Read: Rubin on Spygate in Philly
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 18, 2008 9:45 am

In the Daily News, Adam Rubin explains how the Mets contacted MLB last season to investigate the Phillies for what was perceived to be stealing signs and relaying them to hitters.

i’m betting this has everything to do with the Philly Phanatic, who looks guilty of every crime known to manjerk

Rubin writes, “Randolph confirmed the Mets would be on guard during this weekend’s three-game series in Philly, but surmised that last year’s attention probably has resulted in an end to any questionable tactics.”

Speaking of the Phillies, according to MLB.com, Jimmy Rollins will not play tonight against the Mets while he attends his uncle’s funeral.

    Spygate Redux…

    Those evil cheaters

I want to fistpump Rollins not playing but I can’t. I’d rather send my condolences. Hopefully his family is doing alright.

    • stellar says:

      agreed

    • gomets6091 says:

ya. If he wasn’t playing b/c of his ankle, I’d be happy, but not b/c of a death in the family.

    • Gasface77 says:

Yep. Am I the only one who finds it hard to actually “hate” the players on the Phillies. I mean, other than Meyers. Rollins, Utley, Howard….I can’t hate these guys. I actually hated the players on the Braves in the 90’s and early 00’s and actually still do.

      • rogasm says:

Myers, Hamels, and Rollins are easy for me to dislike. The rest seem like and are good guys..

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Utley is an aloof jerk, from what I’ve heard. Victorino is a bit of a showboat. Burrell is supposedly an arse, too, but I’d imagine he isn’t sufficiently mentally sophisticated to distinguish “self” from “other,” so I’ll give him a pass. I don’t like any of them. I guess Howard seems like a good guy, but I just can’t stand his game. Moyer’s probably good people.

        • njmatt says:

I hate how Utley leans into every inside pitch? Did you see the replay of that 9th inning against the Astros? What happens right in the middle of it, Utley who is already standing over the plate LEANS into a pitch that isn’t even that far inside.

Can an ump grow a pair and call him out as the rules clearly state he should be.

        • Slob says:

Utley might stop leaning into pitches if he lost some teeth.

        • Another Matt says:

Yeah, Hamels seems like a real arrogant DB

        • rogasm says:

Howard is one of the best guys in the world. I have known him and been good friends with him from grade school through college. We played abll together the whole time. His nice guy, laid back demeanor is exactly the way he is all the time.

        • stjoehawk says:

“Can an ump grow a pair and call him out as the rules clearly state he should be.”

Actually, the rules clearly state that if the batter is hit by a pitched ball that was in the strike zone when it touched the batter, it should be called a strike, regardless of if the batter tried to avoid the ball. If it was outside of the strike zone when it hit the batter, and the batter doesn’t try to get out of the way, it’s a ball. (MLB Rule 6.08(b), from MLB.com).

Although I do agree that the ump should make the right call (based on the rules) in that situation.

      • johnstearns says:

Agreed. Victorino, even. They’re gamers — it means a lot to beat them.

That said, no boxes of bon bons until November.

      • fyffem says:

even Utley and Howard seem like decent guys…the only thing I find objectionable about them is that they’re too damn good. Rollins and Myers I don’t respect because they run their mouths too much and it’s still questionable if they’re good or not. Rollins DID NOT deserve the MVP last year – that was complete and utter BS. I could think of at least a half dozen more deserving players. Two of his team mates were more deserving.

        Fielder
        Braun
        Wright
        Holliday
        Utley
        Chipper

        • Gasface77 says:

Totally in agreement about the MVP comment. I don’t think Rollins runs his mouth in a bad way though. I think he is outspoken, but classy about it. Meyers is just a dirt.

        • kandiman says:

Hate to say it but I think Rollins’ prediction as the team to beat and then going out and delivering on it helped his candidacy for MVP as much as his play.

Holliday should have been MVP IMO

        • Tidewater says:

Rollins didn’t deserve the MVP, that’s true. But “it’s still questionable if they’re good or not,” is crazy. Rollins is stupid good, dude. Maybe not MVP good, but good. And Myers is good at domestic violence.

        • fyffem says:

OK…maybe I should have said, “That good.” He’s certainly above average but I don’t even rate him as the 3rd best SS in the NL. Personally, I’d rather have:

          1. Reyes
          2. Ramirez
          3. Tulowitzki

        • gomets6091 says:

he’s better than Tulo, and over the past 162 games, he’s been better than Reyes. He’s also 5 years older and smack dab in the middle of his prime. But right now, he’s a better player than Jose, and close to Hanley. I hate the guy, but let’s give him his due. And besides, 4 of the 5 best shortstops in baseball are in the NL, and maybe even more than that, so it’s not so bad if he’s only the 3rd or 4th best SS in the NL.

        • Another Matt says:

No way is he better than Tulo…

Tulo was in his rookie season last year, put up almost as good offensive numbers as Rollins (who had by far his best year with the bat of a 7-year career), and completely outplayed him on defense (not even remotely close)

He’d make a better DH than Tulo, but SS is a position where your glove really matters, so totally ignoring defence is BS. And I know you’re totally ignoring defence because you reckon Hanley’s a benchmark standard.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Rollins is yet another player who magically started to be recognized for his defense when he began to hit. Wright benefits from the same phenomenon. Both are adequate, but not great.

Everyone ready to take over Citzen’s Bank Park!!!! I hope to see the Angel Wave. Let’s Go Mets!!!!!

  5. Mr.Spock says:

Without Jimmy Rollins, the mets have to beat the Phillies…. they have to.

    • Steal Home Jose! says:

They have to hit Hamels first. Most of the Mets have had some success against him, pretty much everybody but David Wright.

      • Mr.Spock says:

I read this morning that Hamels has a sick/devastating changeup like Santana…. it should be really interesting.

        • Gasface77 says:

I was watching the Phillies/Houston game yesterday and the announcers were pumping up the Hamels/Santana matchup. They kept saying how these are two of the best pitchers in the game and it could be a long night for hitters and blah blah blah. Hamels couldn’t wipe Santana’s ass….they need to relax.

        • gameball says:

Everytime a classic pitching matchup gets hyped we wind up with a 9-7 game. Meanwhile, last night we saw a real pitchers’ duelbetween a rook and a retread.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Yes — Hamels’ changeup was called one of the nastiest pitches seen from a young pitcher in years.

        • stellar says:

In 22 IP this year, Hamels has given up 11 hits and 7 walks (for a 0.82 WHIP) and a 0.82 ERA. He has struck out 15.

In 20.2 IP this year, Santana has given up 16 hits and 4 walks (for a 0.97 WHIP) and a 3.05 ERA. He has struck out 18.

To say that Hamels couldn’t wipe Santana’s ass is just ignorant and stupid.

        • Gasface77 says:

When Hamels wins two Cy Young awards while pitching in the American League, then maybe I’ll let him enter the bathroom while Santana sits on his throne. Until then, small sample sizes of 2 or three games does nothing for me.

        • Tidewater says:

Gasface, nobody is saying that he’s better than Santana, but Hamels is a very good pitcher. Your crass description of him proves your ignorance.

        • Mr.Spock says:

“nobody is saying that he’s better than Santana but Hamels is a very good pitcher”….. Exactly my point.

        • Tidewater says:

yes, I was agreeing with you and disagreeing with gasface, which is why I began my post with, “Gasface,”

        • Mr.Spock says:

Yeah I know… I wanted to emphasize that point to “Gasface”…..

        • Tidewater says:

          Oh, cool!

  6. Mr.Spock says:

his ERA is better than Santana’s now…. hopefully it will be a really good game…

    • gomets6091 says:

Nelson Figueroa and Mike Pelfrey’s ERAs are better than Santana’s right now too, doesn’t mean they are better pitchers than he is. Hamels is good, but I don’t even know that he’s one of the top 10 pitchers in the NL right now.

  7. fyffem says:

A couple well-placed fastballs in the ribs should discourage that nonsense…

  8. Steal Home Jose! says:

Rollins Injury…I’ve had it in my mind that it happened after we kept trying to pick him off 2nd base. Has anybody heard that this was the cause, or heard if it was something else?

    • domosnacks5 says:

That’s what it was, he had that akward half-slide back into second and rolled his ankle the pickoff attempt before the single he scored

this this has to show some heart & stomach against the illies.

  10. hanesdu2 says:

    Pat Burrell is a scumbag.

I went to school in Philly..I had my nights out at the bar where Pat “the bat” was trying to get with girls in bathrooms – I went to school with girls that he has been inappropriate towards.

He walks to the dugout between innings with his eyes glued to the fans above the dugout to see if there are any girls in the area..i heard that from a friend, and i was at a game and actually SAW it for myself.

I can’t stand him, Meyers, Victorino or Rollins.

I like Utley Howard and Hamels..even tho Cole can’t seem to execute a bean pitch. See: Jose Reyes at bat ‘07 (threw the ball completely behind him..)

  11. metsfanmurph says:

I said last year that I felt the Phillies and Nationals had Lo Duca’s signs. The Nationals took alot of tough sliders in the last 6 games against the Mets. I also found it odd that the Nationals offense was tremendous against the Mets and fizzeled in the next three games against the Phillies. Who knows maybe I am just paranoid and bitter.

    • CitizenSnips says:

Nationals would make sense considering Acta, though that’s not to say LoDuca didn’t change his signals.
