Health: Sanchez Today? Wise in April
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 15, 2008 8:44 am

the buzz from Shea Stadium this past weekend was that Duaner Sanchez will likely be promoted today from Triple-A to New York, while Carlos Muniz will be sent back down

it will surely be an emotional day for duaner, who has not pitched in the major leagues since July, 2006, when he injured his shoulder in a taxi accidentin other words, read my lips, no more taxis

On Sunday, Willie Randolph told he reporters that Matt Wise is not expected to re-join the team until the end of April, since the pitcher has yet to begin a throwing program.

Wise has been on the disabled list since April 2 with a bruised right forearm.

…honestly, this is fine by me…let him rest, keep working out and be fresh, this way, when some reliever on the major league roster falls apart, and you know some one will, a fresh arm can ready to take his placerotation, rotation, rotation, i.e., Bullpen 2.0…

Help us, Dirty Wan Kanobe…you’re our only hope.

I am really wondering where Duaner fits into the bullpen at this point. After a whole season last year with “No defined roles” it seems like this year the roles this year are hard and fast. I am not saying I want him throwing the 8th inning his first time out in a year and a half but it would be nice to know that with a number of strong performances we could see him back there.
Also if when Wise returns Sanchez is throwing well it really changes the look of out bullpen. Sosa is truly relegated to long relief while I believe Wise can pitch to both sides of the plate effectively with his change-up.
One day without baseball and I am optimistic again…who knew

Damn - I can’t wait to see Duaner back on the bump. It is almost hard to remember just how good this guy was going before he was injured.

Wrap him in bubble wrap and get him to the stadium before he gets hurt again.

Hopefully Sanchez will return to 2006-form but if and when Wise returns, who gets sent back down?

Currently with Duaner replacing Muniz our bullpen looks like this…

    Wagner
    Sanchez
    Heilman
    Feliciano
    Schoenweiss
    Sosa
    Smith

Will Joe Smith be sent back down in favor of Matt Wise? I would argue against doing so considering Joe Smith gives opposing hitters a different look (sidearm) and Heilman does what Matt does better (changeup)…

If Sanchez can get back to his old self, suddenly this bullpen doesn’t seem so weak. I hope by June 1 he is the clear 8th inning guy.

Doesn’t Muniz have a 0 ERA and a .5 WHIP so far? I thought he looked good last year too. The only other option however is Joe Smith, who I also think is pretty good. Given that, even if Sanchez pitches well, does he really make this bullpen better? Or is this bullpen already pretty good, especially once Heilman settles down, as he’s shown he’s likely to do.

It just depends on how Sanchez looks. That is why I think the Mets will hold off on Wise for a few weeks keeping him on the DL. Then if Sanchez looks healthy and Smith is still doing well, both of which are big ifs, you can look to make a trade.

I have to give props to Carlos Muniz who pitched excellently on Saturday in 2 innings of relief… He looked terific out there and is an option for this team’s pen in the future.

  6. CaseStreet says:

After all the Pedro disappointment, I’d love to see a healthy Sanchez.

  7. rogasm says:

Thank you Carlos Muniz. You did very well while you were here…See you soon, I’m sure.

I really wish we could just bite the bullet and ditch Sosa. He’s maddeningly inconsistent and Muniz (admittedly, in limited duty and mostly mop-up) has outpitched him. Yes, yes, Sosa is the “only long man” but I really think that’s overrated — how often do you see a “long man” go more than 2 innings anyway? In an emergency situation (e.g. extra innings) a starter could be used if push comes to shove. I guess the best we can hope for is that Sosa is relegated to mop-up role and Duaner takes most of his innings, assuming that he can handle it at this point.

    • therealsince86 says:

Funny but Sosa has came up big for us in some spots this season. I actually think he is just being over used which is something that will stop once Sanchez is back. Right now Sosa is the first mop up man/8th inning man. That’s not an easy role.

  9. followmelevi says:

Am I the only one who likes Carlos Muniz? He’s done well so far. I’d rather see Joe Smith sent down… he’s too erratic and doesn’t seem to have control of his pitches yet.

    • Ceetar says:

I think Joe Smith has been good too. In a perfect world it’d be Schoeneweis who got sent down. I agree about Muniz, he pitched pretty well last year too, in his limited appearances.

  10. cver says:

I know that roster-jugging is tough and I haven’t thought this all the way through, but it sure seems as shaky as our bullpen has been that it might not be the smartest move to send down Muniz, who has so far been terrific.

  11. therealsince86 says:

It is a tough decision as who to send down now and when Wise comes back. I think it will be important for Willie and management to get the best out of the young arms of Muniz and Smith. Use up their trips to AAA to keep each other fresh. We saw what happen to Smith last season and already he has been in 6 games this season.
That is not a knock on Willie, hopefully our starters can finish the 6th and 7th innings sometimes.

    Good News Good News

Hopefully by the All Star break he is totally back to normal and it’s

    Wagner -closer
    Sanchez- set up 8th
Heilman and Feliciano team in the 7th
Sosa, Schoenweiss, Wise, long and mop up

As for Pedro being out till June likely , G didnt see that coming
