His AAA numbers are pretty good but he didn't hit at all in brief stints in Japan or the Majors.

I hope FMart is ready, but it sure wouldn't surprise me if he needed one more year of seasoning. He's still very young. Plus, if they bring him up next year and he's not ready, they'll trade him for a bag of balls while his value is low.

Excellent post.

Although left field can hopefully be covered next year by FMart. So there's one less position to fill.

But overall very true and very shameful.

Doesn't this all go to remind that the Mets have no plan? This team will have to replace a first baseman, a left fielder and at least two starting pitchers next season, and there is nobody on the farm prepared to step in at any of those positions. That's pathetic. This team has got to be better about developing its own players. Look around baseball and you'll see many teams with homegrown players in starring and supporting roles. Even the win-now yankees have a ton of home grown talent. (And, no, I'm not talking about Hughes and Kennedy whose struggles thus far make the word "talent" questionable. I'm talking about Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, Cano, Cabrera, Rivera. They aren't young -- most of them -- but at some point even the Yankees with their constant pressure to win found a way to develop and integrate their young talent at some point.) Even if we did have people ready to step in, this team's history of sticking with homegrown talent is atrocious. The Mets suffer from a grass is always greener syndrome.

I'm not saying don't pursue Tex next year, but this team needs to serious work on its foundation. Otherwise it will continue the very frustrating pattern of compete with other teams' players for 2-3 years, totally collapse and stink for several years, rebuild using veterans of other teams and compete for 2-3 years before another collapse.

I don't buy the Santana trade excuse either because 1) that pool of players we traded wasn't all that talented to begin with (Gomez has tools, but his approach is horrendous) and 2) even a trade like that should not leave a farm system as barren as ours now is.
