In a post to his blog for ESPN.com, Buster Olney believes that Pirates 1B Xavier Nady would be a good fit for the Mets or Indians, “but the new Pittsburgh management is, for now, devoted to the idea of trying to win in 2008.”
…from what i understand, if the Pirates ever decide to trade nady, it will be for high-quality, young, minor leaguers or zero-to-three guys who they can control…you know the drill…
According to Olney, if the Mets are looking for a short-term solution at first base, “they could talk to Cincinnati about a deal for Scott Hatteberg, who doesn’t hit for much power but does get on base consistently.”

Nady would be a great fit, but he’s absolutely raking right now, and the price would be exorbitant: think Niese + Carp + One More. The Bucs would want FMart, of course, but he’d be a prospect too far.
What if they threw Ian Snell into the deal?
X-Man,
Stop trying to talk your way back to NY.
Hey man, I told Duaner to order room service, but did he listen? Nooooo. He had to go out and look for White Castle.
I just want to be back in NY, is that so wrong?
Haha X-Man. If you come back, don’t kick his ass. It’s his fault you’re not on the team anymore.
Niese + Carp + one more is not bad… as long as that “one more” isn’t FMart…. Unless of course the Mets intend to move heaven and earth to sign a FA 1B for next year (Teixeira?) and move Nady back to the OF.
For Nady? Are you serious? Nady is not even as good as Church and you want to trade 2 decent prospects for a backup 1B and OF?
there’s absolutely NO WAY omar trades FMart for a guy like Nady….say what you want about Omar, but he’s no Dan Duquette.
i am not giving up niese in any deal….give em pelfrey and or heilman
um….
or Duaner Sanchez,
or we can sign Roberto Hernandez and trade him along with Oliver Perez for Nady.
All Great Ideas!
I would love Nady to return. However, I am not sold the Mets can pull the trigger with an anemic farm system. And I wouldn’t want to trade the remaining good prospects. If the Pirates want their selection of mediocre talent, then by all means give them mediocre talent (i.e., heilman).
…and he’s got great hair!
Remember once every 90 days…and he too can notice a difference. lol
It will never get old. It’s kind of like Borat’s “Not Jokes” in the movie.
Carlos Delgado is a great hitter pause not.
See? You laughed.
Seriously though. Nady would be a perfect fit for this team. We need to find out the severity of Alou’s injury before proceeding (no pun intended Guiseppe). If it’s months, then we need a player like Nady. If it’s a week, let’s see how it goes with Alou in the lineup.
Off topic, but anyone know when today’s game would be rescheduled for it/when it is rained out?
My guess would be a double header tomorrow. This is the only time the Pirates are at Shea and they already have a day game scheduled for Thursday and it’s a get away day.
True… that’s too bad, this would have been my first Santana start as a Met.
Yeah, I was planning on going too but it doesn’t look very good right now.
That would be sweet.
If so, I am taking the day off!!!!!
Nothing like a double bill SWEEP!!!!!!!!
I could use the wins.
Mets are currently 3-2 at games I have gone to, (thanks in part to two wins in which Figgy started).
Speaking of Figgy…. got to love this guy. For all the kudos for Lohse who has had a great start for St. Louis, where would we be with out Figgy?!
You know, that isn’t a bad idea at all. Would tix to today’s game work for both games?
I was thinkin about that yesterday too with the start that Lohse has gotten off to.
I hope Pelfrey has a good start against Pitt. as of now, I would keep Figgy in the rotation and send Pelfrey down when Pedro comes back. it is too early to start thinkign of what happens when Pedro comes back because so much can happen between now and then. my hope is that Pelfrey can get it together and Figgy can move ot the ‘pen and we can just get rid of Sosa.
I like Nady as a player, but always thought he was overrated. Let’s see how we do the next few weeks and see how serious Alou’s foot/ankle is. There will always be OFs available later on, and some do play 1B, too.
Agreed over-rated
yeah…Nady for Heilman
and, umm…Joe Smith for Carlos Pena
and, Grady Sizemore for Moises Alou
oh yeah. and Luis Castillo for Chase Utley, but the phils must promise to sign him to a 10yr 500MM contract and pay it all AND pay all of Castillo’s salary….get it done Omar or else you are the worst GM ever.
another classic example of a team wanting too much for Nady so he will finish the year with the Pirates.
in reality, Nady would be a bench/role player for the Mets. they will not just sit on delgado’s salary for the rest of the year. you just don’t give up much for a player like Nady. so you make a respectable offer and if it is declined, you move on.
What about giving the pirates one of the Evans/Murphy/Carp set and Pagan, all are young promising hitters tearing up AA. Obviously all three aren’t going to play for the mets and more likely 1 or none of them will. The pirates get 2 0-3 service time players. Pagan would be expendable with because someone would have to go to make room for Nady.
I just don’t think the Pirates are going to deal him to us no matter what. I doubt they like the idea of throwing in Perez a couple years ago, and now you are going to ask for Nady back. “Um we would like to thank you for throwing in Perez in our last deal, we would also like you to return Nady, we will give you some prospects, but if they turn out and you cant afford them, we will be back for them too”
Are we really giving stock to anything that Buster Olney writes that isn’t a news item?
I don;t mean to rain on everyone’s Monday, but here it is (makes me sick just posting this!):
Mets Team Report Apr 28, 2008
Left fielder Moises Alou will return to New York on Monday for an MRI on his sore left ankle.
A CT scan last Friday “showed something,” general manager Omar Minaya said, which he admitted “could potentially be a slight fracture.”
Alou is currently on the disabled list recovering from hernia surgery. He had been progressing well until he experienced soreness in his ankle.
“He was pretty close to playing,” Minaya said.
Minaya said Alou was not injured on a particular play, but started complaining of soreness and swelling.
Just assume Alou is not playing this year, same goes for Pedro, if you accept them as bonus’ you will go to sleep easier at night. I don’t know if everyone noticed, but it looked like Willie started leaving Pagan out of the lineup lately so you would sort of forget about him when Alou returned, I assume you are going to be seeing more of Pagan now.
this is yesterday’s news
I just saw it…..oh well.
It may be yesterday’s news, but when the Alou update comes out it’s going to be a lot worse than what they said yesterday.

How will we ever survive without the great Xavier Nady??!?!?!
you might want to acknowledge that he is in the Pirates lineup when you write those stats, I can only imagine what Delgado’s stats would look like if he was in the Pirates lineup.
he was in the pirate’s line-up.
great post. Thank you for shedding some light. I like Nady just fine, but the guy’s not Stan Musial, he’s a decent #6 hitter, which is exactly what Delgado was last year and hopefully will be for the rest of this year.
by the way, since we’re talking stats here, this is pretty irrelevant but I wanted to post it somewhere:
For everyone who’s been worried about Maine this season, here are his numbers from his second start through his most recent start:
4 G, 2-1, 2.66 ERA, 23.2 IP, 18 K, 1.35 WHIP (18 BB)
Other than the walks, he’s been pitching great. If he can cut down on those, he’ll be able to go deeper into games, and he’ll be a true #2 pitcher.
you’re totally correct, he cuts down the walks, he’s a very good pitcher, for now, he’s just pretty good. He’s able to get anyone out at any time it seems, its just like he almost takes hitters off, or i don’t even know what, he can’t let any hitters off the hook with these walks. He does that, he’ll go deeper into games. He’s still young though, he’s still figuring out how to “pitch”.
I think now is the time to get Nady if the Mets really have any interest. He slots into left field until Alou is back (which could be after the All Star break at this rate). Then, if Alou ever does come back, the Mets could see what they have with Delgado. If Delgado is still slumping, they could use Nady at first against lefties. If Delgado is back, or at least having a decent year with the bat, the Mets could use Nady to spell in left, right, and at first (even center), and he would be the right handed power bat off the bench when not starting.
If one of the double A bats hitting way over their heads, plus a decent pitcher gets Nady, I say do it.
I like Nady, and the fact that he can play outfield and first is nice, but I wouldn’t give up any more than 2 AA-type prospects (obv. not FMart, and preferably no pitchers), and I don’t think that’s enough to land him at this point in the season. Let’s wait until a little closer to the deadline, when the Pirates find themselves mired in last place and a little more willing to deal. Plus, then we can see where we are with Delgado and Alou (my guess is we’ll be in more or less the same boat), plus we might know a little more about our own minor league guys to know who we absolutely don’t want to deal and whatnot. Who knows, maybe FMart catches fire and gets promoted and rakes up here and solves all our problems (he’s the same age as Reyes was in 2003 and Doc was in ‘84, so anything’s possible)
Another great post Zen. Delgado is streaky but when/if Alou returns we will need his LH bat as much or more than a RH Nady. Nady would be a backup player for us and should only get extra players and a medium AA prospect at best.
Nady is really streaky too. Probably even moreso than Delgado.
i would really like to have Nady this year as a strong righthanded bat….but not sure he fits into future plans. He would log jam 1st base or the OF, which does 1 of 2 things….prohibits a Texeira signing or keeps FMart in the minors.
However, FMart is currently striking out 25% of the time and 5 times more than he walks up in Binghampton. That’s not a major league -ready hitter. He’s got to turn that around if his near prediction to play at Shea this year materializes.
Fair enough, but this is misleading, as Nady had many fewer abs.
Last year: Nady .806 ops, Delago .781 ops
Besides, we’re not talking about last year’s Delgado, we’re talking about this year’s Delgado, further along in his decline. We’d all be happy at this point with Delgado’s ‘07 numbers, but that isn’t likely to happen.
did you conveniently decide not to include ABs in your analysis?
The thing with Nady is if the mets go out an make this move it must be with an eye to the future. Delgado is clearly not the answer after this year and I seriously doubt Texiera is coming here so the mets must look towards retaining him after this year. Enter Scott Boras. There is no way he will have Nady signing an extension before the trade or during the remainder of the season thus he will be a free agent at years end. To make a move to rent a player at this point in time is foolish as we do not know what this team is. If in July Delgado is not hitting and Alou is not on the horizon AND we are in the hunt maybe it is worth it. But right now there is no need to be hurling prospects from a depleted farm system until we know what this team is
Well, the Mets already have a s/t solution at 1B, and that is Delgado. So what Olney is talking about is adding a mediocre scrub type to share time with Delgado, just for this year?
Might as well just use Anderson or Easley, or call up one of the AA guys and save some effort.
Nady seems to have risen to ythical proportions, and sure he is having a good start, but can you count on him to keep it up? And will he be on the team (no idea of his contract status) for a few more years?
