Note: Piazza and NYC
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 29, 2008 12:27 pm

In a post to his outstanding blog for the Journal News, beat writer Peter Abraham lists Mike Piazza among six possible replacements for Yankees C Jorge Posada, who was recently put on the disabled list for the first time in his career.

…this would bug me…sorry, but it would…i mean, i don’t want to stand in mike’s way, but i believe this would hurt his legacy among Mets fans, assuming he cares about that…and if he struggles in the bronx, he will end up burning his entire bridge to New York City - at least in the short term…

…practically speaking, since he has not played in nearly seven months, i would think he’d need at least a few weeks of extended spring training, and since the Yankees need a back-up solution now, i am not sure mike is their answer anyway

No way Piazza is going to the Yankees. They need a catcher, not a DH. Abraham is just floating ridiculous ideas that will never materialize just to piss Mets fans off…

Agreed…Piazza is more of a DH than a catcher. When it comes to playing the back-stop he is definitely past his prime. This is non-sense. Piazza is and will always be a Met!

ps…..Havent Met fans been through enough? Ya got half the fan base looking to jump off the freakin bridge. This story by Peter Abraham is a bunch of garbage.

Im holding back Matt!

I don’t understand how this story is a bunch of garbage. Piazza is a legitimate option for the Yankees. Will he hurt his Mets legacy? No. Gooden and Strawberry hurt their legacies with drugs and being selfish. Cone? Who cares.

Again, the New York media the past couple of days have come under a firestorm from fans because of how they portrayed the Carlos Delgado situation. Everybody says it’s a non-story. But you know what, we are in the most competitive media market in the world and all of those print reporters have a tremendous amount of pressure put on them everyday. I’d like to see you or anyone else who comes on here to complain about the media walk in their shoes for one day. The people who complain about the “negative” stories are the same ones who read the trash on tmz or People. So what if Peter Abraham suggested Piazza as a replacement. Big deal. The purpose of his blog is to talk about things like that, just like this one is.

While I think you argument is valid, the whole idea of Mike ever going to the Bronx is garbage.

I see you point………..and this is my point!

That’s a Met fan perspective!

Just because there is pressure to write stories it doesnt make it ok to write nonsense and stir up controversy. Piazza is not a catcher anymore the story is ridiculous and Abraham should be embarrassed.

I retract my statment , Abraham merely pointed out who is available and didnt suggest that Piazza was a serious option. Although it is ridiculous to suggest that he is an option his article was ok.

Gooden
Strawberry
Cone

Met fans don’t like them anymore?

I would like to see Piazza play this year just so he doesn’t have to go into the Hall of Fame with Clemens and Bonds. If it’s as a Skanky, so be it.

Clemens and Bonds have as good of a chance at making the HoF on their first ballot as Shawn Green. And even after the first ballot, it might be years and years, assuming they ever even get the nod.

It would still ruin it for Mike. Even if they don’t get in, all of the talk will be about them not getting in.

I like Mike Piazza a lot. He’s a stand-up guy and a solid citizen.

It wouldn’t bother me one bit if he signed with the Yankess for the rest of the year. I hate to see him just drift away from baseball. With all the crappy players that are in the game right now, I don’t quite see why no one has room on their team for him. He can’t catch all that much, but I think in the right situation he could still produce some with the bat.

So I would like to see him back in the game. He’s still a Met in my book.

Yankees fans love to claim gooden, straw, and coney…….especially coney. Makes me sick to see Cone on YES.

It doesn’t make me sick because he just isn’t that good on the broadcasts. The Mets have, hands down, the best broadcast team on television.

So while I liked him as a player, the Yankees can have Cone as a broadcaster.

Maybe he need some guys around him that are more fun…..Like our guys at SNY. I think country boy O’Neill and Michael Kay kill and enthusiasm.

what’s the big deal? and the inferiority complex continues…whatever, if Piazza wants to play again and the Yanks (or any team) wants to give him a shot, more power to him. He can’t really catch anymore anyway, so i don’t see why this is evena story, but whatever, there’s no reason not to wish Piazza well in whatever endeavor he so chooses.

Bravo.

And wouldn’t it be a little poetic justice that Piazza finishes his career, hopefully with some dignity, with the Yankees, while Roger Clemens sinks further and further into shame and disrepute.

And as far as Clemens’ affair with Mindy McCready, she sang a song about steriods in basebally — “Guys Do It All The Time.”

I really doubt it’d hurt Mike’s legacy one bit, especially if he was unable to perform. Yankee fans already hate him, so all they could do is hate him more…but who even cares what they think? And if a Mets fan begrudges Mike the oppurtunity to play as long as he possibly can, screw them too. Mike’s one of the greatest Mets of all, and anyone who knows anything knows he’s going into the Hall as a Met.

The Yanks need a catcher. Piazza is on the open market. of course his name is going to come up. I doubt the Yanks will want to go that route.

make all tjhe comparisons to the other players as you want, people in NY will always see Mike as a Met. he may be able to help the Yanks, but he is obviously not the same player he was when he was a Met. any argument to the contrary is just unreasonable. all this stuff about legacy and everythign else is overrated. players switch teams all the time now. Boston was so upset when Johnny Damon left the “Idiots” and red Sox to join the “Evil Empire” Yankees. who cares? it is a business to them. they need to go where the money is.

i dont believe piazza will go to the bronx at all, no way in hell. all do respect posada is the hart and soul of the yankees and me as a mets fan give great respect to jorge posada one of the best catchers all time in new york baseball history, i wish the mets could have a man like posada that long ,like we did with piazza, mike we miss you terribly , but hey schnieder, cassanova look pretty good , but this is what the mets have to suffer i guess since losing lo duca in the off season due to free agency and i am not critizing omar minya for not going after posada who was a free agent but the mets would have been pretty good as they are right now if they had posada hell maybe even better , with just April now over the mets could have been well over 20 wins right now sitting pretty in 1st like last year ,but this year the catcher slot will go down to the wire i like schnieder i’m pulling for him , as well as cassanova too.

Mike Piazza is the #1 best all time catcher as a Met. He will always be remembered as a Met and nothing else. As a Met fan i would hate for him to go to the Yankees, but on the other hand, I want him to play as long as he possibly can. I want Mike to get back out on the field, if it is just for a year. What some people dont understand is that once you play in the majors, you are willing to do almost anything to get back out there and play again. So all in all, i say if they make the offer, take it, because you dont know if the chance will come by again.
