Darryl Strawberry made his major-league debut 25 years ago today.
At MLB.com, Marty Noble looks back at Strawberry’s time with the Mets.
According to Matt Artus, at Always Amazin, ‘‘The Jacket’ is going out of style.’
In a report for Gotham Baseball Magazine, Mark Healey believes that the Mets should not fire Willie Randolph.
Lastly, at Mets Fever, Ed Ryan suggests the Mets give Triple-A RHP Tony Armas Jr. a try.

This team will never win a championship with Willie as a manager or Delgado at first. They have a solid core of talent, but as long as those factors are in place, they’re not going to the next level.
Luckily, success doesn’t depend on your opinion of the team. Otherwise I’d be saying “The Mets will never win with metsfan119 as a fan’.
ooooo.. face!
Lol. Hey, how do you know? It may be true.
Maybe metsfan119 will root for the phillthies for the rest of the year so we can find out. :-)
Try Armas out where? The rotation is ok, outside of Perez being bad his last 3 outings. Figueroa has been good , so he’s seemingly going nowhere, and the bullpen is full. Is Armas going to play 1st or second base?
M-I-K-E P-E-L-F-R-E-Y? Perhaps you’ve heard of him?
Straw debuted a quarter century ago?!?
Geez! Thanks for making me feel very, very old.
I had the Doc Gooden version of that shirt :-)
And I had that very shirt (depicted above)! I loved those things. And, when I attend Mets’ games, I’m still wearing a Strawberry jersey today. No use dwelling on what might have been with Darryl. What he was was pretty darn good as it stood — and remember the era he played in.
haha.. i had that straw tee back in the day….. circa 87′
I just can’t help but wonder what Bobby V could do with this club which is much more talented in my opinion than the ones he succeded with. Of all those candidates, I vote for the “innovator” over all the rest. No matter what the odds! One can dream right.
FREE THE JACKET!
You mean donate the jacket to the salvation army.
it belongs right along side Seinfeld’s puffy shirt in the Smithsonian. maybe include the dark shades
I was at Shea for Straw’s first homeun…still one of my all-time favorite Mets, even with all the BS.
That pic is classic. I wish I could find that old shirt
I still have faith that Pelfrey will be better now that Schneider’s back. Pelfrey pitched well his first couple of games with Schneider. I think Perez will get back on track too. What are Armas’ stats in the minors? Do they even warrant a look-see at him with the Mets?
that pic was done in that daily news poster style of the 70’s….remember those big head cartoon mets posters in the centerfold… kooz , the hammer buddy……
Armas has pitched well (the link has all the numbers).
How about trading Sosa to a team desperate for a SP, and calling up Armas to take his role?
personally i cant think of anything to get excited about a guy whose career #’s are probably 20 games under 500. in montreal he showed flashes of having potential, but how many years ago was that – 6 ?? i am willing to bet he has never won 14-15 games. a pitcher who is around 35 yrs old with past arm issues and very limited success just doesnt look like a likely solution. sosa probably has had more moments of success during the last 3 years. (i couldnt find armas’ stats on yahoo, i assume b/c he is not on the roster
Armas won a career high 12 games in 2002, and won 9 in 2006. Baseball-reference dot com is a beautiful thing.
dwight gooden isn’t in the mets hall of fame and his #16 isn’t retired. doc is the best and most important mets player since tom seaver.
his stats for the mets are excellent. he had a long tenure with the mets. the walk-up on the days he pitched ewas unmatched. he was a good man with a bad addiction.
it’s a shame the mets haven’t honored him and #16.
I love Doc, but I’d also add Keith as someone we need to retire the number of.
And someone who belongs in the HOF, as well.
keith is in the mets hall of fame unlike doc.
doc is much more deserving of a retired # than keith. keith only had 4 (maybe 5) good seasons with the mets. that’s not nearly enough. piazza deserves it over him if at all.
doc’s # should be retired. he’s the second best mets player ever
I meant Keith for the Cooperstown HOF.
Keep dreaming, the Wilpons aren’t going to honor a cokehead jailbird…sorry.
Maybe if he was just a cokehead, maybe….
keith was honored in the mets hall of fame. he had the same problem back then.
i don’t mean it as a slight on keith as he was a great leader and key to the mets ws win in 1986.
Let’s have some fun and play GM and the entire managing staff is gone: Bobby V (M), Mazz (BC), Gary C (PC), Mook W (1B), Hojo (3B), DStraw (HC). Any ideas for BPC and CC? I know I rehashed some coaches, but this may be the only way to make Met fans happy. Remember: THIS WAS JUST FOR SH*TS AND GIGGLES.
2 changes—I’d prefer Keith as the hitting coach. As for pitching coach, why not go to Seaver…clearly announcing wasn’t his thing.
Hey, how do you guys feel about batting Beltran third and Wright clean-up?
Reyes
Church
Beltran
Wright
Alou
Delgado
Schneider
Castillo
I don’t really see the advantage, It leads to Wright and Alou being consecutive righties.
Also, beltran did well in the cleanup spot last year, and wright did great batting 3rd.
For the sake of shaking things up, it could work. But I think we need another week or two with the current lineup before we can really conclude that shaking is necessary.
The Jacket? I don’t know what he fixes or how he fixes things so I don’t know how to judge his ability. I guess one way is to see how he is impactimng on the younger staff BUT…young pitchers are more typically not rock steady.
One thing I have a gut feeling about is that Perez has a fried brain this year (contract?) and that Pelf will be an awesome pitcher by mid season. Perez I don’t care much for but I hope they never get rid of Pelfrey.
Like a hitting coach, there is only so much a pitching coach can do. He can teach him proper mechanics, tweak his repertoire, and give him encouraging advice. However, it’s up to the player to execute his pitches. I don’t think Peterson could fix Perez’s mental state. When he came over from the Pirates, he was a mechanical wreck so it’s not like he needed a change in mindset like he does now.
Keith for Hall of Fame. A Great player. The numbers were fine but it was on the field where he was one of the best!
Bring back Bobby V!!!!!!!!!!!!!
