For a live chat, head over to The Hot Foot Bleachers.

…i am not totally sure why willie is going with a sort-of secondary lineup against one of the best pitchers in baseball…odd, since a) alou hits well against webb, and b) alou only played six inning yesterday…but you win as a team and lose as a team, i guess, so, good luck, gentlemen…

First!

jose--jose-jose-jose May 3, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Really lame, dude.

NeedAnAce May 4, 2008 at 1:02 am

Now that Juilo Franco has officially retired, I would like to see the Mets hire him as a coach. I believe one of the key losses this team has suffered has been the loss of Franco’s presence in the dugout/clubhouse. Since he left midway through last season, the team has never been the same. I couldn’t stand watching him pinch hit, but he was a positive influence on Reyes, Beltran, Perez, and the rest of the young players. Everyone RESPECTED Franco. In my opinion, its very arguable whether or not they respect Randolph.

BRING BACK FRANCO, BRING BACK THE SPARK!!!!

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Clearly Alou must have had a very strenuous six innings last night.

NYMetsGrrl94 May 3, 2008 at 3:18 pm

are we supposed to guess the outfield positions? LOL!

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 3:19 pm

One step at a time, at least Willie kept Church in the two-hole

Gasface77 May 3, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Is this really “secondary?” Alou is out, but the guy has a broken ankle. Give him a break. Easley is an offensive upgrade over Castillo.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 3:28 pm

I thought they said his ankle was fine when he was cleared to join the team?

sundaysection15 May 3, 2008 at 3:28 pm

i agree. also castillo has said before that he needs a day off every now and then, why not give it to him today during a day game after a night game. also im a little nervous with a 35 old catcher playing day game after night game in the desert, however theres not too much willie could do about that.

metsdude13 May 3, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Alou’s hitting .478 in 23 career at-bats against Webb.

Why is he sitting?

zemonstar May 3, 2008 at 3:29 pm

he’s 41 years old :)

ravi3 May 3, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Well you have to realize that Webb is a much better pitcher now than in the past. Im guessing that Willie is going with Endy, because with his wheels will be a benefit during the enivitable ground balls, and also act to help avoid the double play. Also, Defense will be very important here, and Endy is better on that side of the game.

euchreking May 4, 2008 at 8:59 am

Way to stay out of the double play Endy!

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Last night was his first game since last thursday…i could be sore and its going to take sometime to get him into game shape. Dont everyone freak out. Im sure he will be in the lineup tommorrow. Atleast it isnt brady clark

DavidDog May 3, 2008 at 3:31 pm

hey anyone know the URL for that page where u can watch the game through TVants? The stupid Fox/MLB.tv combo is screwing me again (in my area its CHC-STL)

Danny1986 May 3, 2008 at 3:40 pm

huh….what are you talking about? I know of only MLB.com. and that has blackout restrictions. very frustrating.

I’m stuck with that same CHI-STL minor league game on FOX as well.

jimyager May 3, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Come on. Does anybody here really think that Big Pelf has a chance in hell of beating B. Webb? This is a lost cause. If we can come back from this road trip at 5-1, then, Willie may be safe. If I remember, last season we went out west and that trip put us in first place until the last day of the season.

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 3:34 pm

so if we go 5-1 on this road trip, you may consider Willie safe from beng fired? um, ok…but in all seriousness, Alou isn’t playing because you want to rest him, last year proved that Alou needs intermitent rest. Willie had him playing every game because he was hot, and look what happened, he got injured. Alou should be eased back, he has a swollen ankle I believe. As for Castillo, its a day after a night game, and Easley gives up more pop in the line up. No complaints for this line up, especially with facing Webb, which could be a loss either way with the way he’s pitching. I mean, we have our #4/5 going against their #1, hard to expect a win.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 3:32 pm

“Come on. Does anybody here really think that Big Pelf has a chance in hell of beating B. Webb?”

Sure, I do.

sincekindergarten May 3, 2008 at 3:37 pm

I agree. Pelfrey pitches a lot better when he has more than 4 days rest . . . and he has eight days rest. Also, Webb is due for a loss.

wallybackman'sfire May 3, 2008 at 3:44 pm

I agree. It’s baseball. The worst team can beat the best team, even the best pitcher on any given day. The worst teams still manage to win 60 plus games a year – and not all those wins come against bad starting pitchers.

So yes, the Mets have a chance to win….

farb09 May 3, 2008 at 3:33 pm

is it possible to watch Fox games on mlbtv?

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 3:35 pm

It’s nearly impossible to watch fox games on fox.

Worse, yet, we get no Giuseppe Franco commercials. Dammit.

Danny1986 May 3, 2008 at 3:39 pm

not now. from the website:

National Live Blackout (Regular Season): Due to Major League Baseball national exclusivities, for each Saturday game beginning April 19, with a scheduled start time after 1:10 PM ET or before 7:05 PM ET, and for each Sunday game that begins after 5:00 PM ET, all scheduled webcasts of such games will be blacked out.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 3:34 pm

And I’ve seen every Pelfrey start and many of Webb’s and I know what I’m supposed to believe. But the game still has to be played on the field.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Brandon Webb is due to have a bad game, although I wish the Mets had the one guy that owns him in the lineup

Danny1986 May 3, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Thank you WIllie. Thak you for keep Church batting 2nd.

Thank you for not messing this up.

dykstraw May 3, 2008 at 3:35 pm

oh my god. why the hell is alou sitting? if he’s not actually injured he has to play this game. sit him tomorrow when you need endy’s OF defense behind santana. so stupid.

DavidDog May 3, 2008 at 3:39 pm

like you dont need defense behind pelfrey….

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Though Alou does OWN Webb. Still…whatever. At least he isn’t hurt yet.

Ryan Church!!!

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Download TVants and watch the game through a website call myp2p.eu. Click on Live Sports then go to baseball and click on the mets game and press play…be patient it takes time to load. I watch the game through this route every saturday when MLBtv doinks you in the butt.

Go Mets

DavidDog May 3, 2008 at 3:40 pm

thanx

Danny1986 May 3, 2008 at 3:41 pm

if this works…i owe you a beer

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 3:45 pm

It usually works, sometimes it craps out…still waiting….

CitizenSnips May 3, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I’m getting a lot of japanese stuff. No Mets.

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I said be patient…It doesnt pop up like MLBtv. it takes time its a connection from Japan or some rook-like country

Steal Home Jose! May 3, 2008 at 3:52 pm

oh well, the game has started. I’ll wait for the archive.

off topic, attempting to watch the game with this japanese type all around remind me of when i woke up at 6am to listen to the Mets/Cubs season opener in Japan. Mike Hampton’s first game as a Met. He walked like 9 guys that day and blamed it on the weird pitching mound.

Steal Home Jose! May 3, 2008 at 3:46 pm

same here,

are we supposed to click on the 3/5/08 one or the 4/5/08 link?

Steal Home Jose! May 3, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Ah, I think they most it day/month.

3/5/08

Steal Home Jose! May 3, 2008 at 3:42 pm

[sarcasm]God I love saturday fox baseball[/sarcasm]

Goodbye all, I am about to go dark for the next 4 hours so I can watch the mlb.tv archive without knowing what’s happened.

Koko May 3, 2008 at 3:43 pm

I don’t think it has anything to do with a secondary lineups. It has to do with not having Castillo and Alou play a day game after a night game. Especially Alou considering he hadn’t played in over 8 days before last night and he still has ankle soreness. Castillo wants more time off and probably needs it. :D

Jay May 3, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Mike “Big Donkey” Pelfrey???? haha….

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Ugh…stuck with the audio feed today. Wayne Hagin really rubs me the wrong way.

Don Logan May 3, 2008 at 3:48 pm

webb didn’t throw a single strike to reyes. way to be patient jose. can we ever get 2 games in a row of a good reyes. yesterday great so today lost.

Jay May 3, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Dude, go easy on him. Brandon Webb is one of the best pitchers in the league.

Don Logan May 3, 2008 at 3:51 pm

i’m done going easy on him. he’s hitting .240 since the all star break and gives away too many at bats. it’s one thing to make an out to a great pitcher. it’s another to give away an at bat. make him throw a strike at least. the game just started. it’s like he goes up there w/ no approach. part of that is coaching. willie’s staff is not getting thru to reyes.

beltran the warrior May 3, 2008 at 3:56 pm

it was one at-bat. chill out, please.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Why must this team never take pitches?

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 3:48 pm

For anyone who watched on SNY last night and didn’t have any compassion for our out-of-market friends and the broadcasters they were subjected to, maybe now we can understand how lucky we are when we get Gary, Keith, and Ron.

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I understand Grace is on the Fox broadcast – he was half of the D-bag announcing team last night. Brutal.

metslikewhoa May 3, 2008 at 3:49 pm

games on fox are the absolute worst. these guys, in particular, are brutal.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Yep, I’m pretty sure the sound will be off and music will be on by the 3rd inning.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Pelfrey better be prepared to pitch the game of his life.

Gina May 3, 2008 at 3:53 pm

I get a feeling Pelfrey is going to have a great game today.

ryno May 3, 2008 at 3:55 pm

If we lose to Webb, hard to be too upset about it as he’s one of the best in the league. But does that mean Willie should sit down Alou who has hit VERY well against him in the past?

As for sitting Castillo, I think that improves the lineup.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 3:56 pm

rather have Castillo’s D

Gina May 3, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Alou is brittle. Willy was probably worried two games right away in a row would re-break him.

Although I’m sure Alou can find a way to get hurt on the bench.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 3:56 pm

When I am in charge of MLB there will be NO MORE black home uniforms. Not for any reason ever. It will be one of the first changes I make. They just haven’t called me and offered me the job yet.

khmustache May 3, 2008 at 4:11 pm

can you make the pirates wear their old style hats too? oh and can you outlaw hockey style catcher’s masks?

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Yeah, and I will make the Phillies go back to their old unis too. It was the one and only thing that I thought was resepectable about them. And the Mets would have TWO uniforms, period… And no, Oliver Perez, you can’t wear a black cap with the pinstripes!

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Can you also require Larry Bowa to wear a hockey style catcher’s mask? Just to piss him off, no other reason.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I’m not proud of what I was going to respond with on that one.

Crazy Nyce Dave May 3, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Agreed. We can call it the None More Black Rule.

Mo Vaughns Nutritionist May 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm

lol, no more black rule. dont you have a klan meeting to get to?

terpz06 May 3, 2008 at 3:59 pm

“i am not totally sure why willie is going with a sort-of secondary lineup against one of the best pitchers in baseball…”

because he’s a moron?

jose--jose-jose-jose May 3, 2008 at 4:13 pm

How is this “secondary.” Church is in the 2 spot, and many will argue that Easley is a better hitter than Castillo is (and I agree with that statement.)

The only downgrade we have is that Endy is in there instead of Alou, and that is because Alou is old as heck and he obviously can’t go back to back games yet because of how few rehab games he played.

Or we can just all sit around and just say that Willie is an idiot without doing fun things like using logic or reason. That sounds like it might be kinda fun.

euchreking May 4, 2008 at 9:00 am

I want Pagan in there.

Don Logan May 3, 2008 at 4:01 pm

day game after a night game. what do you expect?

jose--jose-jose-jose May 3, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Quote from whoever the heck is announcing the game today (Brennaman?)

“The Mets are really struggling with men in scoring position this year, they are batting .249.”

Naturally, the Mets are batting .253 as a team on the year, so of course, the Fox announcers are just dead wrong again.

…and so it begins.

jose--jose-jose-jose May 3, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Ok, it was Kenny Albert who said that. Good job, Ken.

Mets Fan on Wall St. May 3, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Come on, make them pay for their defensive mistakes.

Prismo May 3, 2008 at 4:12 pm

For those of you who are double-blacked out from the game (like me), you can still use your mlb.tv accounts to listen to the radio broadcasts. It’s better than nothing…

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Wayne Hagin is BARELY better than nothing. But, you do get Howie half the time at least!

CaveManJoe May 3, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Casanova swings a big stick….and the woman swoon.

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Awright Paul Casanova!!!

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:14 pm

At least they got a run. Would’ve liked to see the Mets clear the pitcher’s spot, but I won’t get greedy

Mets Fan on Wall St. May 3, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Better than nothing, but I’d try to pull the hit and run again. We’re not going to get that many fly balls so it’s one way to avoid hitting into too many DPs.

CaveManJoe May 3, 2008 at 4:15 pm

In other news… Julio Franco officially retired today.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I’m rooting for Pelfrey today, but I think — with only one pitch — he belongs in the bullpen. Sorry. But, I hope he proves me wrong.

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Pelf just got squeezed out of a strikeout and walked the leadoff man in the 2cd..

Jay May 3, 2008 at 4:21 pm

It always seems to start with an umpire semi squeezing a met pitcher. Then they just lose it. I wish pelfrey would stay aggressive and pitch inside.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Why does every inning with this guy have to be an ordeal?

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:23 pm

I’ll say what I said yesterday, this DBacks lineup is not that great.

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Should be one out already but no way an ump is going to give pelf the benefit of the doubt.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:25 pm

excuses are for Braves fans, Pelf has to pitch through it. He was 0-2 on the guy

CaveManJoe May 3, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Are these guns cranked up or is Pelf throwing 97?

DavidDog May 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm

totally cranked up (or maybe just REALLY dry air, but i think cranked up..), yesterday Maine was STEADILY arond 95-96…

Jay May 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Oh boy… commence delgado vitriol in 3…. 2…. 1…. ( and justified)

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Good Lord, Delgado stinks.

DavidDog May 3, 2008 at 4:29 pm

delgado needs to go. ill even chip in a 20 to eat up that contract

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:30 pm

I’d eat dog-sh^& before I gave Delgado a cent of my money

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:29 pm

No Mark, Delgado just sucks

Prismo May 3, 2008 at 4:29 pm

*obligatory demote Delgado, promote Carp comment*

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 4:30 pm

i think delgado secretly wants to play 2nd base…
lets see if Nuke LaLoosh can keep it together…

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Pelfrey sucks. Trade him for Nady.

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Why would Pitt make that deal?

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Ok, throw in Heilman.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Can’t kill Pelfrey for this inning

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Yes you can. The Mets gave him a 1-0 lead and he takes the mound and proceeds to walk to batters – who both scored. He’s totally to blame.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:36 pm

If the Mets had a real first baseman the game would only be tied right now. At least Pelfrey battled out of it.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:39 pm

That ball would have gone threw the infield anyhow. Maybe Castillo had a shot, maybe.

But, is that your definition of “battling?” And when is Pelfrey ever going to have a smooth 1-2-3 inning?

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Easley had that ball

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Even if Easley would have gotten it . . . Pelfrey still sucks.

CaveManJoe May 3, 2008 at 4:32 pm

That was ruled a hit?!

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:33 pm

For the love of god, how does Pelfrey, a guy who throws in the mid-90’s and dominated in college, not have a strikeout pitch?

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Because he had no second pitch to set-up his “strikeout pitch”, his fastball.

Koko May 3, 2008 at 4:33 pm

It wasn’t an easy play for Delgado. . . . And the two runs would never have scored (or most likely not have scored) if Pelfry could throw strikes a bit more consistently.

Rick Peterson proteges continue to show their inefficiencies.

CaveManJoe May 3, 2008 at 4:34 pm

literally a rich “young” man – my God these announcers are awful

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm

I’m the only one here, and I still had to say (outloud) “SHUT UP, WHO CARES?” These guys are worse than awful. They’re worse than Joe Morgan awful.

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 4:35 pm

is it me or does pelfrey have a startled rabbit look at the moment?

DavidDog May 3, 2008 at 4:38 pm

and why does he wear that stupid mouthpiece???

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Medical issue…TMJ. Been a Mets fan long?

DavidDog May 3, 2008 at 4:48 pm

me? about 18 years.
i hear he grinds his teeth… you call that a medical issue? i call it childish anxiety that don’t belong in the majors… i am aware of the alleged reasons, just think they’re stupid and the mouthpiece makes him look stupid

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 4:51 pm

LOL! There’s some angry guy that calls WFAN after EVERY Pelfrey start. He’ll call today… He even calls when Pelf wins, and he’s still angry. I think his name is Howie from Brooklyn. He sounds like he’s 100 years old, and he always says the same three things:

1. Why is Mike Pelfrey allowed to wear that mouthpiece? I have a feeling that something he’s doing to it is effecting his pitches.

2. This Heilman really seems to be struggling. Why don’t they let him start one of these next few games so he can get some of his confidence back

3. You know, this Randolph. Why does he always sit there with such a sour look on his face? Why doesn’t he learn how to relax and enjoy the position he’s in?

None of these things are really that outlandish for a caller to say, but it’s different when you hear it from him. He sounds like he’s ready to either cry or collapse on the floor and pass on. This just made me think of him.

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 5:22 pm

DavidDog,

Well, you haven’t been paying much attention in the last three-four years or so of those 18. Pelf has TMJ. Not “teeth-grinding”. It is a jaw disease/disorder that can be excurciatingly painful….as has been discussed ad infinitum by Mets broadcatsers, beat writers, bloggers, etc ever since Pelf has been connected with the Mets.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:39 pm

He sucks.

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Game is finally on Tvants….enjoy. Its about 6 pitches behind

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm

How many pitches does Webb throw this inning? 4?

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 4:40 pm

i think they must realise that the only way to win today is to knock out webb

CaveManJoe May 3, 2008 at 4:39 pm

lol – I love this guy yelling in the background – “i havent seen you since May 2004″

stickguy May 3, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Delgado really does need to go. Generally worthless at bat, and a liability in the filed. Other than a fat contract, what exactly does he bring to the table?

i would hae no plablem calling up Carp or evans if it meant Deldono was gone!

And ma Pelfrey, 0-2 on the 8 hole hitter, strike him out! ALthough I guess a gound ball to 1B isn’t that bad.

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

he has started doing better at the plate now.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

They need a better option for first than Delgado. Someone like Hatterburg (or I’d love Millar).

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 4:47 pm

I think he has probably till the all-star break. easier to eat 5/6m part of the contract in a trade.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Hatteberg or Millar???? You must be joking. I hope you’re not one of the guys who rants on Omar.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:55 pm

Right, because Delgado is great

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 5:02 pm

A one-eyed, three legged, rabid bassett hound would be an improvement over Delgado…nevermind Millar or Hatteberg

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 5:05 pm

I’m not looking for offense from first anymore, that ship has sailed, I just want a competent defender.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 5:11 pm

We could have kept Mientkiewicz for that.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

LOL!

Where were you on May 18, 2004 when Randy Johnson pitched a perfect game?

I was somewhere not giving a ****

Well, it was against the Braves, but I know I still don’t care.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 4:43 pm

He was starting on my fantasy team that game

Crazy Nyce Dave May 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

“In danger of walking a stolen base.”

I like that.

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Mark Grace just referred to Justin Upton as a “Manchild…”

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 4:57 pm

he resembles a young right handed version of bonds.

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 5:12 pm

with a much smaller hat size…

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 5:25 pm

LOL

But it has time to grow

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Wow that looked like a strike

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 5:11 pm

how was that not a strike?

Hernandez_1B May 3, 2008 at 5:16 pm

does anyone else think that casanova should have called a fastball inside instead of the pitch outside that drew hit to left ? Schneider would have called the inside fastball

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 5:33 pm

I think Casanova moves his glove too much when he catches the ball. doesn’t frame it so the umpire thinks its a ball. it looks as if casanova doesn’t have a great sense of the strike zone.

ne case this is a bit of a sacrificial game.

CitizenSnips May 3, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Are these announcers the same as the ones from mlb.tv last night? I hope a small prop plane crashes into their booth.

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 5:29 pm

i think casanova calls a bad game.

Stems May 3, 2008 at 5:29 pm

pelfrey and his walks…

am i the only one who thinks hell never make it in the big leagues?? how many years do we need to wait?

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 5:42 pm

We should wait until Schneider is behind the plate again and see what happens.

stone11375 May 3, 2008 at 10:48 pm

hes young, he needs his catcher, and right now his catcher is schnider

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Sosa’s warming up, I guess we’re crying Uncle.

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Is anyone wondering when its time to send Pelf down to work on things and bring up Armas jr?

mrose May 3, 2008 at 5:35 pm

i for one, think we need to see how he looks w/ schneider back behind the plate…he hasn’t had a game w/ schneider since his first 2…

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 5:38 pm

I’ll give you that one…I for one think cassanova is a dog sh*t game caller and nearly the leader that BS is.

Koko May 3, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Anyone see Peterson sweating a little bit. :D

Anyway, it is time to send Pelfry back to the minors for a bit. Call up Vargas – he can’t be any worse and he’ll probably get through 6 innings – unlike Pelfry.

I hate the Mets inefficient pitchers. It eventually leads to the overuse of the bullpen and then the bullpen struggling – like last September.

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Please no on vargas. Isnt he on the DL?

Gina May 3, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Yeah he is he had hip surgery.

Koko May 3, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Are you thinking Justin Vargas? Yes he is on the DL.

I’m thinking Claudio Vargas. The guy they signed to a minor league deal, use to pitch for the Brewers. This is the reason they signed him. In case Pelfry struggled or Pedro got hurt.

Koko May 3, 2008 at 5:44 pm

*jason vargas

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Claudio isnt ready yet. A couple more starts and he would be. I would rather have someone that throws more strikes…Vargas is a 5 2/3 guy

Koko May 3, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Well it seems like 5 2/3 is like most of our starters except Johan, so it won’t be any different – and better then Pelfry and maybe Ollie on some nights.

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 5:39 pm

BTW Pelf and Ollie, you have a pitching IQ of 4

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 5:40 pm

There’s always tomorrow….the sort of game we got Santana for.

Sasseroni May 3, 2008 at 5:47 pm

Can’t say too much could have been expected today with Webb going against Pelfrey. That guy makes opposing hitters look like tee-ballers.

I wish the team would wake up and realize that Endy is just about useless these days. Yeah, he’s got a good glove, but he does nothing else. He doesn’t even have speed on the bases anymore, it seems. Be nice to have someone who could slug a bit off the bench (I know, easier said than done).

therealsince86 May 3, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Jason Botts

Don Logan May 3, 2008 at 5:48 pm

And Figueroa got bumped in the rotation in favor of Pelfrey because…..?

And what was even more laughable was when earlier in the week Cohen said Pelfrey has been “terrific.”

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Here comes Carlos “K” Delgado

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 5:52 pm

care to take that back?

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 5:52 pm

I am so glad to be eating my words right now… HUGE!

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 5:53 pm

man that felt good.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Delgado should take a curtain call

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 5:55 pm

horrible call, Webb gets the plate and a half i guess

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 5:55 pm

six inches off the plate

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Delgado with a clutch bomb? Repent now!!!! The apocalypse is upon us!

Don Logan May 3, 2008 at 5:55 pm

i hate umps that give different pitchers w/in a game different strike zones. Pelfrey wouldn’t have gotten that pitch.

CitizenSnips May 3, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Kinda like Angel “I love the Braves” Hernandez?

Runshouse May 3, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Why is everyohne all over Pelfrey, he is a 5th starter and pitching against he best offense in the NL currently.

therealsince86 May 3, 2008 at 5:57 pm

For us he is a 4th starter but point taken.

Koko May 3, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Well the point is that he is supposed to be our best pitching prospect – by far. Where he falls in the rotation doesn’t really matter.

He’s had some time. I’ve defended him in the past, but his inefficiencies are just bad and getting to me.

Gina May 3, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Pretty much. He’s not just our fourth/fifth starter. He was the 9th overall pick 3 years ago and supposed to be a future “ace”. That’s why people are so hard on him. Although more blame should probably fall on our scouting and development than on him.

therealsince86 May 3, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Not bad for a guy that everyone says is done. To hit a HR against the best pitcher in the NL.

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 6:01 pm

not all of us. read my comments above.

a semi-fit alou and a 75% delgado makes the line up very dangerous.

robmenna May 3, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Oh no not Sosa

Aquadealer May 3, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Why is Sosa in this game after Delgados HR?

therealsince86 May 3, 2008 at 6:00 pm

As opposed to …….

Aquadealer May 3, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Anyone but Sosa….Smith, Feliciano, hell even Shoe or Heilman.

therealsince86 May 3, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Smith pitched almost 2 innings last night. Heilman, you know someone would have said something about that. And the situation did not call for a LHP.

Koko May 3, 2008 at 6:05 pm

They won’t use Smith – went 1.2 last night and threw a lot of pitches.

Sosa was already warmed up – no one else was close.

Sosa needs to get out of the 6th and then you’ll see the ‘regular’ bullpen.

There is no reason not to use Sosa. He’s on the roster.

almar1965 May 3, 2008 at 5:59 pm

…and here comes the Mets middle relief to give the D’Backs a boost.

chicagometfan May 3, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Sosa is the worst choice. Muniz should take his place on the roster

almar1965 May 3, 2008 at 6:00 pm

This is the key inning to the game in a nutshell. It is imperative to hold the D’backs and not give them the 3 runs back.

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Way to fight back after being squeezed Sosa

almar1965 May 3, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Strikeout. Good pitch by Sosa.

Just keep it going…

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Oy vey this homeplate ump is driving me crazy

MetsUKfan May 3, 2008 at 6:05 pm

cassanova doesn’t frame properly.

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 6:14 pm

agreed.

almar1965 May 3, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Two outs!

robmenna May 3, 2008 at 6:06 pm

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:06 pm

um, wow?!?

Wright88 May 3, 2008 at 6:06 pm

How many times has Delgado saved Wright?

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:07 pm

admittingly, that was a tough play, bare handed it, had to gun it to have any chance, and delgado pulled something off there that I can’t even explain, just wow.

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 6:06 pm

Delgado made up for that error earlier with that play

not to mention the 3 run homer

therealsince86 May 3, 2008 at 6:07 pm

And that is why, as bad as Delgado is, you can’t just put someone at 1B. Unless you want Wright to have 48 errors on the season.

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:09 pm

you know who probably be a GREAT first baseman though? David Wright

khmustache May 3, 2008 at 6:13 pm

that’s an idea…

Jefferies 9 May 3, 2008 at 6:09 pm

These announcers are terrible ….

I would rather watch this with the MUTE turned on …

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 6:10 pm

You should’ve heard the D-bags feed last night. I DID mute it.

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Their commentary was such garbage

Jefferies 9 May 3, 2008 at 6:14 pm

I rather hear a two hour soliloquy on Tootsie Pops

CitizenSnips May 3, 2008 at 6:31 pm

They constantly ragged on the Mets too. I mean it’s good that your team is in first but don’t antagonize the other team.

almar1965 May 3, 2008 at 6:12 pm

I think as fans we would love to see a two out rally by this team late in the game…

Constnza81V2.0 May 3, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Well at the very least, this team is showing fight and moxie today. They could have easily went to sleep once Webb was cruising, so kudos.

almar1965 May 3, 2008 at 6:16 pm

True.

But this game is winnable. No moral victories for me, thank you.

: )

almar1965 May 3, 2008 at 6:15 pm

What the @#$^%^&* did Reyes swing at?

ugh.

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 6:21 pm

qualls has nasty stuff.

MeesesGlokmah May 3, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Heilman?!? Randolph is trying to give this game to the D-Backs! Let’s just hope Heilman gets lucky.

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:23 pm

who else is going to go in there, down 1, in the 7th? Either way, we need Heilman to get right, we know what he’s capable of when he’s going good. Now, walking guys is not good, but this at bat against Reynolds was quite good. He had no clue what was coming.

robmenna May 3, 2008 at 6:23 pm

How awful is Mark Reynolds

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Hey, at least Heilman gets the same fan reaction everywhere now.

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:27 pm

ugh, this is not good

Nightlife May 3, 2008 at 6:27 pm

What in the hell Heilman?

howellmetsfan May 3, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Aaron Suckman….finding new ways to be horrible each and every appearance

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 6:29 pm

I still think he’ll get out of this.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Well I had to be right sooner or later :)

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

wow

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

there ya go, aaron!!

mrose May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

wow
heilman, come back to normal soon…but thanks for getting through the inning

AlouIsNasty May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

way to fight back!

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

ha i imagine that if heilman was at home, and after hitting his second batter, the crowd would have booed and he would have imploded. but i could be wrong.

khmustache May 3, 2008 at 6:32 pm

we should send him a postcard with 50,000 boos on it

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 6:41 pm

ahha he made it out of the inning :) be happy

I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea, Yeah Pepto Bismol!

MeesesGlokmah May 3, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Thank God!

khmustache May 3, 2008 at 6:31 pm

so that was easy!

gipper91375 May 3, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Heilman would drive a Mormon to drink.

skylog May 3, 2008 at 6:31 pm

that was the most ridiculous thing i have never seen.

Nightlife May 3, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Phew!

I was about to say we need to send Heilman to glue factory like they just did to that horse in the Kentucky Derby.

skylog May 3, 2008 at 6:31 pm

they have to go get it this inning.

Jay May 3, 2008 at 6:36 pm

I love how those two women standing behind the plate aren’t even watching the game….

khmustache May 3, 2008 at 6:37 pm

arizona dude…

skylog May 3, 2008 at 6:41 pm

i was hoping for a bit more that half inning

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:44 pm

pena looked pretty good, but yeah, it would have been nice

skylog May 3, 2008 at 6:45 pm

just have to hold them and hope for some magic in the ninth

mrose May 3, 2008 at 6:45 pm

is Byrnes up EVERY inning? i feel like I hear his on deck music every time the mets pitch!

blains2000 May 3, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Geez. How come instead of Sanchezes quality rubbing off on the rest of the guys in the bullpen their suckitude rubs off on him? Ugh!

blains2000 May 3, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Aaaaaah – everybody clap your hands is everywhere!

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 6:49 pm

They get the extended version there. Sometimes we don’t realize how lucky we are.

skylog May 3, 2008 at 6:50 pm

well, so much for that

mrose May 3, 2008 at 6:50 pm

do the mets lead the universe in Grand slams given up by the bullpen?

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 6:51 pm

i actually saw that wild pitch coming.

blains2000 May 3, 2008 at 6:52 pm

So of course the day that Sosa AND Heilman both hold the other team Sanchez blows it. wtf?

mrose May 3, 2008 at 6:55 pm

oh well, everyone enjoy your Saturday nights…. Santana tomorrow

darkstar73 May 3, 2008 at 6:56 pm

man, Upton gets a hit off that pitch? this is just creul

ness589 May 3, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Brilliant use of the bullpen by Willie Randolph these past 2 games. Have your 3 best relievers pitch in a blowout and then bring in your 2 worst relievers when you’re only down 1 run. Using Sanchez on consecutive days when he wasn’t needed in one game is a brilliant move as well.

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 7:00 pm

securing a win, and after an off day isnt overusing your bullpen. it was the first game of a road trip. thats kinda important.

mrose May 3, 2008 at 7:15 pm

ok, lets hear how you would have used your bullpen..
hindsight is always 20/20 by the way
You are one of those people that will just ALWAYS hate willie…admit it..
I’m not saying hes perfect, but he didn’t really screw up that bad on the bullpen as you make it…he got 5 out of pelf, those 2 horrible relievers you speak of gave up no runs and Sanchez is bound to have a few bad outtings…

Show is show..

ness589 May 3, 2008 at 10:26 pm

How would I have used the pen? Easy. Use Sosa, Heilman, and Schoeneweis. You have a 5 run lead to work with. Those 3 are the worst of the lot, give them a spot to work with little pressure.

Today you use Smith, Feliciano, and Sanchez. Sanchez is still getting adjusted to pitching back to back days, why push him when you’re down and then let him out there to dry?

I didn’t like his bullpen usage last night. Today proved me right that it would came back to bite him.

Sorry, but the man is the dullest tool in the shed when it comes to using pitchers. IIRC, he’s used over 4 pitches in 17 games.

blains2000 May 3, 2008 at 6:59 pm

You know you can talk about Reyes and Beltran and defense and Perez and Pelfrey but the bullpen is the single biggest thing holding this team back. They, all of them at one time or another, have just been brutal for the last year or so.

Everything about this team could be exactly the same but if the bullpen did their job they would have 5 more wins this year easy.

You wonder why this team plays listless? There is nothing that rips the heart out of the team more that a bad bullpen.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 7:01 pm

I think it’s good that most of the commercials now have bacon tied into them somehow. Five or six servings of bacon a day is never a bad idea! We need to be reminded of that sometimes.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Well there’s no long a game to talk about…

hyperion4 May 3, 2008 at 7:23 pm

I for one appreciate the comment. It beats hearing about how stupidly Willie uses the bullpen, etc.

WrightsRight May 3, 2008 at 7:02 pm

why is that twerps like Augie Fing Ojeda always kill us?

blains2000 May 3, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Are you F-ING kidding me? SIX rbi? We can’t even get our $15 million players to have 6 rbi ina week! And Scho wonders hy he gets booed.

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 7:04 pm

eh it happens. he can go home knowing he had the best day of his professional career.

on another note, i dont care what anyone says, your number three hitter should never bunt. it means you have the wrong person batting third.

blains2000 May 3, 2008 at 7:06 pm

And when then send Owings up to pinch hit why don’t other teams just drill him?

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 7:11 pm

cause that isnt nice.

khmustache May 3, 2008 at 7:12 pm

i wonder that myself…20 years ago he’d be put on his a**

ghobot May 3, 2008 at 7:14 pm

wowow, the two wins that the dbacks have against the mets at home in the last 16 have been against mike pelfrey! that says alot.

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 9:44 pm

alot? What does that say? That the DBacks suck. I’m not even sure that is true.

One of those wins was the Alay Soler two-hitter. You want him back?

gipper91375 May 4, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Another was a Jorge Sosa as starter gem I was there. It’s just a freaky building vis a vis the Mets.

gipper91375 May 4, 2008 at 2:45 pm

*Insert a period “.” between “gem” and “I”

MeesesGlokmah May 3, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Don’t worry. I’m confident we will win tomorrow with Santana. I have faith in him/them.

AlreadyMissShea May 3, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Me too, but he’s gonna have to keep the ball in the park. I’m not worried though. Take 2 out of 3 and on to LA.

metsfan119 May 3, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Oh well, Pelfrey vs. Webb, what do you think was going to happen? Hopefully Santana pitches like an ace tomorrow.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 9:03 pm

When Pedro comes back, Pelfrey’s outta here. Keep Figueroa in the rotation and either demote Pelfrey or put him in the bullpen where he belongs. Maybe there he will learn to pitch – inning at a time.

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Glider, you know I respect your opinion, but why kill Pelfrey? He had two great starts and 3 Meh starts. He always give you at least 5 innings. And this is his second year (partly) in the majors.

Sanchez gave up 5 runs, and got only one out.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Hey Ralph. I’m just so frustrated with him. Last year 0-7. During the off-season I really wanted to see the Mets move Heilman into the rotation and Pelfrey into the bullpen. To me, that made sense since Heilman has two, maybe three pitches and Pelfrey, as I’ve said ad nauseum, really only has one. (Of course, this was never going to happen – so, once again, I set myself up for disappointment and frustration! ha.)

What really ticks me off about Pelfrey is his constant nibbling and his pussiness – i.e. failure to just go after hitters. He has no confidence in his ability to simply challenge hitters.

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 9:41 pm

I share your frustration, bro. And you are absolutely correct about him not using his fastball. I was begging him to throw it by Ojeda at 0-2 in the third inning, yet he kept farting around with his curve. I partly blame Casanova for seemingly always calling for pitches outside.

Pelfrey does have better stuff than he showed today. But at the same time, he was battling, like Maine did last nite. He’s shown some good signs this year, and has what we want in a 5-starter right now.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 9:45 pm

Oh yeah, did I mention that that mouth piece also gets on my nerves (ha).

Well, when Pedro comes back, Willie’s gonna have to make a decision about who stays and who goes in the rotation. For me, I’d keep Figueroa in and put Pelfrey in the bullpen where, hopefully, he can develop some confidence and maybe and second pitch.

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Agreed, looks like Pedro is going to be back no earlier than June, so we should get a good feel for who is stronger, Figgy or Mouthpiece. Fight thru the frustration, Glider. Be like Maine.

HITorDIE25 May 3, 2008 at 9:13 pm

BELTRAN WAKE UP! Delgado is hitting better then you!

Philnym31 May 3, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Julio Franco retired

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Say it ain’t so, Julio.

Can he collect Social Security now?

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Giant v. Phillies . . . Giants have just gone ahead in the top of the 10th. Who’s the Giants closer? I hope it’s still not Armando Benitez.

BTW, anybody here going to watch the DeLaHoya fight?

KinersKornerman May 3, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Benitez is now sucking for the Marlins. Giants closer is some guy named Brian Wilson. I think he used to close for the Beach Boys.

The Glider May 3, 2008 at 10:24 pm

. . . “wouldn’t it be nice.” lol.

wallybackman'sfire May 3, 2008 at 11:25 pm

I believe Armando was invited to Toronto’s spring training as non-roster invitee?

D-Day May 3, 2008 at 11:20 pm

well tough loss but im not worried. cant say im too shock when the top nl team rolls out there ace against one of our lower rotation guys who hasnt had hes best stuff for a while. some good fight in this team though considering we were still within a run late in the game. im feeling alot better with johan going tomorrow. lets get this series, LETS GO METS!

gometzies_18 May 3, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Yeah, I think If we can go in tomorrow and take care of business with Johan, which we should be able to, then you have to be happy with a series victory over the top team in the NL.

Webb is a Cy Young winner. Pelfrey is not. Enough Said.

Win the series tomorrow. Thats the name of the game in the regular season. Let’s go Johan…LET’S GO METS!!

Gina May 4, 2008 at 12:02 am

It’s not really enough said when you consider that our bullpen ultimately blew this game open, for them not us obviously. Unless our starters, other than Santana, start going deep into games this is going to be a reoccurring problem.

Grand_Single May 4, 2008 at 12:02 am

Alright, I want to hear and up or down vote on this.

5 games
27.1 IP
38 H
11 K (for someone supposed to be using his gas pitch)

earlier someone mentioned his diddling around with trying to bite the corners with his curve instead of going at hitters…enough.

can we reasonably unload pelf + heilman for a legit 4/5 starter and use our remaining crew for relief????

The Glider May 4, 2008 at 12:14 am

I actually had proposed trading Pelfrey and Heilman to the Pirates for Xavier Nady. Hopefully, Pedro comes back soon which will make Pelfrey expendable and we keep Figueroa, who’s been pitching decently, in the rotation.

Then there’s Armas and Vargas in the minors, pitching ok, and waiting for a chance. Let’s hope Petey fully recovers and it doesn’t come down to that.

Grand_Single May 4, 2008 at 12:17 am

My faith in Pedro as a dependable player ranks up there w/ el duque and moises……

besides we seem to flush with OFs anyway…..but I agree Nady seemed to do well in NY. (not bothered by the “NY Pressure”)

Ryan Synagogue May 4, 2008 at 12:19 am

Im reserving judgement on Pelfrey until Schneider gets back behind the plate. Honestly I feel that way about anyone not named Santana, Maine or Wagner right now on this pitching staff.

I expected a loss today anyway. And im glad Willie kept Church batting second. I just wish alou was out there, and rested tomorrow instead, since you’ll need more of Endy’s outfield speed with Johan pitching.
