Health: Wise and Ramon Castro

by Matthew Cerrone

In a rehab start for Single-A St. Lucie, Ramon Castro hit a two-run home run and caught all nine innings.

Meanwhile, Matt Wise is scheduled to pitch back-to-back days this week for St. Lucie, which is said to be his final step in his rehab from a sore right forearm.

i expect to see both of these players back with the Mets by the weekend…of course, that will mean a corresponding move in the bullpen, such as demoting Joe Smith or designating Jorge Sosa for assignment

I’d be surprised if they designated Sosa. They need someone who can go 3-4 innings in relief and do spot starts when needed. Especially with a staff that seems to get to 100 pitches in 5 innings most games.

Let’s DFA Sosa. Somebody please inform Omar that’s my decision.

They won’t DFA Sosa, he is an Omar and Willie “guy”

Would it be terrible to send Oli Perez down to the minors for some tweaking (ala Steve Trachsel)? If you recall, Slow Steve came back and shut down every team he faced for about 2 months after his return.

Anyone know if OP has any OPtions left?

Joe Smith has been more effective than Sosa, and I’d like to see him stay up here.

Sosa has done a pretty decent job for us, in fact he has been excellent at times, but he is not a championship caliber pitcher.

His lifetime ERA+ is 94, and he is consistently below 100 (average) every year.

I agree with both of the above posts, as such I am a little confused as to why Weiss would be brought up.

The one struggling the most at the moment is Heilmann, but putting him down for a rest (ala trachsel) may not help him but hurt him.

Again, what is with Weiss that makes him so good. He could be a nice fresh arm later in the year, but now?

Hmmm.

magic00700magic May 6, 2008 at 8:13 am

Ooops, meant Wise, not Weiss.

the_other_matt May 6, 2008 at 9:34 am

…Although I’d take Al Wies at 2B right about now.

Wise has a major league contract. He was signed to pitch; therefore, he will pitch.

stickguy May 6, 2008 at 8:18 am

I assume that he has to be brought back up at some point, since he can’t stay on a rehab stint forever? The league must have ruls about that, so you can’t effectively stash players in the minors.

At this point, it may be Sith since he has the options, and Wise can take the same innings. If nothing else, maybe it will limit the innings Sosa has to pitch?

I would send Smith down for a little seasoning (and rest), while promoting Wise. When Pedro comes back, that is when the decision needs to be made. I would move either Pelfrey or Figueroa to the bullpen and let the other one start.
In that scenario, Sosa would get DFA’d (a move I hate because I can see Philly picking him up and the Mets making him look like Tom Seaver over the final 4 months…but it has to be done).

But, when and how do you bring Joe Smith back up? Is Angel Pagan expendible now? Do the Mets think they need to go with an extra bullpen arm until their starters prove they can go 7 innings consistently?

JefJarrett May 6, 2008 at 9:01 am

I would send Smith down as we do need a “long man” in the bullpen. Once/if Pedro returns, and Figgy is still proving to be a good option you can designate Sosa if you want to and replace him with Figgy in the pen.

Or you do send Heilman down to straighten things out – as he is pretty much useless to us right now. As for the Heilman as a starter debate……..well, if you feel Sanchez is back and the answer then sure go stretch Heilman out down in NO and see if he has what it takes……does it hurt anything?

Protes May 6, 2008 at 8:52 am

Heilman’s the one who deserves to be demoted.

Ollie Ollie Oxen Free Pass May 6, 2008 at 9:43 am

You can’t demote Heilman. He has proven that he is ready at the major league level for about 3 years now. Demoting him will do nothing but wreck his psyche.

krumbledkookie May 6, 2008 at 10:08 am

I agree that Heilman, under regular circumstances, should not be demoted. But consider this:

Heilman has struggled this season thus far, but has proven himself to be a major league talent. and one of the better relievers in the NL, over the last 3 years. At the same time, he’d like to start – we all know this. So why not split the difference? Send him down to NO to stretch out his arm and get him ready to be the long man/spot starter. Maybe he can even work on his splitter a bit, and solidify that 3rd pitch to go with his +fastball and ++changeup. In the meantime, activate Wise ot fill Heilman’s role.

When Aaron is ready, call him up and DFA Sosa, who has been worse, in my opinion, than Heilman (at least Heilman has a proven track record – Sosa’s track record is one of sucking).

Just a thought. What do you think?

gowrightgo May 6, 2008 at 10:31 am

I am not against it except at some point….we have too many arms. When Pedro returns, forget Duque, but when Pedro returns, we have the following guys….

Santana
Perez
Maine
Pelfrey
Figueroa
Pedro

Add in Heilman to that mix and you have way too many.

I can see Heilman being happy that he is getting an opp to start though in your scenario. But who goes?

MudvilleNine May 6, 2008 at 12:06 pm

How about a trade? I’m sure we could get a decent prospect or two for one of them. This would be better than DFA’ing someone and giving the Phillies or Braves a chance of picking him up and haunting us with him.

maidsintheshades May 6, 2008 at 10:46 am

his psyche already stinks–demoting trachsel a few yrs ago worked and sosa is too versatile to DFA this early in season

maidsintheshades May 6, 2008 at 10:45 am

completely agree–trachsel him until he figures it out

blains2000 May 6, 2008 at 2:20 pm

That’s awesome. Trachsel as a verb.
