Read: Alou and Pagan
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 22, 2008 8:27 am

As noted yesterday, Moises Alou was 3 for 3 in a minor-league rehab game over the weekend.

He will play again today for Single-A St. Lucie.

Team officials told reporters yesterday that Alou could return as early as this weekend against the Braves.

…for what it’s worth, last weekend, it sounded nearly certain that he would be back by friday…now, it’s as soon as this weekend…which sounds like a bit of a back track…not that it matters…it’s probably better spoken this way…

…when alou returns, it will bump Angel Pagan from the starting lineup…and understandably so…however, if willie is wise, he gets Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church some time off, while keeping pagan’s .300–hitting bat in the lineup…he has at least one hit in seven of their last 10 games…i understand that alou must get his job back…i mean, he’s alou, and he hit .341 last season…but, pagan is hitting too and that should not be buried

Pagan did not play yesterday, in his return to Chicago.  However, Randolph told reporters that Pagan will be in today’s lineup.

In a post to his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin transcribed a Q&A Pagan had with reporters prior to last night’s game.

For more on Pagan, read David Lennon in Newsday.

Only somewhat related, Endy (filling in for Pagan) was swinging the bat quite well. He’s been looking like the old Endy lately since his opposite field slash a few nights ago. Last night he drove one off the wall for a double. Sure, only in Wrigley with the wind blowing right to left, but I will take it ;)

With Pagan and Chavez, the Mets may have the most versatile 4/5 outfielders in baseball. Certainly the best defensively.

Absolutely. Pagan had a hot start, but it’s time for him to return to the bench. I’ll light a candle for Alou’s health…..

Light a candle for his health??? Personally i would stay with Pagan, he has speed, a good bat and great defence. He is in a slump, it hap[pens to the bets of them. If you put someone on the bench everythime they went into a slump, it wouldn’t be very good for baseball.

Beltran is .120/.214/.240 for a .454 OPS over the last 7 days. I’d like to see him get some rest too. By the way, at what point do we officially start to worry about Beltran? He’s batting .175/.298/.200 (.498 OPS) against righties vs. .304/.467/.696 (1.162 OPS) against lefties. It’s good to see he’s crushing lefties, but he’s gonna face a lot more righties over the course of the season, and it would be nice to see him start hitting them.

Yep.. This is the perfect time for Alou to come back. Another week of hitting like this and fans will start booing Pagan!

I agree the team OF depth is solid with Pagan stepping up and Chavez getting back to health

it only makes things better cause we all want to see a everyday lineup of Alou , Beltran and Church Buuuuuuuuuuut Mosies will need alot of rest to stay healthy, Carlos always bangs up his knee a bit so the occasional rest is important and although he is doing Grrreat Church can rest vs some leftes in favor of Pagan

This also allows Easley to stick tp back up IF mainy, he is older and it’s a better spot for him instead of running around the OF

What’s up with Marlon Anderson, doing crappy in the PH department right now……..eeek

oh and let’s get Castro back in a week so he can some starts vs lefties and give Schneider some rest which he needs aswell throughout the yr

For everyone complaining about Endy and Pagan not playing yesterday …. a manager has to keep his bench players from becoming stale and disgruntled. Before the last two games, Ency had gotten the least amount of playing time except for Clark. I don’t think they worry too much about keeping Clark sharp as he’s not long for this team anyway. But Endy’s here most likely for the whole year so it’s wise to play him from time to time. Besides,, Endy had good numbers against Zambrano so he’s a logical choice. Pagan would have been facing Zambrano for the first time which is not a prescription for success.

Is it any wonder Pagan cooled off after Willie dumped an ice bucket on him with his vote of no confidence earlier. We were hot with Church hitting second and Pagan in the lineup. But Willie’s goal is to maintain the heirarchy and keep the bench fresh. I thought that the goal was to win games. You go with the hot hand.

Concerning Beltran, I get so tired of seeing him watch called third strikes. It drives me nuts. Ted Williams advocated changing your approach with two strikes but it seems Beltran would rather be guessing as to the pitch that is coming.

I agree Church should be hitting second. He has been very consistent and one of our hottest bats too. Why would he need “time off” at this point?

Pagan’s drop off started EXACTLY when Willie gave him a vote of no confidence

You also don’t see or hear any players going out of their way to say what a great manager Willie is

I’m just sayin’…..

Are you kidding me? Is Pagan 4 years old and still needs reinforcement? What Willie said is true and bound to happen.. Pagan came down to earth from his hot start. Continue what he’s doing the whole season and he’ll get all the props in the world. It wasn’t as if Willie set out to bash Pagan. A reporter asked him a question and Willie said “Let’s wait and see” instead of saying “Yeah, he’s the next HOFer.”

Maybe when Alou comes back, we can finally move Delgado DOWN in the order. How about batting Alou 5, Church 6, Delgado 7 (assuming Castillo stays in the 2-hole)? If, on the other hand, Castillo is put back to batting 8th, then Delgado would bat 6th. Either way, Delgado’s time is clearly up. The guy simply doesn’t get hits, no less hits for power. Plus, maybe Beltran will start getting something to hit with a legitimate hitter behind him.

Throughout the entire ‘07 season, and spring training this year, I kept my hopes up for Delgado, thinking “he’s a professional, he’ll be back.” Clearly my hope was misplaced. He is not the hitter he once was and in all likelihood he never will be again. He needs to hit lower in the order.

My guess is that when Alou comes back Church will go back to #2 Delgado/Alou will flip flop in the 5/6 spot depending if there is a lefty pitching.

What if you had to spend a season sitting next to the guy who dumped you? FORGETTING ANGEL PAGAN is the story of young heartthrob outfielder (Angel Pagan) who makes his way back to the team that drafted him only to find that his manager (Willie Randolph) has fallen in love with an aging rockstar (Moises Alou). Riding the pine next to his unrequited boss isn’t easy, but audiences will cheer as Angel learns to live, laugh and love, and even get in a plate appearance or two! Co-starring Forest Whitaker as Luis Castillo and Aarron Heilman as the Angel of Death, FORGETTING ANGEL PAGAN is the feel-good spring hit you don’t want to miss - unless you’re a Mets fan!

What’s really hurting the Mets right now is the #4 and #5 hitters doing SQUAT! Maybe with Alou back, Beltran will start seeing some better pitches and heat up.

I would assume Brady Clark gets released once Alou is activated. But with Pagan still having options I would not be surprised to see him getting sent down and be able to play everyday.

Plus Omar and Willie’s penchant for older players.

I agree once Alou gets back Willie should rest Beltran. Beltran is in a big slump and needs to time to get his bat back. He could fix his machanics and have some mental time for himself he could come back fresh. Then take Pagan and stick him on the bench. He can bat on either side making him a valuable bench player who gets maybe one or two starts a week. Then the outfielder is all good for the Mets. And down the rode, when it comes time to trade Delgado you have *Alou* or Pagan to trade with Delgado and get some good young talent for first base and any other wholes the mets have.
