitchers…lol

  14. Jersey Shore Mets says:

Although it stinks that Saturday pre-4:00 games are still blacked out on Extra Innings on TV, it is good that they are making progress on the blackout BS by at least making it available on MLB.tv. Although they are FAR from perfecting the rules, at least it’s a much-needed start that is a long time coming.

  15. gipper91375 says:

Gotta love Delgado’s surprisingly good start to the year.

    • rockets212 says:

without a doubt if he wasnt playin well i dont know how bad this offense would be doing now

    • JefJarrett says:

I agree! He has been going the other way and up the middle more, and hitting the ball with authority at times. He has been getting a ton of crap from people, but I’m optimistic that he is making the adjustments he needed to.

    • irish_eagle says:

Absolutely. I’d given up on the guy, to be honest.

    • Darkhorse19 says:

I’ll tell you what you dont gotta love….Luis Castillo. If he didn’t get the pass ball last inning, thats a double play and Wright fles out for the 3rd out.

Castillo is SO bad. Did you expect anything more from him than a 2mph roller to short? I’m convinced he is incapable of hitting a ball out of the infield.

      • stumped1 says:

but he did get the passed ball and he did get the runner over. but im sure hes sorry he didnt get it done in a matter that suited you.

        • Darkhorse19 says:

Castillo is terrible, and I can’t wait for him to rally kill this team all year in that 2 hole, just so you will shut up.

        • JefJarrett says:

Wow, thats the spirit. Just because hes not batting where you would like him to, is no reason to route against the guy. He is right around a .300 career hitter, does all the little things when hes at the plate, and plays excellent defense…..he’s fine…….hardly “terrible”.

        • JefJarrett says:

          *root

  16. ccmetfan says:

I truly think everyone has forgotten their woes from last year and are going to play great

    • Darkhorse19 says:

Because of a 3 game win streak? LOL

5 days ago, Mets fans were ready to commit suicide. Settle down. Its just one game.

      • Jersey Shore Mets says:

Not all Mets fans were ready to commit suicide. Some of us were laughing at how many other fans have already given up on the season 5% of the way through…haha.

      • stumped1 says:

is this any different that judging castillo, a career 300 hitter, by what hes done in a handful of games this year.

  17. gipper91375 says:

So, Santana’s supposed to be a good fielder?

    • jimyager says:

Hey Santana has pitched 3 games and lost….2 of them!!!! Thats not a good investment. How many HRs has he given up? How may did Heilman give up? HMMMMMMM .. I wonder? Fact is we are a good team, not a great team. We can win if we get lucky. We are not consistant enough to win, yet. Perhaps in a month or 2.

  18. wolverine194 says:

Next to all of Derek Jeter’s and that one year that Palmiero won when he played around 30 games at 1st, David Wright’s gold glove last year was the biggest mockery of the award I have seen.

    • Wright88 says:

Even though I love him, I completely agree. The gold glove award is a complete popularity contest. Look how many times Andruw won it, after he stopped being good defensively. Its a joke

      • christian warrior says:

When was it, exactly, that Andruw Jones ceased being good defensively?

        • Wright88 says:

If you look at some of the real defensive stats the last couple of years, he is ranked at the bottom of his position. Just like Jeter.

    • MudvilleNine says:

He just cant stay on top of the ball everytime and when he doesnt the ball just sails on him.

      • gipper91375 says:

Yup. David’s my favorite Met…but not a gold glover. Not as bad as some make him out to be…but not a gold glover.

A very good hitter? Yes. Plays the game the right way? Yes. A classy guy? Yes…..but not a gold glover.

        • el_giacomo says:

I think in a few years, we could call him a bona-fide Gold Glover. I see a lot of potential in David’s defense. Heck, take it literally and I’d say he IS a Gold Glover. It’s just that his arm is Bronze at best…

        • gipper91375 says:

          LOL…good point.

    • Benny Blanco from da Bronx says:

There’s also the Bobby Abreu one

  19. Pizza Man says:

Pagan has been a pleasant surprise. I feel alot more confident with our outfield depth when Alou comes back, but for now Pagan’s defense and speed have been a nice addition.

  20. NYCESQ says:

Santana comes to bat to Santana. Awesome.

  21. gipper91375 says:

A whole lot of pitches get past Schneider for a “defensive catcher”.

  22. MetsUKfan says:

santana has speeded up – dialed in now.

  23. Darryl Strawberry says:

Wright’s throwing has been a major problem for this team the past few seasons. No one wants to make a big deal out of it, but they need to start. Also it would be nice if the Mets could hit a home run every so often. Now Sheets is dialed in and we are in trouble.

  24. domosnacks5 says:

Just read that post 2 posts down by Matt. It’s a darn shame the bandwagon jumping fans are really ruining this site. Hopefully Matt can just start banning some IP addresses. As he has said, reading through 900 posts a game is absurd to me. Clearly not the same as it has been the past few years I’ve been reading, evident of the bandwagon jumping and Phillies trolls that have been hijacking the site. If it came down to Matt charging 5 bucks a year to keep the trolls out, I’d do it.

  25. domosnacks5 says:

And also, the Brewers seem to be having no trouble with this “wind tunnel”… Really gotta get our power going.

    • MetsUKfan says:

I dunno if the hitters get a bit complacent when johan is on the mound?

Sheets is good but they seem to have lost the patience they had the first time round.

  26. gipper91375 says:

Ugh. I guess Johan is human.

  27. Darryl Strawberry says:

    Our offense better do something.

  28. beltransmole says:

    Santana sucks, Trade him!

  29. Darryl Strawberry says:

Santana vs. Smoltz=loss Santana vs. Sheets=loss.

    • wolverine194 says:

I’m not blaming Santana, the defense behind him has been horrible and throw in some classic unclutch Met hitting, it’s a miracle the game is as close as it is.

      • Gina says:

I think his point is our bats aren’t showing up when Santana pitches against other top pitchers. I could be wrong though.

    • christian warrior says:

      I’m just curious…

How did you get to be so insightful?

  30. jws366 says:

I just read somewhere that Alou is set to come back in late april/early may…If Pagan keeps playing like he has been can we really put him on the bench?

    • wolverine194 says:

You honestly think Willie will play a young player over a veteran?

    • MudvilleNine says:

Well if he’s coming back in 2 or 3 weeks, maybe they should just release Clark now and bring up AHern or A Reyes to play and backup SS and 2B until Alou returns. With Pagan’s play they haven’t had to use Clark that much. They need the defensive IF backup more.

      • wolverine194 says:

If they release Clark now, after giving up Gotay for him, a lot of Mets fans will be pissed

        • MudvilleNine says:

True, but he is the one most likely gone when Alou returns so why wait? They hurt defensively at SS when Reyes isnt in and as I’ve stated before, Easley is ok for one day or two, but now he’s been in a few days for Castillo and now he’s still in for Reyes. He just cant handle it anymore on a daily basis. If you remember I was always talking up Gotay, but I wouldn’t say word one about how they should have kept him now, I understood why he had to go. But this is what I feared and warned about a while ago, the possibility of Reyes going down for several days that didnt need a trip to the DL. I know some fans would be pissed but they would have to agree that they need the defensive backup IF more than an unused 6th OF.

        • christian warrior says:

          What does that even mean?

The Mets didn’t let Gotay go for no reason. If they needed the IF depth so bad, he’d still be here.

So many people make releasing Gotay sound like giving up on A-Rod or something.

          Relax. Nobody should be pissed.

        • MudvilleNine says:

CW – I hope you werent thinking that I was saying we should have kept Gotay for IF depth. As I said I knew why they released him and understood it, and no one knew that Pagan was going to play like he has been so I understood keeping Clark as a potential platoon man. But the chances of Castillo or Reyes going down for a few days were still there, and Easley is only good for a day here and a day there to give them some rest. The need for a true backup is there, especially now. Clark has batted what? Maybe 3 times so far in 10 games? Pagan’s play has earned him the right to stay when Alou comes back which means Clark is the odd man out. Since this will likely happen in the next 2 or 3 weeks and Reyes and Castillo are hurting, I think it would be prudent to release Clark now and bring up Hernandez or A. Reyes just in case. When Alou returns you just send them down. You cant tell me you didnt feel a little trepidation Friday night when you saw Easley at SS and Marlon Anderson at second. Kind of gave me the “willies”.

  31. Darryl Strawberry says:

This offense has had way too many opportunities this year to break games open early and has failed constantly. We need someone to hit a three run home run in one of these games. Too many singles.

  32. beltransmole says:

We are definitely missing Reyes’ defense today. That was ridiculous.

  33. NelsonFigueroa says:

the game is still in reach… its too bad our defense hasnt been up to par.

as for matt and his desire to block commenters, keep in mind that this is a new york market. can you imagine the dynamic of wfan if mike and the mad dog blocked out all negative callers? and on the flip side, should we block overly optimistic comments? unless posters are making racist, sexist, or explicitly vicious comments, they should be allowed to post. having said that, its your site matt (assumign you read this) and you can do whatever you like.

    • christian warrior says:

Negative callers? If WFAN were that concerned with negativity on their station they would block Mike and the Mad Dog from hitting the air.

  34. wolverine194 says:

Willie would never do it, but he should bat Castillo leadoff from now on, because he has absolutely no pop. The guy is just a black hole in that two spot. Let him work counts leading off. He takes pitches and Reyes doesn’t.

  35. ccmetfan says:

Santana is a great pitcher who can pitch long in a game but when you pitch him against another ace, it will be difficult for him to win games. The Mets offense hasn’t yet hit hard other quality pitchers.

  36. wolverine194 says:

un freaking believable, welcome to the Mets Santana

  37. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

    And there’s that defense again.

(And, actually, Nelson… Mike and the Mad Dog DO block out the overwhelming majority of callers. It’s called call screening, and it’s the producer’s primary on-air job.)

  38. NelsonFigueroa says:

    oh no.

we need not get complacent just because johan is on the mound. lets treat the game as if brian lawrence is pitching! lets go offense, lets go defense!

  39. almar1965 says:

Looks like Wright’s having a gold glove day today.

Another argument as to why the Gold Glove nowadays is overrated.

    • wolverine194 says:

It’s the Pro Bowl of the MLB

    • MetsUKfan says:

i think his hitting woes are effecting his defence..

      probably worries too much.

      • almar1965 says:

Last year he had an MVP caliber year, yet he still had a ton of errors (even if they were mostly throwing errors).

It has nothing to do with his hitting, he just basically thinks too much when he makes a routine play. Don’t know how he can resolve that if he has not done so already in his career.

  40. NelsonFigueroa says:

    thats that arm

  41. wolverine194 says:

When the Mets get outbid for Teixeira in the off-season by the Yanks(and they will) they should seriously consider moving Wright to 1st. Relying on reaction and not having to make long throws, I could see Wright doing very well there.

  42. NelsonFigueroa says:

and then we can get brandon inge… francesa likes him

  43. almar1965 says:

These are not tough plays, basically his usual calling card, throwing errors, along with a grounder he should have had played for an out.

    • almar1965 says:

…his throwing errors being his calling card, not his fielding grounders. Just wanted to clarify that.

  44. almar1965 says:

Once again, Johan should not be put in a position to lose this game, which is why it is imperative the Mets score against a pitcher that they have owned (according to Sheets lifetime ERA against them).

All the talk of Santana winning 20 games was premature, since the offense and bullpen factors into a pitcher winning that much nowadays.

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

The thing is, the offense needs to score more than 2 runs, but Santana’s penchant for the long ball, coupled with his poor fielding of the bunt for the Brewer’s first run is the reason we’re down in this game. Sheets is off to a hot start and is a great pitcher, so his lifetime stats against us are irrlevant in my opinion. If we lose this game it’s because Santana just didn’t have his A game today. It’s not a knock on him, but it happens and I don’t think it’s reflective of what’s ailing the rest of the team.

      • almar1965 says:

Actually I would argue that Easley not handling that ball in the first inning that Reyes would have gotten, combined with Wright’s first error is the reason. But as I speak, Kapler hits a 2-run bomb. The game may as well be 10-1 with this AAA offense right now.

  45. Darryl Strawberry says:

3 homeruns in 10 games, really impressive Mets.

  46. almar1965 says:

Mets offense being put to sleep by Sheets, and the Mets offense putting the fans to sleep.

  47. wolverine194 says:

When was the last time the Mets actually won a pitching “showdown” between two great pitchers? Last time I can think of was Pedro vs Smoltz in ‘05.

  48. jws366 says:

We also have an issue when Ben Sheets is only throwing 14 pitches per inning against us…

    • almar1965 says:

The Mets have not been known as a patient team at the plate since their 1999 season which in my opinion still ranks as one of the most efficient offensive teams in their history (they were among the tops in OBP and pitchers per AB).

I would take a team like that over this team in a heartbeat.

      But that’s an obvious statement.

  49. gipper91375 says:

Somebody make a sacrifice to Jobu – for these bats, they sleep.

  50. Mets Fan in Logan Circle says:

I just ran home from and I can’t get Extra Innings, and I’m getting nothing from WFAN. What gives? Someone in a post above mentioned the radio, but nothing’s on!

  51. wolverine194 says:

Anyone want to bet who’ll be the next Met to make an out in a crucial spot? I’ll say Beltran.

  52. nychurch111 says:

predictable mets….this offense is overrated. they score in bunches, not consistently like good offenses do. where r the extra base hits? santana should not be in this position to lose another game because mr.wright is allergic to throw to delgado’s glove.

i said it in ST, this pitching staff is going to have to pitch out of their mind the whole year, because the O is not that good. and its happening already.

  53. Constnza81V2.0 says:

Like I said. Santana is just not that good today. It happens. But this loss is on him.

And did I just hear boos for Santana? Unbelieveable!

    • almar1965 says:

In fairness, Santana would have had to pitch a shutout for the Mets to win. In fact it seems like he will have to pitch a shutout in every game with the no-show offense.

    • darkstar73 says:

wow, really? boos? well I guess it’s almost expected at this point.

    • mymetsrock says:

i can’t believe they were booing johan santana, in his first start at shea.

mets fans have now officially become yankees fans.

      no excuse.

    • letsgomets942 says:

A bad day is a bad day that’s fine. Its probably nothing and he will be fine next time out but, he did not top 90MPH today! That makes me a little worried. Just because how it seems that every one on the team is bound to get hurt at some point this season.

    • MudvilleNine says:

Realize this, he was held back a day by Willie in order to pitch him against the Phillies next week. This would be 2 straight games where he’s given up homers because, as I believe, he’s had to much rest and as such, he is unable to be sharp. He’s the guy that needs to be throwing every 5th day. Hopefully this giving him an extra days rest experiment is over.

  54. gipper91375 says:

Hmmm. Not getting the most out of our investment in Johan today.

    • almar1965 says:

No biggie. Did we all expect him to win 25 games with a 1.00 ERA?

If anyone did, then they need to cut back on the meds.

  55. A7Xrhcp57 says:

now this game is over….i knew that was coming

  56. ccmetfan says:

It’s only one bad outing,he shouldnt be booed
At least he hasn’t been like Zito

    • gipper91375 says:

The boos were widly scattered – and some cheers. You don;t usually hear cheers for a guy who gave up 3 HRs. No biggie. The boos are silly though.

  57. MetsFanInVegas says:

Santana can’t be perfect every outing. He’ll get ‘em next time and hopefully our offense puts more runs up on the board to help him.

  58. Darkhorse19 says:

boooooooooo Santana. This guys gives up HR’s like its his job.

    Atlanta loss on the offense.

This one on Santana. Only win is vs Florida….not sayin much.

    • MainStMets says:

love johan, but the homers could be dangerous

    • almar1965 says:

Santana gave up the most HRS in the AL last year, and he has been known to give up a lot of HRs during his CY Young years.

So don’t react like this is a surprise.

I would still take him on the staff as the Ace and one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball.

  59. mikeymetsfan says:

they r booing johan…wow…met fans should be embarresed

  60. almar1965 says:

Anyone who booed Santana for his first subpar outing, which should not have been as bad as it was (due to errors and weal bats) should have their Mets fan privileges revoked. I mean really.

    • jws366 says:

Personally I feel like no mets player should ever be boo’ed. Even Schoenweiss…

      • mikeymetsfan says:

agreed….but people do bad consistently they should get booed. there was no reason to boo showenweis for the phillies game..it was a routine play for delgado

        • christian warrior says:

Delgado should have walked to the mound and knocked Showenweiss’ head off for the way he reacted to that play, btw…

  61. darkstar73 says:

well, Santana’s bad game is 5 runs through almost 7, its obviously not good, but when you think about it, if this is his bad game, that’s really not horrible.

  62. Darryl Strawberry says:

You can’t blame people for booing. They are excited to see him pitch, spent hundreds of dollars today and saw a terrible game.

    • almar1965 says:

I this situation I can blame fans for booing him. It’s not like Santana has had several games like this in a row. Why not direct the booing where it should be directed, at the Mets bats and Wrights continuing penchant for throwing the ball anywhere but the first baseman’s glove.

    • letsgomets942 says:

Give me a break. I sorry but, everybody just needs to calm down and stop booing these guys unless their is really a reason, like for Show!

  63. erik says:

Anyone remember that Santana is a notoriously slow starter and that him and Schnieder are still working on gelling together?

  64. NelsonFigueroa says:

the last home run was fatigue-induced. had wright not made those 2 errors and easley made a play on that grounder, its 2-2 going and johan goes 7 deep.

  65. mikeymetsfan says:

the offense should get way more runs. is hojo still the hitting coach?

    • christian warrior says:

Yes he is. And I loved HoJo, he was always my favorite player.

But I have always found it funny that the Mets would employ a hitting coach who could never figure out how to hit anything other than a middle-in fastball during his playing days.

  66. NelsonFigueroa says:

i also want to see these guys get sheets pitch count up, so even if they go down 1-2-3, which is possible given the way hes cruising along, we can see middle relief and gagne in the 8th and 9th.

at the end of the day, we had our opportunities to score runs. bases loaded with wright up, you cant settle for a weak ground ball.

    • christian warrior says:

That is precisely the reason that Willie made it a point to have Castillo in the lineup today.

  67. MetsFanInVegas says:

I know the offense should be getting more runs but I rather be shut down and score 2 runs against an ace like Sheets rather than somebody you know we should definitely be scoring against.

    • almar1965 says:

Except that if this team, is going to contend for any championship, they need to be able to manufacture runs against pitchers who are having their way with them. Whether they are top pitchers or mediocre ones.

Nothing so far this season has me convinced yet that they can manufacture runs consistently when needed. Yes it is early and they may get in the groove, but so far I can only comment on what we see on the field.

  68. moe.ron says:

    ZzzzzZZzzzzz. the offense sleeps again.

  69. gipper91375 says:

Should we just begin to expect this team to be no more than a .500 club? I mean, it dates back to May of last year. Perhaps we just need to lower expectations?

    • darkstar73 says:

who makes the expectations? what use are they anyway? why blindly follow those expectations anyway? A team is what it is, you follow them, and you see how they do. What happens, happens. Having said that, this is still a good team, its like one game to the next with some of the posters around here. We’re done one game and back the next. Just let the season play out, enjoy baseball.

      • gipper91375 says:

I wish I could be as sanguine as you, but as we enter our third decade without a championship….and as we are supposedly fielding a high-payroll, enormously talented team that ought to be far better than .500, yet appears not to be in reality…it gets frustrating.

Part of being a “fan” – short for fanatic, after all, is not being able to just take a sit back and have an “enjoy the games, win or lose” attitude.

        • darkstar73 says:

didn’t say I enjoy losing, our team is good, its early, patience is a virtue that helps a lot in baseball, and it surprised me more fans don’t realize that when you see consistently year after year teams turning their seasons around. Even saying that, we’re hardly at a point where we need to “turn our season around.”

        • gipper91375 says:

Fair rnough….it’s not just this season that is troubling – it dates back to last May. But, granted, it’s a long way to go.

  70. ac75 says:

I can’t believe I heard boos as Santana walked off the field. They guy obviously dodn’t have his A game and still left only 3 runs down…..this is what you expect from your Ace…to be kept in games when you don’t have it. this booing is becoming more embarrasing by the day

    • metsintx says:

Exactly.. how do you boo your ace, let alone your team, at home. I guess the true fans arent at the game.

      • gipper91375 says:

Look, I agree the booing Johan is silly given his excellent first two starts and that he is the ace….but no true Mets fan boo their own team? Really? So the three decades I have seen at Shea were aberrations filled with fake fans yelling “Sisk sucks!” and booing guys as great as Seaver, Ryan, Gooden, etc?

        • metsintx says:

I have been to a few Mets games at different cities and they dont boo their own players when they do poorly. it makes the fans look like idiots.

        • almar1965 says:

Fans can boo whomever they want. But there is justified booing (players not hustling, stupid bone-headed plays, overall suckitude over a prolonged period, a hated opponent) and unreasonable booing like booing Johan today.

        • gipper91375 says:

I agree with Metsintx….I have gone to Mets games in Seattle, San Diegom, Arizona – and the home team fans are comatose – the NY visiting fans are the only noise.

        • gipper91375 says:

Oh, wait – I guess I disagree with Metsintx…..I thought you meant the fans in other cities who lack passion look like idiots, not the passionate Mets fans.

        • metsintx says:

Booing your home town players is not passion, unless, your right, they are dogging it, and the only person I saw dogging it between last year and this year, was Reyes.
Shoe just sucked in the first half of last year.
Heilman has always been bad( homer in the NLCS, not that great last year, and bad this year so far). not sure how he wants to be a starter.
When I was at last Sunday’s game in ATL, they were anything but passsionless. they only booed the mets.

      • Wright88 says:

I wonder why our team did poorly at home last year…hmmmm

        • gipper91375 says:

And why did they do so well the season before? There is no way it affects the team – and if it does, they have far greater issues to deal with.

Plenty of NY teams play well at home, despite the severity of the respective fanbases.

        • metsintx says:

I agree, I dont think the players care, except when it comes to contract time if they continue want to deal with ignorant fans that boo one day then cheer the next(see Shoe on Thursday).

        • gipper91375 says:

You see ignorance, I see passion. And, frankly, a tradition in NYC, the best, most passionate baseball fanbase there is.

I’ve seen games in other cities (SD, Seattle, AZ, elsewhere) and it’s like being at a golf tournament. The only noise comes from the visiting Mets fans.

  71. Wright88 says:

    Fire Rick Down…..I mean HoJo

    • almar1965 says:

Actually Rick Downs (who was Willie’s boy) is having the last laugh. When Downs was the batting coach in 2006, they offense clicked like we had not seen since 1999. Since HoJo, they have been lethargic, including Reyes’ regression.

Wasn’t it true that Reyes’ excelled under the tutelage of Down as oppsoed to Hojo?

      Coincidence?

      • Wright88 says:

Yea, my point is people overreact and blame the hitting coach for a team’s offensive struggles. Like changing a hitting coach will magically make the offense click.

  72. NelsonFigueroa says:

we are manufacturing runs. we just need an occassional long ball. beltran, wright, and delgado have given us a combined 3 home runs through 11 games, and that isnt going to cut it. bear in mind, jose has started off slow, and i expect him to get on base with greater frequency when he returns. alou will be back soon enough, and the guy can rake. lets not get over-excited though. spirits were high after figueroas gem yesterday, and though we may lose this game (its not over yet guys), our goal should be to win every series. its unrealistic to win every single game, but if we go out there trying to win 2 out of 3, we’ll be in good shape.

  73. mikeymetsfan says:

hows anderson hernandez hitting in the minors?castillo suks right now

  74. Darkhorse19 says:

Luis Castillo is ruining this team. There are tee ball players than can hit the bar further than him. Move him to the 8 spot or get rid of him and eat the money.

    RUBEY GOTAY.

    • NelsonFigueroa says:

we saw what happens when the defense behind our pitchers isnt there. sure, ruben might be able to hit here and there, but hes a defensive liability. castillo is not spectacular, but hes a crafty contact guy who plays superb defense.

i do agree though that the 4 year extension was totally unwarranted. lets go mets!

      • almar1965 says:

“but hes a crafty contact guy who plays superb defense.”

A “crafty contact” guy, whom has no power whatsoever beyond the infield.

Do overrate his defense. With his knees shot, his range and speed is compromised. He is still above average at 2nd base, but superb is not the label I would use.

  75. NelsonFigueroa says:

haha, make that 4 home runs between the three.

  76. almar1965 says:

True, but I do believe that sometimes hitting coaches have an overall positive effect on a particular young player. I believe (and it has been noted in the media) that Reyes’ and Downs had a great relationship and it is far-fetched to believe that his departure may have been one of the main contributing factors as to why Reyes has regressed? I am not saying that is the only reason or even the definitive reason, but it could be a major one.

  77. ccmetfan says:

    AWW,it’s not Mota Time

  78. mikeymetsfan says:

lets go delgado!!!get a big hit here

  79. ac75 says:

off topic, but why have mets fans been tortured with different versions of Franco for the past 20 years….first Johhny, then Julio, now Guissepe. Sorry , I had to vent.

    BRING IN MOTA

  80. mikeymetsfan says:

on the mlb gamezone thing..it says there is an injury delay? who gt hurt?

  81. rogasm says:

    How does Muniz look?

  82. ccmetfan says:

Muniz is pitching pretty well so far

  83. ccmetfan says:

Time for a Gagne melt down

  84. ccmetfan says:

    Ollie tomorrow

  85. mikeymetsfan says:

    wow..wat a bad game

    • darkstar73 says:

agreed, whenever you lose 5-3 you know you’re in big trouble for the rest of the season. 5-3, I mean, wow, can a team lose any worse then that?

  86. miker94 says:

so basically santana has done nothing for this team except save the bullpen some innings. that’s great and all, considering last year we were into the pen after the 4th or 5th inning every game. but other than that, he’s been decent, but not great. besides that, how horrible is castillo? the guy seems to have LOST power, not that he ever had any. he simply can’t get the ball past the mound, he’s just terrible! anyway, nice to see the fighting mets after the 2nd inning. pathetic…one hit from the 3rd to the 9th? wow! gonna be a long year people, get used to it.

    • almar1965 says:

When all is said and done, Santana will be his Cy Young self. I would not give any credibility to his slow start and judge him for it.

As far as Castillo, many Mets fans have said this time and time again, signing a 30+ 2nd baseman with chronic knee problems and no power to the OF from the right side was a HUGE mistake. There is no justification for signing him and letting Gotay go. Gotay’s defense could have been improved upon with hard work at his age. Castillo’s offense is what it will be, basically an over-the-hill, weak hitting .300 hitter with diminished speed. That’s all well and fine for the 7-8 spot in the lineup, but not batting 2nd. I say keep Pagan at the top of the order behind Reyes until he loses it on his own.

  87. metzelaar says:

Our 2009 starting first baseman….Daaaaaavid Wright!

Getting kind of tired of his defense, especially on the throws. And please don’t cite his gold glove. I think it’s pretty safe to say he didn’t deserve it.

    • metzelaar says:

Actually, I take the gold glove comment back. His glove isn’t the problem usually, just his arm. Arm and glove…if you don’t have one, there’s no use in having the other.

  88. metsfaninmd says:

Even last year with roughly the same team the offense did not seem to be that much of a problem. There was that game against Philly toward the end where we overcame a substantial deficit just to have the bullpen blow it. This year, so far, I find myself hoping for a lead and then hoping the game ends because this team seems incapable of putting together good innings without multiple errors going in their favor. God forbid the Mets get behind, you can kiss a game goodbye. Castillo and Reyes both look like steaming piles of garbage this year. Reyes I think will turn it around, he’s too good not to but Castillo is just awful. I’m not saying Gotay was the answer but neither is Castillo. 2006 clicked because, hate on him if you like but LoDuca did great in the number 2 spot, way better than Castillo. Of course 2006 was the last time Delgado put up Delgado numbers but…
Just realize that without Pagan and Church this team would be nowhere near 500 right now. Castillo must sit. and Jose, I don’t know maybe he just needs to start clapping more, that seems to work.

  89. gottabeliev4evr says:

    Let’s just take this series.

Hitting sure is anaemic, but we are bound for a bust out game soon. Better be tomorrow!

As much as I am disappointed the Mets don’t go for a nice, fat winning streak here, we’ve got to keep in mind that the Brewers play good ball.

Booing Santana…people are so stupid! Supposedly, he’s pretty slow out of the gate anyway; he should be the least of our worries.

  90. gipper91375 says:

    The former, not the latter.

  91. beltransmole says:

The last one went right through his 5-hole.
