In a recent report for FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal lists roughly 20 players who could be on the trade block this summer, ranging from Reds OF Adam Dunn to Pirates 1B-OF Xavier Nady to A’s RHP Joe Blanton and Rich Harden.
Regarding Nady, who is of interest
to Mets fans, as well as Jason Bay, Rosenthal writes:
“Nady is off to his usual fast start, and the Pirates should begin exploring the market for him immediately. Bay, too, is hitting, but his defense in left field draws as much disdain from rival executives as Dunn’s. Both players are under control through 2009 - Nady is earning $3.35 million in arbitration this season…The Pirates’ new front office was largely inactive last off-season, gambling that Bay, in particular, would restore his value. As the deadline nears, the team figures to turn more aggressive.”
Meanwhile, in the New York Times, Josh Robinson talks with Nady about his time with the Mets.
According to Robinson, though Nady has been the topic of trade rumors, “Mets GM Omar Minaya and Pirates GM Neal Huntington declined to comment on the possibility of a trade.”

I wonder, seriously looking past his recent struggles, if the Pirates would be interested in Heilman?
I wonder, if Pedro ever returns, and Figgy keeps it up, if the Mets will look to move the Fig. I hope not, because I enjoy his story immensely, but one would have to assume the organization will continue to put more stock in the nearly 10 years younger Pelfrey–assuming he develops accordingly.
Just curious what people thinks could be had for Figgy is his ERA/WHIP stay about the same by the All Star break — assuming Pedro is back.
I would assume Figgy stays and takes the long man role.
i hope so.
If his ERA/WHIP is the same by the All Star break, the Mets should chain this guy to the dugout and not move him anywhere. This isn’t the time to trade capable starting pitching for the Mets…
Agreed, plus I just love the guy, but you have to wonder…
Once Pedro comes back, assume the Mets go with Big Pelf in the rotation. Figs goes where, Pen or AAA (does he have options? I can never figure this out?).
Say Figs goes to Pen. Presumably he replaces Sosa, who would have to be DFA’d (right?). So essentially we would get nothing.
If Figs could bring back a player that fills a need, is he that much better of a long man than Sosa? I’m not sure.
All that said, I’m not sure when Pedro returns we shouldn’t just stick with Fig and send Pelf to AAA…
It’s hard to make these assertions right now. Pedro’s return is still some time away. I’m guessing Willie/Omar will have to wait until that date gets a little closer before dealing with this (good) problem. There’s other stuff to address right now…
Say Figs goes to Pen. Presumably he replaces Sosa, who would have to be DFA’d (right?). So essentially we would get nothing.
No, the Mets would get a decent long man reliever.
This is the question, right? Is the marginal benefit of Figgy over Sosa as the long man more than the benefit of theoretical player traded for Figgy?
Anyway, agree that it is a good problem to have. And reiterate that all of this turns on the development of Big Pelf, anyhow (IMO).
I heard somewhere that hitters are hitting .094 against him the first time through the lineup. I am not saying he should replace Heilman, but don’t you think with Smith improving, the addition of Matt Wise, and the return of Duanar Sanchez that Heilman is expendable? When Pedro comes back Figgy could be a nice piece to the bullpen. Heilman will be viewed as a starter elsewhere and hence bring back more value (he has to be the equivalent of two prospects). I’ve lost that heilman feeling.
I don’t think the Mets should trade for another outfielder. Alou will be around long enough to make that unnecessary, and Church is looking like an everyday player. I am happy with Pagan and Endy as reserves, and I don’t see how the Mets can carry 6 outifelders on the team. If anything, I would love for the Mets to trade for Blanton. Their rotation would be top notch (Pedro as the #5) and they wouldn’t be forced to resign Ollie next season. Unfortunately Blanton is on the A’s which means that the Mets will never get him.
You just say Alou will be around long enough. The closer he is to coming back means the closer he is to being injured again
Kinda lost me there. Who would Blanton replace in the current rotation?
Not to mention, Nady may not be the 5th/6th outfielder, he could be the 1st firstbaseman!
I would guess that they would want younger players that they can rebuild around. Otherwise, why trade Nady. Also, an above-average everyday player is worth more than an above-average reliever, so it would definitely require more from the Mets. Unless the Pirates think there’s a chance they can turn him into in a starter.
And, my worry is that the Pirates would undervalue him, weighting too much his recent struggles, and not weighting enough his recent past success.
Fundamentally, it’s kind of annoying that we’re setting the summer trade block on April 30.
Bothers me more in years the Mets suck and the vultures start swirling…but come on. Let’s at least get to Memorial Day before we tell teams to start putting their players out on the front lawn…
As for Figgy, I doubt he will command much at all.
I think this is all set up by the buzz generated by this past offseason’s hot stove. It was the most active (media wise) offseason ever, and trading buzz will swarm around non-stop this year and years going forward. There are now way too many resources available for things to remain quiet…
Would Dunn be a fit on this club?
I really don’t know, there are so many factors that would play in.
Can he play the outfield, at all?
What do we do with Delgado?
What would it cost to get him?
Do we have a shot at Teixeira next year?
Would his style of hitting (high OBP, HR, K) fit in the lineup?
I said right before the season starts I would like Dunn on this team if Delgado continues to struggle a lot. I just don’t know if we have what it takes to get him.
Yes, he can play some outfield, but not well just like his first base skills.
And, would his “style” of hitting fit? Is this a joke? What the heck does it matter if he K’s a lot if he manages to get on base and hit a bunch of HRs and doubles? That “style” of hitting fits on any team in league.
Come to think of it, Dunn does fit right in — he could be any one of the guys not hitting in the middle of our order.
Hitting a robust .200 with RISP to start the season, and a whopping .222 for his career with RISP in 856 AB’s.
Clutch, defined.
No thanks…quite possibly the most overrated player in The Bigs. And when you look at it closely, it’s not a whole lot better than what we have right now.
Pass.
Overrated? Are you kidding. Have you actually looked at his stats or did you just skip over to the horrible stat that is RISP? This guy is constantly maligned for his strike outs, yet he continues every year to post a OPS above .900 and drive in over 100 runs. And please don’t bring up the ridiculous “clutch” argument, as I just said he drives in 100 runs almost every year and scores 100 runs almost every year, that is RUN PRODUCTION defined.
Everyone thinks they want Adam Dunn until they’ve actually seen him play everyday. I had the unfortunate experience of living in Cincinnati during a year away from New York. If you have access to Reds games, watch him for two weeks, then come back and tell me you want him on this team. Don’t just look at the numbers.
By the way… He HATES New York.
For someone who can consistently hit 40 HRs, you should be able to drive in more than 100 runs. Dunn has to be one of the most unclutch, overrated players I’ve seen. He walks, strikeouts, and hits meaningless HR’s. Please do not trade for him. It would be a huge mistake
I don’t play the clutch-card….but every single one of these concrete “100 RBI Guys” takes a significant hit as soon as they don the orange and blue — facts are facts.
Dunn’s a free-swinging big boy — who plays in one of the most hitter friendly environments in The Bigs.
A “nice” year for him, is hitting .250….pencil him in as close to a lock for 40 HRs and a .370-ish OBP as you can. But remember, that’s as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
I don’t see Dunn as a NY-type of player — and believe he’d just add to this current mish-mosh in the middle of the order.
Who knows, maybe he might ultimately be pretty decent acquisition to add to this kind of lineup — but I’d have to believe that Shea would knock his power numbers down quite a bit (and yes, I remember the bomb he hit at Shea a couple years ago….) — but I don’t see him being worth the cost it’s going to take to get him over here.
Unless Cincy decides to “just rid themselves” of him — something Jocketty’s very likely not gonna do in one of his 1st moves.
Also, remember Anna Benson? When I was there, this guy’s WHOLE FAMILY was barking about the Reds organization. I think it was his parents who were calling the sports talk shows, but it was definitely close family members and there was a lot of ******* and moaning going around. They were probably trying to help him get out of Cincinnati, but whatever it was, it was very bush league. Now I am a Mets fan, but I am a baseball fan too, and I watch and listen to everything I can. From my experience, this was not something you want or need here.
“Meaningless home runs”, WOW. You guys are ridiculous with this clutch nonsense. Okay, a guy hits 40 hrs, 100 RBIs, 100runs, OPS of .900+, a career OPS+ 130, but no, you wouldn’t want him because his home runs don’t count.
Simply dumb.
I don’t want him because he would cost too much in a trade. How about that one.
Can we leave this to discussion of his production and not tabloid junk like whether he would want to play here or crap about his family?
There is no indication that this will/could happen anyways, nor do I think it will. I just think he would fit great in the lineup batting 5th replacing Delgado, which is, again, not likely to happen.
Good answer realsince86. I don’t think this has a chance of happening anyways, because well, we don’t have a lot to give up at the moment.
How is it tabloid junk when I was THERE and actually heard and saw it going on?
If you don’t want to believe me, that’s one thing, but it was most definitely not tabloid junk, and you don’t think that kind of stuff effects production?
Hey, go get him. He’ll hit more HRs than Delgado. Make the deal.
Nope — not really…..just never viewed him as a guy that was a fit here.
Everyone seemed to fall in love with him through the years, and now is not the time to try to acquire him — he’ll cost too much.
I mean…don’t get me wrong — of course you explore and assess the situation with a guy like Dunn, but you don’t go overboard and break the bank at this point with a guy like Jocketty taking over the reigns.
Dunn hitting behind Beltran, though — would automatically get him more quality pitches….right off the bat.
I still say save whatever chips you may have left — and break the bank on Teixeira next year (not likely to happen, but I’d rather attempt than trade for Adam Dunn.)
Defense is a factor here, also….and Dunn’s not the answer anywhere. F-Mart comes up, and Dunn’s our 1st baseman? No thanks.
I would much rather save our money and prospects and get a young guy like ummmm, Kendry Morales.
Rosenthal also writes in that article that the Orioles would consider giving up Bradford or Jamie Walker for a prospect or 2.
I’d love to get Bradford back here. Especially if there is a way to get rid of Heilman. The O’s would have to cover a good part of the cash for Bradford I think.
One of the main reaons they didn’t resign Bradord was because the O’s were offering him an insane contract. 3 years 10 million I think it was, which was insane for a middle reliever at the time.
Ironically they ended up signing Scho for the same deal. I think even maybe a little bit more like 3 years 10.8 million. That’s a lot of money too be tied up into middle relief specialist, but as long as it doesn’t cost too much (financially and/or prospects) I think it would be great to get him back over here.
Bradford also went early on in the offseason when the Mets were still trying to land Zito and needed to focus on that. Once Zito fell through, Omar essentially offered the same contract to Schoenweis that the O’s offered Bradford.
BTW, how big a bullet did the Mets dodge by not signin Zito? League worst 7.53 ERA and an 0-6 record. Guess we can add him to Park, Hampton, Brown and Pavano as over-hyped pitchers represented by Bora$. Should serve as a cautionary tale when it comes time to talk about a contract for Ollie.
Bradford has no role on this team with Smith performing. We don’t need another ROOGY.
I wonder if Joe Smith (young, pitching well, and cheap) + one of Carp/Evans/Murphy could get it done (for Nady). Probably not at this point, but if those three keep mashing at AA, Smith remains effective at the ML level, and Nady hits a slump; in a few weeks, who knows…
I like Joe, but really he’s just a righty specialist. Big picture, I think Heilman has more value, anyway. He just need to work out of this funk. Plus, it would be foolish to deal Heilman when his perceived value is so low. Despite the cries from the masses that he only pitches well against bad teams and always fails in the big spot, the guy’s actually been one of the best middle relievers in baseball for the past few years (since moving to the bullpen). Middle relievers are like the offensive lineman of MLB in that people only really take notice of them when they screw up.
My 2 cents.
hooray! i thought i was the only one left defending heilman. he’s going through a rough patch right now, relying a little too much on his changeup. if he could show some faith in his mid-90s fastball (which he’s managed to dial up to 97 on more than one occasion) and maybe work the slider in a bit more (which has been effective from time to time), i think he’ll be fine. plus we know he’s always been more of a second-half guy, which is good because we don’t know how dirty’s arm will hold up over the course of the season.
if the fans could show the man a little support instead of booing him every time he emerges from the dugout, i think it would help a little too. the yadier-f’in-molina moment notwithstanding (a moment that should have been mitigated by scoring some runs earlier), we would have been in trouble in ‘06 without aaron, particularly after dirty’s accident.
if the team does trade heilman, i believe they will live to regret it.
I like Aaron too, but i bet he bolts for another team when he becomes a free agent with promises of starting.
that’s the only valid reason I see for trading him: he’ll eventually sign with another team who might start him, and at least will not boo him before he takes the mound. All other “reasons” for getting rid of him make no sense.
mets can’t contend if situation at 1B continues as doleful as it is. they need to get a 1B-man who can hit over .200. delgado was a great slugger, but the operate word is “was.”
i meant “operative” word — sorry
i wouldn’t trade any of the mets pitchers be it relievers or 5th starters. if we learned anything the past few years it’s that pitchers (pedro, duque, sanchez) get hurt and it’s impossible to replace them.
i wouldn’t give up on heilman so quick. he is a good reliever compared to his peers. he always gets stronger as the year goes on. his second half stats are great the past 3 years.
Hey we finally disagree on something. I think you have to make a trade to get something for a few of these players. I want Smith to be around all year. Figgy needs to stay and be the long reliever. That gets rid of Sosa but there is room for one more to go. It does not do any good to have them in the minors if their big league counterpart is not performing.
I would trade Sosa and Heilman. 1 because Sosa is replaceable and 2 because Heilman will always have a black cloud over his head here. Trade him while we still have him to a team that values him.
I disagree totally that it is impossible to replace starters/relievers — when you are talking about middle relievers, especially.
It seems impossible to me that C. Vargas, Armas, Bostick, Lugo, Stokes, Muniz, Collazo, later in the season Kunz, on average, could not replicate the performances, on average, of at least Sosa and Heilman.
you named 8 pitchers who have never had a successful mlb season pitching in middle relief. heilman has had three good seasons at the bac of the bullpen.
heilman’s second half era:
2007: 2.27
2006: 2.65
2005: 0.68
Does the first half not count?
Besides, I don’t doubt that he will still be decent but I am not sure he will ever get over the hump and be accepted here. Thus he will leave. Why not get something for him?
just trying to illustrate that it’s too early to give up on heilman.
full season era’s:
2007: 3.03
2006: 3.62
2005: 3.17
Not bad at all. I think he has tallent but I don’t think we will ever view him as dominant here. He is th 7th inning guy here at best and may still have value as a starter and reliever.
Figueroa’s history in middle relief is not really any better (3.61; compare Sosa (4.85); Vargas (4.82)), and yet every commenter above (incl. me, possibly)seems to think Figgy belongs there when Pedro returns.
Middle relievers are fickle. It’s just the nature of things. I haven’t given up on Heilman, I just hardly see him as untouchable.
Looking at what i just wrote, what it really illustrates for me is simply get Sosa out of here! :)
Agreed Zen. Can we stop with the short sightedness and short-term memory. Heilman is a solid setup man in his prime who is going through a slump. And, he wants to start and yet his is being a good teammate and accepting his role.
Why he is treated like a bum is beyond me. He’s a great asset to the pen and there’s no reason not to think he’ll return to form as a reliable 7-8th inning guy.
I really think the Mets should trade for Adam Dunn!! We would get a LFer and 1B back-up…. and Chavez could always come in, in the 8th for Defense. we would also get a clean up hitter.
Also for Alou to remain healthy have him platoon with Delgado at 1B . And we should also move Church back to hiting second and have Castillo platoon with Easley and Marlon.
1.Reyes-SS
2.Church-RF
3.Wright-3B
4.Dunn-LF
5.Beltran-CF
6.Alou/Delgado-1B
7.Castillo/Easley/Anderson-2B
8.Schnieder-C
Who do you imagine we trade for Dunn?
Parnell,Sosa and a prospect
Are you serious? Don’t you think they could get a lot more than that? Parnell is a midrotation at best, Sosa has almost a 7.00 ERA and is not signed past this season. That prospect would have to be Fmart with that package.
Maybe Heilman, Parnell, and Carp would get it DUN but that’s too much.
Not a great time to move Parnell. He’s doing horribly in Binghamton at the moment, so his trade value’s about as low as it could possibly be.
You really think Marlon can play 2B?
Well, no but as a backups backup yes.
i was thinkin the same thing about alou at 1st.
That one really has got to die. Alou is not going to play 1B. Everyone gets on Delgado defensively but at least he has played the posiiton.
i don’t think the mets are really in the market for a trade to bring in a guy like Dunn or Nady, even though I would love to see Nady back here…They have enough young guys to plug the holes next year and Church has been a really nice addition and if he can put up consistent numbers for the season, there is a crowed outfield…I still say if Delgado is struggling in June or July, we bring up Carp and see what he can do, what’s the harm? I know Wright is a special case only spending a month at AAA, but carp can do the same thing…be it a bit different on a team in a pennant race…I don’t know…I just don’t want to trade away what youth we have when it’s not completely neccessary…I mean, if pedro comes back and can stay healthy, I would say yeah, sosa/figgy/hielman, one of them could be trade bait for something, but I just don’t see it… don’t know…it’s april…a lot will happen and change before the deadline…
LET’S GO METS
NLCS 7th game, tie game, Mets-Cubs at Wrigley, top of the 9th, go-ahead runs at 2nd and 3rd. Who do you want a t the plate, Carlos Delgado or Mike Carp?
Is that a trick question?
delgado does srikeout most of the time and cant rlly hit line drives and if ur inplying that carp isnt good then mayb u should wait and see what he does once he gets the call
Who did we give up to get Nady again? I can’t remember. Was it Heath Bell and somebody?
Cameron
cameron, and it was incredibly unpopular at the time.
I hated it, I thought we could’ve gotten more in a market that was CF-deficient. Reason # 219 I’m not a gm.
Anyone else think Bay would be a great addition to the team besides me? I know he hasn’t lived up to his expectations but that’s partly why he’s on the block right? We could potentialy get a diamond in the rough here.
Not to mention he’s young and under contract. I’m not sure that Heilman would be enough but we could package Heilman and ? for him.
We could potentially replace our LF and get someone who’s equivelent to Delgado’s power (30/35+ HRs). Thoughts?
