According to Bart Hubbach in the New York Post, Pedro
Martinez is expected to be out until at least the middle of May, and possibly into June.
…rock on, Nelson Figueroa…stay alert, Claudio Vargas…hi, Orlando Hernandez…
Hubbach also provides a quote or two from Mets GM Omar Minaya regarding Martinez’s progress and the team’s overall performance.
Tagged Pedro Martinez |According to Wallace Matthews in Newsday, money is not buying happiness for the Mets and Yankees.
…or for columnists at Newsday, either, it seems…
…for what it’s worth, i thought these teams were in the business of making money, which is directly connected to winning…i didn’t realize their goal was to buy happiness…so, how about if the Mets sign a puppy-dog to play first base next year…i mean, that will certainly make my nephew happy…
…the buzz from Shea Stadium this past weekend was that Duaner Sanchez will likely be promoted today from Triple-A to New York, while Carlos Muniz will be sent
back down…
…it will surely be an emotional day for duaner, who has not pitched in the major leagues since July, 2006, when he injured his shoulder in a taxi accident…in other words, read my lips, no more taxis…
On Sunday, Willie Randolph told he reporters that Matt Wise is not expected to re-join the team until the end of April, since the pitcher has yet to begin a throwing program.
Wise has been on the disabled list since April 2 with a bruised right forearm.
…honestly, this is fine by me…let him rest, keep working out and be fresh, this way, when some reliever on the major league roster falls apart, and you know some one will, a fresh arm can ready to take his place…rotation, rotation, rotation, i.e., Bullpen 2.0…
During an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman
last night, David Wright was hit by a pitch from the talk-show host while taking batting practice on 53rd Street.
Wright laughed it off, egging Letterman on to ‘Bring the heat.’

…thanks to rowdy for the links…
In a report for Newsday, Katie Strang talked with Wright after the appearance, who said the team’s problem so far has been ‘execution,’ noting that New York is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately city.
In a post to Mets Geek, Jeff Mathews wonders if he should drink the Angel Pagan Kool-Aid.
Prior to Sunday’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that Pagan will return to the bench when Moises Alou returns from the disabled list.
Naturally, Randolph downplayed Pagan’s performance this season, as he always seems to do when a young player does well in a short period of time, referring to him as a ‘back-up player,’ adding, “I hope he stays this way all year long.”
…for some reason, people care about this statement…i do not…since, i know so much could happen between now and the day alou returns, which includes the mystery of whether alou will ever return…i mean, maybe Ryan Church falls apart, maybe alou hurts himself again, maybe pagan hits 20 HR or strikes out every single at bat between now and May…who knows and who cares what willie says today, which, frankly, is simply stating the obvious, given the current dynamic of the team…that said, pagan is playing so well right now, it’s a great problem to have…and i hope he does so well he makes this situation as difficult as possible…and i believe he can…
…in other words, drink up, jeff…
For more on Pagan, check out Newsday, the Journal News, and the Bergen Record, all of whom provide more quotes from Randolph, as well as from Pagan.
On Opening Day, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and the MTA traveled with a David Wright statue and Mr. Met to Shea Stadium, according to the Brooklyn Met Fan.
At Shea Nation, Reed Auerbach writes of his son’s amazing day as bat boy for the Mets – thanks to Willie Randolph’s charity.
In a post to Hot Foot, Gary Grund lists some stats and asks you to Guess the Pitcher, and then rips the bandaid off to reveal the answer.
