I would like to see Pedro bag, hoping he can stay on the filed for the rest of the season.

Duque? Stay away.

One thing to remember with these guys. If they come back, someone has to go. So, unless they send down Pelfrey (since he has options), you lose someone else.

Assume Figgy is still being productive (and healthy). You want to cut him for Duque, and then be screwed a week later when he gets hurt agian?

So, unless there is obvious dead wood to cut or DL, the geezers coming back wil have consequences.

"Pressing" is a word tossed around this team a lot, but forgive me if I don't buy it. I don't believe in failure as a result of trying to hard. Something else is missing. Maybe it's talent, maybe it's youth, maybe it's the fire we expect from millionaire sports-figures, maybe it's the manager, or maybe this team is just not as good as we all anticipated.

We can move on as a fan base, sure, and we should -- anything we get from Pedro or El Duque is gravy. The organization, however, should still try to get as much from them as it can. They shouldn't rely on them, and they shouldn't disrupt everyone else's turn in the rotation multiple times during the year, but Pedro as a spot fifth starter for a couple of months wouldn't be a bad thing.

Excellent point, Charlie. I wish more people would realize that HGH isn't cheating your opponents it is cheating father time. Players using it to stay healthy longer make a better product for the fans and a better sport overall.

Frankly I was thinking about it yesterday and the only thing Pedro has done for this team is make it more attractive to other players. Otherwise on the field he's done NOTHING to help this team, period. Remember all the concerns about his health in 05' when he was signed to a four year deal? Well it looks like those concerns were valid. In my opinion, i dont htink this is a big deal.

The worst part about this is missing the heart he brings to the team, that's what they need more than arms at this point.

I could not help but think of Bannister when this happened and he took for ever to come back. Granted he had complications develop but I really wonder if we will see Pedro again this year. And I really don't think we will see him before July.

I agree - the Bats need to improve, in the clutch and otherwise.

But Willie's mismanagement of the pitching staff - both bullpen and starters - is likely going to be a long term issue unless he wises up really soon.

That really concerns me, while the necessity of hitting does not so much. The bats will come around, but the pitching/pitching management is a whole other issue that needs some fundamental changes in order to get us through a long season.

At the risk of sounding irrationally optimistic, when Pedro went down, I got to thinking about the whole thing and this is really how I feel:

Maybe this is for the best as far as the Mets are concerned. It is VERY sad and VERY difficult to see good/great players at the end of their careers. It also presents a major problem for the team because the garner so much respect and are shown such deferrence, that it can actually hurt the team.

Many people have said that if Pedro is healthy he can get people out and win games. But I'm not so sure about that anymore. The problem is, if Pedro IS healthy, the Mets will run him out there. And what you will likely get is a mediocre or sub-par 5 inning pitcher at best. That will result in a lot of games with the Mets likely behind on the scoreboard and into their bullpen in the 5th or 6th inning. This will stress a bullpen that already figures to be overused throughout the year.

All the above can be said for El Duque as well. Consider it a blessing that they aren't both healthy. We would likely experience the above 2 out of every 5 starts.

I think that a healthy Pedro / El Duque combination MIGHT win 12 - 15 games combined. And they AREN'T healthy, and both figure to miss so much time that even that figure is most likely unattainable. If you don't believe some COMBINATION of Figueroa/Pelfrey/Armas, Jr./Claudio Varga and even a Jonathan Niese can win 15 games then the Mets aren't really contenders anyway.

So I have resigned myself to the thinking that maybe the best thing for the Mets this year is to see both of them shelved for the bulk of the season, see what we can get from some younger arms and cut ties with both Pedro and El Duque at season's end. Sad to say, but they are both finished.
