During an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman
last night, David Wright was hit by a pitch from the talk-show host while taking batting practice on 53rd Street.
Wright laughed it off, egging Letterman on to ‘Bring the heat.’

…thanks to rowdy for the links…
In a report for Newsday, Katie Strang talked with Wright after the appearance, who said the team’s problem so far has been ‘execution,’ noting that New York is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately city.

I didn’t see it as we don’t get Letterman in Ireland (do get Leno, however). Anyway, I’ll be interested to see if the fans who come here are in the mood for playfulness.
According to Letterman, the city told them no more hardballs, so they were softballs, but baseball-sized ones.
I thought those were spongeballs, the way they sounded coming off the bat.
I dont think that “what have you done for me lately” is a correct term to apply to METS fans. We have supported you and stood by you and defended you against Yankee fans and Phillie fans all winter long. We watched game 7 in 2006 and game 162 in 2007, we know you are better and we want you to win. The question should be from the fans to the team ‘what have you done for US lately’? You collapsed and play baseball like you have forgotten the basics. YOu can’t drive a man in from third with 1 out and Mota on the mound. We do support you, but, you must earn or respect and playing good sound baseball is the way to do that. Its very simple. Enough talk, we have heard it all in 2007, its time for action. Go out there and ROLLL OVER the other teams and WIN big and win often. LETS GO METS !!!!
perfectly said!
How can you say it’s not what have you done for me lately, when Johan get booed at Shea when he had two great starts before? Mets fans love the team when they’re doing good and hate them when they’re not. There’s nothing wrong with what D-Wright said.
Inspirational, except it is completely false. It isn’t a “what have you done for me lately?” city? Met fans aren’t those types of fans? It’s completely pathetic right now with the booing. It makes me not want to be a fan. It’s just awful how pathetic the people are who boo after a bad inning because they think it validates them, or because the team “owes” them. They’re playing baseball, and they’ll play it better without the booing. I know, I know, booing is cool. It makes you feel like you’re apart of it (you as in anyone). But it is so weak, and any justification of it is laughable.
I think he was trying to create a little humor.
Isn’t what you just described “what have you done for me lately”?
Having watched the clips from the Letterman show – thanks Matt – I wonder if Wright will be in trouble thanks to those remarks about the fights in the stands. I half suspect that MLB and the Mets will not be happy with how blasé he was about fans fighting.
I agree that no one…and I mean NO ONE want to hear any more talky talk with this team.
It is officially put up or shutup time, on April 15th. I’m not interested in comments, predictions, thoughts, post game reactions. Just win already.
I thought it was awesome….he’s just like the rest of us, only he’s out on the field.
I was wondering the same thing. As great as that story was to hear, I’m surprised he didn’t take a more diplomatic approach and talk about the rivlary on the field or leave it saying the fans of both teams don’t like each other.
Note to Letterman, if you ever invite Jimmy Rollins (presumably withe the chance to bean him), bend the NYC rules and use real baseballs.
David’s a straight-up pimp.
uh, is it just me or was d-wright limping off at the end of that batting practice session?
yeah, i noticed that too
