Quote: Willie Jokes with Pelfrey
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 16, 2008 9:55 am

Willie Randolph, speaking about Mike Pelfrey, after the game:

“Obviously, Pelfrey was outstanding.  The kid threw the heck out of the ball tonight.  He used everything he had…total game for him.  That’s the way we want him to be…He’s growing, he’s maturing, and that’s the main thing for him.  He gets better as he goes out there…Pelfrey is just learning how to pitch at this level.  I mean, he’s gone through some growing pains, and he still needs to be more consistent with his location, but you can see he’s coming.  He’s a kid with a good chance to be a quality major-league pitcher.”

Pelfrey was introduced to reporters while Randolph was wrapping up his comments and still sitting at the table, so Randolph smiled and said jokingly, “Oh he’s over there, and I was saying good things about it him, (sigh), never mind, never mind all that.”

After which Pelfrey, Randolph and the reporters all laughed.

…this was a far cry from the serious, nervous and frustrated version of randolph from the game before…i’m glad he can keep a sense of humor, because that is important…fact is, there were a lot of smiles last night, from willie to Jose Reyes to the fans in the stands, which is a welcomed change from the tense environment of the last few days…

…i mean, for us, baseball is supposed to be fun…i am stressed out enough at work…i look to the game as a way to relax and have fun, not stress out more…and lately, the Mets have been stressful…last night was fun…

YOU are stressed out at work?

You write a blog about baseball! I wish I can be stressed out like that everyday!

Seriously, Matt has it easy. Some days I’m required to watch 4 maybe 5 hours of television at work. It really strains my eyes!

Sense of humor or not, at least Willie is acknowledging it. That just means he got the message. Thank goodness.

  4. ToastyJoe says:

Willie actually praised a young player. I bet he wasn’t kidding when he tried to take it back.

Actually, while it was refreshing and fun to watch, I don’t mind the odd nailbiter now and then — it’s exciting. The problem is that of late, the “nailbiters” have been “nailbiters” because of sloppy play and poor clutch performance.

I did have fun last night, but it didn’t stop me from worrying that we couldn’t add to that 2 run lead, and that Reyes kept be stranded at 3rd with no outs or one out.

Then Wright came through and all was well. But still…

    Hey Matt…enjoy the games. Don’t get overworked…

Gary said something last night to the effect of winning will erase some of the rough feelings of the last week or so. Seems he was right. I hope the team can keep this up and go into Philly feeling good and positive.

Can Omar get some measure of credit for making sure that Big Pelf was not included in the Santana trade? It’s only one win for the kid, but right now he’s headed in a positive direction, particularly when compared to Mr. Hughes’ recent outings with the Skankees.

Willie always seems burdened. He doesnt seem “easy going” in that Joe Torre type way. Torre was always so pleasant and inviting especially with the media but Randolph appears bothered or annoyed when challenged by media. Torre just seems more personable then Willie. Not sure if this is why the yankees won all those WS but it didnt seem to hurt either. I guess that easy-going attitude could also be construed as “not caring” in times of poor play but it just seems that Willie needs to strike a balance…

Joe talked like he just woke up from a nap, Willie talks like he’s coming down from a night of coke.

Let’s win or sweep the Nats and we can start gaining some real confidence…

Seriously, folks, those Philly fans this weekend are going to be rough– our guys are going to hear “7 in 17″ or “Chokers” or other similar fare. If we can get up a head of steam going into that, our guys can think and believe that they have turned the corner and that this is ‘08 and not ‘07.

  12. ghobot says:

haha this guy cant win. he shows frustration after a terrible loss on sunday, and he is getting told to calm down? guy will never win.

  13. K-Hern says:

off topic but, for everyone watching on tv, did anyone else hear that guy yelling at milledge….. “… throw it down the middle he sucks…” and “…. come slap me 5 now @$$hole….”

    it was clear as day

  14. metsmets17 says:

Last night was nice. Many people on here seemed to feel pretty good about the win. Of course there were some who were calling us happy fans kool-aid drinkers and homers. I guess not everyone can take it easy sometimes.

  15. gipper91375 says:

Speaking of Willie, why haven’t the results of the Willie job approval (last check it was at 40%) poll been posted?
