News: Vargas, Castro start in St. Lucie
By Jordan Zakarin - Apr 28, 2008 3:22 pm

RHP Claudio Vargas made his first start in the Mets’ organization today, for single A St. Lucie.

The 29-year old right hander, signed earlier this month after being released by Milwaukee, faced the Palm Beach Cardinals, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in five solid innings.

He didn’t walk a batter, and struck out six.

Ramon Castro, also making his first appearance for St. Lucie, caught Vargas and spent seven innings behind the plate.

Castro went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Any word on tonight’s game? I have a two hour drive, and really don’t want to do the four hour roundtrip for a rainout!

No word, but it ain’t looking good.

“He went 2 for 3 with a run scored at the plate” That’s just weird, who says that?

LoL, it was changed. I didn’t mean to offend anybody, just sounded weird and obvious.

I wouldn’t go man, even if they have the game it is going to be horrid conditions. In 40s, with rain off and on.

Exactly – Doesn’t this site have any inside info on what is going on, or will we just get milked for parking, beer and food, and then told to go home?

The last bad weather game I went to, they just kept us hanging in the stands for a few hours while it wasn’t raining. Then they announced it was going to rain later and canceled. It was very annoying, and the worst part was that we watched almost the entire 1986 season on diamond vision while we were waiting, and then they cut it off right in the middle of game 6 of the World Series.

Not looking good. Been raining all day and weather.com has a 100 percent chance of rain every hour from 7 to 10 then 90 percent after that.

if i had tickets i would go to shea just to boo the weather :)

haha..if the game doesn’t get cancelled, there is 100% chance that Delgado will get “showered” with boos.

any news of alou’s mri? or the mango man Pedro Martinez and him coming back as “the suprise of the month”?

I think it would be good if Vargas turns out to pitch decently — I’d be much happier if Pelfrey went to AAA to work on stuff. I also think that it’s not going to be too long before the league catches up to Figueroa, although he might do well as a middle reliever (he seems to do well the first time through the order). I think I’d be happier if the Mets released Sosa and installed Figueroa in the BP once Pedro returns.

Him doing better the first time through the lineup is what concerns me. It says to me that they’re figuring him out and making adjustments and not just that but they’re doing it quickly. It might be a disaster his second time through the league. Of course hopefully our “Suprise of the month” will be back before that becomes an issue.

There is nothing for Pelfrey to learn in AAA. If the guy could throw strikes, he would not run into trouble all the time. Look at Figgy, comes out throwing strikes and keeps the mets in the game. That is all Pelfrey needs to do and he would be fine.

    • adropofvenom says:

Well, that learning to throw strikes is a big thing, no?

When Vargas is ready, let Pelfrey go down and learn how to throw strikes already. He’s not of much use to us until then.

      • gomets019 says:

I’d let Pelfrey pitch himself out of his spot. If he can learn on the fly and can pitch better than league average while doin so I keep him in. Besides, I agree Figgy won’t produce at this level all year, we’ll need Vargas to fill his spot and then maybe we can get SOMETHING for Sosa. Cause Pedros return isn’t a sure thing. How many other times this year have we seen a player get past 1 setback only to develop another. Kudos to Omar for a great job loading up on Vargas, Figgy, Armas, and holding onto Niese. What to do about left field, first base though? Pagan really does look like a reserve (a good one) Chavez, Degado and Anderson are slumping and Alou and Valentin might never be back for any sigificant time. Somethings gotta be done besides cross our fingers. Any ideas about what Omar does now, if anything?
