Quotes: Willie’s Post-Game Remarks
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 18, 2008 7:21 am

Following last night’s 14–inning win over the Nationals, which completed a three-game sweep, Willie Randolph described the event as a, “Long, ugly game that turned out pretty.”

Randolph, continued on, saying the following about…

Nelson Figueroa, who allowed two runs in seven innings…

“He pitched a great game.  You have to tip your hat to the kid…he kept us in the game and did an outstanding job…Hats off to the young man.”

…the bullpen, which pitched seven scoreless innings…

“They were the glue tonight, they held us together…Bullpen was outstanding.  Like I said, Joe Smith came in good enough, amd Sosa giving us some length…Our bullpen has been coming around nicely for us and we need to continue to get that type of support.  We didn’t really overtax every one, so we should be ready for the weekend.”

…the game, the errors, etc…

“It was one of those bizarre kind of games, but one of those games you have to win.  It would have made that bus trip to Philly tonight feel like 10 hours.”

I really liked the way Wille managed the bullpen last night… he really seemed on top of everything. I also liked that he took Feliciano out after 1 batter because he walked the batter he was supposed to get out (left-handed ) with 4 pitches. I think it sends a message to Feliciano… he has a bad habit of walking the first batter he faces.

I missed that part of the game. I’m a little surprised he took Feliciano out so soon seeing how it looked like it might go extra innings.

The Padres-Rockies game went 22 innings last night! I don’t know what Willie would have done had the Mets game gone on longer. There’s no way Show could have lasted into the 22nd inning. That’s the thing when Mets fans get on Willie sometimes for leaving in relievers like Show in for more than a batter or two. He always has to be managing with extra-inning games in mind. As well as the need to have a long man ready to go every single day in case a starter can’t last more than a few innings.

When they walked Wright and Delgado to get to the pitchers spot … and I saw Willie pinch hit for Sosa … I turned to my girlfriend and said, “uh oh … I really hope Schneider gets a hit here because if he doesn’t, we’re in trouble”.

About 5 seconds later, wild pitch. Then I exhaled. Phew!!

I thought last night’s game was very well managed on our side. Less so for the Nats (think erasing Kearns when the Mets sniffed out the hit&run).

The only thing I’d have changed would’ve been to bring in Show instead of Feliciano. If I’m forced to use one of them for a couple of innings later, I’d rather it be Feliciano.

But hey, Willie made a double-switch, didn’t leave a lefty to pitch to righties unnecessarily, rolled the dice pinch hitting with Schneider – and, perhaps most importantly, won.

      I like it :)

    ALERT…ALERT…

Matt, I can’t believe this doesn’t have it’s own post (yet)!

    Rubin:

Pedro Martinez started throwing on flat ground last week , but Mets insiders suggested the pitcher’s claim of returning in two weeks is too optimistic. …

    • Another Matt says:

I’m telling you, he’s gonna make sure Mike Hampton doesn’t come back before he does.

I’d tell him to chill, we all know Hampton’s gonna hurt himself again before getting back to the majors – again.

    • hyperion4 says:

I believe the Mets announced that Pedro has been throwing uphill and hasn’t yet advanced to throwing on flat ground.

  3. Old Backstop says:

I was at Shea last night, here are a few observations:

    - I didn’t hear the boo birds on 2-3 spots where I was worried I would (Beltran’s strikeout with RISP, for example)

    - The stadium gave Delgado a very nice ovation after his game tying hit. It lasted into the following at-bat.

    - Nelson Figueora was fantastic. Aside from one bad inning, he was dominant. I suppose it is the Nationals, though.

    - Fans are really merciless on Lastings. They boo him as if he left the Mets for money or something. Very unwarranted. You can also tell that Lastings is letting it get to him – he’s trying way too hard. Last night he went from 1st to 3rd on a groundout, which is foolish considering he was inches away from making the final out at 3rd base.

    - Having Castillo, Cassanova and the pitcher as the bottom 3 in your lineup is pretty bad in regards to getting the ball out of the infield.

    - Having Church #2 has been paying dividends. His strikeout rate is higher than you like, but his hitting, slugging and ability to work a walk matters a whole lot more.

I wondered why they moved Pagan out of the second spot, he was good there as well.

      But, hey it’s working!!!!

      • Another Matt says:

Easy… break up the lefties a little, although Pagan should almost be considered lefty since his production batting righty is almost low enough that he should give up switch hitting.

    • miker94 says:

yeah, castillo, casanova and pitcher spot is not so great. wow, can casanova touch a ball?

  4. JSC1968 says:

I’ve talked all season to you guys, about wanting young solid pitchers at the back of the rotation.

Who knew it would come in the form of Pelfrey and Figgy?!

I’m very impressed with Figueroa thus far, if he and Big Pelf can keep it going it will make things interesting when Pedro does come back, which at this point in time I hope is mid-May to June.

I want Pedro as fresh as he can be for the 2nd half of the season.

    • mikey_FF says:

I remember watching Figeuroa on tv last winter, while he was pitching in the winter leagues. I was impressed with him then and I’m even more impressed with him now. The guy can pitch.

    • backinbusiness says:

are you aware that figgy is 33, a.k.a. almost Pedro’s age?
I love him too and forget that he isn’t 21.

      • JSC1968 says:

But he isn’t a 42 year old Aaron Sele, or a broken down-3 Tommy John surgery havin’-can’t break glass with a hammer-Brian Lawrence/Dave Williams.

In terms of actual MLB time, Figgy is practically a rookie, though he has played everywhere else on the planet.

        Lima time? Not this time.

    • Another Matt says:

Figgy isn’t exactly young, but I’ll still happily take every inning :)

He’s been awesome… he threw one bad pitch last night, that was it.

And I’m hoping that Pelfrey’s quote after his last start means that the mental light has really gone on in his head. He’s obviously a long way from it right now, but he does have the potential to be a Brandon Webb-type pitcher, and last outing gave us a glimpse of what could be.

  5. Mister Koo says:

I must say it is nice to have a fill in starter who is actually dependable (so far anyway). Nelson Figueroa has been so much better than the absolute garbage we had to deal with the past few years. Imagine if we had him last year instead of Brian garbage disposal Lawrence?

  6. metsfansberealistic says:

maybe at some point, whoever is responsible for the ‘Depth Chart’ at mets.com will add Figueroa to the starting rotation

    hello, anybody home?

  7. C Dubb says:

Yeah, someone want to tell Willie that Figueroa is 33? I don’t think “kid” and “young man” are really appropriate.

    • JSC1968 says:

He is a babe in actual MLB time.

But, Figgy does one thing that I absolutely love …

HE THROWS FIRST PITCH STRIKES AND GETS AHEAD OF HITTERS!!!!

What a breath of fresh air.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

“Yeah, someone want to tell Willie that Figueroa is 33? I don’t think “kid” and “young man” are really appropriate.”

It is on this team. :)

  8. the_other_matt says:

Can we start referring to the Nats as the “Fats?” I mean seriously, how do they expect to compete when they look like a Nutri-System “Before” ad?

    Ray King –> Fat
    Dmitri Young –> Fat
    Ronnie Belliard –> Fat
    Nick Johnson –> Fat
    Johnny Estrada –> Fat

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

If Nick Johnson didn’t have so many health issues, he could be on my team anytime.
