Note: An Apple, or The Apple
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 21, 2008 10:30 am

According to Mets VP of Biz Ops Dave Howard, as quoted in the Daily News, “There will be some sort of apple at Citi Field…Whether it’s the same one or not, that’s something we’re still weighing.”

Darryl Strawberry, when asked if likes the the Apple, as quoted in the rpeort:

“Love it…It’s the Big Apple, you know?…That Apple has always been special to me – it means you’ve done something good.”

like i have said before, though, speaking only for myself, i don’t want AN apple, i want THE apple…otherwise, what’s the pointalso, for what it’s worth, Citi Field has constructed a massive, concrete canister to house the new apple, and i have heard people in television, from a few places, complain that this structure will kill any chance for the standard, center field camera angle we are all used to

also, Save the Apple loves the apple, as well, as they continue thier effort to, well, save the apple

I like The Apple, but man, that thing’s in bad shape. I’d prefer a nice new one with our nice new digs and keeping the old one somewhere on property.

    • zer09 says:

I don’t understand what the fascination with the current apple is. It is really REALLY banged up and disgustingly ugly. There’s no reason why that thing shouldn’t go into recycling and a nice new one should take its place. This should have been done years ago. I’m all about history and memories, but I’m sure that if there’s an apple rising out of center field in Citi, and it’s red, and looks like a..well…apple, then I don’t see how anyone would ever complain. Isn’t the whole point to have the same thing as we do now – the apple rising after a home run? Who cares if it’s the same apple or not…

      • Slob says:

Are you crazy? Who cares if its ugly and dinged up? It’s the Apple. It’s part of the family. You don’t recycle your grandma because she’s ugly and dinged up, do you? Besides, any new apple is likely to be covered in some crappy advertising, which is always uglier than any dent or ding.

        • zer09 says:

Why don’t we take the escalators and the seats as well? They’re part of the family too….it’s a dead argument…

      • Deadpanwalking says:

Banged up and ugly? Like the Red Sox’s helmets (and their faces for that matter)? I kind of like that idea. You’re right, we should keep the old apple.

    • rM teM says:

You know that liberty bell thing the phillies have?
I can see some kind if apple that’s big and lights
up when a homer is hit. The apple we have now
is a piece of junk. It probably won’t survive the move
anyway, it’s made of plywood and fiberboard.

  2. mackey_sassers_arm says:

Where exactly did all of those dents on the apple come from? I watch and/or go to anearly every home game and can’t recall that apple ever being hit.

    • ravi3 says:

lol its from crappy paper mache

I’m fine with the old apple so long as they refurbish it…the thing is in abad shape…If it really can’t be restored, I’d prefer a new one, however, I’d like it to be the same as what we have now….I don’t want an apple that has extra bells and whistles and such.

    • MrMcD says:

      Mostly BP I would guess.

  3. Tidewater says:

I don’t know about anyone else, but I love the apple because of how remarkably stupid it is. And the more dented and awful it looks, the better. A new apple would be all glitzed out probably, and that is so not the point.

That apple, or no apple, I say.

    • zer09 says:

You’re like my grandfather who keeps driving his ‘85 Cutlas Sierra because “it’s his Cutlas Sierra”….just because you’ve had something for a long time doesn’t mean something better can’t take it’s place. Now only if I could convince gramps to dump the old can and get a honda…

      • Tidewater says:

I would imagine your gramps doesn’t think of his cutlass as campy.

I laughed at that thing when they first put it in and I’ve been laughing at it ever since. A new one wouldn’t be as pathetic, so therefore it wouldn’t be as funny.

        • zer09 says:

I’d rather go for classy/flashy vs. funny, but reading all the comments, the general consensus is with me.

        • Tidewater says:

Who f-ing cares what the general consensus is? Go with flashy and jazzy then. I was merely expressing an opinion.

        • zer09 says:

I’m not disagreeing with your opinion – have it all you like. I just doubt that the apple was put in there to make people laugh…as a matter of fact, i don’t think i’ve ever seen anyone laugh at it, and i come to the games pretty often…

        • Deadpanwalking says:

          Jazzy?

        • Tidewater says:

I know it wasn’t put in there to make people laugh. Ed Wood didn’t make Plan 9 to make people laugh, either, but sometimes things are so awful and ridiculous they become campy or kitschy. That, I think, is what the apple is. Certainly nobody ever thought that thing was cool, did they?

  4. Xavier22 says:

Hmmm…a paper mache (cr)apple first used in 1980 in a desperate attempt to get people to Shea, or a decent centerfield shot of the game?

    Decisions, decisions….

    • MacD81 says:

Yeah, I agree. I like the apple and all, but a good game presentation on TV is more important to me.

  5. redmarauder07 says:

We definitely need a new apple. The old apple is falling apart!

Bring the old apple to the new stadium would be like buying a brand new car and saying “well the old engine was good to me, and it has such sentimental value that I can’t let it go…I’m going to install the old engine in the new car.”

Maybe the old apple can be displayed in some Mets hall of fame or museum, but it’s useful days ended long ago.

    Bring on a new apple!

    • mikeyrad says:

I agree! How about a new multimedia apple that not only rises, but plays music, shows videos, etc.?

      • gomets6091 says:

oh god, please NO….I’m fine with a new apple, but can it please just be an apple, no bells and whistles. Who needs that junk. You don’t happen to be the guy who always starts the wave, do you?

  6. anditsouttahere says:

man i understand everyone’s attachment to this apple, but for real, its an eye soar. with a state of the art stadium going up, we should only expect a state of the art apple. look at the bell at citizen bank park. that thing moves and lights up, why not go for an insane visual effect, like something right out of time square. i agree with what was said above, keep it as a memory, somewhere on the property, just as long as its not in the rotunda, cus thats completely dedicated to a guy who didnt even play for the mets.

  7. keithc says:

Looks like a good explanation for that behind the plate angle SNY’s brought out this year (and that Darling and Hernandez seem to prefer to the standard shot).

    • zer09 says:

I love that new angle they have – the batter’s eye view is incredible. Watching SNY games in HD on the big screen really puts you in the action with that angle. You can actually see the exact break on the pitch and get a good idea of the speed on it too. I love it, keep it up SNY!

  8. Dan says:

Matt, I don’t understand what you mean about the apple canister having anything to do with the CF camera angle.

First of all, the cameras aren’t in straightaway center like the apple will be, they’re off towards left field. Also, the cameras are/will be up higher, so even if they were lined up with the apple, it wouldn’t make a difference.

  9. Zoe says:

I won’t be upset if they have the old apple, but I would prefer a shiny new one to go with the new stadium. Won’t the old apple look shabbier in comparison to its new digs?

    • Ceetar says:

new apple for a new park. It only makes sense. We should be appreciative that they are even keeping the apple.

I can’t imagine they won’t find a way to figure out a center field camera angle either. They haven’t built the Apple yet, could even build the camera into it.

  10. Nutz15 says:

Let’s adorn the new digs with a piece of crap at the main focal point — seems logical.

I can’t believe there’s an actual inkling of thinking that the Mets will take this thing to the new ballpark.

    That would be a disgrace.

  11. gdfther412 says:

At first i was all for keeping the old fella, but im starting to like the idea of a new one.

  12. Bengals55 says:

Put the old apple in a public area where we can all take pictures with it. Build a new one using state of the art technology for a couple million dollars.

  13. be_dot says:

Find somewhere different to put the apple then. I would hate to have some cheesy digital apple bounce across a tv for every Mets home run. It shouldn’t be this difficult.

  14. be_dot says:

One last thing, how excited will everyone be when they build a new apple with a teenie tiny mets logo, and a GIGANTIC Taco Bell, Lays potato chips, Viagra etc. logo on it? Then everytime the mets hit a homerun, instead of showing the crowd, or the mets celebrating, the cameras can show the apple and say “There’s another Taco Bell homerun, Gorditas are a dollar for a limited time.”

  15. twassel says:

Apple, shmapple. I want to talk camera angles. The centerfield view is great, but I really like the behind-the-batter view. It brings me back to my youth, and also gives you a better view of the game. The camera can follow the ball that’s hit rather than have to switch cameras.

Also, the announcers often rely on the centerfield camera as gospel regarding balls and strikes. They need to become acquainted with a little concept known as parallax. The centerfield camera does not give a true strike zone read.

  16. twassel says:

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil’s might,
    Beware my power…Green Lantern’s light!

But no, I meant parallax error: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax

  17. MrMetsLuvChild says:

The apple is nice, but where is the statue of The Franchise, Tom Seaver? Jackie Robinson Rotunda is great but can we have something that actually belongs to The Mets? He is the only legit Hall of Famer we’ve ever had.

  18. Felix the Cat says:

I’m a 44 year old diehard Mets fan and I hate the apple. I’ve always found it to be an eyesore and am embarrassment. If they must have an apple (which seems to have been decided) then I beg of Mets ownership to please have a brand new apple. At least then it will no longer be an eyesore, just an embarrassment.

Hey Matt, How about a poll with the following options:
    1) No apple
    2) The old apple
    3) brand new shiny apple

    • tonypvteye says:

Plus are they gonna upgrade the Yorx sound system for
the new stadium and/or halt the awful tinny noise?

    • Ceetar says:

There is nothing embarrassing about a Big Apple in Citi Field.

A poll would be pointless, as it’s been virtually decided already. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re just pretending to consider moving the old apple so they don’t anger anybody.

  19. KFS says:

Is it just me or does the Citi Field logo remind you of the Enron logo?

  20. WrightOn says:

    Read my…fingers:

    NEW apple please.
