preGame: Mets vs Braves
By Mike Nichols - Apr 25, 2008 5:55 pm

The Game:

The Mets (11-10) begin a six-game homestand with a three-game series against the Braves (11-11) tonight at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm EST.

The Lineup:

Carlos Delgado is out of tonight’s lineup….

According to Anthony McCarron of the Daily News, there is nothing ‘physically wrong’ with Delgado. He is just getting the day off.

The Pitchers:

RHP Mike Pelfrey (2-0, 3.18 ERA) toes the rubber for the Mets. Pelfrey earned a no-decision in his last start, surrendering four runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings pitched. He is 5-1 with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.28 K/BB ratio during his last six starts dating back to September 1. In two career starts versus the Braves, Pelfrey is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA.

RHP Jair Jurrjens (2-2, 3.20 ERA) starts for the Braves. In his last start on April 20 versus the Dodgers, Jurrjens earned a win allowing one run on three hits and three hits while striking out over seven innings pitched. This is Jurrjens first career start versus the Mets.

The Notes:

Luis Castillo is batting .341 (14-for-41) with 3 RBI, 5 SB and 6 runs scored in his last 10 games.

During his current 10-game hitting streak, Ryan Church is 16-for-40 (.400) with 1 HR, 3 2B, 6 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Chipper Jones is batting .310 with 19 2B, 19 HR and 53 RBI in 83 career games played at Shea Stadium.

The Braves are the only team in the National League without a hit from one of their pitchers, going 0-for-39.

still no news on Brian Schneider?

  2. HOFMets57 says:

Just come out and say it, Willie…

“I’m sitting big Carlos tonight, because I don’t the fans to make a grown man cry. The boos are going to be loud. REAL LOUD. He deserves it, though. He’s on the interstate (.198 avg.) for crying out loud.”

  3. domosnacks5 says:

Ugh, looking at this lineup really makes me hope that Reyes, Wright, and Beltran give us 2 for 3 or 3 for 4 nights each tonight.

  4. altru426 says:

tonight would be a great night to see 2 hits a piece for Reyes, Wright and Beltran with Church staying hot…

    go big pelf!

    LET’S GO METS

  5. GO BIG PELF!! LETS GO METS!!

  6. C Dubb says:

Maybe a few days off will revitalize Delgado’s bat. Though a few months off didn’t seem to do the trick…

    • rockets212 says:

it did he hit the first few games of the season then he started acting like old delgado (hittin .150)

  7. NYMetsGrrl94 says:

come on Mikey P! may the force of the mouth guard be with you!

  8. therealsince86 says:

Well everyone wanted Delgado out of the lineup, hope this helps. Either way when he comes back in I would leave him in the 7 spot.

    • altru426 says:

      Yeah I agree.

      Reyes
      Castillo
      Wright
      Beltran
      Church
      Alou
      Delgado
      Schneider
      [Pitcher]

      • altru426 says:

I’m glad Castillo is hitting, he is making me feel stupid the last few games for doubting him, I liked it haha

        • altru426 says:

making me feel stupid about doubting him prior to the last few games*

        • andyglass1 says:

who doesnt doubt a player who has so much trouble hitting the ball past the infielders… unless he can reach the outfield in any game like 99.9% of all ML hitters, there is going to be concern… putting one just past the IF’rs is reason for celebration at this point. that’s not worth $6.0m for one year, let alone two years, 3 years, or 4 years. its mambo time bebe

        • therealsince86 says:

I really don”t care how he gets it done. As long as he hits near .300 and .370 and plays good defense it does not matter to me where he hits it.

  9. gipper91375 says:

Definitely have to drop Delgrampa to 7 in the lineup upon his return. As a first measure.

  10. Metdamage says:

yankees lost bruney for the season. A huge loss because bruney was good for 6th and 7th innings now the bridge to joba and rivera is very suspect.

  11. NY Cuban says:

I actually feel better about this lineup than if Delgado was in it. Lets see if we can stop the bleeding somehow….lets go Big Pelf!

  12. Metdamage says:

I’m pumped to see Harold Reynolds join SNY. It adds a ton to their cache.

  13. domosnacks5 says:

HAROLD REYNOLDS IN THE SNY BOOTH LOOKS AWESOME!

  14. NY Cuban says:

You think Harold Reynolds can manage?

    • khmustache says:

i didn’t want to be the first person to ask about this…but he seems to have the tools…

      • rockets212 says:

id like to see that but not as his first managing job ever (probably wont be but might be a whole new willie)

  15. metsfan119 says:

First off, very happy about Harold Reynolds being added to the pre-game show. So what if he inappropriately hugged some girl in a Boston Market, who hasn’t?

But more importantly, the Mets HAVE to win this series. I know Willie will always have his kool-ade drinking Mets apologists at his back, but if the Mets don’t take at least 2 out of 3 this weekend, Willie will be in serious trouble. This team has now been playing dead baseball since last May. It’s bad enough that no one was held accountable for last season’s disgrace, but Omar can’t let this continue.

  16. Metdamage says:

Harold reynolds just broke Delgado’s swing down in 2 minutes.

  17. MudvilleNine says:

I think Mazilli just about admitted that he’s been reading Metsblog.

  18. hyperion4 says:

I see that Ricardo Rincon is pitching in the Mexican League.
Does anyone know if that means the Mets cut ties with him?

Sosa has been so awful that I was thinking I’d rather have the Mets release Sosa and have Rincon on the staff, because I thought he looked good in spring training.

    • therealsince86 says:

I think I heard something about the Mets trying to work it out where he could still do that but they still retained his rights? I don’t know where I heard that.

    • Metdamage says:

Rincon pitched well in the spring for the Mets. I think the mets cut him and no team picked him up off waivers so he could be a free agent.

Rincon pitched better than Show in the spring.

Good jod by Willie for having the team take infield after their fielding woes on the road.

    • MudvilleNine says:

I think with the minor league deal, he had the option to opt out if he didnt make the big squad. He left and didnt get another offer from anyone except maybe a minor league one. By going to the Mexican league he can still be pitching and be able to accept an offer from any team to pitch in the majors. If he had signed with one team to be at AAA, he’d have to hope that team called him up, whereas any team can call him now.

    • therealsince86 says:

“The N.Y. Daily News reports that the Mets hope to allow LHP Ricardo Rincon to pitch with his Mexican League team and retain his rights in the majors. The 10-year veteran told teammates he’d rather retire than report to Triple-A New Orleans.
      (Updated 04/04/2008). “

  19. khmustache says:

i am pretty happy that harold reynolds is with sny. i don’t think there’s a better baseball analyst out there (your loss espn…kruk sucks)

  20. Dirtysanchez says:

man i hope i get the SNY broadcast

  21. Metdamage says:

SNY has come a long way. they must have hired better producers because the whole network has gotten much better.
The Wheelhouse is the only really dumb program and the graphics on that show is terrible compared to Loudmouths.
Overall, the network seems to have better advertising and better production values.

The mets must be raking in the cash from that network

  22. mex84 says:

Lets go Mets! We need to make up for that debacle last night. Tomahawk them Braves!

  23. oleosmirf says:

harold reynolds is the best studio baseball analyst and was a great addition.

the mexican league is actually considered to be a AAA league but they are not affiliated with any major league teams…

No idea how the rights to the players work though…

  24. khmustache says:

    man larry jones scares me

    • mex84 says:

Getting stuck in a combine saw, that scares me, but i dot let it get the best of me.

      • khmustache says:

        getting stuck in a wood chipper would be the worst…get it?…wood CHIPPER?!!!…chipper jones…wood chipper…god i’m stupid

  25. Metdamage says:

Are there usually brave trolls on the blog when the mets play the braves?

  26. Dirtysanchez says:

    uh o

  27. Dirtysanchez says:

its gonna b a long game

  28. rockets212 says:

no no no big pelf the pen cant take it

  29. gipper91375 says:

Somebody explain the strike zone to Big Pelf.

  30. CitizenSnips says:

    Can he throw a strike?

  31. almar1965 says:

I really honestly wonder if Pelfrey is not comfortable with Casanova behind the plate af ter his comments about how much Schnide has help him so far this year.

Then again it seems Casanova calls a sucky game to begin with.

  32. metsfan119 says:

This is brutal, who can come in early?

  33. therealsince86 says:

Well this is just not good.

  34. almar1965 says:

    …and here we go again.

  35. dykstraw says:

    this looks brutal.

on the bright side, i have decided to start drinking an hour before gametime!

  36. therealsince86 says:

I would almost just ignore the score and let Pelfrey continue to pitch score be damned because if the pen comes in early it will still be a loss and have a spent pen.

  37. Dirtysanchez says:

smart play wright. please pelf just get one more out

  38. almar1965 says:

Can the Mets bats beat up on Jurgens Soap tonight. I mean really…

  39. Dirtysanchez says:

    FINALLY

  40. metsfan119 says:

Whew, this game could’ve got ugly real quick

  41. gipper91375 says:

That turned out better than expected.

  42. dykstraw says:

    WOW

    way to fight big pelf!

  43. Jay says:

Ok way to limit the damage pelf!!! We got the old man out of the lineup today, lets score some runs.

  44. Dirtysanchez says:

lol a bit different outcome than late with bases loaded huh lol

  45. dykstraw says:

    MEESA JAIR JAIR JURRGENS

  46. Dirtysanchez says:

yea cas and pelf need to get it together

  47. Dirtysanchez says:

well at least hes working a count

  48. Metdamage says:

    small strike zone tonight

  49. rockets212 says:

does nayone but me think that having Hojo as the hittin coach be screwin with reyes hittin? because ever sense Hojo ever became hittin coach reyes has sucked at the plate

    • therealsince86 says:

I thought the entire slump was because they could not get out of what Rick Down had done. LOL

      • rockets212 says:

idk but hopefully we can agree that somethin needs to be done if it continues a whole lot longer

  50. therealsince86 says:

7 pitch out. Better than a 1 pitch out.

    • metsfan119 says:

Sadly that’s the barometer of the Mets offense right now,

      • therealsince86 says:

You are not going to get a hit every time but one thing I did notice early in the year that I was happy about was that everyone was working the count and getting into bullpens early. However recently they have not been patient at all swinging at a lot of 1st and 2nd pitches.

  51. Dirtysanchez says:

    awwwwwwwwwwwwww mannnnnnnnnnn
    soo close good rip wright

  52. metsfan119 says:

The Mets lead the league in just foul home runs. I’m completely in belief of this

  53. jcervone7 says:

Well, when the Mets get us down there’s always Giuseppe to cheer us up.

  54. therealsince86 says:

At least we made him throw 19 pitches. We have to work the count to get into the pen early. I don’t think the Braves will let this guy go much more than 100 pitches if at all.

  55. rockets212 says:

    pelfs everywhere tonight

  56. metsfan119 says:

Gee, Bobby Cox is putting a kid in the lineup because he is getting on base? Take notes Willie.

    • therealsince86 says:

What else did you want Willie to do tonight. Look most of us know that if this continues Willie needs to go but give the guy a chance tonight. He did take Delgado down last night and out tonight.

      • metsfan119 says:

It’s just his overall “going down with the ship” attitute with his veterans. Has nothing to do with this game per say. Just overall he never seems to either respect or encourage the play of his younger players.

        • metsfan119 says:

Yes, sitting Delgado is a start.

        • therealsince86 says:

Like letting Pagan play instead of Easley or Anderson in LF all season? You have a lot of bones to pick with him because of last year but I think he has learned a lot from it. He is trying to do some things different. If they don’t work and we are still struggling then he does have to go.

        • metsfan119 says:

But he HAD to play Pagan because of Alou (he even downplayed his great start, which I still don’t get the point of). We’ll see how he does these next few series.

        • therealsince86 says:

No he did not HAVE to. Easley and Anderson both played OF last season.

        • dykstraw says:

yeah, i don’t think he could have possibly run easley or anderson out there in the OF everyday.

        • therealsince86 says:

But the “old” Willie would have “trusted” his guys and platooned those two even after Pagan’s ST. He even went with Pagan over Endy.

        • dykstraw says:

nah i think he would have ventured into serious job jeopardy if he had pulled that

        • metsfan119 says:

Different situations with the Endys, Andersons, etc. The problem with Willie is he has blind faith in veterans that WERE very good players.

        • dykstraw says:

he had some success with endy and stache in 2006, but how many other guys has he stuck with that failed?

        • therealsince86 says:

Such as Delgado and uh uh uh

        • dykstraw says:

kaz ishii, miguel cairo to get all prehistoric on you

        • therealsince86 says:

But he said guys that used to be good. LOL Ishii and Cairo as examples but I can’t use Easley, Anderson or Endy.

  57. Dirtysanchez says:

    crap

  58. Dirtysanchez says:

    good move

  59. Dirtysanchez says:

    damn 40 pitches already…………..

  60. Dirtysanchez says:

arite pelf get this guy out kmon

  61. Dirtysanchez says:

    good job

  62. rockets212 says:

so whos pitchin the 6th and 7th after pelf barely makes it out of the 5th?

  63. khmustache says:

this commercial makes me hate heineken…

    • metsfan119 says:

I’d rather see that then that black woman with the amputated fingers. Come on SNY, we get it, cigarettes are bad. What’re we in 3rd grade?

      • khmustache says:

good point…the commercials have been terrible this year…guiseppe, the amputee, derek jeter in a car dealership…makes me wish for tom glavine in a hard hat (almost)

  64. metsfan119 says:

Tex would look great in a Mets uniform

    • therealsince86 says:

Keep on dreaming, that is the least likely thing to happen this offseason.

      • metsfan119 says:

not necessarily, it all depends on how badly the Yankees young pitching performs this season

        • therealsince86 says:

Either way the Yankees will dump Giambi and look to get a 1B and based on what Giambi makes that will pay for Tex. Then they will still go after a CC type on top of that.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

how does the performance of their young pitchers affect the yanks throwing the kitchen sink at tex?

        • khmustache says:

it makes me laugh everytime hughes lays another egg…coulda had johan…

        • therealsince86 says:

Besides I really would rather get a cheaper option and hope that one of our prospects actually work out. Then use all that money on pitching.

        • metsfan119 says:

If their pitching stinks, they may focus all their attentions to CC and maybe Sheets as well. Hopefully they’ll show some budget restraint at that point and give Shelly Duncan a chance at first with maybe a cheaper option to fall back on.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

its the yanks…..restraint is not in their vocabulary….trust me they will throw the kitchen sink at tex and he will bite

        • metsfan119 says:

Yeah, but you could’ve said the same thing when Beltran was a free agent.

        • therealsince86 says:

Yankee budget restraint. :) They will be in the market for Tex with out a doubt and they will give him more money than anyone. Locking up ARod and Tex on the corners? They are they Yankee’s you know. If they want Sheets and Tex then they will go after Sheets and Tex.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

besides cashmans approach to sticking with farm talent(which i think is the best way to go) than giving that up for santana is not working out well and he will see the door if they dont make the playoffs. Based on the way Lil Hank is acting lately….He will shell out money for em.

        • therealsince86 says:

But Beltran was a luxury for them at the time and not a necessity.

        • metsfan119 says:

Maybe they’ll want Delgado instead. He’ll probably play for food next season at this point. And that short right field fence….huh….come on work with me

    • Dirtysanchez says:

too bad we arent going to get him
then again noone thought we would get wagner/pedro/beltran and santana

  65. Dirtysanchez says:

    awwwwwwww man that sux
    he smoked that ball……tough break

  66. dykstraw says:

wow, first time listening to wayne hagin, do not like him. sounds like some yokel that works cards games.

  67. khmustache says:

hey everybody…reyes is back! (in the field anyways)

  68. Dirtysanchez says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    Great play Pelf

  69. gipper91375 says:

Oh man, that was a sweet play.

  70. Metdamage says:

Oh God that play was insane

  71. dykstraw says:

    HOLY CRAP

    ALOU SCRATCHED FROM PSL START

    “SLIGHT LEFT ANKLE SORENESS”

HOLY CRAP JUST FRICKING PLAY ALREADY

    i need another drink

  72. Dirtysanchez says:

great job marlon. Way to get on track.

  73. Metdamage says:

Delgado is not in a slump. He’s an iceberg and the Mets are the Titanic

    • andyglass1 says:

he may be going down, but he didnt pull the team down single handedly like, alomar or juan samual, at least we had a very good year, a so-so year, and now we pretty much see it’s over……

  74. Dirtysanchez says:

good job work the count guys…lets give this guy an early exit

  75. Dirtysanchez says:

    BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. Metdamage says:

    Nice hit and run willie

  77. metsfan119 says:

Now I get to watch a 6′7 guy try and bunt

  78. khmustache says:

fundamentals….wow…funny how they seem to work

  79. gipper91375 says:

Nice call with the hit and run.

Ew…I said something nice about Willie. I feel dirty.

  80. Dirtysanchez says:

    ……………………………..

  81. metsfan119 says:

Come on Reyes, god knows you’re due in these situations

  82. Metdamage says:

Tex goofed, that ball was goin foul

  83. Dirtysanchez says:

kmon jose…….. lets tie this up

  84. therealsince86 says:

Come on Jose, that’s just silly.

  85. khmustache says:

nice i was hoping he would swing at the first one

  86. rockets212 says:

its jose, in 06 id say at least one run in 08 nothin probably

  87. metsfan119 says:

    Reyes blows

  88. Dirtysanchez says:

    ay dios mio………..

  89. khmustache says:

    damn

  90. therealsince86 says:

Wow Reyes, 3 pitches 3 bad swings.

  91. Dirtysanchez says:

    kmon slappy PLEASE

  92. therealsince86 says:

Reyes has to get going if we are going to get going.

  93. rockets212 says:

its like in 05 when he couldnt and wouldnt lay off breakin stuff so thats all they throw him now so he gets behind in the count and must protect the plate and sucks he needs to get deeper in the count

  94. Dirtysanchez says:

CMON GUYS FIRST GS OF THE YEAR LETS GO!!!!

  95. metsfan119 says:

Percent Wright gets a hit here? 5%? 10%?

  96. gipper91375 says:

    C’mon David…time to break the mini-slump.

  97. gomets6091 says:

wait…Jair Jurrjens is black? Color me shocked, that’s the whitest name since….well, ever. I figured he was Norwegian or something. Where is he from?

    • khmustache says:

the same island as anduew jones…don’t know the name

    • Dirtysanchez says:

i forget the name of the island but same place where Andrew Jones is from

    • QueenOfQueens says:

      Curacao.

    • Metdamage says:

He’s from venezuela. you do realize that people of color have “white” names for a reason right?

      • gomets6091 says:

payback for Kenny Rogers in 1999….somehow this doesn’t feel quite as satisfying

        • gomets6091 says:

whoops….this was supposed to go at the bottom, I thought I canceled my reply to you. I’m batting a thousand today

    • gomets6091 says:

never mind, looked him up on Wikipedia, he’s from Curacao, which was a Norwegian colony, like Andruw Jones. Makes sense now.

      • gomets6091 says:

haha glad to see everyone got there before me.

      • andyglass1 says:

Dutch; its still part of Holland. the girl from AL died down there and there was some kind of cover up b/c the kid who did it his dad runs the island or has some political position… they finally sent his ass back to the island after a few months of hiding in holland

  98. therealsince86 says:

That is why I don’t care if Castillo swings 3-1 or not, nor do I care how he gets on base. Now its up to a real RBI man.

  99. therealsince86 says:

Now Wright is swinging at every pitch.

  100. Dirtysanchez says:

    wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  101. Dirtysanchez says:

    OOOO MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    LETS GO METS

  102. rockets212 says:

we need a 12-1 win good pitchin and good hittin

  103. Dirtysanchez says:

    wooooooooooo hooooooooooooooooooo
    lolllllllllllllllllllllll
that roookie gonna get thrown out loll
bobby cox saving his pitcher awwwwwwwwwwww

  104. therealsince86 says:

WOW! Here goes Bobby. And that’s what you want from Willie?

    • khmustache says:

yup…it’d be nice every once in a while

    • gipper91375 says:

Actually, he did the right thing there and protected his pitcher from getting tossed by getting in the ump’s face and allowing jurgens soap to cool off.

As Gary and the guys also noted.

      • therealsince86 says:

Or he could have just came out and calmed down his pitcher instead of showing the ump up.

        • gipper91375 says:

By the time he got to the mound, JarJar may have already gotten tossed…plu she would have burnt a trip to the mound….which McDowell needed later.

Anyway, Keith and Ronnie have been raving for over a half-inning about how Cox did the right thing. I particularly liked how Ronnie and Keith were saying how you love to have a manager who stands up for you and defends you…all while Bill Webb had the camera focused on Willie.

        • Aquadealer says:

Or he could have been like Willie and stayed in the dugout. Whiile his player argued.

          Spot on, Aqua.

I’ll never forget the look on Church’s face on a bad call at first earlier this year as he looked back to the dugout to see if Willie was running out to have his back ….to no avail.

  105. khmustache says:

    rbi!

nah nah nah nah….nah nah nah nah…heeeey hey hey…go somewhere and die!!!

  106. gipper91375 says:

Now Cox gets to leave the stadium and smoke his cigar…maybe even hop a flight to beat his wife for the night. All part of his plan.

  107. Dirtysanchez says:

    cmon lets go beltran
you are gonna get a really good pitch lets go

  108. therealsince86 says:

Great part here is Church is till behind him. This is why I love Church in the 5 spot.

  109. Dirtysanchez says:

lollll the ump is an ***hole lollllll
    that was a strike

  110. khmustache says:

    yee haw!!!

  111. jammer says:

i wish willie could learn something from bobby cox. he never would have gone to argue for his player like cox does.

  112. Dirtysanchez says:

    cmon CHURCH

  113. andyglass1 says:

I pretty much agree with you except, for the fact, until now, two key aspects of his game (the stellar “d” and the threat to steal 25 bases) have been missing. i would say a 2bm’n playing excellent d with the potential to hit 20 doubles would be great. look at the line the braves 2b put up last year as a rookie. if we ever have a 2b put those #’s up in his rookie year, fans would go nuts. I cant think of a single 2b the mets have ever developped who played well enough to hang around & be called a ML’r. (Jefferies attempt to play 2b for 2 yrs doesnt cut it; his best years were spent at 1b). I think Ron Hunt was homegrown; so I guess he would be the only one. Millian, Flynn cane via trades. Boswell was a utility guy for a few years.

  114. CitizenSnips says:

This is the opposite of Angel Hernandez.

  115. Dirtysanchez says:

    lol this kids loosing it

  116. Dirtysanchez says:

AWWW MAN HERE WE GO AGAIN
    LETS GO METS

  117. gipper91375 says:

Wow…I dunno what Church was waiting for on that 2-0 pitch!

  118. Dirtysanchez says:

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THAT UMP IS A ***** I LOVE IT

  119. jcervone7 says:

This is almost painful to watch… almost

  120. khmustache says:

    wow…ric ankiel anyone?

  121. jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Wow, I almost feel bad for Jair Jurorururs…. I mean, this is the worst umpiring i’ve ever seen.

  122. gipper91375 says:

Oh boy…that one looked borderline too.

  123. Dirtysanchez says:

lol cmon guys i think the ump is done playing around lets lace a double come away with something

  124. gomets6091 says:

wow, 44 pitches and counting this inning. Even if he gets out of this, we’ll be in the bullpen by the 5th

  125. gipper91375 says:

Jar-Jar Binks got upset in that inning.

  126. khmustache says:

    shoulda swung angel

  127. rockets212 says:

ok we need a quick 1-2-3 inning from big pelf so we can get Jurrjens back out there who still would be alittle razzled

  128. Dirtysanchez says:

we should have come away with more that inning, hopefully it wont come back to haunt us

    • Dafatone80 says:

You know, we really shouldn’t have come away with anything that inning. 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, castillo up. I’ll take 3 runs in that situation.

      • therealsince86 says:

Castillo’s ab really set up that inning after Reyes swinging at 3 straight pitches. Castillo comes up and really works a walk.

        • Dafatone80 says:

When Castillo hits a little, he’s really quite a decent ballplayer. When he doesn’t hit at all, watching him go deep into the count isn’t all that satisfying.

        • therealsince86 says:

But either way he is forcing the pitcher to throw a ton of pitches and is far from an easy out that is suggested on here.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

but he does the next best thing…get on base.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

yea but they all came on walks….not to mention a PO’ed ump

  129. gipper91375 says:

Odds that Pelf gives it right back after the long half-inning?

  130. Dirtysanchez says:

    cmon pelf lay a goose

  131. Dirtysanchez says:

    that doesnt help

  132. gdfther412 says:

    hes laying something

  133. khmustache says:

how hot does it have to be for the jacket to not wear a jacket?

  134. gdfther412 says:

he wore it in 85 degree weather last year

  135. gipper91375 says:

LOLOLOLOL at Keith and Ronnie saying you always love to have a manager stick up for you / defend you while talking about Cox, and Bill Webb has the camera focus on Willie sitting on the bench as they discuss how much you want a manager who will defend you.

    Classic. I love SNY.

  136. khmustache says:

    wow…the kids batting

  137. Dirtysanchez says:

ill be surprised if pelf makes it to the 6th the way hes going

  138. gipper91375 says:

Yikes Pagan was a wet noodle for an arm!

  139. Dirtysanchez says:

    fundamentals…………..

  140. khmustache says:

that was a jonny damon throw

  141. ExileInLA says:

    Slightly OT:

Anyone notice that Pagan is 5-30 in the last 10 days? Counting tonite, 9Ks, 1 BB.

I think he may need a rest — where’s Endy, anyway?

    • khmustache says:

it seems like he’s in willies doghouse for some reason…he’s only played in a couple of games all season

    • Wright88 says:

Endy recently played two games, Pagan has just come back from resting. He may just be coming back to earth.

    • Dafatone80 says:

      Pagan’s this year’s Ruben Gotay.

He’s just not all that good. He’s fast, and he could put in a pretty good year as a 4th outfield. He’ll get lots of playing time.

But he’s not the savior of the team or anything. Neither was Gotay.

      • therealsince86 says:

I can agree with that to an extent, however he does bring speed hitting from both sides better than Gotay and even problems considered better defense. I would not be upset with Pagan staying in LF until Fmart is ready next season.

  142. Dirtysanchez says:

    hellova question

    looks like 100%

  146. therealsince86 says:

This score and inning look familar?

    • therealsince86 says:

Lets see and next inning the score will still be 3-3 and Pelfrey will come out and put a man on, get an out put another man on then get pulled for Homerun Heilman or Slammin Sosa……

  147. khmustache says:

mccann makes john daly look athletic

  148. Darryl Strawberry says:

Yeah, but he constantly seems to hit doubles against us.

  149. therealsince86 says:

First pitch Reyes. Someone get this guy some Viagra or something.

  150. gipper91375 says:

    2 hits. 2 frickin hits.

  151. gipper91375 says:

2 effing hits off of JarJar Binks.

  152. moe.ron says:

deja vu? 3-3 game going into the 6th…….wheres grandsalami heliman?

  153. Hernandez_1B says:

The Mets should have knocked Jar Jar outta this game by now. I can’t believe they are bailing him out. Also, did Pagan all of a sudden forget how to play the outfield and throw the ball?? So sad

  154. Darryl Strawberry says:

This game was over before it started. So, the umpire gave them three runs by not calling Wright out on an obvious strike. This team just doesn’t have “it”. Sweep coming and then the Pirates will take two of three followed by a miserable trip to get killed by the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. Anyone who begs to differ needs a reality check.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why do you come on here if you have no hope whatsoever? Feel free to critize but you are something else.

    • Dafatone80 says:

Oh yeah. We’re totally going 11-151. Not gonna win another game all year.

If the Mets lose today, they’re what, 11-11? Many a great team has started 11-11.

Many bad teams have, too. We’ll see.

      • metsfan119 says:

It’s been more than just this season, for the 2,000th time

        • therealsince86 says:

This is not the same team. There was a lot of turnover from last season. Give them a chance and do yourself a favor and just learn from last year and move on.

        • gipper91375 says:

Personally, I’ll learn from next year and move on when and if the team does.

    • khmustache says:

learn how to knit or something dude…i don’t think baseball is your thing

  155. Dirtysanchez says:

    man a hit every inning….

  156. metsfan119 says:

I’m sure Pelfrey will be giving up plenty of “first career hits” in his career

  157. VelvetFoot says:

    Oy

  158. Dirtysanchez says:

welp lol at least its not a grand slam lol

  159. gipper91375 says:

I called that one. Texted my cousin…kelly Johnson bomb coming. I hate to be right.

  160. Hernandez_1B says:

So what do you say? 3 perfect innings by the pathetic Braves bullpen??

  161. therealsince86 says:

Should have pulled him unbelievable. I can here it now. “Pelfrey clearly did not have it after letting the pitcher get a hit and Willie should have pulled him”

  162. Hernandez_1B says:

Hey atleast the Rangers are winning as of right now. Gives me something to watch…..lol

  163. metsfan119 says:

Thank god for that fielding practice

  164. Dirtysanchez says:

damn marlon cant you be taller

  165. Darryl Strawberry says:

I come on here because I enjoy venting with other fans. I don’t attack any readers personally and if I do say so myself, I think my views are realistic. I have been watching this franchise my whole life and I call em as I see em…. As Atlanta takes a lead that the Mets will not come back from.

    • therealsince86 says:

” Anyone who begs to differ needs a reality check.”

Are you serious that anyone who still has hope for this team is wrong and you are clearly right? Maybe to enjoy baseball I like to think that they Mets have a chance and right now based on the division I still believe we do.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

cmon man have some faith.. its 2 runs and the braves bullpen is almost as bad as ours in close games. Give them a shot. Take it game by game bro

        • therealsince86 says:

I just don’t understand how Strawberry does it. He must be miserable all the time. And he does not get the joy of posting on here when things are going good or even last night after the game we all had a good time in the wake of a terrible game.

    • Ryanesq1 says:

I would agree if not for the fact that Bobby Cox is out of the game. He would not let them lose. Tonight, they may.

      • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

you people are rediculous. Do you seriously think the manager has that much power that he can actually “not let a team lose.” C’mon you guys, wake up please.

        • therealsince86 says:

I am hoping that his comment was a joke.

        • Ryanesq1 says:

I wasn’t. There is only one manager, Who I despise, on a team I despise, that has an impact on his players. This is the guy.

    • Dafatone80 says:

Generally speaking, when you claim a .500 team is going to go something like 1-11 over their next 12, you’re not being all that realistic. They could also go 11-1. Either could happen, but they’ll almost assuredly be somewhere in the middle.

      • therealsince86 says:

Wait I am not sure I understand rational thought anymore. Or the fact that our record is 11-10 which is actually on pace for 8 games over .500 for the season. It’s just too early to make any rash judgements.

  166. Ryan Synagogue says:

I would actually prefer he left Pelfrey in. Let the kid work through it. And these poor reliever need some damn rest.

Whatever, just another loss on Randolphs resume. One game closer to him being gone.

  167. Dirtysanchez says:

    GOD BLESS BELTRAN

  168. washtiger says:

Anyone think the Mets are purposely mailing it in to get Willie fired? Of course these guys are pros and should be playing to win, but c’mon, what gives? We load the bases — get four straight walks, can’t get a friggin hit, then Pelfrey gives it back and then some. Kelly f’in Johnson? That’s 2 HR’s for him off the Mets this year so far. What’s with Reyes?

    Sheesh!

  169. rockets212 says:

think positive the mets will pull this one off

  170. metsfan119 says:

Do you think Bobby V would come back to the Mets?

    • therealsince86 says:

Yes and any other MLB team that would finally offer him a job. However, don’t look for Mets mgmt to make that mistake again.

      • metsfan119 says:

What mistake? The guy got the Mets to the World Series with less talent than Willie.

        • therealsince86 says:

Actually that less talent thing is just not true.
          Catcher
          Piazza>Loduca
          Zeile>Delgado
          Alfonzo>Castillo
          Ordonesz<Reyes
          VenturaGreen
Agbyani>injured Alou and whoever else was playing
          PaytonGlavine
          Leiter>Maine
          Reed=Perez
Rush>Elduque (pitched for 190+innings that season)
          Jones>Pelfrey

That was a comparable team to last year’s Met’s team.

        • Don Logan says:

Dude, do you get off on being devil’s advocate on here or what? That was not a comparable team. Any OF with Agbayani, Timo and Payton is not comparable. I notice you conveniently leave Beltran, Wright and Wagner off of your list there. You mention the best players from the ‘00 team on there but leave many of the best players from the ‘07 team off of it.
And you’re smoking crack if you think Rush was better than El Duque. Nice memory. El Duque carried the staff last year during the summer. And you seem to forget all about Alou’s hitting streak. I’d take Alou’s .341 avg anyday over Benny.

        • therealsince86 says:

Benny played the entire season and was not injured when it counted. I did not forget to put those guys on there but for some reason the formating did not show up that is why Green is compared to Ventura and Payton to a pitcher.
Either way Rush was better than Elduque because he stayed healthy the entire season with a decent ERA and was still there for the end of the year.

Besides where do you get off saying the OF was Benny, Timo and Payton just leaving off Bell?

        • Don Logan says:

Well by your own rationale, being their when it counts is what you go by so Bell was not there when it counted.
I’d still take El Duque of last year over Rush. I see your reasoning but essentially that same logic means Bell’s a nonfactor.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think we view that team as magical because they came from the wildcard to the WS and played the Yankee’s tough. But, when you look back at that team it really was a good team with great pitching and the best defense in the ML’s. They also got career years out of some of their players like Benny and Timo.
That was one of my favorite Met teams and I don’t want to take anything away from them by saying they overachieved.

  171. Dirtysanchez says:

    what happened in the crowd?

    • gipper91375 says:

Fight, pretty intense one according to friends who are texting me from Shea.

      • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Yea, must’ve been pretty brutal. Fights happen all the time but the “ohh” from the entire crowd was unlike anything i’ve ever heard during a game.

        • khmustache says:

i’ve never liked mets-braves games at shea…there’s something particularly nasty about those pricks

  172. VelvetFoot says:

    good work sho

    • Ryan Synagogue says:

seriously, the fans need to start cheering for Show, he’s earned it between his second half last year, and this year doing more then expected.

  173. giuseppe franco says:

Hey guys! This team is pathetic!

  174. Darryl Strawberry says:

Look, I am so frustrated (like everyone else) because I root for this team through thick and thin. Excuse me if I have, what I think, is a realistic opinion. A lot of us wrote last year during September that this team was going to take a lot of time to recover. At this point I have not seen any indication that they are going to snap out of it.

    • therealsince86 says:

Expecting a 11-10 team to go 1-11 is not a realistic opinion. And this is not last year, learn from it and move on. Give this team a chance.

    • Ryan Synagogue says:

Dude its a Braves game. Go in with low expectations and you wont be disappointed. They may have our number but they lose to bad teams, too

      • therealsince86 says:

But he is not saying just the Braves, he is saying the Pirates and the Phillies and the………

  175. Ryan Synagogue says:

Im definitely not expecting a ninth inning walkoff, or a tenth inning walkoff. Who has time for that nonsense?

  176. metsfan119 says:

I’d take Giuseppe Franco at manager at this point. The team would still lose, but at least they would look fabulous in the process.

    • rockets212 says:

what is wrong with you??? lol

    • khmustache says:

you bet your a** they would…between that and the just for men hair coloring…well i don’t think anybody could beat them in fabulousness

  177. rockets212 says:

y dont willie leave schoe in? he hasnt pitched in a few days and it gives eomeone else the day off

  178. blains2000 says:

Quick random question – When was the last Met Grand Slam? And how many have they given up in that time?

    • Dirtysanchez says:

the last one was in 2006 against the cubs. Beltran and Floyd hit 2 GS in the same game

the mets have given up 7 or 8 GS since then

  179. therealsince86 says:

Ok I am ready for Anderson to stay at 1B, just go ahead and release Delgado now.

    • metsfan119 says:

Willie’s post-game press conference: “Delgado’s my first baseman. Marlon made some plays, frankly my daughter could’ve made them. He showed today why he is a competent back-up.”

  180. Jay says:

Despite what you guys say, I attribute very very little of the Mets problems to Willie Randolph. Maybe it is my own inherent bias that I think Managers are very over rated in baseball.

I think the problem with this team is unrealistic expectations. I said this at the start of 2007 season and got flamed, but everything went our way in 2006. We have a good team, but not a great team, despite having the highest payroll in the NL. One reason for that was that we had to overpay free agents initially to bring credibility back to the team.

Compounding the problem is the (albeit predictable) regression of Delgado and the unpredicted regression of Reyes. This has left our lineup very dependent on a few players to create and drive in runs.

Surprising as it may sound though, I think Omar has done a great job. I think the Santana trade was and will be a steal, and any objective observer has to be happy with the milledge/church/schneider deal.

The problem is, there is so only so much you can improve your team every year. The Mets are following a very slow upward trend in terms of quality players. After this year, if they can pick up a power bat, and if they can get some contribution from their minor league system in the way of F-Mart or Carp, they’ll be a better team next year, there’s just no doubt about that.

Keep the faith fellow mets fans (and your expectations in check).

    • metsfan119 says:

This team has played at .500 since last May. You think the Mets don’t have the talent to be an above .500 team? And if so, then isn’t that an indictment on the manager?

      • Jay says:

        I don’t, but I respect your opinion.

I think it has more to do with their leadoff hitter having an OBP of around 320 and their cleanup hitter pretty much going into the tank before our eyes.

We can agree we’re not going to give up on Reyes right? And I think enough time has passed that the team will get more serious into replacing Delgado either outside or inside the organization.

        • metsfan119 says:

Ok, well, I respect your opinion as well, I just feel that, because you can’t get rid of your players, sometimes you have to change the overall vibe that the manager sets for the team. Perhaps another manager could wake this team up, because frankly, I think this team is much better than .500.

    • blains2000 says:

I agree with you in regards to Willie. To me the blame lies with the players. They need to do just their jobs.

And I am tired of the the, “They need to be put in the best postion to succeed” or “He can only pitch to left handers” crap. I understand playing the %ages but sometimes a righty has to face a righty and vice versa. Why should that mean automatic failure? Why can someone do something a little unexpected? Why can someone grow some balls and just do their job despite less than optimal conditions?

      • metsfan119 says:

But nothing has changed with the way this team has played, so fair or not, sometimes you have to look at the managerial position to get things jumpstarted.

        • blains2000 says:

Willie will probably go because you can’t fire the players. And I agree that Willie is no mangerial genius but we have seen at least two games where Acta made a questionable decision that cost him runs and ultimately the game vs. the Mets.

And how is it Willie’s fault that no one in this bullepen (save Sanchez and Wagner) can pitch a clean inning?

        • therealsince86 says:

That’s not true, we are just looking for ways to compare it. We already have a bigger winning streak than we did all last season. It’s not fair to Church, Schneider, and most of all Santana for us not to give this team a chance before we doom them.

      • therealsince86 says:

I think the only thing that can be blamed on Willie is that the team seems to have no confidence at all to pull itself out of a slump. That is a manager’s job more than anything else and so far that is what I am more upset with him over. I don’t pretend to know more baseball than he does like many posters on here, who most of have never even played baseball. But I have coached sports that I know well and even some that I nothing about before and have been successful just by getting them through a tough spot.

        • metsfan119 says:

You don’t need a PHD in baseball philosophy to realize this team has been mediocre since last May

        • therealsince86 says:

This team has not even played in May yet so that is quite the feat.

  181. gipper91375 says:

Game in reach…mets pen enters….and does its best to put it out of reach.

Just hurry up and get swept…one series closer to the end of the Willie era.

    • therealsince86 says:

Come on Gipper that is showing that you have more against Willie than you do desire for the Mets to win. We know you hate Willie but do you want the Mets to win this sesaon?

      • gipper91375 says:

C’mon…you’re not the only one allowed to bait by using a bit of tongue-in-cheek.

        • gipper91375 says:

But, you are presenting a conundrum. I do want the mets to win this year. I don’t know if they can. But I do not think they can win with “Brains” as skipper.

Thus, in my opinion, ending the Willie era is a prerequisite for the hoped for winning.

Anyway, have to head out to dinner,…will catch the rest of this loss on my DVR later tonight.

        • therealsince86 says:

Later, I will talk about you as much as I can while you are gone.

    • blains2000 says:

So when Willie is gone all of a suddden Feliciano is gonna figure out how to get someone out?

  182. joelfreak says:

How long do we have to say that :”many a great team has started (place current record here)” before we say that this team needs a wakeup call. Just think about it, if we didn’t play Washington, who got MURDERED by basically everyone they have played, we would be way under .500 right now…Willie needs to go.

    • Dafatone80 says:

I really don’t get how Willie’s the problem.

Bullpen misuse? Look around. Every team has bullpen problems. We’ve got one of the best pens, which is pretty ridiculous to imagine.

Is he to blame for the Carloses?

      • Gina says:

I agree, and I personally think Willie is average, at best, as a manager. Getting rid of Willie isn’t going to fix many problems.

  183. gipper91375 says:

The crowd seems to depressed to bother to boo anymore, nevermind chant for Willie’s head.

  184. therealsince86 says:

You get to count those game you know?

  185. khmustache says:

    we’re yawning too delgado

  186. metschamps says:

OK I just got in and switched on the game – did I just hear correctly that the Mets only have one hit tonite?????

  187. metsfan119 says:

Unfortunately for everyone (included myself) who wants Willie gone, Omar is not stupid, and he knows the second he gets rid of Willie, the guillotine will be repositioned over his neck.

    • gipper91375 says:

True….but that decision will come from the Wilpons, who also know where the guillotine will next be positioned. Given the performance of this lackluster collection of has-beens….perhaps that’s is where the guillotine belongs?

  188. khmustache says:

at least he’s finally taking pitches

  189. rockets212 says:

    DP play for reyes!!!

  190. khmustache says:

damn…even when he hits it hard…when it rains it pours

  191. khmustache says:

    this team…

  192. therealsince86 says:

And that is why Castillo should not try to swing away and drive in runs.

    • almar1965 says:

I know Castillo has gotten a handful of hits the last few games, which pretty much cements his spot in the 2 hole for while in Wilie’s eyes,…but I just want to see Church back in the two-hole again,…just for kicks and too see what happens. Humor us WIllie.

      • therealsince86 says:

Why, Castillo is like the leadoff hitter right now with Reyes OBP under .300.

  193. almar1965 says:

Let’s see, late in the game, down by 3 against the Braves. Looks like the Mets are primed to bend over the rest of the game.

Or they will give up 3 more runs, then come back and score a few when it is too late.

    Choose your torture.

  194. khmustache says:

at least larry is cold tonight

    • ccmetfan says:

I wish Chipper wouldve had some hits to help my fantasy team. If the Mets were gonna lose anyway, I wouldve wanted Chipper to do the damage

  195. blains2000 says:

So if Nationals close it out over the Cubs do the Cubs suck too?

    • Gina says:

This loss would make us 11-11, right at .500. That loss would make them 15-8, still 7 games over .500 with a .652 winning percentage.

      So I would say no.

      • therealsince86 says:

But we learned last night on here that good teams never lose to a bad team like the nationals.

        • blains2000 says:

The Cubs lost to the Nationals on a walk off 2 run HR. Their season has now ended too.

  196. therealsince86 says:

I think I am going to switch over to the Phillies game and root against them. It’s a lot easier.

  197. metsfan119 says:

    At least the Rangers lost…….

  198. Dirtysanchez says:

    missed opportunities

  199. almar1965 says:

    “missed opportunities”

That should be this year’s motto.

  200. khmustache says:

1-2-3 inning…almost forgot what that was

  201. Dirtysanchez says:

    cmon wright……….Lets get it started

  202. WrightsRight says:

just got home….good to see the mets continuing to hit the ball well…

  203. metsfan119 says:

You could put a high school bullpen against the Mets and they would shut them down

  204. almar1965 says:

    …sigh.

Why bother with this team tonight.

    GEEZ!

  205. khmustache says:

the top five all have oh fors…

  206. almar1965 says:

I challenge my softball team of 35+ year olds to a best of 3 vs. the Mets. Omar are you hearing me????!!!!!!

  207. nyjfanjmk says:

    Missing: Mets offense.

  208. scottmetsfan says:

oh goody delgado is gonna pinch hit

  209. scottmetsfan says:

we never saw what he might have done

  210. Dirtysanchez says:

Its just incredible how the braves bullpen has been close to bad as ours and EVERYTIME this year they shut us down…..

    • m00kie says:

the braves telecast showed a stat .. we have yet to come back from a 2 run or larger deficit

ugh.. it’s going to be a long weekend of baseball. I”m seriously considering skipping my May mlb.tv subscription..maybe I’ll actually get some work done, get some sleep, and not be irritated by this baseball team all of the time. (imagine that!)

  211. HITorDIE25 says:

holly f-ing a…what the hell happend to this team. Is there black major going on in the club house?

In all seriousness…Where’s Ashton? Are we on punked?

  212. scottmetsfan says:

there’s a new episode of NUMB3RS at ten oclock on cbs i hear it ROCKS!

  213. Dafatone80 says:

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if Wright goes 0 for the rest of the season and Beltran hits .200, the Mets won’t make the playoffs.

  214. Dirtysanchez says:

    cmon sanchez keep it up

  215. JohanItOver says:

We are a .500 team, the sooner we accept it, the easier it will b

    • m00kie says:

tonight we are .. tomorrow, either sub 500 or above 500

accept what is to be, it will be easier, I promise!

  216. joon8 says:

    And the beat goes on….

  217. cafuq says:

if the mets bats dont wake up soon, expect HoJo to be gone by middle to late May

    • therealsince86 says:

Have been a horrible hitting team since before he got here. I don’t think he is the problem but he has not helped the problem either.

      • almar1965 says:

In fairness though, Reyes’s offensive issues begun when Hojo took over. Not saying he is responsible for Reyes problems, but the previous batting coach supposedly had a huge impact on Reyes’ coming into his own offensively at the time.

Sometimes certain coaches make a difference enough that when they depart it could affect the player somewhat, especially very young ballplayers who are still finding themselves offensively like Reyes.

To tell the truth, I would not shed a tear if Hojo was fired.

        • therealsince86 says:

I don’t have an emotional attachment to any of the Met’s coaches. They can go or stay as long as we win.

        • m00kie says:

I think the metsblog echo chamber was hugely responsible for the firing of rick down, and then we find out this year that he was a huge part of Reyes’ development .. Mets fans deserve what we get.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think you may be right. Even though they may not read Metsblog the fans do and bring it to Shea and to their jobs and to ……
We said last year it was not Down’s fault but someone had to go. It should be the same for Willie this season. You have to keep trying something until it works.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Yes, because firing Rick Down last year worked out so well. uugh….

  218. Dirtysanchez says:

    dirrrrtyyyy
lol the bright spot on in the bullpen

  219. metschamps says:

So when is our next win…er, ooops, I mean, when does Santana pitch again !!!

    • almar1965 says:

With this lineup and bullpen, even that’s not guaranteed. (See: Atlanta and Milwaukee)

  220. almar1965 says:

Damn! They lose this game and they are only 1 game up on the Phils with 4 to go…oh wait!…you mean it’s not September 2007? ‘Cause I can’t tell the !@#$%^&* difference!

    UGH!

  221. Dirtysanchez says:

    thank you ron!!!

  222. WrightsRight says:

Good to see ron darling living in a reality-based world….

  223. Dirtysanchez says:

    gotay got an ovation

  224. atrain311 says:

There’s a silver lining to all of this…if we keep losing changes will HAVE to be made. Winning a little here and there will only prolong the torture.

    • therealsince86 says:

To me there is never a silver lining to lossing. There are no moral victories. I want the Mets to win as many as possible regardless of who the manager is.

    • Gina says:

What changes? They can fire Willie, Omar and every other coach or person in the front office. It won’t change the players we have.

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

I’m sorry but that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. You’d actually rather have Willie fired than to have the mets win. Weak, dude.

  225. joon8 says:

    What did Ron Say?

    • khmustache says:

he mentioned how the mantra of “it’s only april” is beginning to sound just like the “we’re still in 1st place and there’s only a week left” mantra of september

    • Dirtysanchez says:

basically if they take the attiude “its april” or “its too early” they will stay in that mind set and it will carry on the whole season. They need to start believing they are winners and thus they will play like one

  226. khmustache says:

even the former mets can’t hit

    • therealsince86 says:

Only problem is that except for a couple of months last year, he never could. I hope the put him in the field, we may still have a chance that way.

      • khmustache says:

you know, i noticed that, but he was one of those mets that i always liked…he seemed like a nice kid, i know that doesn’t mean s*** on the field, but i do hope he succeeds

  227. Dirtysanchez says:

    welp here we go

  228. breadclock says:

    So, when’s the NFL draft?

  229. Darryl Strawberry says:

Darling said it best about all the “it’s only April talk”.

  230. atrain311 says:

    Delgado…Delgotout

  231. metschamps says:

What?? You’re kidding me – Delgado struck out…no way !

  232. nyjfanjmk says:

    LOSER

  233. Dirtysanchez says:

DAMNNNN delgado got it bad from those 1000 fans still left lol

  234. atrain311 says:

    Somethings got to give.

  235. almar1965 says:

Darling may actually be the smartest man in the entire organization.

Which rules him out for Mets manager.

  236. atrain311 says:

    Can Harold still hit?

  237. khmustache says:

at least they’re going out with a whimper

  238. scottmetsfan says:

jeez, even their faces look so darn hang-dog. they just look whipped! this is some kind of tragedy!

  239. Dirtysanchez says:

    thanks cas. Nice and quick.

  240. WrightsRight says:

Do these guys even know how to it? It’s truly pathetic. I turn on ESPN and I see guys on the Royals driving the ball. These guys are just not that good. Is this a rut? Is it? I’m not so sure…

  241. therealsince86 says:

13-2. That will do it every time.

  242. almar1965 says:

Hudson and Smoltz the next 2 games?

Well, I have been meaning to get things done around the house this weekend.

Someone call me when they get their heads out of their asses.

    • therealsince86 says:

Will do, just leave us your number. And by the way don’t worry about coming back until we call you. Just go enjoy yourself.

  243. Ryan Synagogue says:

Man Delgado looked like a punk with that fastball. Why even bother making excuses, the guy sucks. I appreciate what he did in 06, but its over. Just get Paul Konerko or Adam Dunn. Please.

    Or promote MagiCarp.

  244. Dirtysanchez says:

they really needed this game considering they have not hit hudson and smoltz well……..

  245. breadclock says:

It’s a good thing Omar manned up this off-season and cleaned house by firing Rickey Henderson. This new winning attitude is so refreshing.

  246. almar1965 says:

I love how SNY is totally swiping ESPN effects with Harold Reynolds describing the plays…LOL!

  247. WrightsRight says:

Harold Reynolds: “I think the Braves had a great approach”

    ‘Approach’

Do the Mets even have an ‘approach’ against opposing pitchers? It just seems like they flail at random pitches, stare at good pitches. Maybe all of the money they’ve spent on Citi Field has cut into their video and advanced scouting budget.

  248. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

fire willie. it has to start with that. there’s nothing more to say

  249. washtiger says:

You know it’s bad when you’re getting beaten by the likes of Kelly Johnson, Felipe Lopez, and Ronny Cedeno. Household names all! Wanna be star, wanna break out of a slump, no worries, the Mets are next on the schedule!

This is frustrating! I’ve been a fan since the early ’70’s and I’ve suffered through some bad years. Certain teams in certain years you knew would be bad. I just don’t get it with this crew…

I posted it earlier, and I’m actually half serious — anyone think these guys are mailing it in to get Willie fired?

    • WrightsRight says:

Kelly Johnson’s been a Met killer the past two seasons…

    • almar1965 says:

I don’t think they are, but if they were, at least they were actually trying something as opposed to what we are seeing on the field.

    • therealsince86 says:

Are you really serious? These players want to win as badly as you want them to win. They just can’t get out of their own way.

  250. almar1965 says:

Reynolds talking about how Cox came out to protect his pitcher.

Say what you want about the ol’ wife beating curmudgeon, at least he has the balls to put himself on the line for his players and that’s why they run through walls for him.

    Hint, hint.

    • therealsince86 says:

And that’s why his team has just about the same record as we do and why they were the best team in the division the last 2 years. It has nothing to do with having talent.

      • almar1965 says:

That’s not what I meant. I was not talking about W-L record. Yes they have about the same record but do you think Cox would even allow his players, whether they have the talent or not, whether they lose or not, to sleepwalk? I mean when the Mets lose, they seem to go down with a wimper very quickly.

That bothers me most of all.

Willie says in the post-game that the team is not in a slump.

Mazzilli was dumbfounded by that comment, along with millions of other Mets fans I assume.

        • therealsince86 says:

So If Cox is not allowing them to sleep walk then what is the problem? Why are they not winning?

        • therealsince86 says:

As for Willie’s comment about the slump, that is just dumb if he said that. It’s not a major slump yet but it is certainly a slump.

        • almar1965 says:

I don’t know. I don’t follow the Braves enough to say, but once again, this has nothing to do with winning or losing. It is a team personality/psychology thing. ANd when it gets to that point, it can manifest into a season long thing.

      • Don Logan says:

When was the last time Willie defended one of his players? Players notice that. Like that Brewer game 2 weekends ago. Schneider and Church, both safe on plays at first. Willie couldn’t even come out and pretend to have his players backs. I’m not sayin get run as often as Cox. But at least act like you have their back.

        • almar1965 says:

I know this has nothing to about defending players, but how about even trying to question Derek Lee grabbing the foul ball illegally while standing on third? It would not have hurt to try, even if he was not sure about it, especially with the game on the line at that point.

But I get the feeling that when Willie does run out of the dugout, he is being pushed out by Peterson.

  251. atrain311 says:

As I wrote earlier…somethings got to give.

    • therealsince86 says:

I agree with that. I just don’t know what it is. I don’t know if it will take Willie being fired, Delgado being cut, a 5+run comeback win against the Braves, a brawl. I have no idea but you are right something has to. Even though it is only April if we get behind a bunch of games I am affraid that it will snowball and ruin the season before Memorial Day even gets here.

      • atrain311 says:

I really hear what you’re saying. I don’t know what it is either, but I do know that we can’t just keep on keeping on like this. It will only make things worse psychologically. Now, I’m no guru, I would have thought that getting Johan was enough of a jolt, but it is clear that we are still in some kind of funk and maybe we need some real help.

        • therealsince86 says:

Thing is like I said if it comes from the outside it can only come from Delgado or Willie. I would be on board with getting rid of both if I actually thought it would fix anything.

  252. washtiger says:

Nats just beat the Cubs. Nieves walkoff 2 run HR bottom 9th.

  253. Ryan Synagogue says:

I don’t own the team. I don’t own anything about it. I just know that “New Manager” is the greatest product ever for the appearance of your thinning offense. Stop hiding your players underneath these Randolphs. Stop denying that your bullpen looks bad and do something about it. You can be on the road to fuller thicker offense….RIGHT NOW

  254. metsfan119 says:

It’s not even fun to watch this team anymore. At least in the mid-nineties there was a lot of young talent that we, perhaps naively, thought might have amounted to something. These are for the most part the same veteran cast of characters who took part in the disgrace from last year.

    • Don Logan says:

haha c’mon man, therealsince86 says we have to get this team a chance. that they’re a different team.

      • blains2000 says:

Fine, don’t listen to therealsince86. Give up on the season. Get a hobby and go on knittingblog.com or something. Don’t waste your time watching the games.

There are a ton of people who seem to WANT the Mets to be bad so it makes THEM look right, which I don’t understand.

        • metsfan119 says:

Nobody WANTS the Mets to be bad, but it wouldn’t be such a bad idea for you and ‘86 to take a break from playing Mr. Devils Advocate every once and awhile and let fans vent.

        • therealsince86 says:

This is a blog did not start asjust a venting post. Of course we are going to play devil’s advocate. That’s what a blog is supposed to be, people responding to each other comments. If you are just posting on here to vent and do not expect anyone to react to your post then you are on the wrong blog.

        • blains2000 says:

I’m actually not playing Devil’s advocate. I just don’t think that everything from the price of oil to the subprime mortgage problem is Willie’s fault.

I actually think the PLAYERS, the ones being paid millions, need to play better.

Look Charlie Manuel is STILL an idiot even though his team won the division last year. But his PLAYERS played better.

        • Don Logan says:

Yea I root for the mets to do bad, that makes a lot of sense. My point is that turning a blind’s eye to what is becoming an obvious pattern and saying this year is simply a new team, is way too naive at this point. The carryover from last season will continue to linger until the team has a new leader. That was why Willie had to go after last season. This team is the same nucleus as last season and it’s a .500 team since last May.

        • therealsince86 says:

I agree get rid of Randolph. But as soon as that happens will you stop being negative all the time? Will you say it’s a different team than last year every time the go into a slump or will you just still compare them to each other just like you compared last year’s team to 06 and find another person to blame.

    • atrain311 says:

Is it possible that a collapse of that magnitude can scar a team so bad that some players cannot get over it until they move on to another ballclub? I know this sounds crazy, but we had to get over Atlanta owning us in their ballpark by essentially having all new players who weren’t on those teams who got whooped all of those times in Hotlanta.

      • metsfan119 says:

I don’t know, but it’s the same story day in day out. They may get a couple of 2 or 3 game winning streaks together every once in awhile, but it all comes down to a bad bullpen and an offense that consistently goes to sleep in unison. It’s at the point now where if the Mets get behind by more than a run I have no faith in them coming back…at all…

        • therealsince86 says:

I agree with that entire post.

        • atrain311 says:

Yeah, and I hate that feeling. In 2006, it felt like we always had a chance. I hate to harp on old $hit, but that season feels like a lifetime away now.

        • trippingac says:

The weird thing is that the bullpen really is not bad besides Heilman and Sosa (Sanchez will soon assume the 8th inning role). The starting pitching is decent enough. And the offense has 6 talented hitters. I have no idea what is wrong with this team – but I totally agree – once they are behind, I have no confidence in them anymore. I think they are all mentally disabled after last season – I really think that might be possible.

*sigh* I love the Mets, but I can’t take much more of this.

        • therealsince86 says:

I still say a lot of it goes hand in hand. The players have that feeling because that’s all people talk about is the losing so when things go wrong it snowballs. Then when it does we just get more down on the team and put more pressure on them. It really bothered me last September when in a race down to the wire fans were booing the players instead of trying to do anything to help them win. Now it seems like they sit on their hands and say wait till we lose wait till we are losing, we are going to blow this one and then start booing when it happens. I think the players will not get over it until we do.

        • metsfan119 says:

Do you honestly think if fans weren’t booing the Mets would start playing well?

        • therealsince86 says:

No, i don’t think so I guess. Maybe? I have no idea. But if the Mets were playing well there would be no boos. I think it goes hand in hand and has a correlation to each other. That’s why there is a homefield advantage. I think in 06 you heard very few boos even if we weren’t playing well. It was so new to be in that place that we were cheering and pulling for them all the time. If they were down 4 we still thought they could win and would cheer our hearts out. However last season it was like well we expect to win so we won’t cheer the good because that is expected and if you mess up we will boo because you are supposed to win.
So yes I think if the fans had a better vibe it COULD rub off on the team. Let me ask you this, if Willie was fired tomorrow would you start cheering the team on and be positive all of a sudden?

        • metsfan119 says:

I’m going to cheer when the Mets give me something to cheer about. The changing of the manager has nothing to do with fan reaction and I’d hope the Mets wouldn’t make the decision based off of that. The Mets are dead right now. Would getting rid of Willie (who I don’t think is a good manager) help them get better? I don’t know, maybe. But what exactly do we risk by getting rid of Willie? If the Mets continue to play bad, then so be it, but sometimes you need to make a change for change sake. I think this movement to blame fan reaction for the Mets play is the worst kind of copout for the pathetic play of this team. These guys are professionals, if they don’t want to get booed by a fanbase that is rightly upset with them, then they should play with a chip on their shoulder. The burden is on them, not us.

        • therealsince86 says:

During September when we were leading the division didn’t we have a reason to cheer? How do you boo a team in the last week of a pennant race?

        • therealsince86 says:

And what I think is even worse than the copout you mentioned is this sense of entitlement that fans now have. Like the players owe them something. Instead of cheering their team on to a win they only cheer when they do something spectacular and boo every mistake.

        • NY Cuban says:

I know I would be totally positive. I know it would be a re-birth of hope if he was gone. I have absolutely no faith with Willie as my manager.

        • therealsince86 says:

I am not saying I do. But tell the truth if we fired Willie and won 3 games and then went on to lose 5 you would not be saying here we go again.

  255. can_of_corn says:

This team, as currently constructed, will not win more than 85 games. You can take that to the bank. And, as much as it pains me to admit it, next year’s team will be WORSE.

We had our window in 2006-2007 — and we didn’t come through. We’re the third-best team in — maybe — the fifth-best division in baseball.

.500 will be a struggle. We have a slightly above-average staff, a sub-par lineup, and nothing special in the coaching department. If everyone gets healthy, we might win 91 games and bow out in the first round.

In short: hard to get excited.

(PS — the Rangers loss is not helping matters)

But next to Delgado, all the pieces that made ‘06 the year it was are for the most part in place. So to me it comes down to the character of the players and the manager. Their starting staff is actually better than in ‘06. It’s just so frustrating, I don’t know what’s wrong with this team.

      • therealsince86 says:

“But next to Delgado all the pieces….” Delgado was a huge piece of that and he does not have that anymore yet we have not picked up a true big bat to make up for it.

        • gomets6091 says:

therein lies the problem. We lost a HUGE piece of that 2006 offense and basically replaced it with nothing. Beltran’s also regressed a bit since 2006, as has Reyes.

As someone mentioned earlier, this team just isn’t fun to watch. It reminds me of the early 2001 and the 2002 Mets. I’m a longtime fan, and I’m used to losing. Losing isn’t so bad, as long as you’re expecting it. 2003 and 2004 were enjoyable seasons for me, because we brought up a lot of young talent and were a fun team to root for, even though they were pretty bad. This team SHOULD be good, they SHOULD be winning, but they’re not, and that is no fun to root for. I’m not saying I’m gonna stop watching or stop cheering, because I still believe this team has a 25-5 stretch in it if they really want it, but that belief is what makes all the losing so hard.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why would next year’s team be worse? All the aging Vets contracts are coming up and we have a ton of money to spend around a good core of players.

  256. ccmetfan says:

I wonder if the Mets miss Julio Franco’s wisdom. They were a good team when he was around. Probably doesn’t matter anyway.

  257. metz1 says:

the mets cant hit! we need another big bat! how do we get it? crucial times call for crucial measures! if i had to id trade ollie and a prospect right now!

    • therealsince86 says:

Ollie in his contract year would not get you much in return and who on our team would take his spot?

      • metz1 says:

jonathan niese /but i disagree ollie has to at least bring a decent 1st baseman.

        • therealsince86 says:

So you want a rotation of Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, FIggy and Neise in a pennant race. Also, what “decent 1B” do you think you would get for Perez in a contract year?

      • metz1 says:

We have to do something before we end up in 4th place! but i would rather see a rookie pitching knowing he can get better than someone like el duque whos career is almost over.

        • therealsince86 says:

Elduque is not even pitching and may not this season. What does he have to do with anything?

        • metz1 says:

im just saying this because something has to be done even if its wille yelling at a bunch of overpaid players!

        • therealsince86 says:

I don’t think Willie yelling at them would help this group at all. See my post above I don’t know what it is but I agree something has to be done just to break this negative vibe from the players and fans.

        • grotesmask says:

Here’s the point: we’re still playing in a collapse.

The more players and fans declaim the collapse is in the past, the more this whole new season feels like a long, slow collapse. If we start winning and dominating, the collapse will crop up as something like a bad joke and not much more. Every day now is flashback-city.

          God, it sucks!

    • atrain311 says:

I would rather suffer through a cruddy season like this one to have a brighter future than trade away our future and still end up having this season suck. I don’t think one player is the answer, but then again… I don’t know what the answer is.

  258. metz1 says:

A new mgr wouldnt hurt either!

  259. metz1 says:

i wonder what your thinking now omar!

  260. metz1 says:

the only good thing is the 2008 amatuer draft is coming up! select your players carefully !

  261. metz1 says:

also whats up with jose reyes? does he even have a stolen base yet?

  262. metz1 says:

when the mets lose i feel it maybe im too emotional but i really want to see them win.

  263. metz1 says:

these mets[2008] do not seem like the same team i saw in 2006 something is not right here.

  264. NY Cuban says:

Do you think Julio Franco could manage this team? This is a real question. I know its out there, but he did have the ear of alot of people in the clubhouse and we all know he is Omar’s guy. I dont know if he is a good fit, but I’m throwing it out there. The best idea I have heard so far is Rudy Jaramillo.

    • therealsince86 says:

I really think Carter would bring that fire that the fans want so bad, (not sure the players want or need it but it might help the fanbase and the negative vibe). I am just affraid that people would view Rudy as too much of an Omar man and would just start venting on Omar all the time then.

  265. metz1 says:

as for 1st baseman lyle overbay or lance berkman billy butler from kc but dont know how good defensively he would be

    • therealsince86 says:

You actually think that the Astro’s would trade Lance Berkman for Perez? Comeon. Or the Jays would trade their starting 1B for a rental. Get a grip here. You are not getting a starter for Perez in contract year.

  266. metz1 says:

also jeff larish a1st baseman for the tigers in aaa this year. I think he hit 28 hrs last year in aa. according to basball america very good defensively.

    • therealsince86 says:

Now if you want to start talking about AAA prospects then he and Kendry Morales might be something to look at. However, Perez would not be needed to get them. You could prob. get them for something like Heilman and a prospect instead of trading a key piece to your team.

      • altru426 says:

we already have 2 very good first base prospects, how about we give them a shot first and not trade anyone else away? just a thought…

  267. metz1 says:

the ” the kid” might be the one hmm.

  268. metz1 says:

then again maybe its time to bring up mike carp to play 1st

  269. NY Cuban says:

    Carter
    Jaramillo
    Mazilli
    HoJo

Under contract, so doubtful (and probably not the right fit):
    Guillen
    Acta

    • therealsince86 says:

I dont like Acta at all. I have watched him already this season and he is much worse than Willie managing his pen.
Hojo would not help at all it needs to be someone that was not involved with the team last year.
Lee and Carter would be ok I think but you did bring up an interesting name.
Guillen might be perfect for this team, can a manager resign and go somewhere else during the season? Maybe next year.

      • NY Cuban says:

I think Guillen would be perfect (short term). I think he is too nuts, but the shock factor works for a season or 2. Then it becomes old and people start to tune him out. Thats his problem in Chicago, but the man does know baseball, and I think he would relate well to the all the latin players. And he is Venezuelan, so maybe thats a plus with Santana.

  270. metz1 says:

we should have signed carlos lee when he was a free agent

  271. Sasseroni says:

I don’t know what’s worse: watching the Mets suck that hard or living in Braves country. That was probably the most hapless they’ve looked all year. Jurrjens didn’t even deserve to get 3 runs against him, the ump gave the Mets a nice little gift that ended up meaning nothing.

It’s time Willie goes. No more doubt, no more wondering. The man has burned out his candle and it’s time to get someone with some passion into the job. I’d love to see Carter get a shot, at least he’s enthusiastic. Besides, his ties to the 86 team would be sweet to have around since they’ve basically excommunicated most of that team.

If they pass on him, I’d be all for Davey Johnson getting another shot, or even Bobby V. Go get someone with brain for baseball, someone who can kick some @$$ and take some names and get something out of this roster.

    • therealsince86 says:

I agreed with your entire post until the last part. Davey as much as I love him is 103 years old and Bobby V will and should never be hired by the Mets again.

      • Sasseroni says:

If they came in and the team responded, I doubt anyone would care too much. Of course, both would be short term answers until they found a better guy for the long term.

Not that baseball really has a long term anymore, minus Bobby Cox.

And as long as Steve Phillips stays far, far away, I wouldn’t blink…..

  272. metz1 says:

no matter what happens i believe we need another big bat!

    • therealsince86 says:

I don’t like relying on the old man but our best shot at that right now is Alou. After that, we are not getting that bat this season before the end of July and the only reason we would then is if Alou gets injured again.

  273. metz1 says:

I cant completely put down Omar. He did get us santana but something more has to be done even if its firing wille!

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Omar has come through for this team in a lot of way, and he did make some bad moves too. Overall I would say he has been a very good GM, although I don’t care for the way everything slides off of him like teflon.

Having said all of that, let’s not go too nuts over him getting us Santana.

      John Maine? Absolutely.
      Oliver Perez? Sure.

Santana? Love him. But he didn’t get to us because of a brilliant GM. Johan is our hired hitman, and that’s the only way he got here.

  274. upstatemetfan says:

jjurrrrjennnss should of had a no hitter

  275. metz1 says:

I just hope last year is not lingering in the mets heads!

  276. metz1 says:

this team is not the same for some reason and ts obvious!

  277. metz1 says:

    bye bye willie!

  278. therealsince86 says:

I am not agreeing or disagreeing with any of your post but are you trying to break a record of most 1 sentence post?

  279. metz1 says:

this team needs a wally b. or a ”nails type player” and a mgr to match!

  280. metz1 says:

no sorry but i guess im just frustrated with the mets i wish something good would happen. thing is why is it that the marlins seem to beat the braves so easily yet the mets cant?

  281. upstatemetfan says:

i miss bobby v. we would of won a penant with him at the helm.

  282. AlreadyMissShea says:

Just got home from the game.

All I can say is… wow.
    Just… wow.

There are problems. Some can be fixed this year and some can’t. But some changes have to come soon. They can’t just limp through the whole season like this, and so far there’s nothing to suggest that that’s not where it’s heading.

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

      AlreadyMissShea,

Oh man, I hear ya. This is going to be a long long season. All the problems stem from the offense. I know everyone wants to point a finger at the bullpen, but exactly how many times do the relievers come in with a lead?? Besides the 5 game win streak, I can’t remember one. The offense is the problem and here’s what worries me the most:

-It looks like we’ve seen the best of Reyes.

-Carlos Delgado is DONE (stick a fork in him)

-Carlos Beltran is Mr. Anti-clutch, you need a big hit, you’ve come to the wrong place

-Opposing teams are going to walk Wright 200 times this year, why would they bother pitching to him with the Carlos’ batting behind him.

The only hope this team has is if Wright and Church combine for 65-70 HR and about 250 RBI.

      • altru426 says:

you know what i was thinking along the same lines…wright has walked once in each game that he has gone hitless since the phillies series…why would pitchers give him anything to hit? he’s seeing breaking pitches all over the place…beltran, and the rest of the team have to catch fire…no one has any protection

  283. krumbledkookie says:

This team is no better than average.

    In other words, it sucks.

I just can’t figure out why.

    • upstatemetfan says:

because willie is on denial about delgado. because willie keeps putting the suckiest pitcher in the majors on the mound day after day, it seems like. because willie’s team needed to get to a decent start and they are not.. and because they are trying TOO HARD!

  284. metz1 says:

i still think the mets need a no nonsense mgr that wont put up with bad performances from his players.

  285. metsfanatic says:

Team is a .500 team. HOJO needs to GO! Peterson needs to GO! Willie needs to GO!

  286. InsaneMetsFan says:

I haven’t actually enjoyed watching a Mets game since Game 1 of the 2006 NLCS. Every game, even the ones they lead by 3 and 4 runs, is like waiting for the other shoe to drop.

    • Prismo says:

I think that’s putting it a bit far. You didn’t enjoy a single game last season? I find that impossible…

But I haven’t enjoyed too many games this year so far; even most of the wins are painful.

      • InsaneMetsFan says:

You’re right, in 2007 that romp of the Cardinals in the first series of the year was quite enjoyable, all down hill from there.

  287. upstatemetfan says:

    Isiah Randolph needs to go…..now!

  288. playmaker3128 says:

The problems i have with willie is that he’s unwilling to change. He is sometimes much to loyal to his veterans. He sticks with pitchers and keeps throwing them out there day in and day out (see mota last year). Even some of his other in game desicions, like the squeeze or running the wheel in bunt situations. Things that other teams do that i rarely see us try.

When willie came up and first got the managers job he was a new voice. He had that joe torre mentality and he never panicked. He got us to within on game of the world series. However it seems that that same mentality is getting a little old. Dare i say it, Willie is starting to sound a little like Art Howe did when he was here.

Idk what it is, but something needs to change. I’m not saying fire willie. But if this horrible play continues then i couldn’t argue with it. If we get swept by the braves, come monday theres gonna be some rumors swirling.

  289. NY Cuban says:

How about Felipe Alou to manage?

  290. AlreadyMissShea says:

One thing that I feel like Willie is doing, and anyone can correct me if they disagree… I feel like this is little league and everybody is getting to play in almost every game.

By the end of the night Delgado was pinch hitting. I’m guessing he was the only one available in the 9th? (I was at the game, but didn’t have my radio and didn’t keep score)

Earlier in the game, there’s the double switch and Endy is in. Fine. Good move. But what was the deal with Easley pinch hitting for Marlon Anderson and replacing him at first? Did something happen to Marlon? Maybe I did miss something. So Willie burned through the whole bench by the end of the night, and now the one guy who should be sitting at least for the moment is up in the 9th.

And in that spot, Delgado is going to have one chance at a good at bat when he’s been struggling to have a good at bat in four or five chances. How is that going to work out? Exactly like it did work out. And of course he’s booed out of the stadium.

I know I’m ranting, but it just seems like we’re seeing a lot of moves just for the sake of making moves. If I’m wrong, I’m sorry. It’s been a long night.

  291. InsaneMetsFan says:

    April 25-27 – Braves Sweep (11-13)
    April 28-30 – Mets take 2 of 3 from Pirates (13-14)
    May 1-3 – Dbacks Sweep (13-17)
    May 5-7 – Lose 2 of 3 to Dodgers (14-19)
May 9-15 – Mets go 4-3 vs. Red and Nats (18-22)
    May 16-18 – Yanks Sweep (18-25)
    May 20-22 – Braves sweep again (18-28)
    May 23 WILLIE GETS FIRED!

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Well the Dbacks are going to be tough to beat. The Yankees have their own problems. You won’t at least give the Mets ONE win vs. the Braves? :)

But no way Willie gets fired. He’s the manager this year. I can’t see that changing no matter what.

    • jamie says:

glass isn’t even half empty with you, is it? why do you even watch?

  292. steve333 says:

This team is just all dead weight.
Wright needs some protection in the line-up, Reyes is just not doing squat, both Carlos’s suck, Castillo is a waste of space.
Church and Schneider have both played well.

This team is mediocre at best and thats Omar’s doing. I will give him some credit for the Milledge trade, but almost everything else he has done has just sucked. Signing free agents does not count.

This team needs a new GM and a new Manager, not necessarily in that order.
We could have had Jocketty as GM if Wilpon had the guts to dump Omar.

Now, go out and get Wally Backman……………………NOW

  293. CaliMetsFan says:

Yeah the Mets didn’t play well tonight but I am so sick and tired of all of the Chicken Littles on here who yell “The Sky is Falling” each time the Mets lose.

    • gipper91375 says:

Update: the sky already fell, they call it The Collapse for a reason.

      • CaliMetsFan says:

That was last season. I get so tired of hearing all of the whiners on this site when this team loses. So many of the same idiots who were hooting and hollering just last weekend about how great the Mets were after they took 2 of 3 against the Phils.

Its freaking April. Both the Braves and Phils have their issues and haven’t gotten out to super starts. I could care less about the Fish because any team with a stiff like Hendrickson as their #1 starter isn’t even worth taking seriously over the course of the season. You would think from so many of the stupid comments on here that the Mets are 5 or 6 games below .500 and 7 or 8 back in the East.

        • gipper91375 says:

Yup….all the whiners and stupid commenters like…. Ron Darling who said tonight that all the “it’s only April” refrains sound an awful lot like the “it’s no big deal, we can’t lose this – we’re still in first with only a week left”.

C’mon man. Last season IS this season, at least so far. Does that mean they cannot possibly turn things around? No. But, does this look like a WS championship caliber team to you?

Ok, so we’re roughly on par with two other contenders for one of the worst divisions in the majors. Whoopity doo. I mean, is that really the bar you are setting for this team? After 21 seasons since the last championship and a season after The Collapse…that is simply not good enough.

This franchise will never, ever be able to turn the page on The Collapse until somebody is finally held accountable for it. It will have to begin where it should have in October, with Willie. That may not be enough….but it’d be a start.

  294. sraman80 says:

I’m posting this here, since comments on the other post are disabled (sidenote: it seems rather arbitrary which entries disable comments and which do not).

Anyway, can we PLEASE stop interviewing other team’s bloggers? Inevitably, they all seem to punk us as a team and these boners who interview them simply sound like complete pushovers. Even the Nationals blogger comes off as punking the Mets. It’s ludicrous. The novelty of hearing about other bloggers is gone. Let’s end this sh*t now.

Trust me, it’s only going to get worse when we are battling the Nats for last place.

    • jamie says:

what’s up, dr. scaredypants. One of the better features of this blog is its fan interaction with other teams. Grow a set and quit crying…plenty of time for turned tables.

  295. CaliMetsFan says:

Another foolish point is all this talk about trading for some big name 1B. At this point, the only 1B the Mets could get would be a backup-type guy or a guy who gets released like Thomas.

I don’t have much faith that Delgado is going to turn it around much in the long haul but the Mets have to see what they have with him. If he still isn’t hitting worth a lick in another 3-4 weeks, then the Mets have to think about making a move for a left-handed bat that can play 1B or getting creative (maybe see if Alou can play some 1B).

    • gipper91375 says:

There, I agree with you…though I doubt alou would be the answer as that would trying to teach a very old dog new tricks. But this whole “just go get [insert ridiculously good 1B here]” is silly.

Delgado gets dropped another spot in the order when alou gets back….if Alou gets back. If Delgrampa is still horrid by mid-end of May, you call up Abreu to platoon and try to move Carp along while keeping Omar busy with the whole Kendy Morales type deal that therealsince86 was discussing.

      • gomets6091 says:

what, you mean we can’t trade Carp and Sosa for Pujols. Why not, we’re the NEW YORK METS.

  296. metsfanmurph says:

This team is unwatchable. They are built like a 70’s team without the ugly uniforms and moustaches. The new way to construct a team is to have a good lineup and a strong bullpen. The Mets have a good rotation (well when Pelfrey and Perez are throwing it into the same area code), an awful bullpen, and an average lineup.

The regular season 06 and 99 Mets had “it”. That ability to come from behind and grind it out. The 07 Mets were the anti-06 Mets and the 08 Mets don’t seem to have it either. Ron Darling made a great point last night about how dangerous negative mantras are. I heard from the losing streak in June last year until the last day of September the phrase, “Well we are still in first place.” Everyone who followed that team last year knew it was headed for disaster. Everyone following this years team hears the mantra, “It’s only April” and we can all see if changes aren’t made this is going to be a very long year.

  297. sellitman says:

This is a Five Hundred team. It was last year an is this year. No one here should expect much more than than. If they make the play-offs it should be considered a miracle.

  298. ho-go says:

I wouldn’t look for massive changes any time soon. Fans may care about winning and losing (mostly winning), but ownership cares about profit, and the kind of shakeup the Mets need is going to cost money — lots of it. Omar has bobbled the ball in putting together this team, and Willie may be a decent leader, but not with this lineup of players, many of whom seem unable to muster focus whether in field or on the mound or at the plate I agree with all those who say the games are increasingly unwatchable. There’s no drama, no hero, no point.

  299. Mingo says:

    Two hits.
    12 homers for the year.
    Mendoza line.
    0 for 18.

Better start hitting. This was the 5-hole pitcher, not an ace. You get those today and tomorrow.

  300. jimyager says:

Hey, its early and we still have alot of baseball to play. The Braves are looking real good and could be the team to beat. We had 3 run walked in and they had the heart the fight back and beat us. They played good baseball and when the going got tough they got going and we went home with another L. Let’s get use to this guys, unless the Mets just “flick on the switch” this is the way our season is going to be. We cant get a hit off a rookie pitcher, he is in trouble and the bases are loaded for 5 consecutive batters and we only score 3 runs. Then give up yet another HR? Why are the Mets not hitting any HRs? What is wrong with this team? I will tell you , ACCOUNTABILY. After last year nobody was called on the carpet over the collpase and its back to buisness as usual. For those of you counting we are now a 500 team. We won 5 in a row lost 2 won 1 lost 2 and we could be sweept putting us at 6-6. That is not the way to build momentum and win a division. WILLIE MUST GO !!!

    • Mingo says:

Last I saw, Willie hadn’t swung a bat in quite a few years. This team has no pop. No matter how much they pitch, you can’t win games with two hits. The game they beat Washington they scored most of their runs on infield dribblers. They can not hit.
Reyes hasn’t hit and he hasn’t got on base since July of last year. Castillo is providing the only offense right now. How bad is that?
Remember last year this team fired Rick Downs because they couldn’t hit. It hasn’t changed. They need to get some bats or start learning to scratch out runs.
I know its premature, but at this point, they can’t do worse with Mike Carp in the lineup. If they can only get two hits against a guy that was not even near the top of his game, they can’t hit.

I also am a fan of Willie’s but he isn’t doing a damned thing to ignite this team. He expects veterans to act like vets and fix their mistakes. He isn’t Joe Torre and the Mets don’t have the best hitters like the Yankees. If it takes firing Willie to make this team move, the Mets need to do it.
I want to see a fire under this team.

Bring on Wally Backman as manager. He may be controversial but Shea will accept him. And there is no doubt in my mind he will light a fire under this team.
What else bothers me is that Willie just doesn’t go after the umps for anything. Being cool is a personality trait, its not necessarily a good managerial trait. You have to show you will do whatever it takes to win and Willie ain’t doing it.

  301. mets19 says:

Signing alou is like taking 8million dollars and lighting it on fire. Even if he comes back, he MUST play first because we cant have Delgado there anymore. The team is too dependent on Alou, thats why we should have just spent money on a YOUNG player that can hit.

What do you think of Lee Mazzilli as manager?
