Read: A World Without Julio Franco
By Brandon Eddy - May 5, 2008 4:33 pm

At the ripe age of 49, former Met Julio Franco finally decided to retire on Saturday.

ESPN.com ’s PAGE 2 put together a pretty interesting list of tidbits that were happening in 1981, which was the last time Franco was officially out of MLB.

Some of the items listed:

Reggie Jackson was the highest paid player in baseball in 1981, with a salary of $588,000.

• The average major league salary was approximately $144,000, and the average ticket price was $4.50.

• Atari Baseball for the Atari VCS was the premier baseball video game.

• Metallica and Motley Crue formed.

…not much for me to comment here since I was only 4 in 1981, however the list is pretty fun to read…

…best of luck to father time franco in his retirement…

“Atari Baseball for the Atari VCS was the premier baseball video game.”

Intellivision Baseball kicked it’s @$$.
For it’s time, Intellivision Baseball was the best game in the ENTIRE WORLD!

Yes you are right about that AMS!! Intellivision Major League Baseball kicked butt. I had no patience for my Atari joystick-dependent friends who struggled with the disc and keypad controls on the Intellivision.

Luckily I had a good friend who also had Intellivision and we had baseball games that were about as nailbiting as a great pitcher’s duel - usually one of us would win 1-0, on a homerun…

(Sorry for the reminiscences everybody. Couldn’t resist….)

That’s the first game I ever owned that had anything even close to a voice.

Remember the ump?

“YER OUR!”

Yes!! “YER OUT!” kind of sounded like a loud beer-fueled burp.

By the way, nice timing on the new Willie poll.
I hope we see many more Willie polls, as that will surely be a sign that the team is winning. ;)

Ha.

sometimes I wonder if Matt ever gets sick and tired of us, throws up his arms, and hangs out on Deadspin the rest of the day….

To be fair I think Matt should also put in confidence ratings for Rick Peterson and Howard Johnson.

My confidence in Peterson is at an all time low.

I will give everyone involved with the pitching staff including Peterson a little bit of time now that Schneider is back. In fact, even though I’m not a fan of Willie, I think the whole team deserves on month now that most of the team is together. I’m not counting on Pedro, but if he makes it back and he’s good it’s a bonus. I don’t believe we will ever see El Duque again. Therefore, what we are seeing right now is more or less our team.

One month to show that they can be as consistant as they through much of the past weekend. Not as concerned with wins and losses as I am with how they play as a team.

That means for one month, I will no longer call for Willie’s head. Or Peterson’s, or anyone else’s. At the same time, for one month, I would like to see people refrain from posting after each win and calling out others who have been dissatisfied.

Maybe everyone can agree to settle down and let the games be played on the field. I’ve been as guilty as anyone. Give them a month to show us what they’ve got, and then after that all bets are off. Of course, some of us might end up eating some of our own words from the last few weeks too!

Doesn’t mean I won’t still be critical of stuff though… Sometimes you just have to be. But for one month, no more calling for anyone’s head. At least not from me.

Of course, I’m not trying to tell anyone else what to do, that’s just what I’m going to do myself. :)

‘Cause it’s baseball, and it’s supposed to be fun.

Well, in all fairness, the last game at Shea was anything but. Now it’s time to prove that it was just one game. They did a good job of that in AZ.

And the Mets had players such as: John Stearns, Ellis Valentine, Mike Cubbage, Pete Falcone, Ron Gardenhire, a young Mookie, Craig Swan….ahhh the memories.

And Hubie (as in Brooks)…

And yes, Wally (as in Backman, as in Fire…..)

What names the Mets had back then - Mookie, Hubie, Wally… but no Augie (I can’t stop with the Augie Ojeda references. The name just cracks me up.)

Sorry about continue to hijack this post about Franco, but. . .

Did anyone else see this:

Gammons notes that the Rangers wanted Mike Pelfrey, Aaron Heilman, and Deolis Guerra for Vicente Padilla in the offseason. Even as a negotiation starting point, that’s a ton for Padilla.

Oh that would have been horrible. It was even horrible if Omar thought about the proposal for more then 10 seconds.

he couldn’t have thought about it for too long considering guerra was the most valuable piece in the santana deal.

Geez I thought Julio Franco had another 10-15 years left in the tank…. Oh well.

Seriously though, Franco and Ryne Sandberg are 2 guys the Phillies probably wish they hadn’t traded away all those years ago.

Hard to believe Franco was once the starting shortstop for the Cleveland Indians in the early 80’s…..

What do you young whipper-snappers know about memories? When I was a kid you had to walk up a hill, five miles, in the snow, both ways… and I had to share ONE memory with my 11 brothers and sisters! WHY I OUGHTA!

Actually, you’re not THAT much younger than me! :)

FTA: “• Fantasy baseball hadn’t developed beyond a few sportswriter friends playing at the La Rotisserie Francaise restaurant in New York City.”

Stratomatic Baseball turned 20 years old in 1981. Suck it Rotisserie!
