OF Fernando Martinez is starting to hot up, going 1-for-4 with a walk and a run..

Nevermind the grammar error. How is going 1 for 4 with a walk an indication of someone starting to heat up???

  3. mackey_sassers_arm says:

Carp, Evans, and Murphy are all tearing it up… What are the ceilings for these three? Are they legit prospects, or are they all playing way over their heads right now?

I wouldn’t mind seeing at least one of them moved up to AAA to at least put Delgado on notice that he needs to wake up.

    • Hojy20 says:

I agree. All three are mashing, it seems that one of them should at least be shuttled down to NO to see if they can adjust to the new level. Esp. with Delgado’s contract up, it should be worth a look to see if one can slide in at first next year (if the Yankees give Texiera a 300 M contract).

    • stickguy says:

I know that these prospects get labelled early, and of course the posters here pick up on that. But, IMO, if they are producing, then they have to be considered prospects. The key is, they were all highly regarded, and are all realtively young (or at least appropriate age) for the level.

21-22 at AA is a nice pace. Even if it took them 2 more years to reach the majors, that would sitll only be 24.

2 years ago, Carp was a big prospect, and IIRC last year he had a big srping. It was an injury that derailed his 2007 season, not a lack of ability.

Now, he seems healthy. WIll he be able to replace Delgado this year (or in 2009) and become a star? Who knows, but it is certainly intriquing to think about giving him a chance.

THe other guys look like solid hitters too. And thankfully, other than needed a 1B and LF in 2009 (well, maybe 2008 for 1B!), there is no need to rush them up or out in a trade.

      • Nate W. says:

Carp wasnt really a big prospect until he broke out in the ‘07 camp. His last season lower him back to moderate prospect level.

  4. backinbusiness says:

Jordan, can you tell us about this Josh Peterson? He seems to be doing well at 1B also, but I don’t remember seeing a report on him.

Mike Carp should be moved to AAA to at least see what he does with better pitching. Right now he is absurd.
    .442 BA
    .482 OBP
    .727 SLG
    1210 OPS (!)
12 extra base hits (incl. 5 HRs).

We need to know whether we should be on the bandwagon by seeing what he can do at a more appropriate level.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

i agree. Im curious to see how he fairs in AAA. Gives us a better idea how bad we need to persue Tex in FA

      • stellar says:

“I’m curious to see how he [fares] in AAA.”

Against the AAAA guys that can’t hack it in the majors? Pass.

If they want to see what he can do, call him up to the bigs.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

          I completely agree, Stellar.

Our AAA seems to be a place for off-track careers to stay off track or replace an injured vet. (see Brady Clark). Bring the young guys up to the bigs.

        • backinbusiness says:

Just because our AAA is a retirement home doesn’t mean they all are.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

Anyone know what level other teams top pitching prospects are? Like Tampa’s Price, Cincy’s Bailey, LA’s Kershaw. Lets see how our guys fare against them.

      • stickguy says:

AAA might not have the top prospects, but what they do have is guys with more experience. And for pitchers, that means breaking balls, and pitching to a batters weaknesses.

I think it is pretty much been proven that Carp can handle a FB! Now, what can he do agianst guys that pitch like El Duque?

I would , however, love to see him get a 2 week trial if CD had to go on the DL with something minor. Just like with Gomez last year, a perfect short trial with nor pressure or expectations.

    • Nate W. says:

Petersen has been playing mostly OF. He’s been a utility guy for his minor league career and never really gotten a prolonged look as a regular.

He is 25, and spent the last two years in St. Lucie where he barely got more than 300 AB’s each year. His career minor league OBP is a ghastly .310 with a 692 OPS. Maybe something finally clicked for him, but its too small of a sample.

A guy who can play 1B/3B/LF/RF could be very useful if he hits well. But isnt Dan Murphy supposed to be that guy?

      • Midtown says:

I’ll take Murphy, Carp, Evans, Anderson Hernandez, Argenis Reyes, my cousin Sal, or my left shoe over Delgado right now. Just call somebody up to start getting some big league at-bats.

      • backinbusiness says:

Thanks Nate. Just noticed him in the stats and wondered why we hadn’t heard of him.

  5. MetLifer says:

I say bring Carp up now. Trade Delgado for some prospects. Don’t go after Tex and save the money to go after pitching.

    • stellar says:

I shudder to think the quality of “prospects” we would get in return for a broken-down Delgado.

The fact of the matter is we’re stuck with him. The whole league can see that he sucks. Nobody in their right mind would give up ANYTHING to get him.

I say we cut him if this goes on for another month or so.

      • Midtown says:

        Word.

It doesn’t help that he knows we don’t have anybody on the bench to fill in for him long term, and that his job is basically safe no matter how bad or good he does.

      • kingrw says:

‘I shudder to think the quality of “prospects” we would get in return for a broken-down Delgado.’

along the lines of what they got back for roberto alomar…or jeremy burnitz????

      • Nate W. says:

me playing another teams GM: I’ll take Delgado off your hands, in return you give me Carlos Muniz and we’ll call it a deal… ;)

they would have to be very creative to make a dump move on Delgado. It would be a lot of cash for mediocre prospects. Or something like Delgado and Heilman for a decent player.

  6. Midtown says:

Call up Carp! Call up Carp! We need to light a fire under Delgado’s behind.

  7. Nate W. says:

Jordan, you forgot newly acquired Eude Brito.

He came into a first and second, no out jam and promptly got a double play. Good. Then allowed a single and double to score the two decisive runs. Not so good.

He followed with a solid second inning of work striking out two.

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

Sounds like a lefty Jorge Sosa. Except for the token 3-run shot in his 2nd inning.

  8. mikeyrad says:

Does Danny Murphy have the defensive tools to play 2b?

    • stickguy says:

Well, only 1 way to find out. Give hi the glove and give it a try.

I assume they are considering Castillo a LT solution (even if we aren’t) so they are likely waiting on one of the younger guys to develop naturally (Tejada?)

Chase Utley moved from 3B to 2B, and that seemed to wrk out OK. Didn’t Fonzi go that direction too (I keep forgetting which one he started at).

  9. stickguy says:

I understand that Delgado is here for the year most likely (unless he continues to really stink the joint out.

But, if Carp in particular keeps mashing, they really have to bring him up at some point for a look.

Why you ask? Because that will give them some empirical data to work with to decide if he can be given the job next year. If Carp and Evans aren’t deemed to be ready, then they have to go another direction.

And you don’t want to let it all play out in ST, since those stats can be quite misleading, and it takes away the off season opportunities.

I really hope they look to stay in house (heck, Carp and Evans can replace Delgado and Easley and share the job). It looks like 1B is the one area where they have some legit prospects, so might as well try to work them in.

    • breadclock says:

Whereas I think Carp is best served with an immediate promotion to New Orleans so he can play 1B fulltime instead of DHing, I think the Mets would be wise to get both Carp and Evans more versatile by sticking one in the OF when not playing 1B.

F-Mart is certainly not the guaranteed heir to LF next spring. If Carp and Evans both keep mashing, who the hell would object to seeing one at 1B and one in LF at Opening Day in CitiField? The team average age would plummet.

  10. xxcgags21metsxx says:

Keep an eye on Lucas Duda…the kid can play
