Note: Hampton is Hurt, Again
By Matthew Cerrone - May 1, 2008 11:37 am

According to MLB.com, Braves LHP Mike Hampton left his minor-league rehab start on Wednesday after feeling more discomfort in his strained left pectoral muscle.

…i mean, is it even fair to write LHP before his name any more…seriously, at this point, until he actually gets a win in the major leagues, he should really only be referred to as left-handed – and leave it at that…it’s more accurate this way

the braves piching situation is in dire straits, and theyre still close in the NL east.

nobody is running away with the divison this year, guys…

    • Ceetar says:

Him..did the loss yesterday practically move us into first?

no one runs away with the division on May first.

Would Hampton make the All-Injury team with Prior and Pavano?

      • K-Hern says:

He should be considered the captain

      • ravi3 says:

He may be healthy now, but Wood has got to be there…Thats a pretty sick rotation

      • theperfectgame says:

Before we get on their case too much, I believe we’d have a few members on that squad as well…

        • gometzies_18 says:

Yeah…once they guy got $100 million and basically never pitched again, I’d say that pretty much makes him the MVP of the All-Injury team.

    • wrightnow5 says:

Should it be Hampton hurt, still…not again. When hasn’t he been hurt?

  2. Steal Home Jose! says:

Forget Moises Alou and batting practice.

If El Duque plays catch with Mike Hampton, who goes down first?

    • Xavier22 says:

At least we got some mileage out of El Duque in 2006 and half of 2007. When was the last time Hampton actually pitched for the Braves?

    • blains2000 says:

I think if El Duque ptiched to Mike Hampton with Moises Alou playing the field and Ramon Castro catching the time-space continuum would explode.

  3. giuseppe franco_procede says:

The contract he signed eight years ago continues to haunt him. When he signed with Colorado, the Mets received a draft pick, which turned into David Wright. Bad for Hampton, good for NY! Tough being Mike.

  4. Teufel Sheufel says:

In a season that has been very tough to stomach (thus far) as a Mets fan, this gives me joy.

  5. DjDeF says:

How about instead LHP Mike Hampton it is $FNP Mike Hampton. Translation “Paid for no pitching Mike Hampton”

  6. Jim says:

This guy makes Zito’s contract look like a bargain!

    • Steal Home Jose! says:

There was a Jayson Stark article on this the other day.

What would you rather have? A guy not pitch, or a guy lose every start he makes and have a 7+ ERA?

      • DerangedHermit says:

That’s easy. The guy that always gets injured. At least insurance can cover some of the deal.

  7. LaGrandOrange says:

This is gooooood news. always like craps news for Hampton… hope the school system is better near the rehab facility, Mikey.

How about Smoltz returning only as a reliever? the Braves are fooooked! Maybe Larry can pitch?

  8. deloid says:

It may just be the individuals involved that makes it seem so but doesn’t it feel like this has been one of the worst years for early injuries?

    • theperfectgame says:

Hey, that’s what happens when you get off the juice…

      • Mingo says:

It just makes me have to go more often.

      • Mr. Metster says:

That’s what Peter Gammons implied in a piece for Baseball Tonight the other day. He said that with testing in the minor leagues for something like nine years and in the majors for three years, older guys can no longer hide their injuries/deterioration. According to him, baseball has become a young man’s game – a seismic shift in his view – as reflected in the early success of younger teams.

  9. Midtown says:

What does the Braves rotation look like right now?

    Hudson
    Glavine
    Jurjens
    ????
    ????

    Scary.

    • Jaded1983 says:

Glavine is on the 15 day DL right now too

      • Steal Home Jose! says:

Glavine pitched 2 days ago, as far as I know, he didn’t reinjure himself.

    • NewYMets says:

Glavine actually came off and pitched decent on Tuesday. Looked like one of his typical starts for the mets… Gave up a bunch of hits early, settled down, and got lucky in only letting up two runs.

When a combination of Jeff Bennett/ Buddy Carlisle and Chuck James make up your fourth and fifth starters, you’re in trouble.

Its all nice and good that Smoltz, who is dominant when he is healthy, is going to be a closer, but someone has to get the ball to him. How many close, late games will they realistically be playing in with their rotation? Maybe two of every five?

Add that to their potentially solid offense, and something tells me we won’t be seeing a lot of Smoltz this year.

      • DjDeF says:

not for nothing but pelfrey and Figueroa aren’t exactly Drysdale and Koufax

        • NewYMets says:

True, but I’d rather them than Bennett, James and Carlisle.

I live in Atlanta and end up watching a lot of Braves baseball. Bennett has pitched well, but is better served as a long reliever.

James is usually good for 60 or so pitches, but often falls apart after that. He’s also doesn’t have a baseball mind (i.e. doesn’t use scouting reports properly in his approach to batters.)

Carlisle is just bad. Probably a ‘tweener’ who is only in the majors because there is nobody else.

Pelfrey and Figueroa both have pitched relatively well this season, and if Pedro comes back, our rotation is considerbly better top-to-bottom (Santana over Hudson, Pedro over Glavine, Maine over Jurjenns, Ollie over Bennett, and Pelfrey over James).

  10. bvaz says:

you ahve to wonder if the Braves start to really inquire into pitchers like Oswalt or anyone else that may be on the market. they definitely have the bargaining chips to go get someone if they become available.

all the more reason to be scared as long as the Braves stay within reach.

    • mrose says:

      they have the bargaining chips?
      who?

      • Midtown says:

I’m not sure why you’re surprised that they may have bargaining chips. Anybody remember the year when guys like McCann, Francoeur, Escobar, and Diaz all came up on fire, and haven’t slowed much since? I don’t know what their system looks like now, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if it’s stocked, as it always seems to be.

  11. marvelousmarv says:

But the more important question is, how is the school system?

  12. MikeinSS says:

    Hi Guys… Braves Fan here (always feel the need to acknowledge that);

First, Smoltz is a great guy, and a great pitcher; but he really overstepped by coming out in the press and saying he’s coming back as a reliever. Even caught Bobby Cox off guard (which is just plain discourteous), not to mention signaling every GM in baseball that we need a starter.

Anyway, Jo-Jo Reyes will step in initially… James still at AAA. Reyes has been dominant at AAA, but so far hasn’t been able to “command” his pitches in the majors. He’s a pretty good mid-rotation prospect, but is still just 23 and would be better served spending the year at AAA. He’s gonna get a chance to step up, though…. we’ll see.

  13. larry bearnarth says:

You know with all his injuries Hampton can inquire about the best schools in Atlanta for his children—this was the guy who was discontent with NY eduational system. Yeah right !!!

    • Jova1931 says:

I take offense to that, I work in the NYC educational system! =)

      • gipper91375 says:

That whole school system excuse was such a crock. Sure, the NYC schools stink for the most part (sorry, Jova). But the Hamptons had the cash to affor great private schools. The NY are has some of the nation;s best private day schools. Meanwhile, the Northeast has the best private boarding schools.

If the Hamptons wanted their kids to go to public schools, there are plenty of high-end suburbs close to Shea that have some of the best school systems in the country with union-free, very well paid and high;y trained/excellent teachers (see: Garden City, Great Neck, etc).

That said, I’m glad he used this BS excuse to leave us – it yielded us David Wright via the draft and the guy has been hurt ever since.

  14. Jova1931 says:

See guys, some teams have got problems like we do. This is why you can’t overreact to big wins, or really bad losses (ahem). The name of the game is consistency.

    • gipper91375 says:

True enough. Though, the consistency with the Mets has been…consistently mediocre and below expectations.

Frankly, no team really scares me in this division. Not the Phils. Not the Braves nor the fish. Certainly not the Gnats.

Well, one team scares me in this division….the NY Mets. They are the worst enemy of our beloved NY Mets. I hate those guys.
