preGame: Mets at Dodgers (Game One)
By Mike Nichols - May 5, 2008 8:53 pm

The Game:

The Mets (16-13) continue their west coast road trip with a three-games series versus the Dodgers (17-14) tonight at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, game at 10:10 pm EST.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

LHP Oliver Perez (2-2, 4.03 ERA) toes the rubber for the Mets. In his last start on April 30 versus the Pirates, Perez allowed a season high seven runs, two earned, on two hits and five walks while striking out two, earning a loss. Left-handed batters are hitting .083 (2-for-24) against Perez this season. Perez is 5-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 10 career starts versus the Dodgers.

RHP Chad Billingsley (1-4, 5.20 ERA) starts for the Dodgers. Billingsley earned a win in his last outing on April 30 versus the Marlins allowing one ru on three hits while walking four and striking out eight. Left-handed batters are hitting .300 against Billingsley this season. This is Billingsley’s first career start versus the Mets.

…i have no idea what to expect out of perez tonight…after looking erratic in his last two outings it’s possible ollie could go out and throw seven shutout innings, looking dominate doing so…i mean, thats how inconsistent he is from start to start…you never know what you’re gonna get with him…let’s hope it’s the “good” ollie tonight…

The Notes:

David Wright is batting .404 (21-for-52) with 1 HR and 13 RBI in his career at Dodger Stadium.

Ryan Church is 22-for-57 (.386) with 2 2B, 2 HR, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored on the road this season.

The Dodgers are 10-3 since April 21, batting .314 and averaging 7.23 runs per game.

Jeff Kent is batting .348 with 1 HR and 4 RBI in 23 career at-bats versus Perez.

I’m taking a polaroid of that lineup. I figure we won’t see it that often, but it’s perfect.

    • mr.gee21 says:

Well, 1-8 is perfect. We should wait and see which guy shows up in the 9-slot.

    • letz_go_metz says:

Brian Schneider catching? Would be interesting if that helped Ollie find his better self tonight! All we can do is cross our fingers but… I’m just saying

  2. The Glider says:

    EVERYBODY CLAP YOUR HANDS!

    Let Go Mets!

  3. jws366 says:

40K’s in 27.1 innings for Billingsly is scary to me… hes no joke..

  4. PacmanJones says:

And he has a 5.20 era = 8.0IP 0ER effort against the mets.

    • jws366 says:

      1. A slow start does not mean he is bad. Check the stats from his last game.

      2. Check his stats from last year.

      3. Anyone that K’s 40 in 27.1 IP has potential to be lights out on a given night.

  5. Koko says:

What’s up with the B-lineup Willie?

  6. Metdamage says:

On the SNY pregame they showed a graphic that David Wright is hitting .461 against the Dodgers in 23 games.

  7. stone11375 says:

“willie’s finally playing with a full deck”

    classic

  8. MainStMets says:

ive got billingsley in my fantasy league and i am torn abt whether or not i should start him, 4 other guys started tonight, era of .80 w 28 Ks…so its only likely to hurt me if i start Chad….but i kno if i sit him, he will pitch a gem w 12Ks..oh the trouble of starting pitchers vs your fave team

    • jws366 says:

As much as I hate to do it, I’m starting Chad Billingsly on my team. The fact that he was lights out his last start, we are 1-8 vs. righties, and vegas has the Dodgers as big favorites tonight makes me pretty confident that the mets will lose.

Yet I gotta say, LETS GO METS!

  9. MainStMets says:

i did it, started chad, here we go, hoping for a pitches duel lol

  10. CitizenSnips says:

We aren’t 3 minutes into the game and he brings up September.

    • jws366 says:

Who did? I missed it? (sometimes I zone into the game and can’t hear the commentary)

  11. mr.gee21 says:

Okay Ollie, don’t piss off Wagner tonight, that’s all I ask…

  12. Slippery Pete says:

    Steve Sanders.

  13. metsfan119 says:

An 0-2 homer to a guy who’s as big as my niece. Good start Ollie

  14. Don Logan says:

giving up homeruns on 0-2 pitches is unforgiveable.

  15. MainStMets says:

i feel like our pitchers give up a ton more HR then other staffs

  16. Dirtysanchez says:

    here we go again……………

  17. metsfan119 says:

At least he’s not walking people

  18. DavidDog says:

    ready for new orleans

  19. Dirtysanchez says:

    wow……………………….whadathrow

  20. Dirtysanchez says:

    ouch

  21. metsfan119 says:

I love Jeff Kent, I wish he decided to get good with the Mets.

  22. Dirtysanchez says:

talk about a target lol hope he was wearing a cup lol

  23. HITorDIE25 says:

is it just me or has perez’s velocity been down since all-star break of last year?

  24. DavidDog says:

ahaha maybe this will knowck back into form

  25. NY Cuban says:

Looks like we came to play tonight. I’m so glad Matt waited for the 2 wins in AZ for the Willie poll…maybe now he can get that positive feedback he’s been waiting for…

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Why not just drop the poll altogether at this point? Even Willie’s biggest supporters know that the polls will only be taken/posted when the Mets win a big series. If the polls were done fairly, I would have probably given him a six or seven, instead I gave him a one, because I took the disappearing one into account. You can’t just do a poll when things are going well and expect it to be balanced.

  26. metsfan119 says:

    No passed balls Schneider

  27. JefJarrett says:

Has anything been hit soft yet?

  28. CitizenSnips says:

Jesus Perez has gotten beaten up (literally) this year.

    • CitizenSnips says:

And “Jumping on him for a quick duece” was one of the funniest unintentional commentaries I’ve heard in some time.

  29. metsfan119 says:

Look on the bright side, at least this the last year of Perez’s contract rather than the first.

  30. Dirtysanchez says:

so…..lol new poll how many innings will OP go

  31. gometzies_18 says:

You know Wagner is in Ollie’s head tonight

  32. stickguy says:

    looks like bad Ollie tonight.

At this point, I don’t care how he is doing, he needs to stay out there and take one for the team. He can give up 12 runs and still needs to suck it up and mope out there and pitch.

I’m almost starting to think it would be OK for the Stankees to wildly overpay for this guy!

  33. metsfan119 says:

Can we have a Rick Peterson confidence poll?

  34. gipper91375 says:

What a pleasure to hear Scully after so many unprofessional, homer, hackish morons in booths for the Nats, Fish, D-Bags, etc. Amazing he still does it well at his age…even more remarkable he is being simulcast on radio….so he really paints the word-picture” a la Bob Murphy and the other old time greats.

    • gometzies_18 says:

I was thinking the exact thing - I wish I could get the SNY broadcast on MLB.TV for all the games, but I was excited to hear Scully do a game. Amazing to think how long hes been the cream of the crop.

  35. stickguy says:

This is starting to smell like one of those games that gets out of hand early. May be getting to bed early after all tonight!

Offense better show some life early.

  36. metsfan119 says:

It’s a catch 22 with this guy, he either sucks and the Mets will want no part of him this off-season or he pitches great and the Mets won’t overpay.

  37. marvelousmarv says:

Look at the positive, atleast he didn’t walk anyone to help them along. I’d rather see the HRs than him walking anymore people.

  38. metsfan119 says:

Happy for the hit, but still, can we take some pitches from this guy?

  39. Met_Zombie says:

fine we are down 2-0 and it happens all the time. the big thing that has to happen now is ollie needs to bounce back.

    • metsfan119 says:

Mets have started to gain some momentum, facing a pitcher who has struggled but has great stuff, sprinkle in a little Oliver Perez, I think we know where this game is going…

  40. Dirtysanchez says:

30 game hitting streak………that would be nice right about now

  41. Dirtysanchez says:

    great hit delgado

  42. MainStMets says:

    delgado is alive lol

  43. metsfan119 says:

DAMN I wanted Beltran to score, wow, Delgado has woken up lately

  44. metsfan119 says:

Bring back Cookie Rojas, this game should be 2-1

  45. metsfan119 says:

Sh&^ of course they blow the opportunity

    • CLYONS says:

terrible move by sandy alomar..bottom of the order coming up you have to take the chance and send beltran this early in the game

  46. Dirtysanchez says:

    damn………..good pitch

  47. AlreadyMissShea says:

I have a feeling this game will end somewhere around 2am. This has 2am written all over it.

  48. jws366 says:

If Castillo gets out this will be the most typical mets inning ever.

  49. WrightsRight says:

    should’ve sent beltran…

  50. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Didn’t know Vin Skully does solo. Thought he had an analyst with him.

    • gipper91375 says:

I think I have seen him do it both ways, but more often solo. It is a lot of talking, but he is being simulcast on radio and is still pretty sharp for a guy that will be 81 this fall.

His call of the Mookie/Buckner play in Game 6 is my ringtone.

  51. Don Logan says:

This is why Schneider cannot be a longterm option hitting 7th. A .235 hitter last year hitting 7th doesn’t bode well for this team. I still think the lineup is better balanced with Castillo 2nd, Church somewhere in the middle and Delgado 7th.

    • dykstraw says:

      except, castillo is terrible

      • Don Logan says:

Yea career .300 hitters are typically awful.

        • metsfan119 says:

He’s not the same player. Too many surgeries.

        • Metdamage says:

We know Castillo is not the same player based on what evidence? Last season he hit .300. So we’re using 29 games to decide that a player is no longer what he used to be?

        • dykstraw says:

first of all: i am not impressed with a totally hollow .300 hitter with no isolated power whatsoever.

also: every at bat is the same with this guy. no aggression, constantly looking for a walk (which is normally good, but what pitcher would walk this guy), and then a weak ground ball. what about castillo strikes any of you as a useful hitter?

    • CLYONS says:

      your retarded

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

        LOL!

“your retarded” is one of the most unintentionally funny things I’ve seen posted here! :)

      • Don Logan says:

haha proper english would be ‘you’re retarded.” clearly, you proved who the retard is.

  52. Dirtysanchez says:

    wtf was that…………..

  53. WrightsRight says:

    typical….

  54. metsfan119 says:

    Great job Alomar….dumbass

    • JefJarrett says:

Ya, I would have sent him there from third.

Although, you need Schneider to at least make contact there……

but on the other hand…..Billingsley is nasty and K’s over 1/inning so I suppose the result was one that could be expected.

  55. metsfan119 says:

The Mets are good enough to have a timid 3rd base coach

  56. njmatt says:

I used to love watching Castillo play BEFORE he came to the Mets, what happened to this guy? He looks completely incapable of hitting the ball out of the infield. Amazing

  57. stickguy says:

Ladies and Gents, your 2007 Mets offense!

  58. Stems says:

that was a friggin joke… nice going Mets…

    alomar needs his vision checked…

castillo needs to be benched for that feeble slap at the ball.

  59. huge_mets_fan11 says:

WTF, of course we can’t score with 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, and then I see Phils getting crushing the D’ Backs 5-1.

    • JefJarrett says:

Ok, that was frustrating……but it is 2-0 in the bottom of the 2nd…….

oooooo and listen to Andrw Jones get boo’d…..who let these Mets fans in there w/ dodger hats on :-)

    • blains2000 says:

If the Mets were facing Scherzer in his first ever start he would pitch 7 shutout innings.

  60. blains2000 says:

I’m really learning to dislike Castillo. Are we supposed to think that he was able to slap all those weak grounders through the hole on the fast turf?

I swear I could hit a ball harder than him with a wiffle ball bat.

  61. Gilch says:

HITorDIE25 …why would perez not be back next year?
so your assuming based on these few starts hes going to continue to pitch this bad all year long?
even if he goes 10-10 with and ERA in the mid 4’s , those numbers yield u 10mill per yr on the open market …
the mets have a better shot at resigning Ollie if he has an average year as opposed to a another very good yr.

    • HITorDIE25 says:

Your assuming me wrong. I think that with boras being his agent he is going to ask for 5 year or something close to that. Also the fact that he is a mental midget doesnt help…This team doesnt need inconsistency…Yeah I think he is a good pitcher, but we need someone that can get us deep in games not strike out 8 and only get us to the 5th. I for one dont want him back, but thats just me.

  62. jws366 says:

I don’t know about you guys, but Castillo’s swing makes me want to vomit on myself. It’s still a tough call whether or not Castillo should bat second, but there is something tell me that it might not be the worst thing to have him taking a lot of pitches in the 2-hole so that reyes can steal.

On the flip-side, reyes is going to get out 7 times out of 10 and I don’t know if I want Luis Castillo up with 1 out, most likely going to make it 2 outs going into David Wright’s AB. The matter really depends on whether or not you believe Castillo still has it in him to bat .300 and have a .380 OBP for a full season…

    • JefJarrett says:

Well, he is a career .300 hitter………so yes, I do have confidence that he will do that.

Castillo is a slap hitter….so when he doesn’t succeed he is gonna look weak/awful/whatever in the process.

      • AlreadyMissShea says:

I see over and over again mention that he is a career .300 hitter. That is true, but he doesn’t even look like the same guy anymore. There comes a time where career .300 hitters don’t hit .300 anymore. It’s not hard to believe that this might be the year. He’s beat up by his own admission, looks older than his age, and may actually be older than the age given. I’m not gonna rip on the guy. I’d rather see him batting 8th than plenty of other players in the game today. He’s certainly not an automatic out, but he’s going to have to be judged on this year, not his career. We’ll see what happens.

      • gipper91375 says:

Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

        • NY Cuban says:

          It is to Willie…

        • Metdamage says:

Johan Santana was traded to Mets because of his past performance.

Santana was given 137 million based on past performance.

Teams are projected to win or lose divisions based on past performances.

There are fans who don’t believe in past performance so I thank God you are not my teams GM because apparently whatever player has done for his career means nothing.

        • gipper91375 says:

Dude, it was a j-o-k-e. I was quoting the line every brokerage house has to use in TV and other advertising for their services, mutual funds etc. Do yourself a favor and go rent yourself a sense of humor.

That said, it is a truism. Yes, Castillo is a career.300-ish hitter with good OPB. That doesn’t necessarily mean he will continue that way after double knee surgery, playing home games on naturakl grass, as he ages, etc.

And, what in my statement indicates that what a player does in his career “means nothing”? MY quote, which is apt, says past performance isn’t necessarily indicative of future performance. That is certainly true. It is also certianly true that, in baseball, career numbers are often good predcitors of future performance. Can you wrap your, I fear somewhat small, head around the notion that both statements are true?

  63. Dirtysanchez says:

    damn jones getting booed…………..

  64. CLYONS says:

i think its safe to say andrew jones is a former steroid user…54 HOMERUNS 3 years ago!!!!!…is that a jokeeeeee

  65. Gilch says:

but they need a good year from him to win

  66. DavidDog says:

anyone notice that the rare times delgado actually gets a big hit they seem to go for naught? and not just this year

  67. Ludacrispat says:

This is so ridiculous. You have a guy in Billingsley who strikes out over 11 per 9 innings and Schneider on deck, and you stop Beltran? Absolutely awful decision there, especially with Kent’s weak arm and Kemp’s bobble in right.

And this is pathetic from Perez. What happened to the guy from last year?

The Phillies keep winning, and we need to keep our ground. I know it may seem over-dramatic, but I thought this was going to be a good series from the Mets coming off of the D’Backs series.

    • metsfan119 says:

As of right now, the Phillies are simply better than the Mets.

      • zen says:

did you figure that out from the mets 4-2 record against them?

2-0 early in the game is the end of the world!

        let’s go mets!

    • CLYONS says:

will you relax its 2-0 in the third inning of the first game of the series…i cant stand some mets fans

  68. metsfan119 says:

Is it just me, or would Andruw Jones fit perfectly into the Mets lineup? He even has the past success aspect for Willie to stubbornly bat him in the middle of the order.

  69. Gilch says:

    lol
not even through 2 innings … you guys crack me up

    • Stems says:

you’re right.. there’s plenty of time for the mets to blow it later on in the game… the bullpen hasn’t pitched yet! =)

  70. crclark79 says:

my god, reading these comments you’d think it was 10-0. Step away from the ledge.

  71. AlouIsNasty says:

If Perez has a mediocre season, I say we lock him up for another 5 years and get a new pitching coach…

  72. backinbusiness says:

Those ridiculous Fish, D-Backs, et al announcers should be tied down and forced to listen to Scully on a loop. He is just so good. This is the first time I’ve been happy to have mlb.tv over SNY this year, that’s for sure.

Nice work for OP! 21 strikes/34 pitches.

    • AlouIsNasty says:

I agree. Scully is the only announcer I like more than the Cohen/Darling/Hernandez combo. This guy can paint a picture with words and always sounds like he is telling a bedtime story. Truly the best in the business, total professional.

  73. stickguy says:

Scully just had some interesting numbers to go along with his 7 in 17 graphic (you remember the collapse, right? Thought you might have forgotten!)

Anyway, on the Mets last homestand and roadtrip, they hit .303 and .299. Great, huh?

But, the ERAs were ~6.1 and 6.8!

I knew the pitching was bad, but man, that is putrid.

    • backinbusiness says:

and that’s the ERA’s…don’t forget the 9 unearned runs in just one game of that homestand!

    • therealsince86 says:

I mentioned something similar to that earlier. Everyone was blaming Delgado for slumping, Wright, Beltran and whoever they could find. The only ones slumping were Reyes and uh the entire pitching staff.

  74. Dirtysanchez says:

“and theres a rabbit loose” lol

  75. metsfan119 says:

Take some pitches, this guy is wild

  76. AlouIsNasty says:

Reyes Walked, Scully: “And there’s a rabbit loose now… Reyes to first.”

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

I wonder if he said “There’s a Rabbi loose” when David Newhan got on base.

Oh wait, David Newhan didn’t get on base.

  77. Dirtysanchez says:

    there you go. kmon church!

  78. metsfan119 says:

What the hell? That throw was on the wrong side of the bag and Reyes STILL almost got caught

  79. DavidDog says:

“he was living in the suburbs, to say the least ….. in a rickety bungalow among the banana groves, and where the geese outnumbered the cars” Scully, about Reye’ youth…classic!

  80. Dirtysanchez says:

    see contact…..
    cmon wright

  81. backinbusiness says:

somewhere on SNY, gary just said “productive out.” yeah?

  82. metsfan119 says:

I’d say let’s try to get this guy to pitch and get out of the game, but it seems every team the Mets play has an incredible bullpen

  83. Dirtysanchez says:

Derek Jeter vs David Wright for popularity

LOL THE WRIGHT FLIGHT!!!! LOVE IT

  84. Dirtysanchez says:

    DAMN

  85. WrightsRight says:

  88. njmatt says:

Uh oh, hopefully Wright doesn’t make a habit of that. Since Beltran is offering no protection, Wright gets pitched around in that spot every time…but he’s usually just been taking the walk. He REALLY expanded his zone there trying to pick up an RBI, hopefully he doesn’t make a habit of it.

  89. DavidDog says:

best thing ive ever seen delgado make at 1st

  90. backinbusiness says:

Well, Wagner can’t call OP complacent today.

  91. backinbusiness says:

42 pitches through 3, keep it up OP!

  92. Dirtysanchez says:

he seems to be getting into a groove here…lets check back with op around the 5th..

  93. AlouIsNasty says:

“Room service Fly out* that is awesome.

Speaking of Vin Scully. Couldn’t you picture him being a badass dude kinda like Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore?

  94. metsfan119 says:

Come on Mets, take pitches, this guy usually never gets out of the fifth

    • Dirtysanchez says:

he looks like he is making a case to get over that hump today

    • I_Need_More_Cowbell_Please says:

U know the worst pitchers in the majors will become an ace when they face the Mets. Nice bounce back for OP though.

  95. backinbusiness says:

When Miller says belTRAN, it makes me cringe.
When Scully says Moiseees, it makes me smile.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Miller: Here we are at DODGERS Stadium, Jon Miller, Joe Morgan. You know Joe, when I say Carlos BelTRAN, it makes people cringe. But I understand that when our friend Vin Scully says Moiseees Alou, well THAT makes people smile!

Morgan: Well Jon, a lot of people remember the Big Red Machine. You mentioned a lot of good players there, and we can’t forget about Paul Casanova, but he wasn’t around back then. You had your baseball, and then you had the Big Red Machine.

Miller: BelTRAN NOW HITS THE BALL A MILE! IT COULD GO! IT’S GOT THE DISTANCE! AND IT’S…. CAUGHT… just behind the pitcher’s mound. From here it looked like BelTRAN gave that ball a ride! But with the wind blowing in, it just wasn’t enough.

Morgan: The wind used to blow in down in Cincinnati too, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Big Red Machine…

  96. metsfan119 says:

Are we making it easy enough for you Chad? Do you want a hot towel with those dribblers?

  97. Dirtysanchez says:

    welp hes getting on base…..

  98. zen says:

only a walk for delgado. typical mets. never coming up big with an extra-base hit.

    • jws366 says:

That wouldn’t be a big extra base hit. There are 2 outs and were no men on. THIS is a big spot with castillo…

      • zen says:

yeah. getting an extra-base hit with two outs isn’t a big hit. typical mets getting 2 on with with the #8 hitter coming up.

        i can’t stand it anymore.

      • Metdamage says:

Was Delgado supposed to hit the balls out of the park?
I don’t get the “only a walk for Delgado” comment because a HR would make it 2-1. The Mets would still be LOSING!!!!

  99. metsfan119 says:

damn…if there was only a snowballs chance in hell Castillo could drive in a run here…

  100. Dirtysanchez says:

    lmao……….this is great…………..
and the batter now is going to be luis castillo………
lets all guess what will happen here……….

  101. kendychavez says:

two on two out for castillo. i feel great about this.

  102. metsfan119 says:

    Can we bat Castillo 10th?

  103. kendychavez says:

i mean even if he gets a hit, it won’t go far enough for delgado to score

  104. metsfan119 says:

You’re awesome Castillo, four more years of the magic

    • therealsince86 says:

It’s not his job to be an RBI guy. Castillo infront of the pitcher is asking for that to happen.

      • metsfan119 says:

Or an on base guy apparently

        • therealsince86 says:

right now you are right. But don’t you think he is in a different mind set with men on and the pitcher behind him? That is just not his game. He is not going to just try and get on with the pitcher coming up next and men on base. There are too many men left on base by the time the 8 spot comes up to have Castillo hitting there. Put him 9th or 2nd.

      • im sorry, when did the 8th spot become an rbi spot?

    • marvelousmarv says:

Don’t worry in his walk year he’ll hit 330 and steal 50 SBs. Ever wonder why Met Killer Burrel has started this hot.

      No coincidence…

  105. WrightsRight says:

castillo should just bat righty…at least he has a prayer of hitting it out of the infield.

  106. marvelousmarv says:

why not walk him w/ the pitcher next?

  107. njmatt says:

Ugh, why is Castillo playing SO horribly? He is not THIS bad, I don’t get it, but I have no confidence in him at all.

    • metsfan119 says:

He had surgery on both knees over the off-season, so any power that he might have gotten from his legs is pretty much gone.

  108. robmenna says:

It looks like he doesn’t want to hit the ball out of the infield

  109. Stems says:

    *expletive**expletive* CASTILLO *expletive**expletive**expletive*

  110. blains2000 says:

See, that just shows how retarded Melvin was to walk Castillo yesterday. If Willie did that he would have been crucified.

    Fire Bob Melvin!

  111. batsinthepelfrey says:

does castillo ever have an at bat where the word ’slap’ is not used prominently? its like in my softball league where the one girl who has to play gets up and you bring the OF all the way into the edge of the infield grass. except we don’t pay the girl $32M over 4 years.

    • CLYONS says:

i dont understand people..4 days ago everyone was crying for church to bat 2nd because castillo wasnt hitting there.. now everyone wants castillo back in the 2 hole cuz hes not hitting in the 8th spot..make up your minds

      • therealsince86 says:

Never wanted him in the 8 spot. Church is doing well enough that it would not matter if he was 2-6. Castillo, right now only has one thing going, move a runner on and get on base by taking a ton of pitches.

  112. zen says:

that castillo out is on willie. he should have become a doctor and did a better job on his surgeries.

  113. huge_mets_fan11 says:

I just love how people kill Willie for putting Church back into the 6th spot after they were 4-0 when he was batting second. Now when he puts him back there everyone wants Castillo back to the two hole.

  114. Dirtysanchez says:

    “big competitor with anger”…………….

  115. DavidDog says:

much rather have easley or marlon playing 2B

    • grotesmask says:

Totally, Easley even hits HRs from time to time. Just a better bat and competent at 2nd.

  116. jws366 says:

The scouting report must be so negative on castillo that they feel like its worth it to pitch to him there instead of walking him to pitch to OP who is miserably bad at hitting.

  117. grotesmask says:

Another excellent job of Mets getting men on base and leaving ‘em there.

Once again, we make mediocrities look like good pitchers. This guy doesn’t have it, and we’re freakin’ givin’ to him. Ugh!

Castillo seems like less of a threat than Harrelson. Sickening!!

  118. metsfan119 says:

Mets should seriously look into drafting a 2nd baseman out of college with one of their first rounders this year

  119. njmatt says:

The scary thing is, with the knees, I don’t even think Castillo is capable of playing for 4 more years. I am a stern Omar defender, I think he has done WAY more good than bad for this team. But that contract is a head scratcher.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

trust me a head scratcher for aloooooooooooot of people

      • metsfan119 says:

And the thing is, I’m not even THAT pissed about getting rid of Gotay, but Orlando Hudson (a great defensive 2nd baseman and a solid hitter) will be a free agent after this year, and that’s one of the many moves the Mets can’t consider because they are now locked into this guy. Was there really a team out there that forced this team to offer 4 years?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          thats what the “reports” say…

        • therealsince86 says:

We did not need Hudson, he will cost something like 12-14 million and 5 years.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

Part of Omar’s job is to set up aging players with a retirement fund. I think we’re becoming extremely selfish when we expect a GM to only sign players to contracts that are going to benefit the team. ;)

        • njmatt says:

          Sounds like Jersey politics.

    • metsfan119 says:

Omar builds teams like he’s playing a video game. He seems to assume that injuries or age will never be a factor.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

lolllll good one. I have the show and castillo is great in the 2 hole. Maybe omar plays it as well lol

      • njmatt says:

I disagree, young players don’t just appear out of thin air, it takes time to build a franchise. The problem is, Omar has a ton of pressure on him to win now, so even though he is trying to restock the farm system, he has to sign these older players to be important parts of the team because the pressure is on him. In the case of Castillo though, he just overpaid like crazy, I know we don’t have anyone in the farm system to play 2b anymore, but come on…4 years?

        • therealsince86 says:

4 years was too long but it was just a case of the Mets using large market resources to get the man they wanted. The can unload him later if they need to and eat much of the contract.

    • jws366 says:

      Agree 100%.

  120. gipper91375 says:

Scully is such a pro, you can hear how he changes his “word picture” spiel when they stop his portion of the radio simulcast (generally he does onlt the first three innings as a radio simulcast).

If all opposing broadcasts were this good, you wouldn’t mind the feeds on Extra Innings or MLB.tv. Sadly, so many booths are horrid. The D-Bags this weekend were particulalry heinous.

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

Could you imagine Vin Scully as a Braves announcer? Braves fans would complain that since he doesn’t cheer for the team, they have no idea when they’re supposed to be cheering themselves.

  121. Koko says:

Castillo is our 8th hitter. Lets give some crap to Wright, Church, etc too for not getting Reyes in earlier.

  122. trippingac says:

…meanwhile, the D-Backs are making Jamie Moyer look like Tom Seaver in Arizona…

…time to open the bottle of Maker’s Mark…

  123. DavidDog says:

i feel castillo is so much less of a threat cause his speed is not nearly what it used to be. he used to intimidate pitchers cause he could fly to first and steal 60 bases. Now they just go right after him

  124. metsfan119 says:

Don’t get Willie angry ump, he may frown at you!

  125. desimetfan says:

perez at his worst is better than pelfrey

  126. DavidDog says:

ok im starting 2 get sick of this schneider guy too

  127. dykstraw says:

can mr. met get schneider a t-shirt gun to fire the ball to second?

  128. DavidDog says:

looks like a good time for jones 2 break out of his slump

  129. gipper91375 says:

Look, Schneider calls a great game, but geez, at what point do we question his whole “defensive catcher” label after all these passed balls, “wild pitches” that are blockable, and throws to the San Juaquin Valley?

  130. CLYONS says:

where is castillo backing that throw up..lazy ass

  131. desimetfan says:

ok met fans i think u guys forgot that schneiders hand was infected

  132. CLYONS says:

and it could be possible that schneider is still having trouble throwing being that thats the hand with the infection

    • gipper91375 says:

And that explains the plethora of passed balls before the infection?

      • CLYONS says:

he was still getting used to the pitching staff…why are all mets fans so critical

        • gipper91375 says:

          CLYONS,

All I did was ask at what point do we question his label as a defensive catcher. You have exuses for him. At what point do those excuses fail to hold water is the question on the table.

Why critical (not that my comment was)? Why are Mets fans critical. Gee, let me think? 21 years in the wilderness and counting. An epic Collapse that evaporated any benefits of any doubts that Mets fans had left with this particular crew. A .178 avg with RISP and falling. A “bored” team. A manager ill equipped for the intellectual0style of the NL. Need I go on?

Why are some Mets fans so defensive when someone dares disuss issues about the team?

        • therealsince86 says:

Gip your act is getting really old. Maybe that’s why I called you an old man.

        • gipper91375 says:

          Not as Old as Ollie’s act…or Willie’s?

Besides, who’s acting? What in that is untrue or trumped up?

        • therealsince86 says:

Let’s see, 21 years in the wilderness sounds a little over dramatic.

        • gipper91375 says:

          21 years of futility?

21 years of being championship challenged?

Seriously dude, all my original comment did was ask at what point do we question Schneider’s label as a defensive catcher, given his high rate of passed balls (which he himself has commented on) and some real corkers of throws. Hardly a diatribe. Scroll up and read it.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think his body of work speaks for itself. As for your 21 year junk, LOL

        • darkstar73 says:

boo hoo, Schneider is now under %50 for the season throwing out guys, he’s only caught 2 games in the past 10 days and I”m expecting him to be perfect, boo hoo! damn Gipper, you are one of the most annoying posters on this blog, and there have been some bad ones over the years.

        • therealsince86 says:

Funny thing is that he shows potential of being normal at times only to completely go off the deep end at times. I kinda like him until the 900th post on the same thing.

        • gipper91375 says:

          Pot, meet kettle.

        • gipper91375 says:

Darkstar, when did I say I expect him to be perfect? When did I say I was unaware this is his second game back (not sure what that has to do with his passed balls before the funky finger sidelined him, though)?

Let me quote my original post, which was, after all, a question, not a negative diatribe:

“Look, Schneider calls a great game, but geez, at what point do we question his whole “defensive catcher” label after all these passed balls, “wild pitches” that are blockable, and throws to the San Juaquin Valley?”

So, I simply asked fellow fans when we should worry about this guy’s defensive skills after I laud his game-calling ability. I do refer to some of his lapses humorously.

For that I get lambasted? Most annoying poster ever? Ooookay.

As I recall, Gary and Keith and Ron have mentioned many times how odd it is to see Schneider boxing balls so often this season. Are they some of the most annoying broadcasters for pointing this out? Are they insufficiently optimistic? Or harboring ridiculous expectations of perfection

Whatever. I don’t care what you think. You prove your intellectual limitations and observational deficiencies on a daily basis around here.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

well he has not caught the pitchers too much during ST. He’s still feeling them out.

    • backinbusiness says:

pretty sure its his glove hand that was infected…

  133. Dirtysanchez says:

    LOLLLLL
    DAMN WHO GETS BOOED LOUDER
    JONES OR DELGADO LOLLL
guess ny isnt that bad with the boos

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

      Actually it’s not that bad.
The media made a much bigger deal out of it than it’s been.

Granted, Delgado was getting a lot of the boos. But the whole booing thing became a MUCH bigger deal than it ever should have.

  134. gipper91375 says:

My my, what mean, horrible people booing Andruw Jones. His feelings must be hurt. What bad, bad fans.

  135. trippingac says:

Okay, Ollie seems to have settled in. The offense has to pick him up. C’MON! LET’S GO METS!!!

  136. stickguy says:

Man, they are booing Andru something fierce. I didn’t think Dodger fans paid enough attention to boo someone!

    • metsfan119 says:

Well, when they’re not busy jumping on the Lakers bandwagon they need something to pass the time

  137. metsfan119 says:

Ok, that’s about enough of this, can we hit this guy now, please

  138. Ludacrispat says:

This has made me realize just how bad a job Minaya has actually done since he got here. I know we love him, but let’s look at this objectively:

Pedro- Thus far, bad signing. He had one average to below-average year, one very good year, one year of barely anything, and so far this, all for a very large contract.

Beltran-Good signing. Not spectacular, as it was probably pushed from front office and the Mets had the money for it anyway.

Delgado-Bad.One solid year, but nothing since. Mike Jacobs could have been a cheaper option (with actually more power0.

Castillo-Not an entirely awful trade, but an incredibly awful 4 year resign.

Perez- Good trade, but with his struggles and Nady’s play, how good?

    Alou- Very good signing.

Church/Schneider- So far, so good. However, Schneider is fading fast and we have to see what Milledge does over the next few years as well.

LoDuca- Okay signing. Pretty good for one year, but very bad the next.

Heath Bell/Royce Ring for Ben Johnson- Incredibly bad trade.

Endy Chavez- Good signing for 2006, but only okay after that.

Lindstrom/Owens for Jason Vargas- Another bad and detrimental trade.

Letting Jesus Flores go- Could be a very big blunder.

Scott Schoenweiss/Matt Wise- Two bad signings and waste of money.

    Duaner Sanchez- Solid trade.

    Billy Wagner- Very good signing.

Jorge Sosa- Okay signing so far.

    Angel Pagan/Marlon Anderson- Good pickups.

    El Duque/John Maine- Great trade.

Brian Banniser for Burgos- Terrible deal.

Julio Franco- Average signing, awful resign.

    Ramon Castro- Solid sign.

So, his best moves (Beltran, Wagner) weren’t that hard to pull off with the money at hand. Smaller moves such as Perez and Maine worked out, but were definitely counteracted by bad deals like Bannister, Owens, Lindstrom, and Bell (especially when the bullpen was in shambles). Some of his major signings/trades like Castillo, Pedro, and Delgado have just not worked out.

Overall, maybe give him a 6.5/10? But just nothing like Mets fans give him credit for.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      pedro signing thus far bad?

Alot of the people on this team would not be here if not for that signing

      • metsfan119 says:

        That’s so not true

      • Ludacrispat says:

Who? Beltran- I doubt that. Delgado- would that have been a bad thing? Name the others please.

        • therealsince86 says:

You may be an idiot, did you know we did not sign Delgado?

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

And Delgado would have been here anyway since it was a trade. I love Pedro, but just like I don’t buy that Castillo got us Santana, I don’t buy that Pedro brought in other players. Not directly anyway.

What Pedro DID do though, was take a team that was going in the opposite direction, and gave them an immediate spark and a shot of legitimacy again. I think that has paid off to this day.

        • Ludacrispat says:

How, exactly, did Pedro do that? He was great in 2005, but what about 2006 and 2007 and 2008? What specifically has he done?

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

How did he give them a spark?

        • Ludacrispat says:

Yeah, what exactly did he do to give them a spark, whatever that means?

If Pedro doesn’t dance and where goggles and have a midget friend, do the Mets suck in ‘06?

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

I think you’re missing the point. I’m not talking about the players. I’m talking about as a legitimate team that people would want to come out and see again. I don’t know if you’re in NY, but when Pedro got here, every game he started was an event and got top billing in the city. It was Pedro who made it fun for people to get out to Shea again if they decided to stay away for a while. That’s all I was trying to say. I don’t think it’s something that should be overlooked.

        • Ludacrispat says:

I am from NY, and I do see where you are coming from with that.

However, let’s not give Pedro too much credit. Really, he only pitched 1 out of every 5 days. I think in 2005 it was much more exciting to see Reyes,Wright, and Floyd.

        • AlreadyMissShea says:

I agree, I was just saying it’s not something that should be overlooked. There are a lot of bandwagon fans who learned about Wright and Reyes because they came to see Pedro.

    • Ludacrispat says:

      And some more I forgot:

      Jose Valentin- Great, cheap pickup.

Ruben Gotay- Solid trade, but did we get enough out of him to let him go for nothing?

      Jeff Keppinger- BIG mistake

    • zen says:

      before omar
      2002: 75-86
      2003: 66-95
      2004: 71-91

      after omar
      2005: 83-79
      2006: 97-65
      2007: 88-74
      2008: 16-13

      • Dirtysanchez says:

        thank you zen

      • Ludacrispat says:

But those years are most due to the maturation of Jose Reyes and David Wright (NOT Minaya moves).

His moves for 2006 were definitely good, but since then, it has been downhill.

        • therealsince86 says:

I give you a 2.2 on that comment.

        • Ludacrispat says:

What moves did he make for the 2007 season or 2008 other than Johan that we can highly commend him for? Seriously

        • therealsince86 says:

Letting Loduca and Glavine leave. That’s easy.

        • Ludacrispat says:

Yes, that was easy. In fact, I can only give him credit for NOT being an idiot and signing them again.

What else has he added to make the club better?

        • therealsince86 says:

          Church, Schneider, Pagan.

        • Ludacrispat says:

You are jumping the gun and giving too much credit to these guys.

Church- so far, excellent. No qualms, but this is his best stuff. We haven’t seen Milledge’s best yet.

Schneider- Really? The guy has no power and his stats are already fading fast, and he really hasn’t been all that good defensively either.

Pagan-The guys has an OPS+ of 96. He has a .272 BA with 0 homers from the left field spot. A decent trade, but nothing to write home about.

        • therealsince86 says:

Decent bench guy however. You ask for ways he improved this year’s team. Those are ways. Besides Schneider and Church are a much bigger improvement over the 2008 Milledge and Loduca.

    • therealsince86 says:

I give you about 3.14 on your 6.5.

    • jws366 says:

You kinda forgot Johan Santana and re-signing D-Wright and Jose Reyes to pretty solid contracts…

      • Ludacrispat says:

        My mistake.

Johan- Clearly a great trade. Pretty much saves his job.

        • jws366 says:

Really, you should check out the amazing contracts that he re-signed wright and reyes to before they blew up as superstars…

        • Ludacrispat says:

I mean, do you think Omar works alone on these contract deals? So much is involved from the front office (Wilpon, etc), besides the fact that you have two loyal kids that really want to be here and see the team win, what makes you think another GM wouldn’t have made the same resigns?

        • therealsince86 says:

So let met get this straight, all the good signings were inspite of Omar and all the bad ones were because of him?

        • Ludacrispat says:

          Re-signs.

I don’t give him much crap for any of the signs. He has a ton of money behind him and the Wilpons on his neck. It’s not like he has a limited budget to work with.

But the trades this far (save Santana) have not been all that pretty.

        • therealsince86 says:

Church trade looks good enough right now. Most of his other trades have been minor hit or miss trades of players that were not even on the 25 man roster.

        • Ludacrispat says:

          Minor?

You call Brian Bannister, Jeff Keppinger and Heath Bell MINOR?

Look at their numbers. Go on. Check them out right now.

        • therealsince86 says:

Yes now they are doing fine, then very minor players. Bell and Kepp had no spot on the team and were losing trade value. After all Kepp was released by KC. Bannister was somke and mirrors here and would have been in AAA.

    • CitizenSnips says:

Wise pitched in one game. How do we know if he’s bad?

  139. Dirtysanchez says:

man can we take some pitches and work this guy please…..i dont think he is breaking a sweat out there

  140. grotesmask says:

Let’s give Ollie some credit; I think he’s battling tonight. Not so bad. He’s got to go six and keep us close here.

  141. njmatt says:

I would love to see a spray chart for Reyes, I feel like he is just trying to pull EVERYTHING. The Reyes I know and love drives the ball the other way with serious authority. Hopefully he can straighten himself out, it’s tough to watch him struggle so much and mope around.

  142. jws366 says:

I sense an OP blow up here from billingsly…

  143. Dirtysanchez says:

    wow…………….

  144. jws366 says:

That was the sickest play I’ve seen this entire year…

  145. huge_mets_fan11 says:

How… What just happened? That was a great play

  146. miker94 says:

another typical mets night, no offense when we need it, no fight and boy is castillo worthless

    • therealsince86 says:

No fight? Here we go again.

      • miker94 says:

yeah no fight, it’s the willie curse, the one when you get down and everyone in the dugout looks like…oh wait, they look like Torre, wonder where they got that! and ollie must go!

        • therealsince86 says:

          Did we have fight yesterday?

        • gipper91375 says:

          We had Connor Jackson.

        • miker94 says:

yesterday was handed to us. listen, i’m as big a fan as anyone, probably more, but we just don’t have fight, it’s simple. if you think we do, you are blind, period. we will show spurts of heart, but very little and it’s willie’s fault. again, if you don’t see that, i’m afraid you are in for a very long season.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think Willie may need to go but the heart thing is just crap.

        • gipper91375 says:

I actually would usually agree with you on the whole heart/fire thing. (Shocking, I know).

But, when the players themselves reference it…..it becomes hard to discount.

  147. Metdamage says:

David Wright Sucks!!!!! He never gets a hit in the clutch, the Mets should try and trade him to Texas for Vincente Padilla!!!!

  148. stickguy says:

Well, this game is getting frustrating. Hopefully I cehck the box score in the morning and see a nice 7 spot in the top of th e8th or soemthing!

    • WrightsRight says:

never happen…not against the dodgers’ 8th inning guy and their closer.

  149. njmatt says:

You know you’re going poorly when it seems like there are 2-3 web gems made against you per night

  150. i hate men named Blake…even more so now

  151. Dirtysanchez says:

    AH PERFECT TIMING
what inning are we in …………….

  152. gipper91375 says:

Another chump get his first ML homer off a Mets pitcher.

  153. WrightsRight says:

jeez….mets must lead MLB in giving up “first ever major league” home runs…seems like it happens at least a few times a season.

  154. mr.gee21 says:

Tell me Ollie, have the alpacas stopped screaming?

  155. stickguy says:

OK Ollie, way to keep it close for them!

  156. I’ve been trying to post my comment on a certain someone who is seen sitting behind homeplate but everytime I try it doesn’t get posted. Very strange

  157. huge_mets_fan11 says:

I bet you this guy DeWitt will have about 30 hrs in his major league career.

  158. ghobot says:

yes, that is ny sucks they are chanting.

  159. The Glider says:

Scott Boras is having a heart attack.

  160. njmatt says:

The Mets games since last June have seemed to follow this same outline. It’s getting really boring to watch, I think that is my biggest complaint, I’m just ready to see some good baseball, there are a few teases, but for the most part, you KNOW exactly what is going to happen in every situation and they don’t surprise you at all. It’s boring…and yet I can not stop watching. haha

  161. jws366 says:

Because on a good weekend they’ll take 2 out of 3 against the D-Backs and give you some hope..

  162. SantanaCYYOung says:

    good night guys

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

just wanted to also point out that i think the philliies have better pitching than the mets

  163. WrightsRight says:

i guess the Dodgers didn’t get the memo about it being difficult to hit HRs at night in Dodger Stadium…

  164. metsfan119 says:

God for bid this team actually takes a good series and builds from it. Good night everyone

  165. backinbusiness says:

Oh crap, its Oliver Santana-Heilman-Sosa (I feel dirty just putting Johan in that group).
A brand new kind of “Bad OP.”

  166. huge_mets_fan11 says:

The thing that I have noticed with the Mets is that I wish they had a guy that does not strike out and works counts. It seems that every time the Mets have faced a team this year they have a guy that doesn’t strike out. I wish the Mets had someone like that.

  167. Zug says:

Yeah, I’m out. Why I stayed up to watch an Oliver Perez game is beyond my comprehension. G’night.

  168. zen says:

why don’t the mets spend a couple of million on bringing the dodgers scouts aboard? Or the d-back and twins scouts.

that would save them tons of cash in the long-term.

  169. Sasseroni says:

I think Boras is now pulling his eyes out………like the rest of Mets country after that homer.

  170. HITorDIE25 says:

    To Oliver Perez

    Figure it out numb nuts…

  171. HITorDIE25 says:

P.s. this is why I droped OP from my fantasy team…my only problem is it was 4 starts too late.

  172. WrightsRight says:

i hate to say this but maybe the mets can pretend they’re the phillies, bear down and actually have a dramatic comeback…..

  173. CLYONS says:

he just dies in the 5th and 6th inning every start…considering he gets that far of course

  174. ccmetfan says:

you’d think Perez would great on his country’s special day, cinco de mayo

  175. For real, I want to fight Oliver Perez.

  176. njmatt says:

The biggest problem with Ollie, is if he doesn’t have his shutdown stuff, he can’t figure out how to win, which, how many times do we hear over and over is the key to being a great pitcher: win when you don’t have your best stuff.

Oh well, in reality, it is just one game, just sucks staying up to watch it.

    • HITorDIE25 says:

actually 3 and a row for him

      • njmatt says:

        I meant for the team

and the other reality is, there are still 2 more games in this series, if the Mets can win both, tonight becomes irrelevant at this point in the season.

  177. backinbusiness says:

Come on Delgado, how bout an HR here for all those who just went to bed?

  178. khmustache says:

just got off work…has perez been as bad as the score looks?

  179. HITorDIE25 says:

    F-shift…thats a hit

  180. jws366 says:

I don’t know if this is asking too much…but shouldn’t a professional baseball player be able to hit the ball the other way (even on the ground) when there is a gaping hole in the infield?

  181. marvelousmarv says:

Anyone still think this is too early!

    • gipper91375 says:

Some on here still think it’s too early for dismay over 2007!

      • therealsince86 says:

Some think it still is 2007.

        • gipper91375 says:

          They sure play that way.

        • therealsince86 says:

Really? In 2007 we started off really good, you mean they play like the September 2007 Mets? Nope we are winning more than that and have a winning home record. You mean the June-September 2007 Mets? No, they were under .500. You mean the one that never had a 5 game winning streak? Nope? How about the one without Santana? Nope> What is the same?

        • gipper91375 says:

Roughly .500 ball (same as 2007 from May 07 through now). Playing below talent level. Horrid with RISP. Putrid bullpen. Inconsistent SP. Playing down to weaker competition. Delgado in decline. Reyes floundering.

Oh, and yes, same doofus as manager

    • therealsince86 says:

Too early for what, to lose the 1st game of a series to a hot team on the road after winning 2/3 on the road vs. the best team in the NL?

      • marvelousmarv says:

So you’re saying that you are confident that the team is going to win the division!! You’re saying that this moderate start is just not a true reflection of this team? You’re saying that what we saw against the D-Backs were the real Mets?

        • therealsince86 says:

I am saying that you can’t expect to win every game on a road trip against really good teams. Go .500 on the road and play well at home. Good baseball strategy as well as the old saying, Don’t jump off a bridge when your team loses a game.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

really too early for what. The dodgers have steamrolled their opponents with a great offense.

  182. njmatt says:

I don’t normally do this but I have to run 9 miles in the morning then I have a 9am final….so, time for bed, goodnight guys, Lets go Mets! It’s still early. Every team goes through periods like this, it just seems worse because of the collapse.

  183. njmatt says:

Oh and PS, I don’t care how bad Ollie pitches, he will get 5 days rest and needs to take one for the team. We need 7 innings. Time to man up.

  184. jws366 says:

At this point I just want to get 6 or 7 (ideally) out of perez so we don’t kill our bullpen for a lost cause…

  185. khmustache says:

more in shape: andruw jones or charles barkely?

  186. darkstar73 says:

i’ll join the fray with some blanket statement of my own! when this team loses, this team sucks, has no future, has a horrible manager, and the GM is a dumbsh*t. However, whenever we win, I really feel like this team is a pretty decent team! You know what one of my favorite past times is? Bringing up old trades, signings, etc. that Omar made whenever we lose, it helps me cope with the over dependance my general state of mind has on the Mets. In fact, I just wait for moments to freak out and get on a blog and rant and rave, I just love it! Go Mets!

    • jws366 says:

When I said lost cause I meant this game, not the team…

I just figure that the dodger’s pen is too solid to blow this right now…

    • jws366 says:

also, check my comment that i made just a few minutes before the game started about the mets not winning tonight. It didn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that out…no need to kill us for being upset

(the list of omar’s dealings was a little over the top)

    • gipper91375 says:

From the guy who had oh so much respect for those commenters yesterday who are consistent in still calling out the teams weaknesses and for Willie’s head, even after a win?

  187. DavidDog says:

nice double play, at least we get to hear arndruuuw get buuuwd

  188. ccmetfan says:

    Finally!!Ollie reaches the 6th inning

    • therealsince86 says:

      Too bad it’s 5-1

      • ccmetfan says:

one step at a time. hopefully he pitches better in his next start. He hasn’t walked many players and the only mistakes were the long balls.

  189. backinbusiness says:

95 pitches. it baffles the mind. come on willie.

  190. jws366 says:

For the record, Jamie Moyer is everything that we could hope for El Duque to be…

  191. backinbusiness says:

is there anything preventing willie from putting OP back in there, now that they are making a pitching change?

  192. DavidDog says:

this pagan also cant hit a lick! looks like a minor leaguer 2 me

  193. jws366 says:

I’d be interested to see who sees more pitches per AB, Church or Castillo…because at this point I feel like we are letting pitchers get through the top of our order without much trouble…

    • therealsince86 says:

I have noticed that Church is a little too aggressive in the 2 spot. he’s just not used to waiting for the “best” pitch.

  194. DavidDog says:

scully’s right! i wasnt aroud, but did bats really brake so often (and so dramatically) in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s…? planned obsolescence?

    • gipper91375 says:

No, as Keith, Gary and to a lesser extent Ron have pointed out ad infinitum…..player use bats of different types of wood and weight than they used to.

  195. Dirtysanchez says:

yup this game is in the books

  196. khmustache says:

the hitting machine looked terrible right there

  197. CitizenSnips says:

Sosa’s up. Time for the Mets to score 5 runs, have Wagner come in for the save and Sosa can rack up his 5th win.

  198. jws366 says:

    Finally he makes a throw!

  199. khmustache says:

    glad that one’s over…g’nite everybody

  200. Dirtysanchez says:

Welp hopefully figz can help tie this one up…………….

  201. Dirtysanchez says:

    gnite everyone

  202. therealsince86 says:

Season’s over. Met’s lost on the road to a team that has won 10/12 games. Lets write the season off now. Same ole Mets. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODBYEEEEEEEEEEE!

    • AlreadyMissShea says:

I haven’t replied to any of your posts tonight, but honestly, I don’t see anyone actually behaving like that. If they are, and I’m just missing their posts, then it is indeed ridiculous. But seriously, I don’t see where it’s coming from.

  203. playmaker3128 says:

Most frustrating thing as a met fan is the inconsistancy. Between this year and last year our longest winning streak has been 5 games. We did it once last year i believe and once this year. I realize in baseball teams will go through stretches where your gonna have your ups and downs. It just seems like this team is stuck in the win 2, lose 3, win 3, lose 2 type pattern. We’ve all been waiting for them to get hot, and maybe win 9 outta 10 games. It just doesn’t seem to happen.

I can’t point to any one thing thats causing it either. Its frustrating. Hopefully we’ll break out of it. Also one other thing, good to see delgado finally start hitting the ball again. Now we gotta get beltran and wright going. Wright seems to be trying to pull that pitch on the outside corner against righties way to often. He has to go the other way with it.

  204. grotesmask says:

What a complete crap performance all around. Yeah, I know it’s one game, and if… if we win the next two, life’s okay. But something about this Mets team looks so unbalanced.

Starting pitching gives me very little confidence now. Offensive numbers just stink compared to our main competitors, and when Reyes, Wright, and Church don’t hit, we simply don’t win.

Sure, LA’s hot of late, but their pitcher tonight is such a middling talent; should’ve kicked the sh)& out of them.

I am so close to turning my back on Perez, and I had huge expectations for him. Please prove me wrong.

  205. craigary says:

To playmaker: Uh, Chad Billingsley’s not only not a “middling talent,” he’s considered one of the best young pitchers in baseball. Should do a little research to hear what scouts say about him (not fantasy baseball experts who look at his record to start this season). Look at his numbers overall, and the scouting reports. the guy has great stuff. There’s no great shame in losing to him, even if the Mets certainly had their opportunities. He was a first round pick, their top prospect in 2006, and one of their scout Logan White’s prized draftees.

    • Gina says:

“There’s no great shame in losing to him”

That seems to be the excuse every time we face a half-way decent pitcher. If we want to win a world series we’re going to have to hit good pitching at some point. The guy came into this game with an ERA 5.2 ERA, so obviously he’s hittable. Plus we left 13 men on base so it’s not like he was dominating our batters with his stuff, we just weren’t capitalizing.

      • Deaner says:

The mets were able to beat michah owings, dan haren, john smoltz, tim hudson, and cole hamels to name a few good pitchers.

But I’m sure you knew that.

        • Gina says:

Then Billingsley being a top prospect definitely isn’t an excuse for not scoring runs.
