Note: Sleep is not an Excuse
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 22, 2008 8:07 am

The Mets did not get in to Chicago from Philadelphia until 4 am on Sunday morning.

David Wright, when asked if the late arrival played a role in the team losing on Monday to the Cubs, said:

“We got in late, but no excuses.  We got shut down by a good pitching staff, and they got some big hits.  Every body has to travel and get in late every once in a while, but Carlos Zambrano is the excuse for us losing tonight.”

Willie Randolph, on the same subject, talking after the game:

“No, no excuses for that.  It’s early in the season.  Guys got their rest, I’m sure they did.  Will be OK.”

…what a bizarre lifestyle, when you think about it…as wright told Kevin Burkhardt on air before the game, they get sleep whenever they can find it – be it on the plane, at the hotel, on the bus, etc…it’s part of the job…that said, wright pointed out that if a player is unable to get excited about playing in wrigley, ‘They should check their pulse,’ which is what a fan wants to hear

Making teams play those 8pm sunday games without an offday on monday is unfair. And because espn only carries the better teams its an unfairly distributed unfair situation.

That said, its only one day and it shouldnt carry over. The main culprit in the team being tired is the overuse and ineffectiveness of the pen the last five games. They could use a complete game or 8 inning start somewhere in the next two games…

The Phillies had to fly all the way to Colorado. Didn’t seem to bother them

Why is this tagged as “David Wells”? haha…typo..

I mean, everything plays a factor, if only a small one, Whether’s it’s travel time(and this has gotten so much better than it was 70 years ago) headaches, or more mundane things like their ipod breaking, their kid is sick or their jersey shrunk in the wash, but none of them are excuses.
