News: Alou to NYC for possible MRI
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 27, 2008 12:34 pm

Prior to today’s game, Omar Minaya told reporters that Moises Alou will head to New York to have his swollen ankle examined by doctors, which may be fractured.

He had a CAT scan on Friday, and could go for an MRI following his examine in New York City.

…in other news, Mets fans are not at all surprised

i guess the rumors from earlier in the week that he’d be in new york were right, too bad it’s because of an injury

Srsly, just trade Niese for Nady at this point.

    • jscand says:

You know what, if it gets the deal done, then I agree. Although something tells me that may not be enough.

    • If they have to trade Niese to replace the $35 million worth of offense that is either seriously underperforming or on the DL, then Omar should be fired.

    • smitty says:

Man! I’m with you! When we traded the “X” man I thought it was a bad idea, but hey, they say, it’s all about pitching, BUT X could be playing first base and the outfield and be hitting in the two spot. Look at him now. How many hits does he have? We so rely on Jose and he’s seems streaky but maybe we can give them delgado (no caps) (no hits either) and we won’t miss the D at first base.
And boy! I would love to see Willie clap his hands, and yell encouragement to his players a lot more. Ala Bobby Cox. Let’s get intense an excited. The team seems to have a little ‘executive’ in them instead of the ol blue collar.

      • smitty says:

….and he hits two homers! the ghost of Roberto Clemente is in the house.

      • metterman says:

Just remember what the mets got back for the “X” man. Don’t get me wrong I liked and still do like Nady a lot, but we did get oliver perez. Given how everything has played out I’d rather have “O” than “X” at this point. But maybe thats just me. Whether you like that move or not is irrelevant right now, there should be no trade made for anyone at this point. Yes alou is hurt, but Pagan and Church are playing just fine, and we do have Endy, Anderson, and Eisley who can all play the outfield, so Nady will see little time out there. As for a 1b replacement, we need to give Carlos a little bit more time, he’ll come back a little. If two months from now we’re in the middle of the pack and Carlos is still dragging tail then and only then do you pull the trigger. Not a second before.

  2. yeah I don’t think we should count on Alou coming back.

  3. xxcgags21metsxx says:

Yeah, this is just a joke now. Yes, he can hit, but hes never in the lineup, so whats the point

  4. And this is why I would have gone after Fukudome instead of picking up Alou’s option.

What is it about Omar that he doesn’t understand the concept of aging?

  5. robmenna says:

Talking with a Cubs fan, Fukodome has no weaknesses. He is great in the field, works the count, hits to all fields, knows how to run the bases. Just a great all-around player. Would have been nice. He is 32 though I think.

  6. Jaded1983 says:

even my girlfriend scoffed when i told her that he’s hurt again. ugh. *Must remain positive…must remain positive*

    Lets Go Mets!!!

  7. Constnza81V2.0 says:

You’re understating things a bit Matt. According to Delcos, Minaya said an initial scan “showed something” in Alou’s ankle and they’re thinking it’s a fracture.

What a joke. I’m not saying they should have grabbed Fukudome, but there had to be better stop gaps for Omar to find this last off-season. Of course, when Willie insists on platooning Endy and Pagan because Pagan is “just a bench player” it doesn’t help in the quest to find any long-term replacements for the season.

    • washtiger says:

Re-sign Shawn Green! Get him here now since he hits Smoltz so well!

    • zen says:

endy is better than pagan. much, much better defensively. equal offensively. pagan has come down to earth as was predictable.

      • Constnza81V2.0 says:

Endy hasn’t done much offensively since 2006, so it’s hard to call them equals. Sure Pagan isn’t hitting .380 anymore but he’s one of the few guys in this lineup who isn’t consistently putting up 0 for 4s whenever he plays these days. Just saying that we know what we have in Endy at this point while Pagan is still a work in progress and would be nice to see if he can come out of his slump on an everyday basis before dismissing it that he’s coming “down to earth.”

        • zen says:

fair enough. i just think pagan is a 4th outfielder. he played well offensively in the spring and early, but doesn’t really drive the ball. he was given up for nothing twice in his career.

i want him to get playing time, but i like endy. he great defensively. pagan seems to take milledge routes to the ball.

he’ll get plenty of ab’s without alou

        • dykstraw says:

endy is an absolute joke at the plate.

i love the guy but let’s be honest. he should never start, especially since pagan is better from the left anyway.

and of course pagan’s numbers are going to take a hit when he loses his starts against righties.

        • zen says:

pagan isn’t better. he has done zero in his career. endy isn’t a star, but has performed in tough spots including the playoffs. endy is great in the field.

i like pagan, but he is a 4th outfielder like endy without the defense. pagan’s numbers didn’t take a hit because he is playing less. he is playing less because he’s an okay player who should share time not start consistently.

        • dykstraw says:

whether or not pagan should be sharing time is debatable. whether he should be sharing time with endy is not.

angel pagan is young and still growing into the big leagues. that said, he is clearly a better hitter than endy who is as good as he’s ever going to be, and CLEARLY and OVERWHELMINGLY better against righties. but platooning him and only starting him against lefties is going to make him seem worse than he actually is.

actually, and oddly, endy is a better hitter (by OPS) against lefties than righties, and better against lefties than the switch-hitter pagan. so go figure.

endy is better on defense but not enough that he should be taking many starts away from pagan.

don’t get me wrong, i love endy, but he is punchless at the plate.

      • smitty says:

Man! I agree. Endy is the man to bring in over Pagan. He’s a smarter ball player and more reliable in the field. Did anyone notice how Wright slid with his foot down, and Pagan was called out when his foot was up in the air? FUN-DA-MEN-TALS. Try Endy endyday.

  8. Prismo says:

I have to admit, I’m actually laughing at this point. Alou and El Duque getting injured and reinjured is just comical at this point.

I’m a worried though that the Mets are sub-par at: left field, second base, first base, and (temporarily?) catcher.

  9. CitizenSnips says:

Xavier Nady: Proving that 4 decent months can get you infinite love in NY.

  10. johnfromflushing says:

just reported on wfan….. mets believe it’s a possible fracture…..

take care with this old fart….. what a disgusting senseless signing…. and all the clowns that supported it were crazy….. depending on 42 year old outfielder……. unbelievable……..

  11. johnfromflushing says:

    how f ***in predictable……

petey ,duque, alou…. delgado……… great job omar great job……

why not bring in ruben sierra to replace alou……

  12. johnfromflushing says:

    please…… old timer……

  13. johnfromflushing says:

coming around to what ?? lunch..?

  14. gomets6091 says:

you’ve gotta be joking. Seriously, this whole ordeal is just an episode of Punk’d, right? How can anyone possibly be that brittle? Ugh.

  15. DaWrightStuff says:

    long live Angel Pagan!!!

  16. metsmets17 says:

I like a Chavez/Pagan platoon in left. Omar shouldnt trade anymore future good pitching for a bat. Chavez gives us a good glove. Pagan is little better hitter. Both have good speed. They both can hit ok in the 2 hole when Castillo is off.

Im still hoping Delgado can give u a little b4 we sell the farm.

  17. johnfromflushing says:

he’s 42 … of course ya can be that brittle……. god …has the steriod era blinded people…….

  18. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

can we just put him out to pasture like we did funnycide? (sarcasm) guys they don’t know if its a fracture yet stay positive!!

  19. johnfromflushing says:

no …… dont stay positive … get rid of him and face the fact that he will add nothing of any great impact on this team…..

  20. Mingo says:

    Barry, Barry, Barry

  21. seanmcsean says:

Paging Fernando Martinez. You are wanted in Queens.

  22. andyglass1 says:

Is this an insurance scam ??!!??!? maybe they’re trying to scrape enough money together to sign big head Barry. And no, I dont endorse that move, although with the performances we are seeing so far, could it make things any worse ? Could Barry be such a d-bag that everyone would just quit and go thru the motions ?

  23. blains2000 says:

Good thing El Duque and Alou aren’t horses ar this point. Geez! Hopefully this teaches Omar a lesson. Younger and more athletic!

  24. JR. says:

    Who plays in more games this year;
    Alou
    Pedro
    Duque
    Keith Hernandez

    • ToastyJoe says:

I’ll take a crack at this:

      Alou: 0 games
Pedro: Has already pitched 3.1 innings, will pitch 5.2 more before he’s shut down again for the year
      Duque: 0 games
Mex: 0 games, but will appear in Guiseppe Franco ad before year end

      • Mingo says:

I wanna see Giuseppe Franco play for the Mets. Screw Alou.

        • ToastyJoe says:

Well, Guiseppe Franco doesn’t play baseball. He doesn’t know anything about it. But he wouldn’t put his good name on the back of his uniform for a team that doesn’t work.

        • GregB says:

lol…he doesn’t KNOWN anything about it…it’s almost as if he can’t remember if he doesn’t know anything about it or own anything about it…but he is willing to screw you out of $450 for something that costs $20…lol

  25. metsfansberealistic says:

we should release Alou and Delgado and El Duque and Sosa and call up the kids from AA who are performing well (some combination of Carp, Evans, Murphy, F Mart, Muniz) and maybe some of the AAA pitchers as well

Look at how well Figueroa is doing – we need more people like this who bring hunger and intangibles

    that’s what Xavier Nady did
    that’s what Melvin Mora did

and less people who are here on ‘expectation’ and ‘veteran status’ and contribute little and drag us down

and if Willie is the wrong manager for this approach, replace him as well

we need some veterans, but at the same time, we need to develop the next generation, and this regime just doesn’t get that

    • ToastyJoe says:

Melvin Mora?? Wow…talk about living in the past. I heard that Nolan Ryan is a real gamer, too. Damn that trade.

    • metsftw says:

      LOL, what?!

i hope you’re just being facetious, especially with “realistic” in your screen name

  26. ToastyJoe says:

“…in other news, Mets fans are not at all surprised…”

Matt, what you should’ve written was “in other news, the sun rose this morning.”

  27. GregB says:

this could be good…maybe the team will stop waiting for alou to get here and realize they have to do it themselves.

  28. Jova1931 says:

People sure do know how to overreact? I went to the game yesterday and everyone was booing Heilman and Delgado Today, they love Delgado and he’s supposed to come out to a curtain call because he hits two homeruns, and had he popped out then what? Yeah, welcome to New York. The fans are fickle. Fans want consistency out of their players, how about consistency out of their fans? I never booed Kaz Matsui, so I believe as long as you’re trying out there you shouldn’t be booed, no matter how bad you play.

  29. johnfromflushing says:

well jova…. thats just the problem when it comes to delgado …. he’s so good it’s hard to tell when he’s playin hard and when he’s boring himself…..

  30. stickguy says:

At this point, just release Alou and DUque and stop the drama.

Well, maybe keep them since you are paying them, but please, do not expect to ever see them again on the field (and certainly don’t plan around it!).

At this point, they should look for a better spare OF with some pop. Back I guess to the guy that can also play 1B.

So, I hope they don’t trade one of the few decent prospects (not Neise for ex.), which leaves them with a FA (any left?) or DFA, or a minor trade for someone rotting on a bench.

I would do the Heilmann for someone deal though!

So, once Schneider is back, they can demore the 3rd C, so who do they replace him with? Time for Evans maybe to get a look?

I really don’t think F Mart could be close to ready, and if they aren’t going to give thim the everyday job for an extended period, don’t bother.
