The Mets (7–6) defeated the Nationals (4–11) by the score of 5 to 2 at Shea Stadium tonight. For a recap and boxscore, go to SNY.tv.
…well so much for the Mets early season power outage…Ryan Church connected on the first of the Mets three homeruns tonight in the bottom of the first…church has shown some early success hitting lefties, especially on mediocre breaking balls from southpaws…
…Jose Reyes hit his first homerun of the season in the fifth to tie the game at 2…nice to see jose getting into a groove…the smiling, fun-loving reyes seems to be back…welcome back, jose…and the old adage of how reyes goes, so goes the Mets is becoming more true with every game, even the folks at SNY put up a telling graphic providing the statistical proof…
…the big blow came in the fifth with a three-run bomb from Carlos Beltran off the tiring Matt Chico…carlos is locked in from the right side of the plate…even after the game beltran, speaking with SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, admitting to feeling more comfortable from the right side so far this season…
…on the pitching side, John Maine certainly looked better than he had in his previous two outings, but he doesn’t seem to be comfortable just yet…he is looking more like the john main of 2006 than 2007 with his fastball riding high away from batters and when he did get the ball down it was in the heart of the plate…he battled and looked quite annoyed that he was unable to get through the seventh…you can see signs he is coming around and look forward to seeing a more dominate maine in the very near future…
…give a game ball to Joe Smith for coming in and bailing out maine in the seventh and getting a big double play after hitting Lasting Milledge with a pitch in the eighth…
…oh, and Chad Cordero, it looks as if a visit to Dr. James Andrews is in your future…just saying…
…another good win tonight in which the Mets looked crisp in all phases…keep it rolling, guys, keep it rolling…
Tomorrow, the Mets continue their series against the Nationals, with Nelson Figueroa facing John Lannan, starting at 7:10 pm.

This is the kind of game we can smile about. Way to build some momentum going into CBP this weekend.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. David Wright is the best player on the Mets. Jose Reyes is the most important. As I said the other day, if Reyes has a 2006-type season and Duaner stabilizes the bullpen, this is a 95 win team.
Man that was sad when Cordero came in. He wasn’t even reaching 85.
85? Ha, poor dude barely made it to 82.
Actually, for the most part, Gary and Keith were saying that he wasn’t even reaching 80. It was crazy for Acta to leave him in there beyond the first batter–or even at all, since they went out to check on him before pitch 1, so they obviously saw something was wrong. Kudos to Cordero for pitching through it, and even pitching a scoreless inning, but with such obvious problems, he was stupid to stay in there, and Acta was even worse for not taking him out–after all, it is rare for a pitcher to admit he cannot pitch.
but wait, I thought Manny Acta was the miracle worker who could manage circles around Willie? You mean, he actually made a bullpen mistake? I thought Willie was the only manager in baseball who ever made bullpen mistakes?
Gametracker kept calling his pitches “changeup.”
After the first in which somehow, he ONLY gave up 1 run, I thought Maine was outstanding for the next 5 2/3. In the 6th and 7th, more than tiring, I thought he was losing focus, which is an issue for him. Ollie and Maine have two opposing issues – Ollie gets over-hyped in certain adverse situations. Maine tends to forget where he is and start going through the motions when the game is in a smooth flow. If you listen to Willie, he always needs to calm down Perez and wake up (for shake life into) Maine. Odd, but Mets have learned how to handle both, and when to get both of them out. These are two guys who we got cheap b/c they failed the first time around. Give the Jacket a ton of credit here, and some for Willie as well.
Beating this crappy team is great, but let’s be honest, if the Mets go down to CBP after this series with Santana and Co. and lose the series, then everything is back to square one. The Mets have to show that they can maintain this momentum over a stretch. Something the Mets NEVER did last year (I think they only had a 5 game winning streak once last year).
Way to be positive after a nice win…can’t you enjoy it for at least an hour?
Back to square one because we lost a series to a division rival in their home park? I think thats a pretty pessimistic view.
I guess losing any games at home must be a castrophe then too huh? I assume you are one of the incessant Shea Stadium Booers
Matt is 100% correct. Beating the Nats is nothing to get overly joyed about, beating the Nats should be considered simply taking care of business.
When I see this team go into CBP and take 2 out of 3, then it will be time to enjoy it. Until then, let’s finish off the Nats tomorrow, every win counts…some just feel better because of the competition.
I think hes overreacting a bit whe you say we are back to square 1 if we don’t take 2 out of 3. I am not getting over joyed about a nats win, but you need to be a little more even keeled
I am even keeled. I’m not getting too excited over beating a last place team. Like I said, it’s nice, I’m happy, but the Mets have to show that they can win with some consistency because they didn’t all last year.
Agreed, this team needs to show consistency, let’s see them take 5 out of 6, 8 out of 11, 15 out of 20, let’s roll up some wins before we just praise ever win over the Nats.
I think being happy about beating up the lowly Nats is defeatest and insecure.
You mean like booing?
not really. To be the best team in baseball, you HAVE to take care of business against the worst teams. You’re gonna lose games to the other good teams, that’s to be expected, but against the cellar-dwellers you need to dominate. So far, the Mets have been doing that. Last year they didn’t. So it is something to be excited about.
How many W’s does a win against the Phillies count as? The same as one against the Nationals at home?
Yes?
Ok then, that’s what matters…
Stay positive.
You didn’t know? The Mets are supposed to win every game. If not, we get to boo again! Yay! I love the booing. It validates me as a fan.
Anybody here remember when people were calling for Omar’s head last season after he failed to trade for Cordero? I recall the asking price being something along the lines of Pelfrey and a prospect.
Mmmm, mmm, mmm.
Awesome win! Great games by Reyes, Beltran, and Church…and of course John Maine, who overcame early problems and fell into a groove (and for the first time I can remember, showed some serious emotion on the mound…anyone else hear him yell “F***!!!” when he got yanked?). But yeah, as someone mentioned above, it was painful watching Chad Cordero. I don’t hate the Nats; they’re easily my second favorite team in the division. And with a guy like Cordero, you don’t wish injury on him. I hope he goes back to the DL as opposed to wrecking his shoulder. That was real grit he showed.
agree with you about the Nats, although I wasn’t so fond of them in September, when they played us like it was Game 7 for 2 straight weeks, then rolled over for the Phillies.
Although Matt198 has a decent point with the sustaining momentum bit from last year, the flip side of that is that they won pretty consistently (except for when it counted…but thats life as a Mets fan (see Appendices A, B, C on Armando Benitez, The 2000 Subway Series, and Kenny Rogers in the 1999 ALCS respectively)
Looked to be a pretty solid win, minus the 6-7-8 guys going 0 for 12 on the day and striking five times between them. Jeez. Anyways, Maine is finding his way , Smith continues to look really, really good, and batters 1-5 are finding some pop to their bats. Shea even *gasp* cheered Maine when he left the game. Woaaaah. Crazy talk!
On a completely unrelated note, I just started subscribing to mlb.tv (im on the move alot so cant get season-ticket tv package). After watching a couple of Yankee games on YES, I have to say I’m really really grateful for the SNY sportscasters. So kudos Keith and Company, you’re the best in NYC at least.
You mean the 5-6-7 hitters, Castillo batted 8th and went 3 for 4.
Can Delgado hit a homer??????
The SNY booth is best in baseball, not just NY…I have the Extra Innings package, and the feeds from some booths when the Mets are on the road are just brutal (Nats, Marlins, Cards, D’Backs are some of the worst).
Ummm…. WHY would you be watching a Skankee game? Ew.
I watch Braves and Phillies games when the Mets game is not on, just to root against them.
I’m thinking the hip injury is robbing him of a lot of power.
Yes, the Nationals are not great competition, but it’s not like we beat a minor league team tonight. Chico had 2 decent starts prior to this one, and the Nats lineup is pretty solid (just not hitting at the moment). This is a team that can cause some real damage when they’re on (as we’ve seen before…).
Keeping the comment section on during the game gives you a great idea of which fans are booing. This IS NOT FOOTBALL, each play, good or bad, is not as important as you think, but as you watch the game and see the comments you can pull out those fans who believe we are in a sprint not a marathon. Funny enought these are the same fans who pile on when we win. After Maine gave up the dinger to kearns there were “maine sucks” comments……uggh people need to sit back, its a LONG season.
I changed over to the yankee game to get a score and the yanks had just given up six runs in one inning. The last out ended with a sox K, there was a genuine cheer from the fans. I realize they have 26 championships but it is clear that shea and met fans all around are filled with pessimism and a desire to boo, its sad. When milledge got hit I heard cheers, even sadder, we are now getting into philadelphia eagle fan territory. I wonder if shea would boo santa if the mets were losing.
Lets Go Mets, enjoy the ride.
santa should get booed. I asked for a Mets World Series and I didnt get it.
yeah, something is really really wrong with a lot of metsfans this year. grow up, people.
Santa is a homewrecker. He deserves boos.
People did cheer when Milledge got hit, and it made me sick to my stomach. We are not Phillies fans, folks, remember: We are NOT Phillies fans!
Nelson to make it 2 for 2, did you guys here that perdo says he’d be back in two weeks? he must really hate psl right now!
Yeah, although the discrepancy between what Pedro said and what Omar said is drastic, to say the least.
Omar: Mid-May or Early June
Pedro: Late April (as in, a few weeks from now)
I think Pedro may just be getting a bit anxious and impatient, after not pitching for so long. But I hope he’s right.
Hey Mike, I guess this is kind of nit-picking but Jose hit his homer to start the 5th to tie the game at 2 and 3 batters later Beltran hit his homer, 4 runs in the 5th.
Again, one game at a time, Metville can sleep a little sounder tonight.
gotta admit i’m embarrassed by those fans cheering and jeering milledge. like matt cerrone said earlier, he didnt trade himself. i understand why metfan is quickly becoming the laughing stock of the entire mlb.
clean it up and stay classy, ny.
First thing I wanna point out is that I didnt boo Milledge tonight, hell i hope he turns into a star. we got a good return for him, and id be happy if Washington got some fan support.
However, he may not have “traded himself” but he’s been bashing the Mets non-stop since being traded. he should be thanking them for putting him on a team he can call his own, he can start in his “natural” position and bat in the heart of the lineup.
So yeah theres plenty of reason to boo him. LoDuca too. I think Paulie will get mixed reactions. He was a favorite here, but he hasnt moved on and continues bashing the Mets.
these guys taking shots at us has me wondering: when was the last time that we had a guy who really wanted out of New York after a stint with the Mets? The only guy I could think of was Mike Hampton. It feels to me like players love playing for the Mets and that’s why they get so pissy if the Mets don’t want them anymore.
again, he was an 07 met who was on the field for a good part of sept – boooooooo
I loved Maines fire!
I loved Joe Smiths guts!
I love the current batting order!
LET’S GO METS!
“Jose Reyes says his dancing days are back. The shortstop, who homered for the first time this season in Wednesday’s 5-2 win against the Nationals, was convinced to return to his choreographed routines and spontaenous celebrations by none other than Carlos Beltran before the series opener.”I see when somebody’s not happy,” Beltran said. “I didn’t think he was happy. I told him, ‘I want you to be the Reyes you’ve always been.’ Him being quiet, that’s not him. … We don’t care if other teams get offended.”
who says Beltran can’t be a leader…thanks for the story zen.
That really is a very positive development.
Just read Noble’s story about Beltran telling Jose to be Jose again. Some great quotes in that story. That is a superb job by Beltran
but .. but .. mike and the maddog told me this team has no leaders. Now I’m confused.
;)
looks like Beltran really is turning into the Rollins of this team. Not as loudmouth and outspoken, but he’s stepping into that leadership role. Good to see.
that is friggin great!
that’s JUST what i wanted to tell jose! great job, moletron!
didn’t reyes’ homerun tie it at two, not give them the lead
I’m a little concerned with how reliant the mets are on jose..the whole ‘as jose goes, so goes the mets’ is scary! considering how much he struggled in september, and so did the team as a whole. If teams keep him quiet, the met offense isnt the same..
but great win tongiht. maine struggled early, but pulled it together enough to get the win.
I’ve been thinking the same thing for 2 years now. They seem almost psychologically dependant on him…can be alarming in a short playoff series, if they get there.
I believe the Mets are undefeated when Castillo doesn’t bat second. I like it.
Let’s hope they continue the trend when Castillo sits for the next three days to “rest his knees”. What a joke.
like how after he signs a 4 year deal, he tells willie he wants to sit every 3rd day?
barry bonds of the infield without the home run production :-\
To be fair he said when they play 3 or 4 in a row. At worst that’s 22 games if you count the built in off days. That’s 140 games and I would be glad to get that much out of him if he is as productive as he usually is.
Hey, he came back from knee surgery. Something you obviously know nothing about. He is not 100% yet he is still going out on the field. He asked to do this while he recovers. This is sensible and he deserves credit for being honest and caring about the team.
…Jose Reyes hit his first homerun of the season in the fourth to give the Mets a 2-1 lead
I thought Reyes homerun tied the game at two?
From the AP article on ESPN: “Smith hit Lastings Milledge in the right forearm with a pitch in the eighth, which induced a vulgar chant from the Shea Stadium crowd…”
Any insight as to what that vulgar chant was, specifically? Or was it just general cheering at a player being potentially hurt? (in which case “vulgar” wouldn’t even be a harsh enough term)
I agree – cheering when someone gets/potentially gets hurt is low class all around.
Booing Milledge in general however is something I have no problem with whatsoever. He is on the enemy now – I don’t care if he didn’t ask to be traded – he has done nothing but bash the team non stop since he was traded which is exactly the attitude that some speculate got him traded off the team in the first place. The fans owe him nothing other than the general respect they should give another player on another team – and that really should be not wishing harm upon him…..
Then again, Jets fans cheered pennington when he got hurt too……so maybe its just a NY thing.
Regardless of whether this was the Nats, we shut the door tonight, we will take the series in Philly. Mark my words. Don’t discount the fact that the mets beat the Nats – this is the same team (or similar, with a few of our guys on there now) we couldn’t shut the door against last season. This team just needs to focus.
So true, so true. The ones saying that it’s just the Nats are the same one’s who say that every game is important.
Shut the door on the Nats by sweeping the series not by taking two of three against a team playing as poorly as the Nats. Go into Philly feeling good coming off a win and not a loss. Great teams sweep other teams every once in a while so it would be nice to get a sweep in this situation. Two out of three is not acceptable in this particular series.
