Carlos Delgado makes me sick.

I think the Raiders should draft him this weekend, it would fit with their early 2000 team strategy to acquire aging players who used to be good. They were relatively successful with this strategy, you may recall.

C’mon Raiders! Take this abomination off our hands! Delgado could kick for you guys, so he doesn’t kick our season down the tubes!

Let’s Go Al Davis!

While I agree with your selfish reasons to plea for the Raiders to take Delgado. I don’t think they’ll do it.

It makes way too much sense for Al Davis to draft him.

So true.

Alas, at least he knows his sun glasses will never be in danger of falling to the ground. Falling from his face and hanging from his neck, maybe, but falling to the ground? Never.

Here’s to your sensible preparation for the worst, Al Davis.

Nor will it ever bee too windy for Mr. Davis.

I still think there is an outside shot they will draft Jorge Sosa or Aaron Heilman. They’re good at throwing the long ball.

Good at throwing the game but the long ball?

I’ve read the buzz regarding their eye towards Heilman and Sosa. Mel Kiper is all over it - although he notes the Raiders would then be pigeonholed into drafting a player from Minnesota, whereas Heil and Jorge’ only throw gopher balls. Raider’s brass are just concerned about the injury concerns especially with Heilman, who’s straining pouty lips are just asking for trouble.

Plus, I think Heilman and Sosa need to get arrested first. Hurry up guys, you have 24 hours before the draft.

wouldn’t the Bengals try to snatch them up then?

Good point! Maybe they should get arrested, win a Super Bowl, and switch to safety? Then would they be in?

Well…I think it’s appropriate for me to bring up football here.

As a Penn State Alum (just last May), I’m hoping the Giants pick up Dan Connor in the first round! *crosses fingers*

Well, since the Mets season looks lost already (and no, I am not a fair weather fan, I have been a die hard supportive fan forever, and have always trusted the Minaya/Willie),I honestly have to get excited about this draft and the Jets turning things around. The Mets made a gigantic, humongous mistake in trading for Santana, and filling one nonexisting hole, and emptying their farm system. I told all of you this repeatedly in the offseason and none of you cared, I told you we were going to end up with an old, overpaid, bunch of veterans, a mediocre team, a gigantic team salary, and absolutely no way to make this team better until next winter. But no, I was called a troll, a moron, and even a Yankee and Phillie fan, because I didnt want Santana. Well, I hope you guys all enjoy having your ace, and watching him dominate, because the rest of the team is mediocre at the best. I love hearing Ron and Keith mention that the Mets still have a high powered offense. That is funny. The Mets offense isnt even in the top half of the national league IMO. They are pathetic. So dont worry about the fact that we have no 1B, our 2B is shot, we have awful, Angel Pagan playing LF, David Wright is going through a gigantic slump, Reyes looks lost and Schneider is hurt. Atleast F-Mart is still here. But like I have said, you all wanted what you got, so dont complain now., because you were warned what would happen but you didnt care.

Couple that with the fact that the Rangers got completely worked in Pittsburg last night, and it seems as though the Pens would be poised to take this series in 5 games, I guess its time to get back to me Jets and hope they can re-build the team back to were they were a few years ago. Darren McFadden to the Jets baby, and good luck to the 2009 Mets. To the New York Rangers, pretty disapointing season, but they played well together the second half so maybe next year.

so you’re saying the key to turning this offense around was Carlos Gomez, who’s batting .255/.271/.362? The other guys they traded away were pitchers who were 2 years away from the Bigs.

Look, if you’re saying they should have gone after offense instead of Santana in the offseason, maybe you’re partially right, but who was there to get? Other than ARod, who was never really serious about leaving the Yankees, there were really not many quality bats out there. At least the Mets improved the team by getting the best pitcher on the market, and maybe the best pitcher in baseball.

I am not saying they should have gone after A-Rod, although I wouldh ave loved that. My point is that they should have signed Kyle Lohse, signed Livan, kept their system and went to war, where they would still be a competitive team (they competed without Johan the last 3 years) and they could have had ammo to go after improvements at the deadline, and they could have had the money to go after Johan/Sabathia in. Its not about Gomez right now (by the way, you could have said the same thing about Reyes’s line when he first came up, Gomez will be a star, but thats not even the point). They would have had a nice group of prospects to move forward with, and a team that would compete, and possibly miss the playoffs in 2008 (which will no doubt happen anyway). They would have had some options, and they would have had ammo to trade for improvements, more important then the actul contribution a Humber or Mulvey would give to this team. And also, you have absolutely no basis to say Humber and Mulvey are 2 years away. Guerra maybe, but its even possible he can be ready before then. Now the Mets have no choices. At all. They have to hope that Delgado turns it around, hope that Castillo and Alou can stay healthy, and if they dont, there isnt a damn thing they can do to resolve the situation.

I would have preferred showing some patience and waiting one more year for Johan, or CC.

“At least the Mets improved the team by getting the best pitcher on the market, and maybe the best pitcher in baseball.”

See, but I dont even necesarrily agree with that. They improved their big league team for the immediate future, but they also hurt their big league team because they have no way to bring in any reinforcements when one of their old guys goes down or slumps, which was inevitable before the season. And besides, in baseball players get a salary that pays them what they are worth, and Johan is making market value for him, so its not like the Mets are really getting value out of his contract. They are paying for every single pitch he throws, and probably overpaying him, unless he posts a 2.50/1.00 through the next 7 years. To try to put it more clearly, Johan is a great pitcher, but not a great value at all. I am pretty sure 25 of the 30 ML teams would not take him if we offered him for free, because of his contract. He is no more valuable then any other player in baseball that is being paid market value for what they bring to the team. He is paid what he is worth, probably more so really you just traded for the right to pay Johan market value, which you could have waited a year and done anyway without giving up your system. Even if Gomez puts up one all star season, then the trade is worth it for the Twins. Even if the other 3 prospects never make it to the majors. They traded away one year of Santana, so if they even get a couple productive years out of the guys they got back. at miniscule salaries, it was worth it for them.

“so you’re saying the key to turning this offense around was Carlos Gomez, who’s batting .255/.271/.362? ”

Just a fun fact. Do you know hwat Reyes’ line was in his first major league season? .255/.271/.373. Pretty similar eh?

alright where to begin. First of all, Reyes, as a 19 year old rookie batted .307/.334/.434, and then had a sophomore slump as a 20 year old after coming back from a major injury while trying to learn a new position.

Carlos Gomez, as a 21 year old rookie, hit .232/.288/.304, and now as a 2nd year 22 year old is still struggling at the plate. I’m sure you’ll argue he’s also coming back from an injury, but his hand injury compared to Reyes’ torn ligament is no comparison.

I’m not saying Gomez isn’t going to be good, but he’s still very far away from being a star, and is not even better than Angel Pagan right now.

Also, it’s an illogical argument that because the Mets are paying a lot of money for Santana, he’s not giving them good value. The Mets can AFFORD his contract. They can afford more contracts. The problem isn’t Santana, it’s Delgado and Alou and Pedro and on and on and on, it’s the old guys locked up to big contracts who aren’t producing. By your argument, teams should just go to war with crappy players signed to league minimum contracts: they’d be getting the same value as the Mets and Santana. The Marlins are competitive right now with a minuscule payroll, should the Mets emulate them?

And those pitchers ARE 2 years away. You really think Humber or Mulvey could help a pennant contender this season? They’re not even pitching for Minnesota yet, and they’re desperate for pitching. The depth would be nice, but I really don’t think Humber’s ever gonna be a good ML pitcher, and I don’t think Mulvey would do much this year. The fact is that by the end of this year, 2 or 3 guys will have stepped up in the Mets system that will be just as good as those guys, just a year behind.

By the way: LETS GO GIANTS. I hope Jerry Reese drafts 7 more players that will make an immediate impact and help the team win another Super Bowl. The man’s got the golden touch…
