Blog: Who Is Claudio Vargas?
By Regis Courtemanche - Apr 17, 2008 2:02 pm

Marc Normandin at Mets Geek takes a deeper look at newly acquired RHP Claudio Vargas, who is currently working out in extended spring training in St. Lucie.

Normandin writes:

“He’s better than replacement level, but not by much…don’t expect him to beef up the back-end of the rotation anymore than the usual suspects over the long run.”

For his career, Vargas is 43-38 with a 4.95 ERA.

…the low-risk signing of vargas was a good contingency plan in case anyone else goes down or isn’t performing…i admittedly did not know much about vargas before the mets signed him, but hopefully we don’t need his services too often, especially if Nelson Figueroa remains successful…

…wow, did i really just say that…

We may be off to a so-so start, but one of the positives that jumps out at me is that our rotation fill-ins to this point have been a lot more successful than what we saw last year from the likes of Chan-Ho_Park, Jose Lima, Jason Vargas, etc.

Added to that is the fact that Nelson Figueroa is such a great story from the fan’s perspective. I really enjoy rooting for him, unlike last year when I just hoped our fill-ins could just keep it together for 5 innings.

If we can get 10 decent starts from figs, that’s fantastic, and it’ll someday be turned into a disney movie. Gotta root for that guy.

in other news, the phillies are tooling on the stros right now

Sounds like this guy needs to pitch from the stretch more. He sounds like a potential lights out reliever, 95 mph fastball and all.

Hey, where did the notes go stating how bad he is from the windup?

      • metsftw says:

“They like him even more when he pitches from the windup: in 300 at-bats, opposing offenses put together a .320/.376/.523 line. “

There it is! Thanks! Anyway, the Mets should spot start and use Vargas in the pen at times if/when he makes it up.

hey….if nothing else…you know what teams could really use Claudio Vargas right now…the Phils and Braves…sign all contingency plans Omar and keep them away from our foes.

PS. as of 4/17/08 is the Millege for Schneid/Church trade not incredible???? Schneider, it seems, has thrown out more guys already than Hundley, Piazza and LoDuca combined in all their Met years and pitchers love him and Ryan Church is our best defensive OF and one of our 3 best hitters so far.

    • Gasface77 says:

Church is our best defensive outfielder? Apparently you haven’t watched the guy we have in centerfield, who in my opinion, is one of our best defensive outfielders of all time.

    • zer09 says:

Are you actually judging this trade on (not even) 3 weeks into the season? I doubt Church will continue hitting .340 and Schneider has thrown out..what is it, 2 guys so far this year? Let’s not jump to conclusions. Besides, you can’t judge Milledge at 23 years old - judge him when he hits his prime - at 27…

do you really think that church is better than beltran? i’ll give you a chance to rephrase that.

Important outing for Figgy today….to come out a week after the high-emotion of his first Shea start and get into a “nice little rhythm” of just being a starting pitcher.
