Minors: 4/27 Recap
By Jordan Zakarin - Apr 28, 2008 12:44 pm

New Orleans (AAA): 2-0 win over Round Rock

RHP Ruddy Lugo went the distance in this rain-shortened, 4 1/2 inning affair. He tossed five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk, striking out two.  3B Fernando Tatis was 1-for-2 with a double and a run.

Binghamton (AA): 3-0 loss to Portland

RHP Eric Brown was unlucky to take the loss, surrendering just one run on seven hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out four. RHP Eddie Kunz allowed a run in the eighth.

OF Fernando Martinez and 3B Danny Murphy flipped spots in the lineup, with Martinez going 1-for-3 with a walk out of the three hole and Murphy 0-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. 1B Nick Evans went 1-for-4 and DH Mike Carp finished hitless in four at bats.

St. Lucie (A+): 6-4 win over Palm Beach (14 innings)

RHP Nick Carr cruised through his first three innings before running into trouble. He allowed two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth before getting the hook. All told, he allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in 4.2 innings pitched, with five strikeouts. From there, the Met bullpen was terrific; they received scoreless appearances from four relievers, including Flushing native RHP John Wesley. RHP Tim Stronach earned the win by allowing a run on three hits and a walk in 3.1 innings.

OF Brahaim Maldonado hit a three run walkoff shot in the 14th, his only hit in six at bats. SS Ruben Tejada and OF Ezequiel Carrera were also each 1-for-6, and 1B Lucas Duda finished hitless in his six at bats.

Savannah (A-): 4-2 win over Rome

RHP Elvin Ramirez earned the win, allowing one run on four hits and three walks in 5.1 innings, striking out four.

Batting out of the top two spots in the order, 2B Greg Veloz and SS Matt Bouchard were each 2-for-4 with an RBI. OF and Brooklyn native Michael Hernandez was also 2-for-4, adding a double and a run scored.

i’m sure this is a really stupid question…but what is the brooklyn cyclones affiliation with the mets?

    • Gasface77 says:

      Are you a Mets fan?

    • cb32 says:

Well that just wasn’t nice. The guy qualified it as a stupid question which it is not. The Cyclones are the Mets “Short A” team. Meaning, they are a part of Single A but play a shortened season.

Next thing you know we’ll be booing each other on the boards, rather than just the Mets at Shea.

      • Gasface77 says:

Booooooooooooo!!! Haha…you’re right, that was not the right thing to say. I guess I’m just in a bad mood today.

  2. Gasface77 says:

Mike and the Mad Dog are fighting over the Delgado thing right now. So funny.

  3. therealsince86 says:

Another stupid question but how do you pitch 5 shutout innings in a 4 1/2 inning game?

    • Jim says:

Are you a mets fan? Sorry couldn’t resist.

    • domosnacks5 says:

Meaning he pitched the top of the 5th, and the end of that, the game was called.

Thus it was 4 AND A HALF innings.

But the pitcher pitched 5, since the bottom wasn’t played. Not rocket science…

      • therealsince86 says:

It’s not rocket science but its weird science.
RHP Ruddy Lugo went the distance in this rain-shortened, 4 1/2 inning affair. He tossed five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk, striking out two.

        1st inning= 1 inning
        2nd inning =2 innings
        3rd inning =3 innings
        4th inning = 4 innings
5th inning= 5 uh wait the game was called after 4 and 1/2 innings. You can’t pitch 5 innings in 4 1/2. To pitch 5 innings the game would have had to make it to the middle of the 5th.

        • domosnacks5 says:

Yes, and the middle of the 5th is what?

4 completed innings, and half an inning.

You just answered your own question and still don’t get it. Thus, a game can be 4 and a half innings, with one guy pitching 5 innings. Now the other pitcher pitched, what? that’s right, 4 innings. It really isn’t weird or rocket science, do you get it now?

        • darkstar73 says:

thereal is right, you’re not, maybe jordan can clarify? if the game was 4 and a half innings, meaning one pitcher pithced in the 4th inning and the other guy didn’t, that pitcher went 4 innings, and the other guy went 3.

        • domosnacks5 says:

I don’t know what actually happened in the game, but if it went 4 and a half innings, then one pitcher did pitch 5, and the other pitched 4. Think about it, if you say the game went 4 full innings, and one half, as FOUR AND A HALF implies, then one pitcher pitched 5 and the other pitched 4.

If the game ended halfway through the 4th, then one pitcher pitched 4 and another pitched 3. I’m 100% correct.

        • gomets6091 says:

No, you’re wrong. New Orleans was the home team. The game went 4 1/2 innings, meaning it went into the 5th inning. The guy pitched the:

          Top of the 1st
          Top of the 2nd
          Top of the 3rd
          Top of the 4th
          Top of the 5th

then the game was called. The home team didn’t bat in the bottom of the 5th.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think it was just worded where a too busy guy like me, lol, could not understand. It thought he meant that the game was called in the bottom of the 4th. I guess it could not have been anyway because it has to go to the middle of the 5th to be offical anyway right?

        • BillySandman says:

Lugo pitched the top of the 5th inning, after which the game was called. He pitched 5 full innings.

        • JefJarrett says:

          Correct…

4 1/2 innings is in the middle of the 5th inning
At the conclusion of the bottom of the 5th, then 5 innings have been played.

just like if 2 pitchers go the distance in a complete game where the home team wins

          one pitcher goes 9 innings
          one pitcher goes 8
the game really only went 8 1/2 innings, because you don’t play the bottom of the 9th if the home team is ahead in the 9th

        • therealsince86 says:

Which makes much more sense since I actually went back and looked at the box score. For some reason I thought he was implying that the game ended during the bottom of the 4th.

        • domosnacks5 says:

darkstar and thereal, bow to me :D

        • therealsince86 says:

I get all the logistics about if the game makes it into the 5th inning then that is 4 innings played. I just misread the comment. Sorry to cause all of the confussion and plethera of post.

        • gomets6091 says:

yep, it’s like when John Maine had his 5 inning complete game 1-hitter last year.

And don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Last night someone said something like “I hope the fans welcome Nady home when he gets here tomorrow” and I thought that meant we traded for him, I searched for like 10 minutes for news on it before I realized he meant when Nady comes into town with the Pirates haha.

        • darkstar73 says:

it was confusing because jordan first stated the game went 4 and 1/2 innings, which to me meant it was called in the bottom of the 4th, but apparently that wasn’t the case.

        • domosnacks5 says:

He didn’t FIRST state it, it’s still stated at that, because he did. I was just trying to explain that when a game is reported as going 4.5, it means that it ended in the middle of the 5th, thus four full innings, and a half.

          It’s okay, it’s a Monday afterall… :D

NOW LET’S GO KICK SOME BUCCANEER BUTT TONIGHT!

        • darkstar73 says:

obviously i had too much wine last night and too little coffee this morning.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

“yep, it’s like when John Maine had his 5 inning complete game 1-hitter last year.”

Somebody should tell John that games are 9 innings. Then maybe we’ll squeeze 7 out of him :-)

        • therealsince86 says:

Darkstar, I really appreciate you going to war for me. That’s nice considering how wrong I was. I am sure you were just trying to make me look better. Kinda like Billy Madison peeing on himself. Thank’s man, I take the bullet for you next time.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

“You ain’t cool unless you pee yo pants.”

        • Lightweis says:

If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.

        • domosnacks5 says:

“if peein yo pants is cool, call me miles davis”

“THAT’S THE GROSSEST THING I EVER HEARD!”

        • Nate W. says:

This string of comments has irrecoverably damaged by baseball IQ… I think I need a nap now

  4. Nate W. says:

St. Lucie played a day game today. Claudio Vargas pitched like you would expect a big leaguer to pitch in A+ ball. Eric Niesen, who is normally a starter, pitched poorly in relief and took the loss. Ramon Castro played and had a couple hits.

Bingy and Savanah are off, while New Orleans begins thier west coast swing in Tacoma tonight at 10. Hopefully no more catchers get hurt because the next guys are 3500 miles away…
