Health: Alou on Track for Return
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 23, 2008 7:46 am

Moises Alou had two hits in seven at-bats during an extended spring training game in St. Lucie yesterday.

…a) by keeping him in st. lucie, as opposed to traveling with the minor league team, team trainers could monitor his progress…b) since all went all, it sounds like he remains on track to either re-join the team in New York this weekend, or for the start of the following series against the Pirates…and c) he did not pick up a first baseman’s mitt, nor do i think he will…

Sounds good, but I wish I had some confidence that he’s not going to get injured again within a week of rejoining the team. Someone convince me.

  2. HelloBrooklyn says:

I wish Alou was capable of handling a first basemans mit and take over for Delgado. It would be great to have Alou’s bat in the lineup but I would prefer Pagan’s bat over Delgado any day

    • Nate W. says:

the better solution (imo) to that issue would be to teach Church how to play 1B so they can all stay in the lineup. I realize he is lefty the same as Delgado, but at this point with Carlos its not just a problem with lefties.

      • zer09 says:

Why would you take a solid and competent right fielder and move him to a lesser defensive position? Church needs to stay in the outfield and run down the balls and keep people from going first to third. You take away one of his biggest assets if you move him…

      • darkstar73 says:

why teach Church? why not teach Pagan to play the outfield? What exactly is behind that reasoning? Church is far better in the outfield then Pagan is.

    • Giaco says:

      Jorge Toca anyone?

  3. Bench5urvivor says:

Alou at first is not a bad idea to try at all, but you would have to wonder about the added adjustment with all the injuries.

Plus, who’s most likely to get the axe upon Moises’ return… Clark?

    • Jim says:

How much worse could do defensively? He would probably atleast cover the bag.

      • Nate W. says:

Wright’s error total would to up exponentially, which would be added on to the few extra grounders that Delgado would handle that Alou wont. Bad idea all around.

        • Jim says:

I meant it as a joke, kind of like Delgado’s play a joke. I don’t think Alou is the answer but we need to do something.

        • zer09 says:

Not only that, but with the injury risk that he is there’s no point of re-teaching him a whole new position if he might go down again…if you’re teaching someone to play a new position, you want it to be time well invested – which in this situation certainly won’t be the case…

  4. gomets6091 says:

let’s hope they can win all 12 games he plays in this year…

  5. mavicario says:

How about trying Pagan at first?
He’s younger and probably very eager to stay in the lineup.

I don’t think Alou is a bad defensive outfielder where he should be forced to move.

    • Nate W. says:

Pagan or Church, both make more sense than Alou.

      • zer09 says:

Church needs to stay in the outfield. He makes no sense to bring down to 1B. Pagan has never played anywhere other than the OF – not in the minors, not in the majors. If you’re teaching him 1B, it will be a long learning process – not something he’ll pick up overnight. It’s a bad idea all around – we need to either sign or trade for a guy who can hold down fort until next year. I would certainly give Shawn Green a call…

        • metties24 says:

everyone stop. alou is not replacing delgado, no one is replacing him, the team has too much freakin money invested in him they are not going to turn him into a jason giambi.

church’s arm and outfield range is vastly underrated, pagan has way too much raw, young talent to have him switch from OF to first.

and zer09, please tell me you are kidding about shawn greene. you want to talk about our firstbaseman not being able to hit the ball? greene hasn’t been able to swing his bat ever since he stopped taking steroids.

        • zer09 says:

I’d rather have Green over Delgado. And yes, I’m kidding – but in reality, there really aren’t too many good hitting good fielding guys available who can come in and make a difference. You’re right about the money on Delgado, but I can certainly see him being put into a more limited role – which would mean that there’s going to be another mediocre guy spelling him 1-2 times per week at 1B, and that will be someone Omar is going to have trade for. Not a good situation all around…

        • metties24 says:

i do agree, the situation is a mess but to say green over delgado is silly. i think that, like the rest of the team, delgado will come around, not the delgado of the past but i think he will come around.
tonight is the 20th game of the season. Johan going against washington. we should look at the comments tomorrow and read about how willie is a genius for letting him pitch 7+ innings, and how the Mets really seemed to click.
We lose three games in a row, and suddenly, everyone is writing them off again and jumped off the bandwagon that they jumped on when we won 5 in a row…sorry, just taking out my frustrations with these fans not at you zer

  6. stickguy says:

Assuming he hits close to last year, ALou will be a big lift to the line up. And assuming that Church goes back to the 2 hole for now, with CD pushed to 6, they certainly seem to have a better shot at sustaining a rally.

  7. Nate W. says:

I’m more concerned with Alou getting time in the OF. He doesnt need 7 AB’s against A ball pitchers who failed to make the A ball rosters.

So far it looks like he’s played just 5 innings in the field, and otherwise just taken BP off kid pitchers.

  8. backinbusiness says:

Alou at first with his age/health issues is a miserable idea. One sky-high throw from David, which Alou would actually reach for…strain, tear, pull, 15 day DL.

    • zer09 says:

I think the prerequisite for Alou’s injuries is a 30 day DL stint. has he ever been out “just 15 games”?

  9. the_other_matt says:

“he did not pick up a first baseman’s mitt…”

I think part of this sentence was cut off:
he did not pick up a first baseman’s mitt, for fear bending over would strain
