Following last night’s 14–inning win over the Nationals, which completed a three-game sweep, Willie Randolph described the event as a, “Long, ugly game that turned out pretty.”
Randolph, continued on, saying the following about…
…Nelson Figueroa, who allowed two runs in seven innings…
“He pitched a great game. You have to tip your hat to the kid…he kept us in the game and did an outstanding job…Hats off to the young man.”
…the bullpen, which pitched seven scoreless innings…
“They were the glue tonight, they held us together…Bullpen was outstanding. Like I said, Joe Smith came in good enough, amd Sosa giving us some length…Our bullpen has been coming around nicely for us and we need to continue to get that type of support. We didn’t really overtax every one, so we should be ready for the weekend.”
…the game, the errors, etc…
Tagged Willie Randolph |“It was one of those bizarre kind of games, but one of those games you have to win. It would have made that bus trip to Philly tonight feel like 10 hours.”

Tagged SNY |Carlos Beltran did not start in last night’s game due to a stiff neck, however he struck out as a pinch hitter later in the night.
Beltran told reporters that, although he has been struggling with the stiff neck since Wednesday, he expects to play tonight.
…from what i understand, it’s the exact same knot under the shoulder blade, which rides up in to the side of the neck, that we all get from sitting hunched over at our computers all day…
…two words, carlos: TemperPedic and acupuncture…
In the Daily News, Adam Rubin recalls how Willie Randolph was disappointed with Beltran last year in Arizona, when he begged out of the final game in a series the team could have swept.
However, Beltran told reporters yesterday that Randolph had planned to give him a day off soon anyway, and did not express disappointment in yesterday’s absence.
Last night was a walk-off error, basically, and so Mets Walk-offs writes, ‘One man’s frustration is another man’s happiness,’ as he points out all the frustrating, yet happy, moments from last night’s win.
The Brooklyn Met Fan now calls Nelson Figueroa, ‘Brooklyn Fig.’
In a post to Mets Fever, Ed Ryan wonders if it will soon be time to discuss moving David Wright to first base.
In the New York Sun, Kevin Goldstein points out that, “Down the line, the Mets rivals will get more dangerous.”
The Mets defeated the Nationals by the score of 3 to 2 in 14 innings in Shea Stadium.

…well, i’d like to give the Mets credit for the win, but, in reality, the Nationals essentially gift-wrapped this game…twice…
…that said, Nelson Figueroa, Carlos Delgado and the Mets bullpen must slice up a game ball and share it, because they were all outstanding tonight…
…in his second start for the Mets, figueroa allowed two runs and three hits while striking out seven through seven innings…once again, he looked to be totally in control…
…in the eighth inning, down one, with two outs, and the game essentially on the line, Ronnie Belliard coughed up a routine ground ball, David Wright then drew a head’s up walk, allowing Carlos Delgado to rip a single to right field, as church hustled hard around the bases to tie the game…huge, huge hit by delgado, who otherwise was 1 for 4 on the night…but, he got that one hit, at that one time, and good for him…
…the bullpen then came on and was lights-out amazing…Aaron Heilman, Billy Wagner, Duaner Sanchez, Pedro Feliciano and Joe Smith, and especially Jorge Sosa, pitched seven scoreless innings allowing just five base runners while striking out seven…
…in the 14th inning, ugh, yes, the 14th inning, Nationals RHP John Hanrahan, who was probably ‘bucking for a promotion,’ more or less gave the game to the Mets…and you know what, i don’t even care…i’ll take it…a win is a win…he let up a single to Damion Easley, who advanced to second on a wild pitch by hanrahan, easley then advanced to third on a throwing error to second, by hanrahan, and then scored on a wild pitch by, yep, you guessed it, none other than hanrahan…
…it wasn’t pretty, but after 14 innings, it rarely is…
The Mets face the Phillies on Friday in Philadelphia, with Johan Santana squaring off against Cole Hamels.
…yes, it’s a line from Fletch…
