Buzz: OP, Five Years, $60 Million
By Matthew Cerrone - May 7, 2008 10:01 am

Scott Boras was at Dodger Stadium yesterday, watching several of his clients, including Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez, who can be a free agent following this season..

According to John Delcos in the Journal News, citing ‘speculation,’ Perez could seek a five-year, $60 million contract this off-season.

…my initial reaction is to laugh in boras’s face…however, who knows…i mean, i can see perez going the way of Gil Meche, but also see him holding out and settling for a short-term deal like Kyle Lohse…i just have no idea any more how the pitching market will breakthat said, the Mets were not happy about giving Johan Santana more than five years…and perez wants five years too…wow…good luck, oliver…

For more on Perez, who Boras is comparing to Erik Bedard, also check out the Star-Ledger, Bergen Record and Newsday.

    60 mil for 5 years?

    ROFLMAO!!!!! LOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

I want whatever Boras is smoking!

    • theperfectgame says:

The really frustrating part is that he’ll get it. I just hope that it’s from someone else.

      • Ceetar says:

Why? who cares what these guys are paid? I don’t want the best available player per dollar, I want the best available player. Obviously Perez has to succeed this year to be considered one of the ‘best available players’ in the offseason, but assuming he performs similarly to last year, give him whatever he wants.

    • kingrw says:

that is exactly the amount boras will be shooting for. look at the approach he took with kyle lohse this off season, and jeff weaver the year before.

and IMO the deal lohse got with the cards is exactly the type of deal perez will get next spring. and unfortunately it probably won’t be with the mets, who will not be in a position to wait around for the shenanigans to end.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      talk about THINK BIG!

  2. theperfectgame says:

No thanks. I’ll take the draft picks. I do not need 5 years of elevated blood pressure, especially not for $60 million.

    • stewart0329 says:

i would package both OP and MPelfrey for a decent number 3 starter or some nice minor league pitching in a heart beat. Does anyone thiink Pelfrey is going to turn into Nolan Ryan and regret trading this guy like we regret trading Scot Kazmir?

      • mistermet5757 says:

It’s unfortunate that the Mets trade their 1st round pitcher who actually becomes a stud for nothing (Kazmir) and meanwhile are stuck with Big Pelf. Sometimes I just wish it was the opposite way (Pelf for Zambo)…I think i’d make that deal.

  3. giuseppe franco_procede says:

Not only should managment give OP the money with the years, but managment might as well sign Luis Castillo to a four year deal worth $25 million. Oh wait!

  4. Jim says:

If the mets agree to that deal do they get some of the 6.5million he isn’t earning this year back?

  5. Horseman says:

Well, a lot of fans wanted the mets to sign this guy. How quickly things change. I would trade him at the deadline for prospects.

  6. backinbusiness says:

Cothran: “Willie Randolph said he would look to rest a few of his regulars with the Mets playing a matinee today. “

  7. the_other_matt says:

All this losing and flat-playing must be taking it’s toll. Maybe I’ll take tomorrow off too. Sissies!

    • npanzeca says:

God forbid millionaires play every game.

    • Gasface77 says:

I know, seriously. I work full time, go to school at night, study when I get home from school, go to the gym and wake up the next day and do it all over again. These guys play baseball for 3 hours everyday. Give me a break. Willie should say: “guys, we suck…..sorry, no rest for you pansies today. Get out there and rip their hearts out.”

      • the_other_matt says:

that’s funny, me too…i work full time (4 straight weeks of 6 days a week, thank you very much), go to school full time, and have a family. Maybe if i went to the gym I could ask for a day off.

  8. metsfan119 says:

People can laugh all they want, but does anyone believe that there’s not some stupid GM out there who won’t give a 27 year old lefty with Perez’s stuff that kind of money?

    • sincekindergarten says:

A friend of mine says Texas. The Rangers will wind up with him, not having learned from the Millwood experience.

      • Jim says:

Well they say everything in Texas is bigger. for OP’s sake I hope they mean the strike zone.

  9. Jim says:

So far they taken at least 15 off, my question for Willie is when are they going to START playing?

  10. ChiliGTC says:

Ollie Perez sucks dog meat…..trade him now Omar. I cannot stand to watch that SOB pitch. And while we are on the subject, please fire that SOB Willie who cannot seem to shake up this anemic bunch…..it’s been 1 year of .500 baseball and there is no doubt in my mind, that’s the manager’s fault!

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Now your attitude is fired! Just what the Mets need! Kicking a** and taking names!

  11. ho-go says:

Oliver Perez is to Eric Bedard as Gumby is to Iron Man

  12. Don’t you have to like, I don’t know…throw strikes and get past 1.2 innings against a last place Pirate team to get 60 million dollars over a 5 year period??

I mean, I like Ollie.. but he’s just been so inconsistent, esp. the start of this year. Numbers like this and he’s probably going to end up like Kyle Lohse.

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

With Boras recent track record (a la A-Rod), I wouldn’t be surprised if many MLB teams balk at OP. I understand teams need lefties, but c’mon he is not worth 60 mil. Boras needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

      • Ceetar says:

track record? Oh..you mean getting A-Rod a raise, and making everyone think his reputation is tarnished, giving him more bargaining power?

    • backinbusiness says:

      Zito, what?

  13. archie says:

Oliver Perez can be almst good, not great.
He is similar to Zito in that he peaked young and gets a little worse every year.
Zito at least was awesome for a couple of years so teams can hope but with Perez it’s been so long and hes so erratic theres no way I see him getting anywhere close unless he really finishes strong.

  14. sincekindergarten says:

What about the Bronx? He might get 5 years and $75 mil up there . . .

    • npanzeca says:

Let him go there, those AL teams that work the count will chew him up and spit him out, oh wait, thats happening now.

  15. krumbledkookie says:

GM’s know what they’re getting with Perez - he and Boras won’t be fooling anyone. It’s going to depend on what his final numbers say this season, but at this point, he won’t get 12 mil a year, especially not for 5 years. He might get 3/30, but most likely, he’ll get 1 or two for 7-10 mil per.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

That would be a reasonable offer based on the his performance…But we are talking about boras…..

      • krumbledkookie says:

The Boras aura has dissipated, and was overrated in the first place. I don’t care if God is OP’s agent, he’s not getting 5 years and 60 mil.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

I would not be so sure. Yes he took a shot after the $330 million dollar fiasco that was AROD but frankly almost everything is in boras’s favor. He got the thin market on his side, the money other pitchers have made this year and the fact hes young/lefty. Boras has alot of bullets for GM’s. I think OP will get his money i just dont know which team would be stupid enough to pull the trigger. Just hope its not us.

        • krumbledkookie says:

I once hoped the Mets would give him a big payoff; now I’m not so sure.

  16. Dirtysanchez says:

Yes as stupid as this offer is…Im sure OP as many have said earlier will get it from some team that need rebuilding and an ace(laugh). I hope omar is not that stupid to give this guy that type of money. With duque/pedro and with this offer op gone next year, i think we will only need 1 good number 2/3 guy and we will be ok. I like the way figs has been throwing the ball and i think we can give him the 5th spot. Next year we should have santana, maine, pelf and figs…..we got the back order set up we just need someone who will help out at the front end. Anyone know who may be going to FA thats worth getting for that spot??

    • npanzeca says:

Well Omar did give Castllo 4 yrs/ 24 million so anything is possible. You know what I’m saying?

      • Dirtysanchez says:

Yea i see what you mean about that. He did bring in santana so anything is possible. I just hope this is one deal that he really thinks about it and makes the right move. This kid is EXTREMELY inconsistant and for 5 years i just dont know if he can be fixed. He has great stuff but some guys are just destined not to live up to potential….I would bring him back but not for that kind of money and boras knows the market is going to be very thin so hes going to rape w/e team for as much as he can get and use the market for a bargaining tool.

    • stewart0329 says:

We should trade Pelfrey how long are you going to wait for this guy to turn into a pitcher? Haven’t you seen enough? 3yrs and he still is as much or more inconsistant as OP.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

Trade him for who. Other teams see what we see and its not like we got anyone that can dependibly take over his spot in the rotation. What can we get in return for pelf that is better than what we got. Besides i doubt we will get prospects for him and even if we do we gotta wait till they develop. If they trade him away and get another pitcher im sure it will be an aging one and that is one of the problems on this squad. Pelf has potential because of his age and stuff. He is here and cheap. Perfect project for the jacket. Like i said earlier i would not mind brining OP back but just not for that price. Lefties usually take longer to develop than righties. I would stay with him and work on him just pounding the strike zone. He can do it we have seen it. Lets see also how he responds to Schnieder making the calls…

  17. backinbusiness says:

Maybe we can trade OP to the Yankees for Shelly Duncan when Pedro comes back.

    Just a thought.

    • Danny says:

Yeah, we’re going to need more back for Oliver Perez than a platoon first baseman.

      • backinbusiness says:

        I meant it as a starting point…

      • CitizenSnips says:

A platoon first baseman who is a monster offensive threat.

        • Danny says:

          .204/.278/.449/.727

Your monster has that career major league line against righties, and only 96 career major league at-bats. Oh, and he’s hitting .182 this year.

  18. bvaz says:

the funny part is that I have been thinking all year that Boras would start off at 5 years and $75M. If Perez can win 15 games again this year, he will probably get at least $60M.
The Mets may overpay for him. Think about what they are projecting for next year’s rotation. Santana, Maine and Pelfrey. As of now, there is no option in the minors for a replacement, maybe Niesse but that may be a stretch. Maybe Figueroa can be a #5 but let’s see how he pans out the rest of this year. They may be desperate.

    • krumbledkookie says:

Desperation comes in many forms. If they don’t win this year, they may tear down and bit and look to a short term rebuilding program, as in build around Wright, Reyes, Santana, and Church.

    • SlowRoller86 says:

Who do you replace him with? sure CC is out there, but if he gets there without resigning, he will be severely overpaid and want long term.

after him, MLB free agent SP will be in short supply next year and OP will probably get overpaid wherever he ends up.

the Mets will overpay with OP or his replacement, simple economics and the Mets will clearly be in demand

      • Dirtysanchez says:

Thats why im sure OP will get a simliar contract mentioned here. Everything is in Boras’s favor here. I think we just need a #2/3 starter for next year and we will be fine. I just dont know whos hitting FA this year. Anybody know whos worth mentioning in the upcoming market except cc

      • Peter says:

You replace him with Jon Garland and another project.

        Santana
        Maine
        Garland
        Pelfrey
        Project/Pedro/Niese/Figs/Armas Jr. etc.

  19. stickguy says:

Sad thing is, they should probably give it to him right now. He will still only be about 30 at the end of the deal, and left handed, so if nothing else, he will always be tradable.

Maybe 4 years with the 5th an option?

What the heck. They gave Duque 2 and Castillo 4, just give OP 5 and hope the next pitching coach gets him straightened out!

  22. njmatt says:

I’ve thought about this a lot. I would not be unhappy to see Perez go…I mean he can dominate or he can be horrible. It’s generally one or the other.

I’d rather have a Steve Trachsel in his prime type pitcher on this team, then OP.

I say if they can get a good package for him, send him packing, he’s 27, throws hard and is a lefty. Even Jim Duquette could get something valuable for him (even if his track record with this type of pitcher states otherwise). Or just take the draft picks we will get, I’m happy with that too. Remember guys, we have a lot of picks in the draft coming up this year, so that is something to be excited about…now if only we had the Dbacks’ or Braves’ scouts in our system.

  23. metsrbest says:

See here’s the thing…THE SEASON ISN’T OVER YET!!! If Ollie bounces back (which we had all better pray for,) and finishes with the same record and same ERA as last year, you don’t think he’ll get 60 mil over 5? Hell, he might get 70 mil over 5. So don’t pass judgement until he has the season under his belt.

  24. MetLifer says:

I’m starting to get sick of the new Mets fans. They boo one day when the team does bad and cheer the next when they do good. They complain about every player that is on a bad streak.

Wasn’t it just this spring when everyone was expecting OP to ask for $15 mill per and everyone here is like.. “we have to lock him up right away!” Now that he’s doing bad, they get on the “dump OP” bandwagan. In the spring $12 mill would have looked like a steal. Now it’s laughed at.

I agree with Matt. It’s still early.. stop B*TCH*N and support your team!!!!

    • EncinoMets says:

Couldn’t agree more. These fickle fans bum me out with their yapping.

  25. Seaver41 says:

The only way Mike Pelfrey will ever be dominant is if he joins a Lower Manhattan S&M club and gets outfitted with a leather wardrobe and a whip.

  26. ness589 says:

I’d offer 3yr/$21M. No more, no less.

  27. bisonman says:

Is Perez throwing across his body as much as that pic makes it seem, or is that just a 2-D illusion?

If he is, I wonder if that’s a consistent thing — or a clue as to why he’s so inconsistent.
