postGame: Mets 3 Nationals 2 (14 innings)
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 18, 2008 3:45 am

The Mets defeated the Nationals by the score of 3 to 2 in 14 innings in Shea Stadium.

For a recap and boxscore, go to SNY.tv.

well, i’d like to give the Mets credit for the win, but, in reality, the Nationals essentially gift-wrapped this game…twice…

…that said, Nelson Figueroa, Carlos Delgado and the Mets bullpen must slice up a game ball and share it, because they were all outstanding tonight…

…in his second start for the Mets, figueroa allowed two runs and three hits while striking out seven through seven innings…once again, he looked to be totally in control…

…in the eighth inning, down one, with two outs, and the game essentially on the line, Ronnie Belliard coughed up a routine ground ball, David Wright then drew a head’s up walk, allowing Carlos Delgado to rip a single to right field, as church hustled hard around the bases to tie the game…huge, huge hit by delgado, who otherwise was 1 for 4 on the night…but, he got that one hit, at that one time, and good for him…

…the bullpen then came on and was lights-out amazing…Aaron Heilman, Billy Wagner, Duaner Sanchez, Pedro Feliciano and Joe Smith, and especially Jorge Sosa, pitched seven scoreless innings allowing just five base runners while striking out seven…

…in the 14th inning, ugh, yes, the 14th inning, Nationals RHP John Hanrahan, who was probably ‘bucking for a promotion,’ more or less gave the game to the Mets…and you know what, i don’t even care…i’ll take it…a win is a win…he let up a single to Damion Easley, who advanced to second on a wild pitch by hanrahan, easley then advanced to third on a throwing error to second, by hanrahan, and then scored on a wild pitch by, yep, you guessed it, none other than hanrahan…

…it wasn’t pretty, but after 14 innings, it rarely is

The Mets face the Phillies on Friday in Philadelphia, with Johan Santana squaring off against Cole Hamels.

yes, it’s a line from Fletch…

Man, I thought I was up early….only because I have too..

Too bad I could not listen to that game past the 11th…

Lately I feel like I jinx the team everytime I listen to the game.. They start losing…

Turn off MLB radio.. they win… what gives?

Did Mex do that post game snickering again? Why does he snicker and smile when Cohen starts talking?

Makes me think something is going on under that table..

I credit the Mets for that win. Young buck pitched a solid game other than that longball. Their bullpen held their ground.

Good base runnin’ by Damion, and the others (capitalized on their mistakes).

    Nats slipped, no gift wrapping..

Gift wrapping is what Glavine did during the last game of 07′

it’s rare that I go in to a series thinking the Mets need to sweep, but this is one that I thought they needed to.
it was against an inferiro team at home and they had 2 big question marks in their rotation pitching.
ugly win or not, the first 2 games were good wins and they got the breaks on an ugly game.
if you think about it, all the Nats offense could muster for production was Johnson crushing a mistake pitch. although the Mets got 2 runs on breaks, the Nats only produced on a mistake. good game for the pitching staff.

if you really think about it, all 3 of the Mets runs came on breaks. Church’s double could have been caught (it bounced out of the guy’s mitt), then Church got on because of a 2 out error in the 8th, and then Easley advanced to second, third, AND scored on bad pitches/throws. Last night was a LUCKY win. And guess what, I couldn’t be happier? Last year they had no luck whatsoever. The best teams do get lucky from time to time. Now they just need to go into Philadelphia and sweep the hell out of them.

Considering we gave away that Sunday game to Milwaukee last weekend, I’ll take a gift-wrapped game last night considering how well we pitched, and honestly, how well the Nats pitched against us.

Matt, can’t believe you didn’t mention the Nats had Easley dead to rights stealing second, but Belliard (I think it was Belliard) dropped a perfect throw from Nieves.

14 innings? That ain’t nothing. Did you see how long the Pads-Rockies game went? 22 innings! Wow, now that is epic.

My daughter woke up around 4ish, so to allow my wife to sleep a bit longer, I fed my daughter, and as I was readying the bottle, I flipped on the computer. Checked MLB.com and couldn’t believe that that game was still going on . . . and it was the bottom of the 22nd.

      Talk about marathons!

    • Another Matt says:

Yikes… did they do the 21st inning stretch?

      • Dingo19 says:

They showed them doing the 21st inning stretch on Sportscenter.

Oh and Figgy’s behind the back catch was #3 on the top 10 plays of the day – should have been #1.

        • gomets6091 says:

that was an awesome play. It’s been a small-sample size, but so far I feel like Figgy’s a darn good fielder. Having guys like him & Johan can only help the rest of the defense out.

What I thought was great about this game was Willie’s management.

Made (almost) all the right moves at just the right times, and certainly out-managed Manny Acta (who didn’t bring out the lefty for Delgado the AB he tied the game, and called the hit&run that the Mets predicted for the Kearns pickoff).

The only thing I’d have done different would’ve been to bring in Show instead of Feliciano to face Johnson. I’d rather have Feliciano that Show pitching against righties if we run out of bullpen – which would have happened if we didn’t score in the 14th.

    • gomets6091 says:

totally agree with you. The Feliciano/Show thing didn’t hurt them, but it could have, but other than that, Willie was great. He outmanaged “Acta the Savior” this whole series. Of course, you don’t see many people on here talking about that. But just wait until one of our relievers so much as gives up a run against the Phillies…the “fire willies” will be back out in force.

  8. HoJoWright says:

First SWEEP of the year! Keep it the momentum going. Johan tonight, can’t wait

  9. Innis_2_winnis says:

Thank you Joel Hammerhands…you are my new favorite National. Every team needs a little karm now and then…as many bad calls, bad hops, and LOBs as we’ve had of late, it is nice to see the kwan swing our way again (as it did when we played the phils).

Can’t say enough about Figgy and the bullpen last night.

Also, although Supernova can’t hit a curveball to save his life (not that he hit fastballs well either), he called a good game.

Now, recenter dear lads for a big matchup weekend, and if you fellas have to hit the ball at someone, may it be Eric Bruntlett.

    • Deadpanwalking says:

Seriously, anytime my girlfriend and I see “Hammer-hands” come into the game we break out the bubbly. It’s a guaranteed run (or two … or three.)
