According to El Nuevo Dia, Jose Valentin recently said he will soon travel to New York to be examined by team
doctors.
…from what i recall, valentin chose not to have surgery on his neck, instead seeking rehab in hopes of returning to the game this season…surgery would likely have forced him to retire…
Valentin will remain with the Mets and not opt out of his contract to become a free agent.
According to Valentin, if his exam in New York goes well, his next stop will be St. Lucie or extended spring training.

The forgetables: Player we are told are still on the team
El Duque
Jose Valentin
Ramon Castro
Moises Alou
Pedro Martinez
Wait, the Mets still have Valentin?
Valentin has tremendous heart; however, I do not see him as a valuable commodity on the Mets. His talents would be best suited as a coach for the Mets. I am sure he still has talent, but his recent stints on the D.L. is a big cause of concern.
This is the guy that stepped up in 06. He was the guy that made the difference, i’ll give him a go, he deserves it.
I agree. He was a force on the field defensively and offensively. But you have to ask yourself…do the Mets really need another good talent with the potential to land on the D.L.?
Um… Valentine dissappeared the final month of 2006 season as well as the playoffs. He got a solid contract after 2006, the mets owe this guy nothing more.
People have a short memory because he was a nice story in 2006. He got off to a HORRENDOUS start and had a really weak finish. I liked having him for that season because overall he was able to really contribute.
The Mets need to keep him in the mix though. I would love to see him coach here in some capacity.
who?
any word at all on what that status of Martinez is????
yeah! what happened to “I’ll be back by the end of April”?!
Martinez speaking to a Dominican newspaper said he feels great and will be back with the team by this weekend. The mets organization say his hamstring is destroyed and he will not be back until June. You decide.
While I believe Martinez…I do not think the Mets will take a risk in letting him return sooner than expected.
Valentin is soooooooo 2006!
But an 8 hitter with the pop that he had was a huge difference maker. Not to mention, the guy played a more than solid 2B.
seriously tho… where does this guy fit on the roster?
Can he play first base once in a while?
Bingo!
He’s not on the 40-man, and, as far as I can tell, is not on one of our minor league rosters. Is he under contract?
I believe he is currently listed as a consultant.
Maybe we can just sign his mustache?
That would be a good insurance policy should Keith have to go on the DL if he goes overboard trying to “even things out.”
wonder why the article refers to him as ‘TONY’???
Yeah, what is that???
He is being cast as Tony Manero in the 35th anniversary remake of Saturday Night Fever Carribe’.
If nothing else I’d like to see this guy around the clubhouse because I always heard he was a good influence/mentor for Jose Reyes. Valentin hasn’t been around the team for the past year - who knows - maybe it’s part of the reason Reyes hasn’t been doing as well as he once did.
Getting Reyes “right” may be the most important thing this team needs to do for the future of this organization. They need to do whatever it takes to do that, including bringing back Rick Downs as his personal hitting coach if possible.
And I can’t let Valentin’s contribution to the team in 2006 be over-looked. He pretty much came out of nowhere to take over the 2B job and hit around 18 HR’s in the 8th spot in less than a full season. Not bad.
