New Orleans (AAA): 9-0 win over Round Rock
RHP Brian Stokes tossed seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out five. RHP Duaner Sanchez, pitching in back to back days for the first time this season, threw a shutout eighth inning.
SS Anderson Hernandez was 1-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and 3 RBI. 1B Michel Abreu was held hitless, but walked three times and scored a run. 3B Fernando Tatis was 2-for-4 with a homer and a walk, while RF Jose Feliciano finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI.
Binghamton (AA): 11-10 win over Erie
RHP Jake Ruckle was effective, tossing six innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and no walks, with a strikeout. RHP Eddie Kunz had his first rough outing of the year, allowing three hits on three hits and two walks before finally closing the door in the ninth.
Another huge night offensively for the middle of the B-Met order. 1B Mike Carp continued his season long mash fest, upping his average to .474 by going 4-for-5 with a double, his team leading fourth homerun of the season, and three RBI. 3B Danny Murphy, 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI, finished the night matching Carp with a .474 average. Not far behind is DH Nick Evans, who is now at .444 after he “only” went 2-for-5 with a triple, run scored and two driven in. OF Fernando Martinez was 1-for-4 with a walk and run scored.
St. Lucie (A+): 11-6 loss to Jupiter
RHP Eric Niesen, a 2007 draftee out of Wake Forest, took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks in five innings pitched.
1B Lucas Duda now has five hits in his last eight at bats after a 3-for-4 night. The USC product drew two walks, scored a run and drove in another. SS Ruben Tejada was 1-for-5 with two runs scored, and 2B Hector Pellot finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Savannah (A-): 9-2 loss to Columbia
LHP Nathan Vineyard, a supplemental first round pick in last June’s draft, had his second rough outing in as many starts, getting pegged for nine runs on seven hits and four walks in just four innings pitched.
A light night offensively, Richie Lucas, another ‘07 draftee, started at DH and went 1-for-4 with a double, while C Francisco Pena was 1-for-4. 3B Jake Eigsti drove in both Sand Gnat runs with an eighth inning homer.

bring up carp evans and murphy…i’m excited for all 3 of them haha
but seriously, i’m glad to see all 3 having a stellar year so far, that is a nasty middle of the lineup
i also like them moving evans to the outfield, leaving carp at first base…now just move murphy to 2nd and will be all set haha
but in all seriousness, keep up with these reports, i love ‘em
Nice to see Sanchez successful in back to back days. We need him.
B-Mets are a dynasty!!!
Now if only we could find positions for Carp, Evans, and Duda, we’d have something brewing on the farm . . . man, that’s a bad mixed metaphor.
Yup, nice to see some offensive might in the minors!
The key (if they all keep having big years), is figuring out how to handle each one. Who do you keep, and who becomes trade bait?
Also good that they are adjusting positions.
Anyone know with the 1B guys (Evans and Carp), how they are rated defensively? I assume that no matter how much they rake, if the glove is suspect, you will never see them at Shea.
Also have to decide on the time table for being ready. Say 1 guy looks good for 2009, but the others need another year, you don’t really have to worry about the logjam. Also keep in mind that F Mart is the heir apparent in LF.
So, hope that Carp or Evans is ready to take over in 2009 at 1B. I love to see 1 rookie worked into the mix each year, it keeps the team fresh!
Even better, if they are LH and RH (I should look this stuff up..), keep them both. If Carp starts, Evans can rotate at 1B and OF, effectively replacing Delgado and (probably) Easley.
It wil be interesting. Hopefully at least one of them continues to have a monster year and wins the job in2009.
Oh, Murphy to 2B? Might not be a bad idea!
I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANY ‘DUANER TO THE RESCUE’ BS!!!!
This MLB team has far more issues than just our bullpen at the moment.
Actually, the ‘pen has been by far the biggest question mark.
From what I gather I think Evans has a little bit better glove at first base, but not by a big margin or anything. Evans seems to be a little more athletic so I think that’s why they are trying him out in the OF. I am pretty sure if all 3 have productive first halves at AA, we will be seeing them in AAA by end of June, beginning of July. Carp is looking like he did in Spring training of last year, which is definitely a good sign.
Sad thing is, especially with Murphy (who might be the overall best hitter of the 3) you can probably expect 2 to become trade bait, unless they move positions. I really wish that all 3 will stay with the team and not be traded away.
I think they will lean more to keeping Carp because he will have a lot more pop than the other 2. But, both Murphy and Evans get a lot of XBH.
Personally, I say let Carp take 1B, move Murphy to 2B to take over Castillo’s spot, and Evans to the OF, and find them all a home on the 2009 roster with F-Mart, haha. Won’t happen but nice to think. (That would be 6 of the 9 starters homegrown, yikes and exciting at the same time!)
Evans is a RH, and Murphy and Carp are LH I believe. Unfortunately, with the signing of Castillo for 4 years, I feel like the organization would be hesitant to move anyone to the 2B spot, especially with Hector Pellot at single A and probably at minimum another 2 years away (more in time with Castillo’s contract).
I think we have a lot more talent than a lot of people think.
But it’s nice to see that our farm system has some under-the-radar prospects and are quietly doing very well. Also, has anyone taken a look at the pitching on the B-Mets? Jakob Ruckle, Jose Sanchez, and Niese all have started 2 games, and all have an ERA under 2.00. Nice to see. hopefully they can keep it up as well.
These guys are playin AA and your talkin ‘09 for them in
NY? thats just nuts.Martinez for one is not even close.
Plus, if you think Castillo is goin anywhere , you’re
crazy-nuts. hes one of Omars guys!
Evans started out as a 3B i believe but he’s been playing 1B for a while. They’re all kind of in the same range defensively. Nobody is a gold glover, but nobody is horrible. I like Ruckle, but it is really doubtful that he can be a good big leaguer. His stuff is pretty average to below average and he relies on his windup. When pitchers, especially starters, depend on their windups without great stuff they usually aren’t very good. Repeating that windup over and over, and eventually players will pick it up. Niese is one of our best pitching prospects, probably our best, considering Pelfrey is in the big leagues. I don’t have much info on Sanchez and Murphy though.
