TRex – even though you make a decent point, it does not apply in this case. Go to mets.com and you will see the 40man roster currently sits at 37. This means they can add 3 more players to it without having to put someone else through waivers who is already on it.

Also, they have guys who are out for the long term on the 40man (J Vargas, Burgos) who could be placed on the 60day DL which frees up a spot. So it really isnt a concern at this point.

The point is NOT that he is currently holding anyone back. The point is that he cannot be counted on due to health reasons AND there are numerous indications that he is finished talent-wise.

He doesn’t hold anyone back NOW, but he DOES take up a spot on the 40 man roster. And that IS a bigger deal than most people believe. In order to add someone, the Mets would have to add him to the 40 man roster. In order to add someone to the 40, someone must be let go and that means either released outright or passed through waivers and sent to the minors — if possible.

So if the Mets wanted to sign a guy like Freddie Garcia — and I’m not suggesting that is the answer — they would have to remove someone from the 40.

If those two were race horses the Mets would burn down their stable for the insurance money. Of course Delgado, Sosa and Alou would probably be sleeping in there with them.

Why? He’s on the DL, who is he holding back?

The rotation is pretty decent right now and if/when Pedro returns in May/June, it should be even better (and hopefully, Figueroa will replace Sosa as the long man).

When El Duque was healthy, he was one of the Mets best pitchers last year. If he comes back healthy in August, he could give the starting rotation some much-needed rest at that point.

The Mets need to release El Duque as soon as possible. Really, what is the point of all this nonsense? He’s finished. And even if he comes back in a month or two, he will only break down again and again. He’s taking up a spot on the 40 man roster when “healthy” but he produces nothing. Give him his unconditional release.

I know he’s 36yrs old, but it just doesn’t make any sense to me that Pedro is going to take so long. He had a full spring training, so it’s not like he has to get himself back in baseball shape. It is also a leg injury, so it’s not that he needs to regain strength in his arm. The end of May for a rehab start seems like such a long time for a mild strained hamstring.

Matt, are you speculating based on his past rehab or is this based on talking to a trainer?
