Note: Schneider’s New Mitt and Pass Balls
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 17, 2008 4:51 pm

Brian Schneider has allowed three passed balls this season, drawing criticism from fans and reporters since he was supposedly acquired for his stellar defense.

However, during an interview with WFAN earlier this week, Schneider explained that he is breaking in a new catcher’s mitt, and he has struggled to adjust.

In a post to Mets Today, Joe Janish posts and comments on Schneider’s remarks to SNY last night, regarding the new glove theory.

…i don’t know, man…this glove thing makes total sense, yet also sounds like total nonsenseboth may be true, actually…who knows

Well, Schneider did say that he was breaking in a new glove. (He also insisted he wasn’t saying it to make excuses.)

However, he also said that he threw out the new glove and went back to his old glove. Then, that evening, he committed another passed ball with his old glove.

Mainly, he seemed to be blaming it on not knowing the pitchers well enough, which seems much more plausible given his injury this spring and his overall lack of time with the staff.

WHO CARES? The guy is the best catcher we have ever had, he throws everyone out and the pitchers love him…stop trying to kill this guy. would you rather have that tiny roider back there who every pitcher hated?

The best catcher we’ve ever had? You get a pass on that if you’re under 30. Though even then you could argue that Alberto Castillo in the ’90s was as good a catcher as Schneider.

My brother is under 30 and he readily admits that Jerry Grote was the best defensive catcher the Mets ever had.

Thanks to ‘An Amazin Era’.

Hundley actually wasn’t bad . . . at least pre-suspicious power jump.

As Gary would say, this is an aberration.

Cohen said during last night’s telecast that two of Schneid’s PBs came with Heilman on the mound, and that Heilman uses two different sinkers; one that has regular vertical movement on righties, and one that tails in on lefties. Schneider did not know about this second sinker, so he’d call a sinker, and all the sudden have to adjust to lateral movement he didn’t know about. Now, this is something Heilman could have told him about before, but the injury in Spring limited the time he was catching these guys.

Schneider will be fine, non-story in my eyes, he still has to get used to all the movement from some of these pitchers. He’s throwing guys out though, which is real nice to see. He’s been great thus far.

It is frustrating, and a bit scary, when you see one of the best defensive catchers consistently dropping balls. That being said, he more than makes up for it by THROWING OUT ALMOST EVERY BASE STEALER. So, rock on, Schneider. Rock on.

Its clearly Willy’s, Delgado’s and Minaya’s fault. They should all know their jobs are on the line if another PB gets by him…

LOL, that is exactly what someone would post on the Mets.com boards :)

Remember what Casey said:

Every team needs a catcher so there’ll be someone to run after passed balls.

I know this sounds really weird, but on TV, from the center field camera, it almost looks as if he’s closing his eyes when he goes to catch balls sometimes. I need to watch some more to figure out if there’s anything to it. Check it out, Matty
