postGame: Dodgers 5 Mets 1
By Matthew Cerrone - May 6, 2008 1:59 am

The Mets (16–14) lost to the Dodgers (18–14) by the score of 5 to 1 in Los Angeles tonight.

For a recap and boxscore, go to SNY.

…much like the other day in Arizona, when it was obvious the Mets would win following a lead-off triple from Jose Reyes, tonight, i could feel a bad night in the works following a lead-off home run from Rafael Furcal off of Oliver Perez

…what’s worse, oliver had furcal down in the count, but, instead of slamming a breaking ball in to the dirt as Brian Schneider requested, he grooved a floater right down the center of the plate, which furcal hit over the wall using only power from his front leg…

…to add insult to injury, or, actually, injury to insult, perez was then hit in the stomach with a line drive…i know the feeling, o.p…i know it all too well…

…sadly, you could have changed the game at this point…

……Luis Castillo grounded out in each of his first two at bats, while stranding two runners in each of those at bats…oh, Slappy McSingleton, where are you…

…i have no idea why Sandy Alomar Sr. chose to hold Carlos Beltran at third, after having run from first on a ball hit deep in the left-field corner by Carlos Delgado…he would have scored…what’s worse, there was one out and the bottom of the order coming up…i don’t get it…later in the game, beltran was waved in by sandy and he stopped, settling for a triple instead of a possible in-the-park home run…of course, he eventually scored any way on a single by Moises Alou

…to his credit, perez settled in after his first inning, that is until he allowed a two-run home run to Matt Kemp in the fifth…he not only looks to be giving up on hitters, and using inconsistent mechanics, he looks depressed – as opposed to his usual stoicism…

Jose Reyes, Ryan Church, David Wright and Carlos Beltran were hitless in the first 15 plate appearances spanning the first five innings…

…on the plus side, Scott Schoeneweis and Jorge Sosa each pitched a scoreless inning…in a loss…figures

The Mets continue their three-game set with the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Fell asleep in the third inning. Glad I did.

I made it to the 4th, ugh with these late start times…

Sosa pitched for the 3rd day in a row… why?
Seems like that 8th would have been a decent time to get Heilman or Feliciano a less pressurized inning. But no, lets run Sosa into the ground again so he’ll give up more homers at Shea on account of being tired…

Man of all the things last night this upsets you? he’s going to be in the minors or on another team as soon as Wise comes back.. so maybe it’s use him while we got him theory…

seriously man, Willie will NEVER win with you..
he threw 15 pitches saturday, 10 sunday and 14 last night..
heres the problem, lets say he put out Sanchez, or anyone else, you’d complain that he used so and so in a losing effort….

It doesnt bother me, it just seems an off choice…

I have no problem with using any of the rested guys. Its just strange to go to Sosa so much. Not so much Dauner because he could use all the rest he can get, but getting Heilman into some unpressurized innings seem to work, maybe the same would be good for Feliciano.

I can understand the use him while you got him idea, but lets revisit that when the Mets send Joe Smith to AAA later in the week…

Unfortunately, this is what Ollie is…..wildly inconsistent. That is OK enough for a #4/5 starter, but on this staff right now, he is our number 2/3 and we need more out of him.

Pedro coming back and contributing would be absolutely huge, but as Cerrone has stated…we will need to see it first to believe it. If Pedro doesn’t come back and start contributing in June, I look for the team to make a move for a starter at the deadline (if one is available, of course), because the question marks of Figgy/Pelf at the end of the rotation - coupled with whatever Perez is doing will be enough to keep this team around first ahead or behind by 1-3 games- but certainly not enough to separate them from the pack. Is that difference maker available? Who knows….it would make everyone’s life easier if people on the team stepped it up and took advantage of opportunities (cough…Pelfrey…..cough).

In regards to the Alomar thing………I think it’s just the family blood line….destined to hurt this team forever and ever.

I turned the channel after Perez gave up that leadoff jack. I had some crazy feeling there was more to come.

If you haven’t seen it already. Willie has started to call out the fans at Shea. I encourage you to go read it on the Post’s website. Don’t even start to fight this battle Willie. Don’t even freaking start.

I just read that - but do you think a reporter asked a question that led willie into saying “yeah, it’s nice not getting boo’ed”…..theres your story……

Who knows? Obviously it is possible. His arrogance is so bothersome. I always feel like he is talking down to the fans. “I’m a winner,” bla bla… Real winner Willie, real winner.

Just read the story in the post. The only quotes from willie are him saying that the boos are carry overs from last year’s disappointment, and that when they start winning the fans will come around. I don’t see anything bad in what he said. Seems the reporter tries to make something out of nothing with his implications and headline.

The only thing I have to say is Vince Scully is the worst sports announcer I’ve ever heard. I would pay extra if I could get the Met’s broadcast down here in FL.

Really? I actually enjoyed him……not a homer (or didn’t seem like one to me). I think it would be a bit better if he had someone else in there with him just as a change of pace….or a different voice….but thats being picky on my part.

But if you read other team’s blogs………most of them can’t stand our announcing crew…….its all what your used to, I suppose.

Vin Scully is one of the best, if not the best announcers ever, and is acknowledged as such by his peers, fans, and players. I wish he did the playoffs and the world series like he used to. Would you rather have those morons on FOX that don’t know baseball and talk about Golf or their sons little league games like on Saturday? It’s absolutely horrible, like Steve Lyons that does the playoffs for them. It’s so obvious he doesn’t know baseball and the intracacies of the game because he NEVER gives insight of the game and talks about their uniforms or other superficial drivel.

While i love the SNY crew…This guy was not too bad. He had ALOT of insight into the mets players and really did not seem biased at all. Hes alright with me

The man is considered as one of the best ever and made one of the biggest calls in Mets history.

You cannot be serious! Scullyis the first opposition booth I was happy to have on my Extra Innings package. Especially compared to the Gants, Fish, and D-bags booths. The guy really paints the “word-picture” as he is simulcast on radio for the first three innings (quite a talent for one 80 year old to handle alone in the booth).

You know he bleeds Dodger blue, but he is not a “homer” and never actively cheers nor gets obviously down when the opposition does something good. When DWirght hit a homer in AZ, the nnouncers barely called the shot, just sort of sighed and lameneted the state of the world. When David made a great defensive play yesterday, Scully called it with enthusiasm like he was Gary friggin Cohen.

He is a pro who still does his homework at nearly 81 years old. Heck, I learned things about individual Mets players I never knew.

By the way, it was the right field corner, not left field.

btw, Marty Noble’s game recap the other day (Sun?) said that Conner Jackson’s errant throw went into RF (was really LF) so Matt is in good company…

I couldnt understand how the 1B threw into RF on a grounder, had to watch the replay later to see what really happened.

“…Jose Reyes, Ryan Church, David Wright and Carlos Beltran were hitless in the first 15 plate appearances spanning the first five innings…”

Didn’t Beltran lead off the second with a single? Matt must have been tired writing this recap… having 4 guys hitless in their first 15 plate appearances over 5 innings just doesn’t add up :)

For what it’s worth - Skully is the best in the business in my book. I’m not an old head either - I’m 28 and I could listen to him any day of the week… I love the grandpa story telling feel he brings to the game.

I don’t know if it is just me but why the hell did we sign Castillo during the off season. He is a good fielder but everytime he is up at bat he can’t hit the ball out of the infield. He
