why teach Church? why not teach Pagan to play the outfield? What exactly is behind that reasoning? Church is far better in the outfield then Pagan is.

"he did not pick up a first baseman’s mitt…"

I think part of this sentence was cut off:
he did not pick up a first baseman’s mitt, for fear bending over would strain
<i> something <i>

i do agree, the situation is a mess but to say green over delgado is silly. i think that, like the rest of the team, delgado will come around, not the delgado of the past but i think he will come around.
tonight is the 20th game of the season. Johan going against washington. we should look at the comments tomorrow and read about how willie is a genius for letting him pitch 7+ innings, and how the Mets really seemed to click.
We lose three games in a row, and suddenly, everyone is writing them off again and jumped off the bandwagon that they jumped on when we won 5 in a row...sorry, just taking out my frustrations with these fans not at you zer

I'd rather have Green over Delgado. And yes, I'm kidding - but in reality, there really aren't too many good hitting good fielding guys available who can come in and make a difference. You're right about the money on Delgado, but I can certainly see him being put into a more limited role - which would mean that there's going to be another mediocre guy spelling him 1-2 times per week at 1B, and that will be someone Omar is going to have trade for. Not a good situation all around...

everyone stop. alou is not replacing delgado, no one is replacing him, the team has too much freakin money invested in him they are not going to turn him into a jason giambi.

church's arm and outfield range is vastly underrated, pagan has way too much raw, young talent to have him switch from OF to first.

and zer09, please tell me you are kidding about shawn greene. you want to talk about our firstbaseman not being able to hit the ball? greene hasn't been able to swing his bat ever since he stopped taking steroids.

I think the prerequisite for Alou's injuries is a 30 day DL stint. has he ever been out "just 15 games"?

Church needs to stay in the outfield. He makes no sense to bring down to 1B. Pagan has never played anywhere other than the OF - not in the minors, not in the majors. If you're teaching him 1B, it will be a long learning process - not something he'll pick up overnight. It's a bad idea all around - we need to either sign or trade for a guy who can hold down fort until next year. I would certainly give Shawn Green a call...

Not only that, but with the injury risk that he is there's no point of re-teaching him a whole new position if he might go down again...if you're teaching someone to play a new position, you want it to be time well invested - which in this situation certainly won't be the case...

Why would you take a solid and competent right fielder and move him to a lesser defensive position? Church needs to stay in the outfield and run down the balls and keep people from going first to third. You take away one of his biggest assets if you move him...
