New Orleans (AAA): 2-1 loss to Round Rock
RHP Joselo Diaz was fantastic, hurling seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five. RHP Ivan Maldonado took the loss, blowing the shut out and the save. RHP Duaner Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning.
It was a quiet night for Zephyr bats. 2B Argenis Reyes was 1-for-4 with a triple and the lone RBI; he drove in OF , who had a 2-for-3 evening with a double.
Binghamton (AA): 18-13 win over Erie
RHP Eric Brown was tagged for six runs, five earned, on nine hits in 4.1 innings. RHP Edgar Alfonzo earned a lucky win, having allowed 5 ER in 2.1 innings.
It was a huge night for the middle of the Binghamton order, who rotated playing three different positions. Nick Evans, starting at 1B before eventually being moved to LF, was 4-for-4 with a home run, six RBI, three runs scored and a walk. That raised his average to .452. Danny Murphy, at 1B before moving to 3B, finished 4-for-6 with a double and four runs scored to improve his average to .455 . Mike Carp, who began at LF and moved to 1B, was also 4-for-6 with a double. Carp scored three runs and drove in two, and his average now stands at .424.
St. Lucie (A+): 11-3 loss to Jupiter
RHP Nick Carr rebounded from a rough opening start to toss six innings of one run ball, surrendering five hits, just one walk and fanning six. 2007 draftee RHP Stephen Clyne had his first bad outing of the season, getting shelled for five earned runs on four hits and a walk without retiring a batter.
1B Lucas Duda got back into the swing of things with a 2-for-4 night, SS Ruben Tejada was 1-for-4, and OF Ezequiel Carrera finished with two hits in four at bats, including a double.
Savannah (A-): 8-3 loss to Columbia
RHP Elvin Ramirez picked up the loss, getting tagged for five runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks in just 2.2 innings on the mound.
OF Richard Pena went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, C Francisco Pena was 1-for-4 and scored a run, and 2B Greg Veloz finished 1-for-3 with a homer and 3 RBI.

Come on Duaner. Pitch another scoreless inning today.
And in my opinion, and as I answered in a survery months back. I would have no problem at all if only a select few were allowed to post. They wouldn’t have to be “positive” Met fans, but only fans who can both give and receive thoughtful criticism without the need to attack or offend.
Agree completely on the limited comments. The thoughtful comments are great, and the damaging comments hurt in a lot of ways. The only problem is that new/unestablished posters need to be scrutinized until they have earned Matt’s trust. Otherwise insurgents may find there way around the screen.
The only problem with having the newer or unestablished posters would determining who is new/unestablished and who is has been around for sometime and doesn’t post often, like me. On occassion I’ll toss in my two cents but overall I tend to read. Its just a sad situation that there are people out there full of such hate and anger.
Anyway, when and if Sanchez comes back I would imagine Muniz be sent back down. So what will happen to Wise?
Again, just my thoughts here, but for new and/or unestablished posters, they would have to “turn in an application” to Matt in order to be approved to post. You know, just an e-mail explaining their purpose and intent when they post and affirm that they will not be “racist, offensive, or angry”.
Once approved to post, Matt or any other Metsblog staff would be able to rescind the right to post to that individual.
Unless it also blocks IP addresses from posting, the current system of delaying posts from certain individuals doesn’t stop them from logging on under another name. Under the “Approval” system, that wouldn’t be a problem.
Good idea, but might as well start off with a clean slate and have everyone and anyone submit an “application” or an “agreement”. I would imagine it would be possible to block certain IP addresses, but I’m far from a techie. It would make it a much more enjoyable to rid the site of Yankee Like Met Fans!!!!!
i agree as well, i used to love reading the comments on this site almost as much as the content, but now sifting through all of the overreactions and anger is getting to be too much
As unpopular as this might be for some, I mentioned some time ago that it could help the discussion around here if metsblog was subscription-based. It woudln’t have to be outrageous, but like anything else, once someone has to pay for something, there less apt to abuse it. $10 a year or something become metsblog “members” who have the ability to contribute comments, post links/video etc. Meanwhile, the general news section would be free to everyone. Think of it like FARK without the rickrolling.
Either that, or Matt goes the deadspin route and hires an ombudsman and makes it very exclusive to post comments, which I think would remove the charm from this site, but would certainly chase away the trolls and extremists.
Those bad seeds are ruining it for those who have an articulate and meaningful opinion. Shame on you bad seeds…shame on you!
How could have Edgar Alfonzo allowed five runs when the score was 18-3?
Final score 18-13.
I thought Diaz was a reliever. I remember being disappointed when we gave him up on Black Friday (though with the losses of Kazmir, Huber, Peterson, Wigginton, it hardly made a difference). It would be nice to have 20-something starters ready for MLB duty at NO. Bostic still doesn’t seem ready, not sure what we’ll have with Vargas once he appears (nor the other Vargas, when he returns down the road). Diaz could be worth following.
I love the B-Mets lineup. Between the 3 big guys, we could have a 1B for the future, to go along with THM.
Matt, why dont u charge a small price to register like $10 a year to post. Jerks that want to come on here and say dumb things wont want to spend the money to do this. I know other sites like Kevin Smith’s View Askew did this to get rid of the haters.
I understand what you’re getting at, but I can’t back up your register fee idea. Seems unfair to make the smart Mets fans pay for the whiny Mets fans’ mistakes.
How about getting a couple of moderators though? Unpaid, just people who want to better the community – they’d have the ability to edit and delete comments. I think that’s worth a try…
Anyway, on topic! Good for Diaz, whom I don’t really know of.
And Let’s Go Mets!
I think moderators are a great idea. I know this isn’t a forum but on forums that I do belong to they have a few *regular* posters who also act as moderators and it really does make a huge difference in the way overall vibe of the community.
I think that since MetsBlog has gotten bigger it is probably getting harder and harder for one person(Matt)to keep up with the amount of comments and making sure that nothing *offensive* gets through. Having some trusted people work as mods would probably help a lot.
Hey sheed. Didn’t see your post before posting mine, but I second your subscription rate idea.
i like posting here but i wouldnt pay for it and i’m sure many others wouldnt either
I like the discipline. It’s depressing to read some of the comments here, although I read them anyway. Hateful comments don’t contribut to anything…I hope the attitude of this blog’s users change as the season progresses, becoming more positive, critical yet respectful.
Matt, I love MetsBlog– it’s a fantastic resource– and the time and care you put into it sticks out all over it. You’ve earned a tremendous amount of respect for the thoughtful, generous and fair tone you have set here, and I’ll respect anything you decide to do to maintain that.
Theresa from Brooklyn
I had no idea that there were racist remarks being posted. When did this happen?
Also, I second the moderator idea.
Unfortunately racist AND sexist remarks get posted many times. Do I get offended? Sometimes. But, most of the time I ignore it because I guess they don’t realize they’re being offensive.(i hope)
Jordon, thanks for the great minor league updates. Love them.
It’s great that so many at Binghamton are raking including Carp. It’s quite obvious they are preparing for life after Alou and Delgado by rotating everyone. Very encouraging that the prospects are responding to the challenge. I like the talent that’s in the pipeline, and with 3 first round picks this year, it should only get better.
I really wish the mets would try murphy at 2B..hes a waste at 3B
Man, Lucas French had to tough it out during that Binghamton game. He gave up14 runs in 4 innings. I hope the guy can recover, that’s tough.
right now there are 4 prospects that could eventually join the big club in the next year or 2, Carp(1B) Evans(1B/LF) Murphy(2B?) and obviously the teenage hitting machine.
The B-Mets are giving Murphy some time at 1B as well. Between the 3 of them, there is a huge amount of potential for one of them to pan out. Carp has just been racking this first week of the season. These 3 in the middle of the lineup make the B-Mets look like a potential offensive powerhouse.
Once the THM can get going, this team could be firing on all cylinders.
Don’t over look pitching prospects Niese & Kunz on this squad either. Niese has also looked fantastic thus far. There’s a lot of talent in Binghamton this season that could surprise Mets fans.
I agree with you , Matt.
This is a fantastic forum for Mets fans to get together and talk baseball and our favorite team…
there is place for racist or incendiary remarks…we can vent and project, but in a respectful way…
Sry…there is no place for racist or incendiary remarks…
The behavior of a tiny handful of so-called fans who use your site to spew their venom is embarrassing to all of us. The fact that it threatens your livelihood is totally unacceptable. I’m sure I’m not alone in yearning for the old days when the debates were always spirited but rarely mean-spirited. Nowadays, reading the exchanges makes me realize that what was once a huge difference in decorum between Met and Yankee fans is disappearing day by day.
We owe you a big debt of gratitude, Matt. I truly hope you don’t become a victim of your own success in creating and sustaining the most popular Mets site there is.
the sad thing is….the last post, matt is right. everybody acts as if every little inconvience is the end of the world. dont be so dramatic. the mets are a major leage leage baseball club. their grown men getting paid to play a kid’s game. Lets the mets worry about it. lets all just be fans.
b/c if the posts on here are racist and sexist SNY can’t sponsor it or give them shout outs during the game
What’s great about Metsblog is thoughtful fans posting thought-provoking remarks. The discussions of strategy and stats are great and I’ve learned a lot from you guys. The sarcasm is funny and entertaining, but the panic-button pushers are a drag. I applaud Matt for taking good care of us real fans. Keep up the good work, “buddy of Gary Cohen.”
Any updates on Reyes’ hamstring?
No offense Matt, none at all, but regarding to the last topic. I always thought of this site as a place for how did you put it? Angrer spewing, violent sounding Met fans? I dont know if those were the exact words. But I have always thought of this site sort of that way. It doesnt make me feel an different about your hard work or effort though. I think most people feel the same way. I stopped reading the comments for a few months, pretty much up until they obtained Santana, because then I thought people would lighten up a bit, which worked for 5 whole games. Its a solid site and you cant help if the readers and commenters come out like animals in bunches after a bad game.
Sadly, if you check the comments on other mets blog or sites like metsgeek, the comments section of metsblog gets ripped pretty regularly for the irrational stuff. So yes, I agree with you NR. This isn’t a relatively new development here.
but this is the only blog sponsored by the SNY. matt loses business b/c of a few morons.
As for the topic at hand, minor league reports. I love this stuff Jordan. However, if I could make a suggestion, I would love to get day to day updates on our top prospects like F-Mart and Pena, regardless of they did anything of merit. It’s great getting to read who the offensive “stars” of the day are, but obviously as are top guys get closer to the big leagues, we’re hungry to read how they do, good or bad.
As anyone who has read my comments will tell you, I have never once alluded to racism or sexism.
But now onto my real post. Jordan, I love the Minor League updates. I agree with a poster further up that between Evans, Murphy, and Carp, we have someone to replace Delgado. If I had the pick of the three, it would probably be Murphy (best plate patience, projects as a high OBP guy, would have good range at first). Unfortunately, Murphy also has relatively low homerun totals for the position…he projects to get about fifteen homers a year. I almost wonder if he could be somehow shifted to the outfield, because I like his bat and really his entire plate approach. Then you take your pick of Evans and Carp. Whoever is doing better gets the job (I’d likely pick Evans due to his ability to work walks much better; not to mention his power is developing and his SLG% is going up).
Hey, John Olerud never hit many homers and I loved the guy.
I’m not looking for the longball, per se, but Olerud was sort of an anomaly. These days, your average NL team has to (for some reason) have a slugging first baseman. I also remember in ST the broadcasting team mentioning that the Mets were looking for more power output from a first baseman than Murphy was putting up. Granted, I like Murphy a lot, and if I was calling the shots (Matt, “One Team, One Million GM’s” just about sums it up perfectly), he’d be heir apparent to Carlos Delgado. But it just looks like the Mets are not willing to go that route.
I rarely post, although I have a few times before, but I read this site and the user comments several times every day. That being said, I fully support an application or a filter to make the debates on this site more about actual baseball and less about racist topics as they have often become recently. IMHO, I’d rather people not see my opinions for an hour then have to sift through all of the other comments that have been posted on here recently.
I agree. nyclibertyboy is one that as i read through all the comments he seems to always be making the absurd comments and bringing commenting to a level that it should not be at.
Castillo is back in the line-up. He is batting second behind Pagan.
My problem is with all these people that just come on, and write so extremely you think the world was ending. Every little move by the mets(front office, managment, players) commentors come on and rip them apart. Then when someone disagrees with there rediculous comments they get offensive and thats where this anger comes from. This is not personal guys… relax and use this site for good.
plus Matt is the man and you dont wanna give him a bad name.
Well, on the comments issue, you can also try self-policing by tthe community (think Craig’s list). Put a flag button, and if something bad does show up, other posters can flag it to the review pile.
But, anything you do will drastically cut down on the volume (if you really want to clean it up), although it seems that MB has way more comments than other sites.
For the minors, it is shocking, but is it possible that the panic over the Met’s system being totally barren was overblown?
A lot of thse guys are 21-22 in AA, a nice age to break out and really become serious prospects.
I haven’t really analyzed the big 3, and also keep in mind that Defense will be a big concern, but there is hope.
Somehow, I don’t see them using a rreal rookie in 1B and LF next year, but who knows. It could really retool this team as a force for years to come, even if 2009 could be a little rocky!
I would love to see them fill 1B, and one of the other guys can become a back up OF/1B. Maybe even something like Carp and Evans platoon at 1B, and also get OF rotation time?
More likely, 1 guy (hopefully) wins a job, and the others either get another year to develop, or they end up going in a trade to fill another hole.
Remember, besied Alou and Delgado, they also have to replace Esley and ANderson.
