Read: Pelfrey Sees Himself in Webb

by Brandon Eddy on May 5th, 2008 at 9:21 am

In the New York Times, Ben Shpigel wonders if Mike Pelfrey can come close to following the same career path as Brandon Webb, however, Saturday’s duel was indicative of the distance between them.

Shpigel writes:

“Webb, despite giving up a three-run homer in the sixth to Carlos Delgado, improved to 7-0 because he relied on his trusty sinker to record 12 groundouts over six innings. In Webb, Pelfrey sees a more — much more — advanced version of himself. More precisely, he sees what he aspires to become.”

…it is easier said from here, but my observation is that pelfrey needs to just trust his stuff and let it fly…for whatever reason, it looks like his preoccupied with being too perfect which equals too many walks…let if fly mike and pound the strike zone…

Meanwhile, at his ESPN.com blog, Buster Olney describes how WFAN broadcaster Howie Rose noted that Pelfrey worked extra hard to get moisture on his hand.

Note: Ryan Church is a Good Player

by Matthew Cerrone on May 5th, 2008 at 7:44 am

During yesterday’s win over the D’Backs, with the score tied in bottom of the eighth, Pedro Feliciano made a poor throw over first base, allowing D’Backs 2B Chris Burke to extend a routine bunt in to a potential triple.

However, Ryan Church hustled, picked up the ball – now rolling towards right field – and tossed a one-hop bullet to David Wright to leg Burke sliding in to the third for an out.

by the way, it was a acrobatic tag by wright, as well

Church, speaking to reporters after the game:

“The biggest thing was getting a grip on the ball…In that situation, the key is not to panic.  It started to tail a little bit, but David made a great play to get to it and make the tag…That guy could have been on third with nobody out.  Whatever helps, just chip in.  I didn’t get it done with the bat, just do it with defense.”

Church also made a running catch of a liner by Chris Young in the sixth to get Santana out of a bases-loaded jam in what would prove to be the Mets ace’s final inning of work.

Meanwhile, in a post to Brooklyn Met Fan, Adam apologizes to Omar Minaya for having criticized the acquisition of Church for Lastings Milledge, writing, “I’ve completely reversed my position on this trade and I hereby stand down.  You made the right call.  I thank God you did because I can’t imagine what kind of shape this team would be in without Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.”

as i said at the time, this was a deal that worked for both teams, and it was not about milledge’s shortcomings…in fact, the sense i got was that people connected to the Mets knew that milledge would eventually develop in to the type of player they’d regret having traded away…the thing is, given the pressure to win now, the Mets did not have time to wait for that day to comelet us not forget, too, that church is under 30 and under contract…

Health: Castro, Wise and Pedro

by Matthew Cerrone on May 5th, 2008 at 7:04 am

The Mets told reporters yesterday that C Ramon Castro and RHP Matt Wise could both be activated for next weekend’s series at home against the Reds.

castro has been a mystery…it seems like he’s ready to be back, then not…strong, then weak…playing, then limping off the field…like with alou, i’ll believe in castro’s return when i see it…until then, Oh Casanova…

the situation with wise is odd, because he’s been able to come back for a while now but hasn’t…i get the feeling his future has more to do with who he replaces at the major-league level, than it has to do with his health

As such, at Mets Today, Joe Janish runs through who should be demoted in place of Wise, such as Aaron Heilman who, according to Janish, still has options and can be demoted to the minor leaguers without having to be put on waivers.

Lastly, as the Daily News reported yesterday, Pedro Martinez has started throwing on a bullpen mound in St. Lucie.

based on what we know from the past, martinez will next need to throw in simulated games and then rehab games, meaning he should not be on the legit radar until the end of May, with a likely return in June some time
