Signing alou is like taking 8million dollars and lighting it on fire. Even if he comes back, he MUST play first because we cant have Delgado there anymore. The team is too dependent on Alou, thats why we should have just spent money on a YOUNG player that can hit.

What do you think of Lee Mazzilli as manager?

what, you mean we can't trade Carp and Sosa for Pujols. Why not, we're the NEW YORK METS.

therein lies the problem. We lost a HUGE piece of that 2006 offense and basically replaced it with nothing. Beltran's also regressed a bit since 2006, as has Reyes.

As someone mentioned earlier, this team just isn't fun to watch. It reminds me of the early 2001 and the 2002 Mets. I'm a longtime fan, and I'm used to losing. Losing isn't so bad, as long as you're expecting it. 2003 and 2004 were enjoyable seasons for me, because we brought up a lot of young talent and were a fun team to root for, even though they were pretty bad. This team SHOULD be good, they SHOULD be winning, but they're not, and that is no fun to root for. I'm not saying I'm gonna stop watching or stop cheering, because I still believe this team has a 25-5 stretch in it if they really want it, but that belief is what makes all the losing so hard.

Last I saw, Willie hadn't swung a bat in quite a few years. This team has no pop. No matter how much they pitch, you can't win games with two hits. The game they beat Washington they scored most of their runs on infield dribblers. They can not hit.
Reyes hasn't hit and he hasn't got on base since July of last year. Castillo is providing the only offense right now. How bad is that?
Remember last year this team fired Rick Downs because they couldn't hit. It hasn't changed. They need to get some bats or start learning to scratch out runs.
I know its premature, but at this point, they can't do worse with Mike Carp in the lineup. If they can only get two hits against a guy that was not even near the top of his game, they can't hit.

I also am a fan of Willie's but he isn't doing a damned thing to ignite this team. He expects veterans to act like vets and fix their mistakes. He isn't Joe Torre and the Mets don't have the best hitters like the Yankees. If it takes firing Willie to make this team move, the Mets need to do it.
I want to see a fire under this team.

Bring on Wally Backman as manager. He may be controversial but Shea will accept him. And there is no doubt in my mind he will light a fire under this team.
What else bothers me is that Willie just doesn't go after the umps for anything. Being cool is a personality trait, its not necessarily a good managerial trait. You have to show you will do whatever it takes to win and Willie ain't doing it.

Hey, its early and we still have alot of baseball to play. The Braves are looking real good and could be the team to beat. We had 3 run walked in and they had the heart the fight back and beat us. They played good baseball and when the going got tough they got going and we went home with another L. Let's get use to this guys, unless the Mets just "flick on the switch" this is the way our season is going to be. We cant get a hit off a rookie pitcher, he is in trouble and the bases are loaded for 5 consecutive batters and we only score 3 runs. Then give up yet another HR? Why are the Mets not hitting any HRs? What is wrong with this team? I will tell you , ACCOUNTABILY. After last year nobody was called on the carpet over the collpase and its back to buisness as usual. For those of you counting we are now a 500 team. We won 5 in a row lost 2 won 1 lost 2 and we could be sweept putting us at 6-6. That is not the way to build momentum and win a division. WILLIE MUST GO !!!

Two hits.
12 homers for the year.
Mendoza line.
0 for 18.

Better start hitting. This was the 5-hole pitcher, not an ace. You get those today and tomorrow.

I wouldn't look for massive changes any time soon. Fans may care about winning and losing (mostly winning), but ownership cares about profit, and the kind of shakeup the Mets need is going to cost money -- lots of it. Omar has bobbled the ball in putting together this team, and Willie may be a decent leader, but not with this lineup of players, many of whom seem unable to muster focus whether in field or on the mound or at the plate I agree with all those who say the games are increasingly unwatchable. There's no drama, no hero, no point.

This is a Five Hundred team. It was last year an is this year. No one here should expect much more than than. If they make the play-offs it should be considered a miracle.

This team is unwatchable. They are built like a 70's team without the ugly uniforms and moustaches. The new way to construct a team is to have a good lineup and a strong bullpen. The Mets have a good rotation (well when Pelfrey and Perez are throwing it into the same area code), an awful bullpen, and an average lineup.

The regular season 06 and 99 Mets had "it". That ability to come from behind and grind it out. The 07 Mets were the anti-06 Mets and the 08 Mets don't seem to have it either. Ron Darling made a great point last night about how dangerous negative mantras are. I heard from the losing streak in June last year until the last day of September the phrase, "Well we are still in first place." Everyone who followed that team last year knew it was headed for disaster. Everyone following this years team hears the mantra, "It's only April" and we can all see if changes aren't made this is going to be a very long year.

There, I agree with you...though I doubt alou would be the answer as that would trying to teach a very old dog new tricks. But this whole "just go get [insert ridiculously good 1B here]" is silly.

Delgado gets dropped another spot in the order when alou gets back....if Alou gets back. If Delgrampa is still horrid by mid-end of May, you call up Abreu to platoon and try to move Carp along while keeping Omar busy with the whole Kendy Morales type deal that therealsince86 was discussing.
