Johan Santana, talking to reporters following last night’s game, when asked if he appreciated the fans cheering for him as he walked off the field:
“The thing is, you always have to have their support, day in and day out, because they are a big part of what we do here. On the bad days, on the good days, if they’re always out there supporting us than we feel more comfortable…But, we understand, there are very demanding fans in this city and they want us to win – and there is nothing wrong with that. So, we know they are pretty demanding, but at the same time we are human beings, we’re gonna make mistakes and sometimes we’re not gonna have a good day, but it’s all how you bounce back and at the end hopefully the results will be very positive for everybody.”

And this is why you have to love the guy. What a professional.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is wrong with him? What a pompous, arrogant…
Oh wait. Sorry.
It was really nice to see the applause for Johan. Even though he left the bases loaded, he still pitched a good game.
He’s a class guy. And, it’s good to know the boo-ing he received a few weeks back did not get to him. He knows it’s a business and as a paid employee he has to deliver. Kudos Senor Santana! I’m glad he’s a Met!
Johan is a class guy, an extremely talented athlete, and most importantly, a Met for the next seven years.
Of course, that won’t stop the jackals at Shea from booing him if he gives up 4 runs in 6 innings in his next start at home.
translation: please stop booing Delgado and Heilman everytime they set foot on the field.
Exactly, he’s criticizing the boos in an intelligent way.
But he’s definitely criticizing the fans. And I agree with him 1 million percent (which is a lot)/
sorry, but no…… Delgado deserves the boos until his performance improves.
and that is your opinion, lets please not start up this argument again
he certainly does…as you you can read in Johan’s comments above, the booing is helping…
I agree with spock 1 million percent…… Wait, two million percent, and that’s even more……
Yep, you defeated my agreement.
Save your boos for the other team, or for a Met who’s popping off, making trouble, being a distraction to his teammates and manager, or who’s dogging it and obviously doesn’t care.
Booing a guy like Delgado, who’s doing everything in his power to figure it out, and who we NEED to produce in the middle of the order, is just WHINING, plaining and simple.
Amen Johan.
For the love of Wally Whitehurst Mets fans, can we please support this team and be the proverbial “6th Man” and give the team some home field advantage.
Criticism is fine, just make it constructive (most of the time). Save the booing for when its warranted and necessary to send a message.
I’m tired of this vocal minority booing and making us look bad.
10th man. i was booing the booers last night at shea. they did not like it. turn about is fair play.
I was at the game last night and I cheered, I just had to, because the guy really tried his best it was cold and he got roughed up on aton of foul balls!
We should boo him after he does well. He won’t know what’s coming!
Why is the game being delayed?
anyone have any idea why the game is delayed?
water main break in the area is the reason for the delay. Scheduled 1:50 first pitch but they are in rain delay mode on WFAN. Shea can’t come down quick enough. now if only they can improve the area infrastructure and get rid of the chop shops
Water main break. I think they are giving time for the fans to get to the game.
its like johan had a crash course in talking with the new york media. his answers and comments always seem to be exactly what needs to be heard
What is up with “Other” being the reason the game is delayed???? What could that possibly mean??
I read in the pre-game comments section that a water main broke, delaying fan entrance to the stadium, and thus putting the start off by 20-30 minutes.
Appreciate the info. Since I’m all the way out in Puerto Rico I depend on “Gameday”.
That’s because the probably did!!! This stuff is written by Mets P.R. people and regurgitated back from the players.
Call me crazy, but I don’t think Santana can really speak as knowledgably about the booing as some other Mets.
He wasn’t here in 2006 when the fan support was tremendous.
He wasn’t here in 2007 when for a majority of the fans remained supportive, despite the team playing lackluster baseball.
He’s only been here a month and seen the negative impact that the endings for 2006 and 2007 have had on the way the team is treated in 2008.
Part of the reason people have been booing is because at times both this season and last, the team has looked TOO comfortable in losing.
Who cares how supportive the fans were in 2006, though? Everything was going well. How hard is it to be supportive in that environment?
The challenge is right now and we as a fan base are failing miserably.
you nailed it!!! they look too comfortbale in losing!!!
BTW…I am in too good of shape for exercise, I am just overall too healthy…
veteran team guys…and the young guys on thsi team are all Pro’s…they know that if they are one of the best 5 teams of all time they are still going to lose 60 games, so yeah…losses arent taken as hard when you are out there tomorrow only a few hours later.
Comfortability is incorrect, Realistic is the correct term and do not BOO anyone because of 2007, that was 2007!!!! go boo Jeff Conine, Green and Carlos Gomez.
I’m so sick of this BOOing debate, but I’m also sick of the way it’s being framed. Mets fans aren’t DEMANDING, they’re PASSIONATE — and there’s a big difference between the two. We care. We get pissed when they lose and piss ourselves when they win. Focusing on the negative side without acknowledging the positive is poisonous.
There are plenty of passionate fans that don’t boo. It’s too simple to put it in those terms.
I’m pretty passionate. I’ll see every game this year, many in person. I keep up with the farm teams and I post game recaps for all of my Arkansas cronies who are mets fans on their sports board. I’ll play the Mets (and only the Mets) through at least one season of MLB the Show before the playoffs. My girlfriend is a Mets Fan. My children will be Mets fans. Hell, even my cats are Mets fans (you know those little batting helmets that Carvel ice cream comes in at Shea? I make them wear those during games.) I’ve never booed a Mets player at home. I don’t see a reason to. It doesn’t send any more message to the owners than the win/lose column, and it ruins the home field advantage.
and it ruins the home field advantage.
That’s the part that bothers me the most. I don’t see how the booers don’t see this. Yet they can’t help themselves because they “love” their team so much.
But they’re actually hurting it.
It just doesn’t reconcile for me.
that is the point right there, the booers are too selfish to realize that by booing, they’re hurting the team, not helping, and that without booing, it would create a better home field advantage, therefore making the team probably play better at home, which is what we all want. The booing is selfish, it has nothing to do with the team, it has to do with how the individual fans feel, which for some is more important then watching your favorite team play baseball and seeing them win. People are taking baseball way to personally basically and expressing their own angst, rather then sacrificing for the greater good to make the team play better. It really seems to be a part of this “me first” generation we’ve seen in society recently.
This “passionate” bull**** is just a way to make yourself feel better about boorish behavior. You are not more “passionate” about this team than the people who realize that Mets fans have taken home-field advantage away from this team. It’s clear in the hitting numbers, home and away. You call yourself a fan, but you’re actively hurting the team. That’s not passion, it’s an immature tantrum.
The flood gates have opened?
Literally!
Whining this much about the booing is worse than the booing itself.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Yeah, let us booers alone…. we don’t care if some fans don’t boo so why is it a big deal if we do?? We don’t complain about the non booers so, let us be.
go ahead, ruin home field advantage, make the players less comfortable, is that what you want? Because that’s what you’re doing. The non-booers care about the team, the booers care about their own feelings more then the team. Tell me who is more passionate now.
I think the booers care more about the team by showing there emotions then the fans like you who sit back and think everything is gunna be ok. the ones who dont boo are the women and children so thats the category ur in…ur histerical with the home field advantage stuff also..how did home field advantage work game 7 when we were cheering our asses off for 4 hours waving towels like maniacs…u dont know what ur talkin about and its sad
you’re right, home field advantage works every single time, no question, its not something that evens out over the course of a season where you end up doing better at home then on the road, nope, nothing like that. And yes, i’m a woman, and a child, because i don’t boo, i must say, quite a mature statement, thank you for standing up in what you believe and making a rational, mature statement to refute my comments. Booers care more then non-booers because non-booers are women and children, makes perfect sense now. Thanks for clearing that up. I’m just going to not boo and expect everything to work out in the end, because that’s baseball, and thats the Mets, we’re a winning franchise, so what is there to worry about? the expectations are always sky high, so why boo?
See what I was doing was making a joke and using an irrational statement like “only women and children boo” in a sarcastic way to show how comments like yours are just your opinion. There is no such thing as home field advantage in regards to fans. Obviously players play better in fields they have adapted to. But fans have never and will never effect an outcome of a baseball game unless your a certian Cubs fan. My sole reason for booing is showing my frustration with how the game has been PLAYED. Booing comes after bad plays not before from me. You cant group all the booers together like the point I was making in my last sarcastic post. Just like you cant group all non-booers together. Were fans and we can do whatever we want and it changed nothing
Didn’t sound like a joke guy….HIGH SCHOOL IS FUN!
They have to post that quote on the back of the tickets so maybe we can bring some common sense into Shea Stadium.
NEVER gonna happen man. Take a look at some of the people on this board.
Yeah, cause it’s the booing that makes the Mets lose.
Like in today’s game it’s the booing that has Perez walking everybody,
Or the booing that has Castillo booting double play balls.
Or the booing that has the Mets not cover bases on run down plays.
Perez with a Glavine like performance. Well if he keeps this up Boras is going to wish he negotiated that long term deal.
He’ll come back next time and throw an 8 inning 2-hit shutout…..this is what he does.
It’s maddening
Why is this staff incapable of throwing strikes? Does the jacket not think that’s an important part of a pitcher’s approach?
What did anyone expect today…we won three in a row…prime time for a stinker. Why should they show up ready to play today.
This is a textbook .500 team. The quicker we all accept it, the happier we’ll all be.
Sad but perhaps true
sad part is he is still going to get a big contract from someone.
That is sad but you are 100% correct.
Hey, let’s extend OP…..wait
I cant remember the Mets fielding such a fundamentally unsound team like this in years. What is going on? This is a friggin joke. Maybe it’s Willie, maybe not. Something is not right here.
Why are you guys so negative?
I mean, it’s only 7-0.
lol
Not just the weather making it feel like September 29.
And the response to a 7-run outburst by one of the worst teams in the league? Nothing. Against a pitcher with an 8+ ERA.
No heart. None. Hope they had a good time last night.
Damn…What’s going on with this team? No heart…no passion. TISK! TISK! TISK! WTF? Can someone tell me what’s going on?
I can’t believe the resemblance between Tom Gorzelanny and Chunk from the Goonies.
BABY RUTH!!!
This is all too much. I hope Willie gets fired before the 5th inning.
Why must we be subject to this horse s***
At least Figgy hit the ball!!!
Isn’t it amazing that Santana is out hitting Beltran, Reyes and Delgado? I’m sure I’m missing a bunch of others.
Do you think Santana has the arm strength for all the starts? How come that is the only time I feel good about this team lately is when he is on the hill?
so true and so sad
Because he’s the closest thing a sure bet we have in seen in quite a while. This sux.
This must be the truest and saddest statement about this season so far WOW!!!!
Forget booing. If I took a day off work to be at Shea today I swear I’d throw everything that wasn’t bolted down onto the field in protest of such a pathetic excuse for a major league baseball game.
I owned this team, everyone would get a refund. No one should actually have to pay for this slop.
As for Perez, he’s already given up 2 certain wins and blew this one before it started. Hope he and Boras have a fun offseason. Name Kyle Lohse mean anything to you, moron?
I’m sure the Pirates are really regretting trading your blank stare and complete inability to throw strikes today.
Relax santana just came in for Delgado, we will put up an 8 spot and figgy will get the win.
Your humor in the midst of a train wreck is just what I needed, thanks
The Wilpons delivered an “L7″ WEINNEE! *outside of santana*
People will never realize that booing makes no difference. Does cheering make the mets play better? Nope..people should stop saying things they have no idea about..delgado got cheered because he played well, now he gets booed because hes the worst player in baseball..its baseball and it should always be this way
Yes, cheering does make a team play better. While boos make them play worse. Which is why MOST teams in MLB have a home-field advantage. Except for the Mets. Thanks a lot, you booing lunkheads..
WOW your stupid.. They play better because they have a feel for there own stadium while visiting teams dont know opposing stadiums that well. You have just proved that u think ur opinion is better then others. FANS DONT CHANGE OUTCOMES OF GAMES.. u realize u just wrote “cheering does make a team play better” right..haaaaaaa wow
Im sorry for calling names but being called a lunkhead just hurts too much watever that means
Sorry SPINK but you are 100% wrong and thoroughly ridiculous. First off, care to explain the ludicrous concept “feel for their own stadiums?”
If teams have a home field advantage because of “feel for their own stadiums” then what happened to the Mets advantage last year? You don’t make any sense. Did they suddenly lose that feeling, lol?
Booing from the home crowd puts pressure on a player by creating a hostile environment. Most players play worse under those circumstances. It’s apparent you are not an athlete and have no conception of what it takes to perform as an athlete optimally.
Everyone knows a home field advantage whether in baseball or another sport is almost always due to the support of a home crowd.
Your comment is pure inanity..
You can keep going through life thinking being cheered loud makes players get more hits all you want. because that is exactly what your saying. If you really do believe this I think you should start evaluating your intelligence. If booing makes players play worse then cheering must make them play better..If you cant see the stupidity in that then you must be the LUNKHEAD.. i cant take anybody that says lunkhead seriously anyway so your idiotic comment makes perfect sense
The players themselves say that the booing hurts their performance. And it’s born out in stats, lunkhead.
And you never explained your ludicrous “feel for their own stadium” idea. That’s the biggest bunch of hooey ever given in this debate.
You can continue to try to defend your stupid booing. I’m glad most fans think your behavior is garbage.
I agree with Spink3 100%
The booing doesnt make the Mets lose, the booing makes most of us Mets fans look like jack-donkeys becuase of you morons. If the mets lose 7 in a row, please go ahead and boo….BUT YOU CANT CHEER AFTER EVERY HIT AND BOO AFTER EVERY OUT….YOU SOUND LIKE IDIOTS.
perhaps Boras can talk about OP in the same glowing terms he did for Zito.
And represent him like A-Rod
Problem is Boras is laughing all the way to the bank with his 10%
If the mets get no hit today will would you boo?
At this rate, we’ll find out.
delgado broke up the no-hitter…. booooooooooooooooooo
Matt,
I like how you didn’t editorialize. Let his words speak for themselves.
well done.
This is a great game to have right before a day off and a west coast trip where they go up against the hottest team in baseball right now. Way to get motivated guys!
I can only hope they make the trip without Willie
8-0, are we having fun yet?
how is pitching OP on 5 days rest Willie’s fault? Oh wait you know nothing of baseball and jump on every bandwagon statement possible, you were a Yankee fan in 05? keep idiotic comments to themselves.
“If Omar doesnt trade Gustavo Molina for Conor Jackson he should be fired!!!” did I get the true essence of you captured?
I’m missing something, what comment are you jumping on?
Hey Mota, are you referring to the Willie west cost trip thing?
Does anyone know if we can petition for a refund on the arbitration settlement? That was a well spent 10 million!!!!
Sorry 6.5 the ten looked like a six through the tears. My bad.
Is anyone watching the game? I’m doing the Gameday thing at work. I am interested in the mood of the crowd.
It’s too bad they can’t implode Shea after this season, then we could watch 3 collapses in 2 years.
Anyone want to start an over/under of when the Wilpons will fire Randolph and/or Minaya?
NOW why wait!
Given this is not just based on 1 month of baseball, but a carry over from last year…. his time is up!
Omar/Wilpons better start getting list of replacement candidates ready.
Minaya has nothing to do with this. It’s Willie’s job to have this team prepared to play, and 2-3 times a week they are simply unprepared to do anything.
The ride is over. Fair or not, Willie has to take the fall. This team needs a slap in the face, or several. There are bad days, and there are bad efforts. Too many of the latter.
wheres collapse number 2? ooo i forgot, the sky is falling again today…1diot ……. u people sound just like after the home opener, after we win tomorrow and win the series in arizona this game will be a distant memory just like that one
I find it amazing that you are attempting to defend this. This (the season) isquarely on Willie’s shoulders.
Gilch… Sounds like you been going to Willy school of “we’ll get them next time guys” keep sippin your champagne though.
Are you that’s champagne and not Willie’s brand of Kool Aid?
I agree with Santanaman…I’m at the point where I’m about to go crazy. I spend my hard earned money on Mets tickets, and I get in return an underacheiving overpriced team. How can you accept the Mets are losing by 13 runs, and to the Pirates out of all teams.
I was one of the few who said earlier, “It’s too early!” I no longer feel that way. This team needs to be held accountable. Willie needs to be held accountable.
we’re off tomorrow, pal, FYI
13-0, you have got to be kidding. I’m embarrased
ROFL i love the fire willie and omar talk after every loss …. and after every win for most of u
Not every losses, just 13-0 losses where you get 1 hit in 7 innnings off a pitccher with an 8+ ERA, make 3 errors and countless more defensive blunders, walk half the park, and generally play like you’d rather be watching Perfect Strangers reruns on Nick at Nite.
This is disgraceful. This team is never ready to play. Want to keep seeing this garbage every 4-5 days? Not me.
as I said in the game thread.
The Mets scouts above all will need to lose their jobs if this continues through the year.
Pull back all your Caribean scouts and replace all the major league and minor league scouts since they have absolutely done squat for this team the past few years.
The team does horrible against journeymen,
righty or lefty du jour that they haven’t never faced, (they seem to be doing well against lefties this year so maybe the scouts moronically just focused on scouting lefties this year)
horrible against rookies.
While opposing teams just sit and wait for their pitch against who ever we throw on the mound and tack on 13 runs.
I’d say at least 15 teams have better major league scouts than the Mets right now.
This has gone on for 3 seasons already. Time to clear house on the scouts and coaches.
Dave I am with you, this in on WILLY… There is no reason he deserves not to keep job.
meant….There is no reason he deserves to keep job.
agreed, he’s terrible. and this team has stopped playing for him. time for a new voice, ASAP.
At least Church isn’t sleeping like the other 8 players on the field today.
2 hits off guys with a 8 ERA and 13.50 ERA is pathetic.
My GOD! I was in a meeting and I just checked in on the game. I don’t blame the offense for not hitting after what Perez pulled. I wouldn’t want to bail him out either. Damn man. I love this team, but if this is a preview of what we can expect this year it’s going to be a long, long summer.
I concur
If they don’t ATTEMPT to bail each other out then they are a bunch of quitters. Which they are showing themselves to be.
Oh look another guy with over an 8 ERA.
I wonder what the scouting report is on him… oh wait they probably never had one done.
Why don’t you boo about it. WAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!
are you alright dude?
I miss Bobby Valentine.
I have been on the “fire willie” bandwagon for a while, so I’ll stop that…this team stopped playing for him last summer, and never started again.
I’ll take a more positive approach and instead of “Fire Willie”, I’ll start “Bring back Bobby V”
He’s only gone b/c of Steve Phillips, anyways, bring him back!
A lot of EARNED boos today for the metsis… haaaaa
was it bad? i am in work
:-(
hahaha you have no idea.
