Health: Schneider still in Hospital
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 29, 2008 7:21 am

Brian Schneider remains in the hospital with an infection in his left thumb.

Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters over the weekend that Schneider would likely be released from the hospital either yesterday or today, and could return to the lineup during the team’s series against the Pirates, which ends on Wednesday.

Schneider talked to the New York Post from his hospital room, essentially saying he is frustrated and hopes to return soon.

According to the Post, Schneider is being treated with intravenous antibiotics, “but has not been able to kick the infection.”

…well, that’s not good…i mean, any one who has ever been hospitalized and on any sort of intravenous knows it makes you fairly weak…it takes at least a few days to get your full strength back…at this point, the Mets should probably just let him chill, in hopes that he’ll be ready for the trip to arizona – assuming he is healed by then…

…the thing is, i miss schneider…i feel like i see a difference in the pitching staff when he is in the there…he seems to command the game quite well, and he provides a sense of stability behind the plate that is comforting…nothing against Raul Casanova, who has actually done better than i expected…it’s just, schneider is the starting catcher for a reason

Do we know for sure that Ramon Castro is still alive? If so, what’s the latest on him?

    • wnymetsfan says:

Last I heard he played a day or so ago for St Lucie.

Matt, I also see a difference in the staff especially Pelfrey. I may be wrong but his two really good starts were with Scheinder behind the dish and the last not so good ones were with Molina or Casanova catching. Brian just seems to know how to work with his pitchers to get them to excel.

You know Matt I’ve noticed the same thing and I was wondering when you were actually going to post the fact that Schnieder gives me much more confidence behind the plate. For all pitchers but Santana, I feel like it’s not them I don’t have faith in it’s not having Schnieder behind the plate. In other words if Schnieder was in the game and behind the plate I would feel much more comfortable with the starting pitching than I would if we had Casanova in there with the same pitchers.

Is today’s Post story the first time it’s been reported to be a Staph infection?

    • No, that was the initial suggestion, but Minaya has never confirmed that.

      • Gasface77 says:

Newsday said today that Minaya said it was a blister and that Willie was incorrect when he called it a staph infection.

      • khoffler says:

I would just like to point out how serious a staph infection can be. Nasty stuff…If this is the case he could be in the hospital for quite some time. I hope that he isn’t, but I have to say that I am worried. I hope that he recovers soon!

Maybe we should put him on the DL retroactive to last week? It will take the pressure off him coming back too soon. It will also give us another body on the bench.

Although the thought of Fernando Tatis pinch hitting in a big ninth inning spot and striking out on three pitches sorta makes me cringe.

    • Fregosi says:

We? Do work in the FO?

      • Massey says:

You don’t? Me and Ollie Oxen do. Let us know if you need anything like free season tickets.

          Hey Massey,

These common folk don’t know what they’re missing. It’s great to be able to rig the dream seats competition every night!

Oh, and the 8th inning singalong…they don’t call me Mr.Ballot Box Stuffing Guy for nothing.

        Hey Fregosi,

Perhaps you missed the line underneath “Metsblog” at the top of the page?

  4. Massey says:

Behind the plate stats ‘07 Nats:
    Schneider 120 GS, 4.79 ERA
    Flores 42 GS, 4.01 ERA

    ‘06 Nats
    Schneider 111 GS, 5.28 ERA
    Others: 18, 4.61; 13 5.71, 11 3.30, 9 3.99
    Total ERA: 5.03

This is unexpected, no. It seems statistically significant, too.

    ‘08 Mets:
    Schneider 15 GS, 3.36 ERA
    Cassanova 8 GS, 4.44 ERA

That’s better, albeit a very small sample. Anyone have a good explanation?

    Anyone have a good explanation?

    • Deaner says:

      The Nats suck?

    • jcervone7 says:

Unless Schneider was pitching to himself I wouldn’t read too much into that.

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

The good explanation is there is a difference between trotting out Matt Chico, Tim Redding, Odalis Perez, Tony Armas Jr, and an aging Livan Hernandez every day and Johan Santana every 5th day.

Schneider calls a great game, but once again it’s up to the pitchers to execute.

      • Massey says:

Well I’m not trying to compare the Nats pitchers to the Mets pitchers. I’m comparing how the pitchers perform when Schneider is behind the plate to other catchers with the same pitching staff.

I expected that Schneider would call a better game, keep the pitchers confidence high when they hit trouble, and that the pitchers would pitch slightly worse when pitching to another catcher.

The stats show the opposite. Maybe the numbers look better in previous years, I don’t know.

        • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

ahh…i thought you were trying to point out that the Nats starting rotation didn’t have a great ERA.

        • I expected that Schneider would call a better game, keep the pitchers confidence high … The stats show the opposite.

Massey, you can’t make that conclusion from a comparison of CERA. Such a comparison might suggest any or all of those things you mentioned, but there are other reasons why there could be differences.

For example, it could have been simply that Schneider caught more of the rookies and less experienced and accomplished starters that year.

But here’s what I think may have been a bigger factor — Flores appeared in more games (13) in which he didn’t start than Schneider did (2). I assume that was for double switches late in games. Flores therefore had a higher percentage of his CERA from catching the bullpen staff. And the Nationals had a better bullpen ERA last year than the Mets. Their bullpen has always been strong the last few years. Also, the differential in ERA between their bullpen and starters is pretty big — much bigger than it was for the Mets in 2007. So perhaps because a higher percentage of Flores CERA is from the relievers is why his CERA is lower. This is just a guess, but it makes sense.

  5. guierllNO MOta says:

seriously, forget that no one can steal on the guy or that he calls a great game for the other 4 pitchers or that he has had some big hits….this guy is the best catcher in Mets history for one reason….Pelfrey is an awful awful awful major league starting pitcher (at this point in his career) when anyone BUT Schenider catches for him, the guy stunk it up for two years, we gave him the benefit for being young, then Schneider catches him for 2 games, he is the second coming and then Casanova catches him for two and he is a bum.

    All hail the Schneid

    • nrmax88 says:

Good stuff guillerno. All hail the Schneid indeed

    • Ollie Ollie Oxen Free says:

waiting for him to hit a walkoff home run and a post headline saying…”walk-off the schneid”

    • MudvilleNine says:

Best catcher in Mets’ history? I say nay-nay. He has a way to go before taking the top spot from the one and only Jerry Grote.

    • Reyesing Shea says:

      best catcher in Mets history????….Gary Carter…Jerrry Grote….

  6. Jay says:

Sounds like MRSA. I hope he’s ok. The big worry is that it gets into the bone, then it could take a couple weeks to treat. If they have him on the right antibiotics though and they’ve properly drained the abscess he should be ok.
